Florida's tourism agency spent a million dollars to hire Pitbull to sing the praises of Florida's beaches. The agency should have given that money to Tamara Lush instead. Her novel "All I Ask" is a lovely advertisement for what a wonderful and weird place Florida can be.
The book doesn't waste any time getting into its story, either. Isabella, aka "Bella," is a disaffected princess from a minor European kingdom who's into the environment and charity work. She shows up at a resort on Paradise Island looking to avoid dealing with her overbearing mother, who's pushing her to marry a prince from another country whom she finds repugnant. Turns out he's also been caught on camera snorting cocaine off the butt of a stripper in Vegas, so the paparazzi are all over that story.
At the resort she meets a handsome environmental lawyer named Tate. His family owns the resort and he's instantly smitten with Bella without knowing anything about her background. He asks her to dinner, but before they can go she gets busted for allegedly harassing an alligator while on a solo kayak trip. (The alligator started it.) Tate winds up representing her in the case, which means no hanky panky because that would get him in trouble with the Florida Bar.
How can you not enjoy a story like that?
Lush, an AP reporter in Florida, works in some excellent references to important Florida environmental issues, including the welfare of its turtles. There's also a dog that takes an inappropriate whiz on the princess' travel pillow but otherwise is pretty cute. In other words, she touches on some heavy issues, but overall this book is light and funny and enjoyable.
Eventually the gator case is disposed of and the two lovebirds do get together. The sex scenes, while fairly explicit, don't overwhelm the story or characters -- in fact, they broaden our understanding of who the characters are. There are a couple of additional twists to the story before it ends with a tease to the next book in the series, this one involving a woman who dresses up like a mermaid.
So here's the Visit Florida pitch: Come on down to Florida, folks -- you'll see beautiful sunsets and walk on a lovely beach and who knows? You might even see a gator tangle with a princess!
