I’ll be the first to admit that this book is targeted towards kids and I am an adult. That said, I really was hoping it would be comparable to the original (Kanto) handbook I still have and referred to so often while playing Gen 2&3.
Three stars because it’s not bad per se but I was disappointed. My first complaint is that it is alphabetical, so Pokémon are not grouped together by evolution. This is not a total dealbreaker, but I was expecting otherwise, based on the old format. My major complaint though is that no information is given on when or how Pokémon evolve. I don’t want to a have a Pokédex tab constantly open on my phone or laptop while playing, I want to flip through and find the info instantly.
The info that it does include is fine. I really liked that there are fact boxes with information specific to Sword or Shield! The illustrations are as cute as ever.
Maybe my expectations were biased by nostalgia but as someone coming back to Pokémon as an adult, this book was quite underwhelming.
