Me: “What did you like about the book?” Fae: “I like about the book because I saw a mermaid in the book and I love mermaids the most ever! I liked the pesky dragon, the little baby one, was soooo cute and funny!” Me: “How many stars would you give the book out of 5, 5 being the best?” Fae: “5 stars!”
I'm in my 30s and I get giddy each time one of these is published. I absolutely adore the Owl Diaries and Unicorn Diaries... such bright colors and adorable characters - amidst a darling story every time!
Wish the whole series was out. It keeps Lexi engaged, the characters' names and powers are fun, and there are enough of her sight words scattered throughout that I can stop and have her try to read a sentence or two.
I loved the first one and I love this one too. The only thing that is in every book including this one is that in the title gives away the main idea in the story,so when I saw "Bo and the dragon pup" I new what the story was mainly about. But other than that I love the book.
The unicorns continue to earn their badges and learn as a class. This time they have to find missing items that have disappeared from their rooms at school. They encounter dragons and help a young dragon find friends and get closer to his family.
It was the third book in this series that caught my eye at the library - a colorful unicorn on the cover wearing armor and carrying a shield, and hovering above him a similarly clad pixie riding a dragonfly. Naturally, I had to get the first two books to look at. These are reading level 2, for First and Second Graders. The author has a very similar series Owl Diaries which is also great. This series is just a little more magical with fairies and pixies and trolls. My favorite so far are the pixies! The artwork is colorful and engaging. Each unicorn has their own unique magical power. Bo can grant one wish every week. The stories are all about using their skills and teamwork to overcome obstacles, make friends, and help others.

Bo and the other students at Sparklegrove School for Unicorns are working on earning their detective patches. A collection of items has disappeared from their school overnight. The unicorns have their suspicions as to what took the items, but can they prove it with their detecting skills?
A cute little mystery for kids just getting into chapter books. The graphic novel format, bright color scheme, and the unicorn/dragon/mystery combo is a pretty sure win with just about any little reader. There's a nice little lesson about jumping to conclusions in here, and I like how the unicorns admit their mistaken conclusions and then work to rectify any harm they might have done because of those. The little dragon in the story is also dealing with being the youngest kid in a family and siblings who are all much older. I can't remember the last time I saw this in a kids' book, but it is something I know several students in our school can relate to so I'm glad Elliott worked it into this story. Hand this to fantasy fans, graphic novel fans, dragon and unicorn lovers, and light mystery fans.
This is the second book in the Unicorn Diaries series and continues the adventures of Bo and her classmates as they work on earning patches for their patch blanket each week. This week, the unicorns don their detective gear to investigate the mysterious disappearance of several items of importance. Along the way, they find clues that point to a little dragon pup as the culprit. My almost 5-year-old loved the cheeky antics of the dragon pup, although his actions were a bit naughty (don't worry - it all gets resolved in the end!) Another cute diary story with vivid pictures and lessons about teamwork and communication.
his series is just not a hit, the overwhelming amount of PINK, the not quite a novel, not quite a comic, not quite a graphic novel, not quite a notebook- identity crisis all around. My toddler liked the pictures but thats about it. No one liked the story, which is more of 'texting' or 'notes'. This says 'grade 2' but it did not hold my 7 yr olds attention at all
1 stars is for my toddler who liked the pictures and unicorns in general
My child is dyslexic and this has been a good book to take turns practicing reading. My child finds it engaging and is interested in the story and the words are at just the right level of difficulty. Because of the way the book is set up it is easy to break it down into chunks to have my turn reading and then have their turn reading so they do not get frustrated. I look forward to reading more in this series with my child!
This is an adorable follow-up to the first book and I loved it. We meet dragons here with the unicorns overcoming fears and their anxieties over meeting new magical creatures that they think are scary. The mystery/detective aspect was cute too.
For: unicorn fans; readers wanting a diary format and fun illustrations.
Possible red flags: misunderstandings, misbehaving, and thievery.
Unicorn Bo and his friends are ready to earn Detective patches from their teacher by discovering who stole items out of their classroom. The clues lead them to believe a young dragon is the culprit. The identity of the real thief is a surprise that soon leads them to a new friend. Another sweet and colorful entry in the Unicorn Diaries series. My rating is as an adult; kids would probably rate it higher.
Miss 7 enjoyed her first Unicorn diaries book and is keen to read more.
Miss 7 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
This series is okay. I don't like that they don't live with their parents. Friends are great, but in a culture that is trying to take parents out of the equation in some cases, I think you have to be careful what you put in a book. Anyway, Bo and classmates are getting their detective badges as they try to discover who is swiping their stuff.
This was another cute book in the series. I like the formula it follows as well as the pace. It was a cute story. I also really like the illustrations. I think this is a great book for early independent readers and so would be quite likely to recommend it.
Some of the unicorns’ belongings are missing! Bo and his friends set out to solve the mystery and earn their Detective patches. Along the way, they meet a mischievous dragon pup, who is soon to be a friend!
My four-year old loves listening to these as I read to him!
My daughter loved this one and I enjoyed reading it with her. The illustrations are fun, colorful, and inviting for young readers. The characters and story are delightful and engaging. Overall, a great read for young readers.
