Like many of us on this planet, Carmen Caine/Madison Adler is from another world. She spends every moment she can scribbling stories on sticky notes that her kids find posted all over the car, house, and barn.
When she is not working as a software engineer, she is busy ferrying her kids to various appointments, writing lyrics for her husband's songs, taking care of the dog Tigger and his heart condition, attempting to tame her three insane cats, scratching her three Nigerian Dwarf Goats behind the horns or coddling her flock of thirty bizarre chickens from around the world.
(3.5 Stars) The Cassidy Edwards series has been up and down for me. Why? The brevity of the storylines for one. This book felt more like a half book rather than a full storyline. Ms. Caine does not always infuse enough background knowledge into her reads at the beginning of the story. For example, it would have been nice if she had recapped some of the story from book four prior to starting the storyline for "Mindgames." I felt disconnected at first and just when the story begin to make sense, she had built the momentum of the story to the point where she was about to resolve the conflict. In my humble experience this book needed at least 120 pages more to truly be a strong read.
Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of action and intrigue, something that Ms. Caine is really good at. There is even a killer cliffhanger; however, there are so many proclamations of love from Cassidy about Lucien but very little to no contact between these two characters throughout the book. How can this be? It only leaves a gaping emotional disconnect for the reader with these characters. The same thing could be said for the other characters as well. There is just not enough interaction with any of these characters to make the reader feel what the author wishes to portray. What could have been a truly good read ended up be an okay read.
There is going to be one more book in this series and I have come to far to end it now; so, I will be going on to read "Mindsong." However, I hope that Ms. Caine takes some of my comments into consideration and provide us with an epic end to this story.
Whole book in a nutshell: I only want revenge. My revenge. No one else can help me get revenge. My plans are the best plans. That’s all I care about. Oh wait I love Lucian. Wait no I don’t I only love revenge. I don’t care who I hurt as long as I get my revenge. I don’t care what’s going on around me. I’m so close to my revenge! Wait, I caused all these problems? I hurt these people? People I care about died because of me? I don’t care about revenge any more. I just want to die. Let me call these creatures I’ve been running and hiding from since book one to kill me because I don’t care about anything. I just want to wallow in my misery literally everyone I know warned me my quest would cause and then kill myself. Oh wait, I changed my mind. I’ll join forces with two people I’ve hated the whole series and get revenge.
I'm surprised I find myself anything besides a stellar review for this book. The pace for me was weird, this is the first book I've read in a while that I couldn't read for more than a half hour at a time. I think it was just too repetitive throughout and while there was action it wasn't particularly compelling. It's probably my own preference, the book was still well written. Just not as in love this time.
Okay, I have be waiting and checking for this book for a year now since book 4 ended with a great Cliffhanger. Except this book didn't continue where book 4 ended. The first chapter mc dialogue was confusing. I felt like the mc changed personality. I was confused as to what happened. The constant used of the repetitive word "crud" became annoying. I am very disappointed how the author basically lost the flow of the series. Why even write this book when it's written in a calculated emotionless depiction of the mc?
Another reviewer said that the author gave up on this series and that the continuation of book 4 cliffhanger ending is on a separate standalone Dorian book. Really? Not crazy about how this was not mentioned by the author's book comments.
I can't even continue after chapter one since I couldn't relate to the mc anymore. There was a lot of telling and not enough showing on this book. DNF.. Totally disappointed on this book.
Book 5 felt forced to me. Cassidy and Lucian were completely changed, and while there's backstory to argue for change, it was too dramatic for me to find believable. Casey's deliberate obtuseness was irritating. She may be on a revenge kick, but surely she can still the basic concepts together to form a larger picture. That whole scene on the roof with Ricky and Gloria was painful to read.
I also feel like the plot is inching along, making book 5 feel very filler. I was looking forward to this book, thought it was the conclusion of the series, and come to find out very little happens to move things forward so it's the penultimate book. Honestly, I think this could have been condensed into a few chapters at the start of the next book and have been just as effective and more believable.
I thought this was the last of the series but apparently there are more. A lot of things come to head in this book. I was surprised and saddened even shocked a few times. We see all of the same characters but are introduced to a few new ones. Again Cassidy is all about making mistakes but this time will it turn out on her favor? She isn’t my favorite character. She is too single minded not open to advise. I know trust is a big issue with her and she has been turned on a lot through the series. But sometimes saying sorry after just isn’t the same.
I listened to this on audio. Lynn Devereux is wonderful in this series. She impressed me listening to her during this series. I want to mention the voices she did. Last review so talked about the languages. The way she does Tabitha whose voice is robotic reptilian, or Ricky who is a whisp of smoke imp, even Heath who is a wolf shifter with surfer looks. She nails them all!
Cassidy is still playing the long game of revenge against Emilio. She is taking risks and slowly eliminating vampires from his clan in a plan to throw suspicion onto the Templars and get to Emilio. Unfortunately, this isn't going to work well for her. Gloria returns with a more significant role in this story and it seems her opinion of Cassidy is shifting. However, Cassidy finds a way to control Gloria, which doesn't help her see that there is something else going on.
As the plot progresses, Cassidy finds out that Tabitha is in danger (due to her actions). She starts to question her need for revenge and finally mourns for her mother and all the other things she has lost/done. There is a final confrontation with Emilio that brings about the loss of one of the secondary characters. The ending isn't really a cliffhanger, but dang! Those last few sentences really throw Cassidy for a loop and I think are going to add to her reckless final solution to eliminating Emilio.
I had a lot of hope for this book but i was sorely let down. it was poorly written and the author honestly made Cassidy look like one of the dumbest book characters ive ever had the encounter of reading about. im to the point to where if anyone were to tell me "not interested" or "im busy" i would probably would cry out of anger and irritation. this book made me so mad that im having a hard time deciding if i want to reread this series for the release of the next book or just to set it down now. the entire book was literally her being a dumbass. thats it.
Not as good as the other books. I was so confused by the first chapter, I had to go back and read the last 3 chapters of the previous book again. It was an odd combination of feeling rushed/too short and nothing actually happening.
The I-feel-dead-inside-so-I’ll-be-rude-to-friends routine got old pretty quickly. Also the fake mindless minion act wasn’t particularly believable.
While I understand that the Italian words and phrases were thrown in to build up the character, it would be more effective if they were correct.
I really enjoy the Cassidy Edwards series. If you like twists and turns, fairly good fight scenes, paranormal activity, this series is a right fit for you. It certainly was for me. I read book 5 in just 5 hours, funny how that sounds huh? I ignored familial responsibility, left dishes in the sink, clothes in the dryer, bed unmade. Pretty awesome book for me to do that. I hope you enjoy this series as much as I have.
I read this book in a couple days. I love Cassidy, she is so complex and a loner. She just doesn’t realize she has entire woven family that accepts and loves her. Sad to see her story coming to an end. I’ll have to reread all the books before finishing the series. Also, love all the back story in the mini books.
She was solely fixed on revenge. Emilio would pay, and she would engineer all possible situations, that would destroy him. However, it's not something you can do on your own, they all said it, but her heart was cold, and she had to do something to avenge her, her mother and all the souls he had destroyed. Until the child, she changed everything!
It took forever to get this installment but so worth it. That ending was just...wow! Cassidy definitely isn't having a good time. Let's see how long before the final installment to this series.
I’ve really enjoyed this series but I’m wondering if I missed a book or something. This book while enjoyable left me confused. I’m also kinda over the whole trust/distrust issues with the main characters.
I love the series. This book had everything mystery action romance suspense Magic . It's not like all the other Supernatural books it's very original . I can't wait to get to the next one.
I still enjoy the series but goodness it's time for some growth from Cassidy! She still stomps around like a clueless child! It would be awesome to see her again knowledge before going along with half baked revenge plots!
Cassidy continues with cold-hearted determination to take revenge against her father. Adventure and bad decisions seem her destiny as she ignores her heart looking to kill her father.
I put off reading this book for a minute because the Cassidy we knew changed. It was like the author forgot her own character and went back to the beginning. Hope the finale is better than this one....
I can’t tell you how much I have enjoyed this series. It’s absolutely captivating. The characters are wonderful. I’m so heartbroken at the moment and I don’t want it to end. Lynn really has brought these characters alive.
