The fun topic of a birthday party will engage young children in this counting book that ranges from one to ten. Great interactive components ask readers to complete tasks such as tapping or tracing the images to assist with counting. Each spread represents one number, with the items that are being counted clearly labeled with the numerical representation, and the number word in the text is bolded. The mixed media digital illustrations resemble cut paper, which gives them a textured appearance in realistic colors and patterns. A small quibble is whether the Three Bears theme is too old for a child turning eight. The simple text would work well for children who are just learning to read, but this book could also be used at a counting storytime or as a read aloud for younger children just learning to count.
