Sometimes to take a step in the right direction you have to run away.
Sarah Collier’s life has always been scripted for her, according to the expectations of her domineering, socially-connected Connecticut family. Everything always went as planned…until the unthinkable happened moments before walking down the aisle. On a whim, she does the first thing that comes to mind—she takes off on her honeymoon, alone. However, Sarah has never acted on spontaneity, so the impromptu trip may not be what Sarah thinks it will.
The quaint and rustic harbor village of North Berwick on Scotland’s East Lothian coast is typically devoid of tourists in the winter. So when an auburn-haired stranger who wanders into his pub on a cold, Sunday evening, Bretton Keith, self-assured and flirtatious pub owner that he is, sees the opportunity for another brief and fun fling to break up the monotony of a village winter.
As Bretton comes to know the sad and beautiful Sarah, he finds it increasingly difficult to uphold his credo of never becoming attached. Can he forget the mistakes of the past and learn to trust another with his heart? All the while, Sarah is experiencing a new-found freedom to dare think of her life in a different way, to truly consider what it is that she wants and what it is that will make her happy. Will Sarah be brave enough to risk it on a man who was so hurt by another that he swore off ever falling in love again, or will the demands of her family prove too big an obstacle to overcome?
Adrienne Dunning is simply a Southern gal who has fun playing poorly at golf when she’s not crafting novels. She loves all forms of expression—writing, dancing, cooking, talking—and does them frequently and with abandon. She lives in coastal North Carolina and uses that region as the setting for many of her stories.
Seeking Solace was a quick and easy read for me. It follows the story of Sarah and Bretton. Sarah has always done what was expected her. Even going as far to marry someone she didn’t really love. However, fate intervenes at the last minute. Moments before she is supposed to walk down the alise, she finds out her fiancee isn’t coming. On a whim, she takes off to Scotland where she was supposed to be going on her honeymoon.
Bretton, is a self-assured and flirtatious pub owner. He’s tired of the monotony. He’s tired of never becoming attached. Meeting Sarah will make change his perspective and make him long for things he’s sworn he doesn’t want. Can Sarah make him forget the past and let him open up his heart again? Will Sarah be able to become her own person and do what she wants for a change? Will she risk everything for the man that she’s fallen in love with?
Overall I found this book to be an ok read. I loved the town and the scenery where the story took place. I liked the idea of the story. I liked how Sarah took a big risk and upon taking that risk, she found her self and became truly happy. I thought that Sarah and Bretton were a good match for each other. Sarah made Bretton open his eyes to the possibility of love and showed him that not all people will leave and break his heart.
I did have some issues with the pacing of the story. I would have liked to have seen Sarah and Bretton’s relationship develop a little more. I felt like certain things in the story happened a little too quickly.
Other than the pacing issue, I thought this book was a really sweet read. It had some angst, drama, and of course romance. Seeking Solace is Adrienne Dunning’s debut novel. I think this author has a lot of potential and I’m looking forward to checking out more from her in the future.
*I was provided an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
A perfectly good runaway bride book filled with local Scottish character. Though the storyline was serendipitous and fairly predictable, the secondary characters and banter made the ride enjoyable. I recommend this for an easy escape read.
This was a great romance. I couldn't put it down. Adrienne did a great job describing scenery and characters that I felt like I had traveled to Scotland! This is a must read!
I was pulled into Sarah's emotional turmoil right from the start of Seeking Solace. Dunning used her words to weave a beautiful and engaging story, causing me to be swept away into the peace of the Scottish countryside. Sarah's father's phone call shattered that peace with expectations and a plan for her future that had me furious. The conversation with Bret that followed really gave me a great glimpse into his painful past. I felt for both of them and wanted so badly for them to hold tightly to what was blossoming between them. As the clock was ticking down on Sarah's time in Scotland, I was on the edge of my seat. I knew what I wanted her to do and I wanted to see things work out for her with minimal family interruption. I was excited by the opportunities presenting themselves and wanted Sarah to grab onto happiness with two hands and never let go. When she received a surprise visitor at the Manor, I was shocked and even more so by the events that followed. I also felt pride at the fearless way with which she handled the obstacles in her way. The ending was lovely and even more than I had hoped. I am definitely looking forward to reading more from Adrienne Dunning.
This is my first time reading this author and I am impressed. Sarah is the daughter of a controlling family. She is about to married and is given some news that makes her leave. She decides to go alone on her honeymoon to Scotland where she meets pub owner Breton. When she walks into his pub Sarah does something to his closes off heart and Sarah never expected someone like Bretton to kickstart her. I absolutely liked Sarah she was smart, courageous and flawed. She proved to be strong in taking her life and setting her course which is never easy. I also enjoyed the changes in Bretton and how he became invested in love again. Amazing setting , characters and story. I received a copy of this book for my honest opinion.
Sarah and Bret’s story was sweet and enjoyable. Sarah is left at the altar of a less-than-love-match wedding, so she decides to take her honeymoon that her ex paid for by herself. While in Scotland, she meets Bret, an intriguing man who she can’t seem to stay away from. Bret has a bit of an aversion to relationships, thanks to an ex of his own, but he and Sarah find themselves spending more time together and falling for each other. They both think that this is only a vacation fling, but when Sarah makes the choice to uproot her boring, bland life to actually live and love, they find their HEA in a sweet manner.
This was a great fun read. Sarah was left standing at the altar and decided to go on her honeymoon in Scotland alone just to get away from the drama that is her family. She meets Bret the local tavern owner and there is an Instant connection. Sarah and Bret had both been hurt and agree to just enjoy the time together. This one is has a not so in love jilted bride, a cheating no show groom, two sets of rich interfering controlling parents, a wonderful Lady of the Manor who befriends Sarah, a handsome tavern owner who sings in his own band, his band mates and Donald and Alan who are 2 tavern regulars who are a hoot. I really enjoyed this one.
I enjoyed this Seeking Solace. A story about a young woman named Sarah, who has always done what her parents and society expected of her. That is until she is stood up at the alter. After fleeing an embarassing scene at the church, she decides to leave and go on her honeymoon to Scotland alone. There she meets Bretton a local pub owner and a musician. During her stay she discovers what she really wants out of life. I feel it could have had a little more depth to the story but I did enjoy it nonetheless. It is an enjoyable, quick read.
The scene of the book is Scotland. I think it was a perfect setting for Sarah, not only to find herself, but to find real love. It came together almost too perfectly for her, from the locals to the school where she did her research. I found her family a little annoying, so it was fitting that she found people that she could spread her wings with. I also appreciated that Bretton was one of her biggest fans when it came to Sarah's new experiences.
Wow!! SEEKING SOLACE by Adrienne Dunning had me at the Very Beginning of the Book and never a Dull moment page after page. She is also a New Author for me and look forward to read more of her Writing. It was such a Sweet Swoon-worthy Romantic page turner and devour it in ONE Sitting. I felt like I was right there with Sarah in Scotland and the banter between two characters keeps you on your toes! DEFINITELY A MUST READ BOOK!!
I think some of us can relate to Sarah's need to do things to please everyone. She goes above and beyond to do what is expected of her until she meets bretton. Their worlds are turned upside down as they navigate this new relationship and the consequences it brings. This is my first book by Ms Dunning and I enjoyed her writing. I look forward to more.
Sarah has been forced into an engagement but she was willing to make the sacrifice until the groom runs. Embarrassment has her fleeing to a new life of her own. Brett is just the man to make her know love for the first time and find herself again. Good read!
Man! What a way for the book to start. Poor Sarah. She doesn’t seem too distraught but wants to get some time to think about life. Her “honeymoon” trip alone brings a lot to her life in this sweet, easy read! Loved the army at the bar! I felt like I was there!
Loved this story of finding love when you least expect it. Not a billionaire in sight, but lovable and down to earth characters. This was a fantastic read!! Highly recommend.
Great story about finding out who you really are and learning to stand up for yourself. Love the strength in the female character. SO refreshing that she was not backing down.
Good story! I liked the setting and the characters in this story. Sarah and Bretton were great together and I liked their connection to each other. This was an enjoyable, quick read.
Life is what you make it and sometimes the toughest step to take is the first because once those wheels are in motion there is no turning back. This was the case with Sarah Collier because she knows all too well what it was like to lead a life that has always been perfectly scripted and in some respects my heart broke for her but I was internally whooping when her penny dropped on the one day that everyone was supposed to be singing from the same hymn page – literally! Because far from following the script, Sarah took her life under her control and walked away! Leaving everything she as ever know behind she sets off on what was meant to be her honeymoon – into the unknown she is finally doing what she wants and I was delighted that she had finally out herself first. The author did an amazing job in her portrayal of Sarah, I liked her and was almost immediately invested in the journey she was taking. I wanted her to have everything that she needed and deserved and to finally spread her wings and fly – I just didn’t expect that Berwick in southern Scotland would be the place that she would finally find what she needed, then again I doubt she did either. Bretton is the local pub landlord and the appearance of this pretty stranger in the town certainly draws his attention but is his interest only titillation and amusement or is there something else with him. I found Bretton a curious character, he has a past that seemed to have a hold on him that was stopping him from taking the steps forward that I was begging him to take – honestly I was internally pleading with him to cut not only himself but Sarah some slack and live for the moment, but then again when you have liked the life that Sarah had – could she finally accept that what happened next for her was her call to make – would she finally tell her family where to get off their high horse and be the woman that she wanted and the woman that Bretton needed, could she make him see that just because he had been hurt before, he could trust her to never hurt him. I was entranced by the characters and their story, by what they had both been through, by the pain that they both carried with them and by the fact that they were doing what they could to start afresh but I adored the pure romance of their situation – may no bones about it – this is an out and out romance and you will be well placed to make yourself comfortable and allow the author to transport you into the wilds of a the Scottish countryside. This was a beautifully written, superbly evocative and heart-warmingly romantic read – thoroughly recommended.
They say don't judge a book by its cover. Unfortunately I tend to do this; it's a weakness of mine. Suffice it to say that when I received an ARC of this book I wasn't too gung-ho about reading it. Luckily for me, I pressed on and was pleasantly surprised.
This book follows Sarah who got stood up at the altar and so does the only thing she can think of - she escapes to her honeymoon on her own. While here, she discovers herself and figures out what it is she wants from life.
I enjoyed getting to know Sarah and Brett. They are not terribly complicated. They're just regular people who've had bad experiences and are trying to make the most of it. For the most part, one could say that they were just going through the motions until their chance meeting jump-started their lives. I loved that their romance was sweet and developed naturally. There wasn't too much angst between them, which was a relief. They did have their moments of miscommunications and the way it was resolved was pretty sweet and unique.
Of course, as with any romance novel, there were a host of secondary characters who provided just the right amount of conflict as well as comic relief. I truly LOVED The Ship's Inn Tavern. If I were into bars/pubs, this is the kind of place I would frequent as it has a friendly, homey atmosphere and the patrons feel like family.
Although I enjoyed reading about the romance between Sarah and Brett, as well as getting lost in the wonder and beauty that is Scotland, for some reason, I had a hard time getting into the book. It took me several tries until I finally found my groove and got lost in the story.
All in all, for fans of a romance that's on the sweet side without explicit sex scenes, this is a sure bet.
Seeking Solace is more than a love story, its about finding yourself, finding your place in the world, and making your own decisions. It is also about finding love where you least expect it.
Upon leaving the states for Scotland, Sarah, isn't expecting anything special. She wants time to herself, time to move on and figure out what she wants to do next in her life. She needs to figure out who she is now, and how she wants to proceed in her life.
Bretton, a local pub owner/band member, finds himself drawn to Sarah and has a serious need to know all about her and why she's in Scotland. Bret has his own past, things that hurt him, things he regrets, but he's more 'go with the flow' so he doesn't really allow the past to affect current decisions, something his friends worry for him over.
As Sarah and Bret get to know each other, it is clear that they may just have found their perfect match, but can it work out? Is Sarah able to make the choice to stay in Scotland over returning home to give a relationship a fair chance?
I enjoyed that this story focused on Sarah finding herself as a whole and not just the love story brewing between her and Bret. It was beautiful to see Sarah standing up for herself and taking a stand for her future needs/desires. Finding friends, a place to belong, and falling in love made this story work for the characters and I enjoyed the steps of the journey.
Sarah Collier is supposed to be getting married, and it is time, but no one has come for her. Finally she is told the groom is not coming, and she checks her phone, and she has a text. The two families are fighting over this, and no one checks on her, so she decides to run and go on the honeymoon that was already paid for and scheduled by herself. She is staying in a beautiful manor home in Scotland. Her first night she wanders into a pub, and the pub owner and singer in the band, Bretton Keith is quite taken with her. She also finds him attractive. They keep crossing paths, and start spending time together. They both confide their saddest days/moments, and have both been in bad relationships. They agree this will have no attachments/no regrets. But will they both be able to honor that? Bretton sees and understands things about Sarah that no one else ever has. He builds her up and accepts her exactly as she is. She does the same with him. There are also many other amazing characters in the book - the band mates, Donald and Alan at the pub, and Eleanor, the owner of the inn. This is a story about finding yourself, and finding love in the process. I have never read this author before, but I know I will be looking for more of her works after reading this one. I could not put it down, and read it in one sitting.
Read and reviewed this book on behalf of A Kiss Down Under Book Blog...
What a awesome book I can't say enough about what a great love story it is, I fell in love with this book after just the first chapter. I don't want to give away to much but I will give a little insight of this story..Dumped at the alter by your groom is not exactly something you want, but is it something that you are thankful for? Sarah being that bride decides that she didn't want pity she wanted to just get away think about her life and what SHE wanted. Always doing the right thing by her family she leaves without telling anyone and goes on her honeymoon by herself to find herself. As the book goes on she finds herself finding what is best for her and finding happiness despite what her family wants for her. The author did a great job building the characters and making their story come to life, loved the dynamic of the story and the friendships that are built.. A must read I didn't want to put it down and was sad that it ended.... Such a heartwarming book....
I won this book in a giveaway. it sounded like a sweet read. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was so much more. Sarah escaped to Scotland after being stood up at the alter. Exploring town she finds herself in a local pub listening to music. Bretton Keith the owner of the pub, felt the attraction to Sarah as she walked in the door. He has been burnt before and doesn't want to head down that path again. As they spend time together they both feel the pull but time is slowly running out. I fell in love with Sarah and Bret. Both such sweet individuals. Unsure where what they have is going, but at the same time not wanting to lose what ever it is. The book flows at a steady pace and the romance plays an important part, but it is also Sarah finding her way in the world and finding out who she really is. Sometimes you just have to follow where fate takes you.
This amazing book was written by my mother's beautiful and talented cousin, Adrienne Dunning and I would highly recommend checking it out. I laughed, I raged (in a good way) and I just about cried. I don't normally read adult books, because I don't feel they're something I can necessarily relate to quite yet, but I still found the romance adorable and the image of Scotland that was created very easy to picture and it provided a nice backdrop to the story. Every time I was worried that something was going to work out in a clichéd way, I was pleasantly surprised by the plot going in a direction I didn't expect. Adorable and funny book that I would recommend if you like adult romance or even if you don't.
This story started off breaking my heart. But like all good love stories sometimes you just need a little heartache to find true love. I was worried about how things would work out and I was afraid I would be set up for more heartache. I want tell you how it ends but if you love a good romance story this is for you. It's sweet simple and absolutely worth the one click.
This is a new to the indie world author but you would never know she is new by reading this beautiful story. It's well written and a fresh new story line. It's wrote in narrator point of view and very well done.
I was given this book in return for a honest review.
What I liked: the setting, all the characters, the theme
What kept me from reading this story until I was down to my last book: the cover. PLEASE CHANGE THE COVER
What the writing did that kept it from being a better read: details of the inconsequential (picked up remote from the table)... and not enough detail of the area. I would have liked a better feel of the pub!
I really never felt Sarah had an identity. Maybe that was the plan, but it kept me disconnected as a reader from the main character. Loved Bret!
Wow, Ive read alot of books about Brides and Grooms being left on their wedding days but this is one you wont want to miss. She decides she is going on her honeymoon with out beginning married, its time to get out and try to figure out what is going on in her life and what needs to change. She goes to Scotland and this is where she finds herself as well as finding what truly is a 2nd chance for love. The author really did a great job with this book you will not be sorry.
What can I say about this awesome book. I loved every page of this story! I feel in love instantly with Sarah and my heart was breaking for her at the beginning. Then along came Bretton.... the chemistry between them is amazing and they way this talented author described the inn and pub I felt like I was there!!! Definately a must read and cant wait to read more from this amazing author!!!!
I always like a good runaway bride book and this is another one to add to that list. Stranded on her wedding day on a whim Sarah decides to take her honeymoon...alone. This is the story of her live on impulse and the Scottish tavern owner she meets along the way. Sweet, lighthearted and fun to read.
