I first saw Aladdin when I was just three or four years old. Years later, when hearing about the remake, I was excited because it took me back to the time I remember watching the animated film. Seeing how they elevated the landscape and the clothing and motivations and aspirations of the key characters was very interesting to see. What I look forward to the most is how this remake is different to the animated film. I will see the movie Tuesday and I am very much looking forward to it!
Wow this lavish book is full of informations, photographies and concept arts. Highly recommend the movie. If you have enjoyed it, you should buy the book !
Being a huge Disney's Aladdin fan, there was no question about my buying this book. I have absolutely loved the film adaptation, and couldn't wait to dig into its secrets.
It is beautifully made, with high-quality photos, and divided into 9 chapters reflecting the different components of the film (i.e. Creating a Global Cast, Costumes, Visual Effects, Songs and Music...).
However, while I have enjoyed this book, I found it to be more of a mix between a 'film companion' and 'photo guide' rather than a proper 'making of' book. I felt it lacked the whole process of bringing the film to life as is usually the concept of these types of books. There are for examples no story boards, no details on the development of costumes or props, barely any photos of the set or of the crew and team behind the cameras. We all know what the final version looks like; what I was looking for was joining the team on their journey to that final destination.
I also wasn't a massive fan of Emily Zemler's writing. Having read the whole book in 2 days, several points were being repeated throughout sections (I would have rather the space be used for some novel facts), or were pretty obvious especially to fans of the original animated feature.
Having said that, the quality of the book is beautiful, the photos especially over 2 pages are aesthetically pleasing to the eye, and you do have some really stunning concept art included throughout it. Plus, I still have learned quite a few facts about the ideas and concept behind the development of the film, just not as much as I would have expected to.
Overall, while I felt this 'art and making of' book fell short of my expectations, it remains a beautiful addition to any Aladdin collection.
