Peter Thompson grew up on the east side of Chicago, in the shadow of the steel mills where the air was sooty and smelled of sulfur. His life wasn’t always so gritty, but the grit and realism finds its way into his thrillers. He has always loved stories of every kind, and one of his joys is finding a way to get inside character’s heads, seeing the world as they see it and feeling their triumphs, pain, and fear. He visualizes his characters when he writes, and they are larger than life in the big screen of his imagination.

Before pursuing his passion and becoming a full-time author, he tried his hand at everything from factory work, breaking cement in a construction crew, running his own pizza shop, and he was a well-regarded presence in the mortgage industry for nearly thirty years. When he isn’t writing, Peter loves, spicy food, live music, and exciting and thought-provoking books and movies. He is a fitness buff who loves to spend time with his grown sons and is looking forward to traveling the world and seeking adventures with his lovely partner.

I really enjoyed this book. The premise of this story is what really drew me in. Stories involving hit men can be quite entertaining but a hit man who learns that his next target is himself sounded like something that I needed to have in my life. It was really easy to slip into this book and I found it to be a wonderful listen.

Charley is a lot of things. He is a husband and a father living a pretty average life. Except for the fact that he works as a hit man. No one knows who is his or what he really does. Everything pertaining to his occupation is handled anonymously. Or so he thought. When he finishes up a job and gets his next assignment, he is in for a huge surprise because he is the next target.

When Charley learns that someone wants him dead, he is determined to learn who exactly wants him dead while he protects himself from other would be assassins. In order to do this, he must really look at his life and try to find if there is anyone someone knows about his chosen career path or if the hit was sparked by something else. Everyone is a suspect and Charley knows that he should trust anyone at this point.

I had fun watching Charley try to determine who it is that would like to see him dead. Some of his initial assumptions didn't quite pan out but I liked how he was willing to look at everyone in his life. Charley ended up being a rather good detective and I found myself working to put the pieces together right along with him. There were some pretty exciting scenes that kept things interesting and the mystery did keep me guessing.

Gary Tiedemann did a fantastic job with the narration. He really became the voice of Charley and helped to bring the story to life. I loved the way he was able to make Charley sound sensible and analytical at times but completely ruthless at other times. He had a wonderful voice that I found very easy to listen to for hours at a time. I wouldn't hesitate to listen to more of this narrator in the future.

I would recommend this book to others. It had a really interesting premise and I think that it was executed very well. I wanted to see Charley work out who was out to get him and come out of this okay. I plan to check out more of Peter J. Thompson's work in the future.

I received a review copy of this audiobook from the narrator via Audiobook Boom.

Initial Thoughts
I liked this one. I thought that the premise was great. What would a hit man do if his next target was himself? It was entertaining watching Charlie try to figure out who wants him dead. Everyone is a suspect and he has a deadline. I thought that narration was fantastic and really added to my enjoyment of the story.

Charlie has a good life, a nice family, wonderful wife and money to live comfortably in a nice area. But he has a little secret, he is in the 'family' business- following his father who used him on 'contracts' from a young age. He is a 'problem fixer', a person calls an agency and pays money for their problem to disappear, then Charlie is notified and takes care of it!
Unbeknownst to him his wife has started to wonder about his job, which he never tells her anything about, and finds a license with his picture but totally different name! While his wife is trying to figure out what this means, Charlie has no idea and goes about his business. Things are doing good until the next contract arrives from the agency. His mind is blown as he looks at himself, pictures with his family and his Real name!
The suspense intensifies as Charlie tries to find out who took a hit on him, and really explodes when his wife takes the kids and leaves!!
This is such a different and exciting concept for a story, I was completely enthralled beginning to end. I received an ARC from author Peter J.Thompson, who I thank for such an explosive story and I give you my honest feelings in this review, urging you to read this new look at the 'family business'!!

I loved the unusual if not unique premise of this book, in that a hit man who is hired to kill himself! But to me there was too much irrelevant babble, just trying to pad the book out. The only time, the story felt “tighter” was the last 20% or so. I know the main character is a hit man and therefore not necessarily a “nice” man, but I didn’t really feel any connection, and part of me wished someone would hurry up and kill him. Would of shortened the book!

If the ending had been good then it may have saved the book. But no the ending was meh. I was happy to close this and move on. I really tried my best to like this but I just couldn't get into it. 2.5 stars. Could of easily been a DNF at several points.

Peter Thompson's third book Hit Me grabbed me from the start and held me tightly to the end. Once again he has put together a well written suspense novel with well written characters you can't help but like. Charley, the book's "hero"/ narrator is a professional hit man who received his next hit. The problem is he is the hit. Charley may be a killer but I couldn't help but like him and of course root for him. The story is fast paced, clearly written, at the right times suspenseful. Peter Thompson seems to put you into Charley's mind as he works to find out who wants him dead. His wife, his best friend, his dad who is also a hit man? As with both his previous novels ( which were both amazing and I highly recommend Living Proof and The Runaway) this would make a great movie and it was written smoothly and I felt as though I were watching a movie while reading. I received an advanced copy of this book with nothing asked in return. I am voluntarily submitting the same review I would if I had purchased this book. Which by the way I will be purchasing. Thank you Peter Thompson for a great book and a great escape.

A good thriller for a lazy rainy afternoon. Charley is a loving family man who on the front is a free lance consultant . The twist being though, he is an assassin for hire , who did not choose the profession rather the profession chose him as his father introduced him to this at an early age of 6. He is good , secretive and elusive at his work, the problem arises when he receives his next hit details : himself. Now he has to trace back to find out who has ordered the hit , which is difficult as he never came in direct contact with his employers or clients. He has to race against time to find out the details and uncover secrets long buried to save not only himself but also to keep his family unaware and safe.

The plot is impressive : an assassin hired to kill himself. The pace never falters, not too many characters or twits or situations to confuse. I wanted to finish this non stop. It was such a compelling story and the ending is a surprise. Though the only shortfall for me was the reason for the hit . I expected more. But still it is very much worth the time and effort.

Another great thriller from Peter Thompson! This is my 3rd Thompson novel and I have enjoyed them all, though I did enjoy The Runaway just a tad more than this one. The thing I liked most about this book is that Charley could be an unreliable narrator. The story had me guessing for most of the book; did Charley have his facts straight or was he really a bit deluded, walking that thin line of insanity? That suspense had me glued to the story.

The ladies are few and far between in this novel and really, you could basically leave them out and the story wouldn’t be missing anything. So, obviously I would have liked them to have more of a presence. That’s the only weak spot for this novel though.

Hit Me reminded me a little of that John Cusack movie (Gross Pointe Blank) where he plays a hit man who wants a normal life and thinks of himself as a generally good guy. Charley honestly cares about his family and takes an active, positive role in their lives… but we do see streaks of anger management issues as his professional life starts to unravel. Someone has put a hit out on him! Oh, my!

The balance of action and Charley’s introspection was well done. I was never bored but I got to know Charley, which fed into that suspense I mentioned above. I love that there are multiple possibilities as to who might want Charley dead. I also love that he has to work hard to figure out who is behind it.

The ending does wrap up the big questions and yet it still leaves the door open for a sequel. If we get a sequel, I will be very happy with this ending. If we never get a s sequel, then this ending will nag at me like a loose tooth. All together, a worthy thriller. 4.5/5 stars.

The Narration: Gary Tiedemann continues to give us great narration of Peter Thompson’s works. He had a great voice for Charley, making him sound sincere at all the right moments but also giving voice to that trained killer as well. I really liked his snotty voice for the lawyer Pat. His kid voices were great too, especially for Jason who was throwing some attitude around. The pacing was perfect and there were no technical issues with this recording. 5/5 stars.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Peter Thompson. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

I just finished Hit Me by Peter Thompson. My mind is still reeling.

Hit Me is a suspenseful thriller about a "fixer of problems" named Charley Fieldner. He is an average looking man, a husband, a father, a brother...and he just happens to kill people for a living, for the Agency. Charley is a very likeable guy, one you would trust to coach your kids in soccor or have over for a barbeque with your family. I found myself assigning Charley as the victim in this book and rooting for him.

Hit Me starts at a really good pace. This is my favorite type of beginning to a book. It doesn't take several dull chapters to introduce you and get you invested in the the characters. This is an instant connection. This book keeps on at a great pace, so much so, that there never seems a good place to stop. If you are like me you will want to read this in one sitting. It is like a decadent chocolate bar. Sometimes you eat it one square at a time, but this one, you eat it all.

This hit man, or fixer of problems, is assigned a new target...Charley Fieldner. All of a sudden his perfect life is plunged in to a paranoid race against the clock. Somebody wants him dead. The Agency will stop at nothing to make sure that happens.

To everybody he knows, Charley is just a regular guy. He does not fit in the 6'5", super handsome, ripped abs, butt-kicking, action & adventure mold that so many characters are written. He is an average guy, using his wits and investigative skills, to flush out who wants him dead, and it is harder than he thought.

Hit Me is a thriller with a few unique twists I haven't read before. It adds to the plot and gives the book a freshness that readers, who love a good thriller, just crave. The ending is quite unexpected. As the adrenaline is rushing and you think you, and Charley, have it all figured out... It is that ending that leaves you reeling, that has you quickly reassessing the characters, that twist that you wished every thriller had.

I was given a copy of Hit Man, but this is a book I would gladly pay to read. And it goes on my short list of books I will read again.

"To life: the taking and the giving."
Charles Fieldner is a fortunate man. He has a beautiful wife, whom he loves, two children, a girl and a boy, who love him, a nice home, and the income to maintain a comfortable lifestyle for them all. And as he approached 40 he'd started to think about retiring even though he's still good at his job - as a contract killer. Then the Agency contacted him with the information on his next target: himself. He has two weeks to find out who wants him dead before the contract passes to someone else.

This is an intriguing plot line and one which could go horribly wrong without the author's first gaining the reader's sympathy for his main protagonist. But Peter Thompson achieves this by writing in the first person, opening up the inner fears, hopes and memories of Charlie showing him to be just an average, ordinary man like most everybody else. He's a problem solved with his own code of ethics: everyone he removes is 'a bad man' who should not be allowed to live. But despite his being well written, for this reader it was the excellent narration by Gary Tiedman which made Charlie the hero, or rather, the victim we want to survive. Mr.Tiedman's very pleasantly hypnotic voice softly brings to us a real presence of the character, removes the threat and emphasizes his likeability. And his frailties. A very fine performance.

This is a book which involves the reader from the start and maintains tension throughout. Not perfect, however: their are some inconsistencies along the way which finally become irritating. But again the narration is able to eloquently gloss over these until the ending at last re!eases the reader from it's spell,
I am indebted to the rights holder of Hit Me, who, at my request, freely gifted a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much. I will definitely be looking out anothers by this author, curious to see if the style of writing here is his normal one. Despite some flaws or unanswered questions in the plot, I really enjoyed this book and can recommend it as a light, fun, imaginative mystery thriller.

I have never read a book quite like this before. The plot immediately grabbed my interest: the story is told in the first person by an assassin who gets his assignments anonymously from an agency on the deep web. His latest assignment: himself. Finding out who wants him dead and why and of course protecting himself from any other hit men assigned the job, occupies all his time and attention. His personal life immediately takes a hit as he is unable to play the role as consultant, husband and father to his family’s satisfaction. In fact the first people he suspects of wanting him dead are his wife and best friend.
The back story is fascinating as gradually we learn how he came to his calling as an assassin. I quickly became invested in his search for those pulling the strings in this cat and mouse game.
So all the ingredients of a powerhouse best seller are in place except for two thing. It is hard to be sympathetic for a man who kills for money without much justification and even more importantly in a book, the narrator is totally unsympathetic. He admits he lacks any charisma which is an asset as a hit man but not so much as the hero of his own narrative. Even worse, he is self-absorbed with a very high opinion of his abilities and intellect, despite the fact that one time after another he is the author of his own misfortunes, as he reaches and acts on conclusions that are just not warranted.
So here is the $64 question. Is this a failing of the book or the best and most satisfying ingredient in the whole mix? Are we readers expected to be smarter than our narrator and enjoy that superiority right up to the end? If that’s the case, Peter Thompson is an even better writer than I originally thought. Given his other demonstrated talents, I’m going to conclude that this was all part of the author’s clever plan. Well done!

This thriller started with a great plot, being hired to kill... himself. Then, throughout the story we discover our killer is not exactly the cool and methodical stereotype, but an emotional guy that keep making hasting decisions. This gave the story a fun undertone, even thought it is a good thriller with lots of action, suspense and interesting characters.
There are some plot decisions that bother me a bit, even though I found the ending interesting.
Stop reading if you wish to avoid **spoilers** of any kind.

From the very beginning I though the main question not who wanted him dead but why did he received the contract if he only received orders to kill bad guys. If he was targeted for being a killer then they know who he is and this kind of mistake is sloppy. The mistake escuse is not convincing. Then, the wife finding the ID. It is never said it was planted (I believe it was). And finally, the person that ordered the hit (no, I'm telling) apparently could take care of the mater himself, even with total ease. Believe me. So why all this trouble. At some point I even thought he could be losing his mind like his father...

Bottom line, interesting thriller but with some major plot points that I would revise.

Hit Me is a clever, compelling book with great central premise. Well-written, unexpected, and with great pace, it draws the reader effortlessly through its twists and turns, unfolding to a really satisfying conclusion.
It’s a thriller and a mystery and a roller-coaster ride : you’ll not be disappointed and you’ll want your friends to read it too. But you may find, as I did, that it stays with you longer than that. Beneath the central premise is another killer move: this contract killer isn’t the cold, emotionless psychopath who traditionally claims that role, nor even a study in damaged, twisted psychology. Charley is just an ordinary guy, doing the job that he’s fallen into – like anyone else in a job that might happen to destroy lives: gun-selling, politics, soldiering... He has secrets – but who doesn’t? He’s a loyal husband, decent father, caring son, good mate. By refusing to “other” this central figure, Peter Thompson allows the reader to engage and identify, giving the book an easy, exciting quality. It’s doesn’t, when reading it first, feel noir, nor even particularly disturbing.
It’s only rather later that it troubles your sleep…

This book grabs your attention from the first page to the last. Charley Fieldner is a hired killer. He obviously doesn't use his real name with the agency. The agency contacts him through the dark web and gives him his assignments. One day, he receives an assignment to kill Charley Fieldner. He is supposed to kill himself? Who would want him dead? He only has a certain amount of time to get the job done, so it's a race against time to find out who is behind this hit contract. In the process, his wife somehow finds one of his secret identities and thinks he's up to no good. She take the kids and moves out. So now he has that added stress. His list of suspects are his wife, his best friend, or maybe his sister or dad. His dad happens to be the one who trained him to be a hit man because he was too! There is a lot of action going on as he has to work his way through all of the suspects and narrow it down to the one who wants him dead. Along the way you learn a lot about his odd childhood with his father, and how he turned out to be the way he is today. Excellent read! A hitman's next hit comes in, and its himself? Charley is seemingly a normal guy, he has a family he deeply cares for, he just has a secret side to himself that he feels he keeps contained but inevitably his two worlds begin to collide and both begin to suffer. He has no choice but to question everyone in his life that means the most to him.
Normally I am not a fan of books that are told in the first person but in this particular story I think it works out to the reader's benefit because the reader is able to follow the thought processes so the reader finds information out along with Charley. While another aspect to consider is the reader really only know the other characters and even Charley himself the way that he sees them. Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time trying to find out who placed the hit and why.
Thompson did an excellent job with this, my only complaint is there are loose ties that are not answered which leaves the reader wanting more.

This is a great novel. I loved everything about it right from the basic premise of the story: a hit man gets a contract to kill… himself?! I was looking forward to reading it and I was not disappointed. It has everything from action, fights, mystery, even a bit of ‘whodunnit’ to love and family life all mixed up in one book. Peter J Thompson has managed to weave all these elements together nicely creating a character that is full of life (at least for now?). This is all wrapped up in a tale crammed full of suspense too. Although the subject matter might be fantastical it’s written so well that you’re drawn in and believe everything you’re told. Hitman for hire? Why, of course! There’s detail explaining how our hero goes about his work, and the subsequent investigation, but it never feels overloaded. There’s never an over use of words for the sake of it. I couldn’t get enough of this one and read it next to no time.

A bit hit and miss for me. The narrative tells us that Charley is capable, confident and professional but shows us in his actions the complete opposite. The amount of times he made a decision about who and why, without any real proof was frustrating. Fortunately the author did write an intriguing enough story that wanted me to keep reading to find out what happened. The story was a fast paced and easy read.

My enjoyment would have probably been higher if not for the ending, which was a bit anti-climatic and the reason why (for the hit on him) didn't really make sense.

Thank you to BookSirens and the publisher / author for providing me with a free electronic copy of this book for review.

I knew I would enjoy the narration of this book, because I have listened to another book by Gary Tiedemann before, and that book was also written by Peter J. Thompson so that was a plus!

Hit Me is a fast-paced murder mystery, and it's fantastic. I couldn't figure out who wanted Charley dead! I had my suspicions, and I was so wrong every time! I finally just gave up trying to figure it out! This book will most definitely have you second-guessing yourself and keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time! I HIGHLY recommend!

Hit Me: A Killer Mystery Thriller by Peter J. Thompson is a fast-paced murder mystery that is sure to pull you in from the start. A suspenseful thriller about Charley. He is what some would call a fixer of problems, someone who loves to know why, a husband, father, brother and a killer. Charley kills people for a living. On the outside he seems like a likeable honest, loving man but on the inside he is a ruthless killer. Can he keep his secret or will the past catch up with him? Hit Me will have you second guessing and will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end!

Audiobook Review

This is my second title from author Peter J. Thompson. The premise intrigued me; a hit man who gets assigned to his own hit. Crazy, right? The story was a psychological masterpiece as Charley tries to decipher who put a hit on him. His wife? His best friend? His sister? Or his dad? The list is not that long but it certainly presents its challenges. I was thrilled with the story until the end. It seemed anticlimactic and rushed.

As the narrator, Gary Tiedemann was methodical in his portrayal of Charley. Tiedemann embodied the character and it resonated with me.

I always enjoy books by Peter Thompson, and this was no exception. Except for a couple contrived events to move the story the right way, the whole concept was very enjoyable. A hit man’s contract is to “remove” himself. With time constraints in effect, he must execute the contract before it’s assigned to someone else. The interplay between the characters is raised a notch when protagonist tells the story in first person, allowing the reader special insight. When I first saw the information about this book, I thought that it was a very interesting concept. A hit man who receives a contract to kill HIMSELF! Who would have put out a contract on a simple family man? Well-developed characters and a great deal of thought and detail have been put into this story. Absolutely loved it

What a very unique perspective on crime. Mr Thompson brings this story to your mind within the very first few words. I was totally hooked into the story so hard that it was impossible to put the book down. It is a wonderful pleasure to get to read this story. I plan on picking up the next book as soon as I can. I can’t wait to see what the author has in mind for the next book’s perspective.

I admit I was intrigued by story line ... a hit man hired to kill himself ... but the book just didn't deliver for me. The story takes you through a range of wild scenarios as the hit man tries to figure out who wants him dead and the ending will surprise you. I stuck with it mainly because I wanted to see who put out the contract.

******* AUDIOBOOK REVIEW *******

I was so nervous for the first hour of Hit Me by Peter J. Thompson. It was so slow and I was really worried that it wasn’t going to pick up the pace. The Runaway was such an action packed story from the first work that I wasn’t sure about this next one. But Peter Thompson finally pulled in me after that first hour. Charley is the main character, the hit man. You’ll either love him or hate him. I grew to like him and really root for him! It’s a quick, thrilling story. You’ll wade through the thicket of who would want him dead enough to pay for it. This ended up being a deeper story than I had expected.

The narrator, Gary Tiedemann, is seriously hypnotic to listen too. He’s what kept me entranced when I felt the story was having a hard time getting going. His voice is pleasant to listen to. It’s a nice strong voice with a great tone. I enjoyed his voice with this storyline specifically. He was a great hitman!
