“The World’s First Supervillain Returns!” screams the cover of this graphic novel. And, while one could argue about earlier possibilities, certainly Fantômas was the earliest to achieve such mass popularity, and the first to bring together so many of the characteristics that a modern audience would consider essential to a good supervillain.

I’ll confess that I know little of the original character, mostly just the name and reputation. If one does enough delving into comics and pulp history, the name is bound to surface sooner or later. And he was one of the villains in Gahan Wilson's send-up/homage to classic detective and pulp fiction, Everybody's Favorite Duck.

Fantômas keeps his identity a closely guarded secret, and is more than willing to kill to protect it. He is a master of disguise and planning, almost succeeding in his audacious plan to steal all of the gold in France. Of course he has a nemesis on the side of law enforcement, Inspector Juve. Because every great villain needs a nemesis. Fu Manchu has his Dennis Nayland Smith, Moriarty his Holmes, the Joker, Batman, and so on.

Given my unfamiliarity with the original novels, I can only guess at how well Bocquet and Rocheleau have done at evoking their spirit. Certainly this graphic novel is a fine pulpy adventure, full of twists and turns and satisfyingly epic set pieces. The artwork reminds me of Kyle Baker in places.

I'm definitely up for more of these, and may even investigate whether any of the original novels exist in English translation. Highly recommended!

Na první dobrou zaujme neokoukaná a odvrácené tváři belle époque vzdávající hold nádherná "kontrastně surrealistická" kresba, kterou echt velký formát publikace dává ještě o to více na odiv. Výhodou je i vydání třech alb v jednom svazku, krom ucelenosti celého dobrodružství především proto, že první album je natolik rozjezdové, že kvalitu získává až jako součást celku a nikoli samo o sobě.

Jinak jde o výtečné přiblížení Fantomase a šestákových krváků (a že tohle řádně krvavé a nekompromisní tedy je) pro dnešního čtenáře. Tam kde předlohy jsou, na rozdíl od Sherlocka, dnes již do značné míry (bohužel) nečitelné, tam je toto věrné každým coulem duchu originálu a přesto moderní (nikoli zasazením, ale stylem vyprávění, tempem apod.). Nesporně by šlo vyčíst, že Fantomas je typem "deus ex machina" záporáka, který vše ví a všude je. Jenže... To je tak nějak základní rys jeho makabrózní podstaty.

Ve Francii již několik let připravují nové filmové zpracování Fantomase dle původních knih. Nyní jim stačí zadaptovat toto a mají bohatě vystaráno, protože lépe až to snad ani nešlo.

Fantomase s Jeanem Maraisem a Luisem de Funésem jsem nikdy nemusela, vlastně ani nevím proč, ale ta humorná poloha mi k téhle látce nikdy neseděla - tudíž jsem si tuhle knížku opravdu užila. Tady je Fantomas temný, mysteriozní, skutečně zlý - což také asi věrně odpovídá té původní literární předloze.

Výtvarně je to hodně neotřelé, ale o to zajímavější - až do konce Vás autoři nepřestanou překvapovat, co vše dokáží do obrazů dostat. Už dlouho mi vizuálně nic tak nesedlo jako tahle kniha, už jsem také zjišťovala, zda se dá ještě koupit a myslím, že nám vlastní kopie brzo přistane v domácí knihovně, protože tohle je věc, ke které se chci někdy vrátit. Bez váhání plný počet hvězdiček.

Kontext: Náhodný výběr v knihovně - stála jsem před policí s komiksy a tohle mi padlo do oka.

The Wrath Of Fantomas is the best comic I’ve read in years. The art is stunning, the use of complimentary exemplary.
This is a stunningly told, visually arresting work of art with subtle references to Guernica, the wrath of Medusa and The Death Of Marat and not so au e nods to the theft of the Mona Lisa…as well as a reference to a Dickens plot point whose story I remember but whose title
I forget.

Dark, gory, funny…/
Romantic, action packed and meticulously crafted.
Hunt this down and enjoy.

Prekrásna kresba, dobrá storka.
Toto nie je veselý Fantomas od Jeana a Louisa, toto je nahnevaný zločinec, ktorý prahne po pomste a zabíja bez váhania. Juve a Fandor sú schopní protivníci, ktorí sú vždy o chlp bližšie k chyteniu Fantomasa. Výborná zábava, v zmysle nie hahahahahaha. #trebacitat

I was not familiar with Fantômas as a character before reading this, so I probably missed some of the references contained in this story, but I enjoyed this. Julie Rocheleau's artwork is gorgeous, and easily the best part of the whole experience.

070419: much prefer the (word) book. captures highlights, not much sense of devious plot, emotional resonance... bc the surrealists liked the books/films i wanted more surrealist art...

¡Que lindo es cuando te encontrás con tremendo libro por completo de sorpresa! En este caso, no conocía a los autores y del objeto de su historia -el criminal Fantomas- sabía lo mínimo. Lo conocía, sí, pero sabía de él apenas que era un ladrón y el motivo de una saga de novelas francesas de las que no tenía mayor dato. Sabía, también, que luego fue objeto de una lejana adaptación a historietas mexicanas -dónde lo vuelven un héroe- pero, cómo tienen poco que ver con lo que hoy nos ocupa, no profundizaremos. Aquí, el guionista francés Bocquet y la dibujante canadiense Rocheleau, afrontan la traslación al noveno arte del personaje original, el despiadado ladrón y asesino, el genio criminal creado por Pierre Souvestre y Marcel Allain a principios del siglo XX en 31 novelas. Y aunque no adaptan ninguna novela en particular, si replican el molde -ese que se asemeja mucho a la saga de novelas de Fu Man-Chu realizadas por Sax Rohmer, más o menos en la misma época de Fantomas- donde tenemos a dos narradores protagonistas -el inspector Juve y el periodista Fandor- quienes tratan -y tratan y tratan y tratan- de detener a "La amenaza elegante" a la hora de cometer sus crimenes, pero Fantomas siempre es más listo, más despiadado o más cruel. Como desconozco las novelas originales, ignoro cuanto de ellas hay en el grand guignol que propone Bocquet, pero eso no es pero para poder decir que el guión es una maravilla. Sorprende a cada paso, maravilla en cada resolución, causa risa cuando se lo propone y estremece cuando ídem. Es un prodigio de timing, de desarrollo de personajes y un gran homenaje a la aventura folletinesca de la que Fantomas es mascarón de proa. Pero si lo anterior no alcanzara, el dibujo de Rocheleau es de esos que te quema las retinas y se te graba en el cerebro. Una suerte de Bill Sienkiewicz al límite -o sea, como el mejor Sienkiewicz, lo que es decir- con un punto de Kyle Baker y mucho propio, donde la canadiense deslumbra en cada viñeta, cada personaje, cada fondo y la rompe también en material de narrativa, brindando unas páginas de acción espectaculares. Todo un hallazgo este La Cólera de Fantomas que es un imperdible para todo buen lector de historieta (sobre todo si, como un servidor, aman la literatura de aventuras decimonónica). Nota: en nuestros pagos la edición que se consigue de esta magnífica obra son los tres tomos editados por Dib-buks que circulan hace muy poco.

Fantomas, the classic villain of B move type, now has his own graphic novel. I did not plan to purchase this one, but I found it on a bargain shelf in the Forbidden Planet and could not resist. It turned out to be a wide decision. Although the story is predictable and contains a fair amount of gore, the artwork is exceptionally good. I loved the palette, the images full of action, and a noir version of Paris in 1910s. 3/5 for the story but 5/5 for the drawings.

A marvelous read. Set Paris in 1911 with drawings that reminiscence of old fashion illustrations. The villain is really villainous and there is no happy ending. I dare say that this book will give you something different than what you are reading right now. For me it was a very welcome and refreshing change.

A gruesome and humorous thriller.
The pencils and coloring are fresh and masterful.
At times I was reminded of a children's book and then something horribly violent would happen.
