Making Over Maris by Sabrina York When über-nerd Jack asks Sara to make him more attractive to women, she can't say no--even though it's an impossible task. He's shaggy and doughy and hopelessly inappropriate. He has no style or emotional intelligence but he's a good person. And a great friend. What Sara never expects? Beneath all that fur and geekiness is a steamy hunk just waiting to emerge. Jack takes Sara's regimen very seriously, working out and losing weight until he feels like a new man. He even complies with her command to shave his beard--because Jack didn't ask Sara to make him over so he would be attractive to other women. He only wants to be attractive to her. They go on a series of fake dates, each hotter and more sinful than the last. It's not long before Sara discovers Jack's secret desire to be dominated and what began as an arrangement becomes something amazing--something that could be real. Wired Series by Sabrina York When brothers Tristan and Adam started a tech company with their college friend Jack, they made one firm, unbreakable thou shalt not fish in the company pond. What a pity all three men find themselves entangled with women they cannot resist! Book 1: Adam's Obsession 2013 Passionate Plume Finalist Book 2: Tristan's Temptation Book 3: Making Over Maris PRAISE FOR MAKING OVER 5 STARS S&M Book Obsessions “A sweet but very hot erotic romance.” Long And Short Reviews 5 STARS. “A hot, steamy read, with a little bit of angst” The To Be Read List “This is how femdom can be sweet and steamy hawt!” The Romance Reviews
In this third book in the Wired series, another geek bites the dust! I've been waiting for this story to come out. The reason why? I wanted Jack who is such a jerk in the first two books to receive his comeuppance. I bitched about him to Ms York and repeatedly suggested that instead of being a dominant like the other two in this series, Jack the techno geek should be a submissive to a dominant female. I also wanted him to get his ass reamed out hard! Pegging, dub-con, breaking Jack down so he's a sniveling pussy were included in my request. When Ms York agreed to consider writing about Jack, she did say he would be a submissive and whimpering. Rubbing my hands with glee, I eagerly awaited the spanking Jack deserved.
Colour me completely shocked when I read the book. Instead of a dark tale of forced submission, Ms York creates a beautifully romantic tale about friends turning into lovers. When we learn more about Jack, it adds to his depth. From a character building perspective, Ms York does an amazing job. Usually, the leading male love interest is a "hero" with a small flaw which only the woman who loves him can "fix". I frequently roll my eyes at this abused trope.
Ms York turns this upside down because everything about Jack comes across as flawed. It's not just his looks. He is rude, crude and clueless. His makeover "My Fair Lady" style is very well done. Ms York captures the confused male who doesn't understand the female species. In addition, we learn why Jack is the way he is and it's a bit heartbreaking. In Jack, we see not an ugly duckling transformation. What we see is the heart of gold hidden behind a prickly wall.
From a femdom perspective, Sara is awesome. She's a more realistic portrayal of a woman with sexual dominant tendencies in a world where it's more socially acceptable for a man to be the sexual aggressor. The heartbreaks she's experienced when males reject her proclivities will make a reader wince. It doesn't matter, female or male, rejection is rejection. It still cuts to the quick. Sara leading Jack into the world of femdom is steamy hawt. The BDSM in this story is just right and perfect for those who want to take a dip into the fun world of femdom.
This story is more than just erotic sex and a Cinderella make-over. It is about friendship bonds which strengthens and morphs into a sensual loving binding. The added humor with process flows and geek speak only appeals to my inner geek. Ms York exceeds my expectations in this sweet erotic romance. She ran with it in a manner that is better than I could have imagined. This is my favorite book of hers, which is odd since Jack was previously my most loathed character in her books. I love having things turned completely 180 degrees on me.
This is an entertaining book which will captive the reader and force them to read it one sitting. This kinky romance is highly recommended to beginning femdom lovers.
Have you guys ever listened to the podcast “My Dad Wrote A Porno”? This book feels just like that. An ever-so-slightly more sophisticated version of a book that’s only famous because it is comically bad. Only this is worse, because this is not bad enough to be a comedy book. This is not a Sandra Hill or Rocky Flintstone. This is just infuriating and sexist, and it only managed to make me laugh in moments when I simply could not think of another way to react to what was going on. I’m serious. About three baffling chapters in, I had to google the author, just to make sure it wasn’t some middle aged dude (who’s watched just a smidge too much trashy porn) hiding behind a feminine nom de plume. About six awful chapters in, I only kept reading out of pure, unadulterated spite.
Look. I read a lot of romance, of many different kinds, of many different sources. I usually find it fun, even the stereotypical stuff, because the obvious wish-fulfillment with the Big Beefo Bearman protagonists with the mushy souls who are Very Into the obvious self-insert female lead, makes it endearing. But it is no exaggeration when I say that this was the single most shallow, charmless, horrifically sexist romance novel that I have ever read from beginning to end. Hell, the best way I can describe it is “Fifty Shades of Big Bang Theory”, and that is saying a lot.
Jack Maris isn’t just the opposite of the generic, soft-gooey-insides-of-a-beefcake male romantic lead because he’s “nerdy”, but because he’s a manipulative, subtly predatory creep fetishizing his own submissiveness. He's a bona-fide Neckbeard(tm) who constantly objectifies the ever-loving shit out of the female lead, Sara I-Literally-Cannot-Remember-Her-Last-Name, who in turn is a flat and startlingly superficial, cardboard cutout of a character that reads like a middle aged bachelor’s confusing interpretation of a woman. With a sprinkle of sexual dominance awkwardly tacked on top. Not to mention that the last twenty pages or so read like they came from a completely different novel with an ending that comes way out of the left field, and since the whole situation is so improbable and oddly set up, it didn't even managed to produce an emotion other than annoyance in me.
I can’t say anything good about this. I just cannot. And I’m perfectly aware that this book is not the longest or even the worst thing in the world, but it’s JUST long enough of a thing that’s JUST bad enough to set the fires of hatred in my gut.
The sexual practices are unsafe (penetrating someone anally for the first time without any preparation or even a clear and honest discussion about how to proceed is just about the most dangerous thing you can do in bed), the message (“if only I change myself completely for this person I have creepily obsessed over for 15 years without ever having had any sign that they’d be into me, they’ll be into me -forever-”) is harmful and quite frankly dumb, the jokes (and half the dialogue) are overtly misogynistic, the plot is all over the place, and the tone is caught between being juvenile and sounding like someone’s gross uncle.
This is not a self-empowering fantasy. This is a sex-swapped version of an 80’s teen movie where the cheerleaders make over the nerdy girl who is suddenly fawned over by the popular jocks, just because she let her hair down and took her glasses off. Only 1985 was 32 years ago.
This book was simply marvelous. I loved it from the first line to the last. I wish I could give it 10 stars, because I don't think that I've enjoyed a book this much in quite a while. The story is funny and the dialogue between all of the characters is marvelous.
Jack Maris is a nerds, nerd. He's quirky, he doesn't get women (at all), but he is loyal and honest and fiecerly loveable. So loveable!! I rooted from him the moment the story started. I could have been completely biased because I love nerds so much, but it was so much more than that. If he wasn't a nerd, I still would have loved him.
I've not wanted two people to work out so badly. I never had concerns that Sara was too much for Jack, because she never was. They balanced each other perfectly. They really were one, needing each other so much.
I would highly, highly recommend this book. It most definitely is a book that I would read again and again. It's part of a set, but can definitely be read as a standalone, though I plan to read the others in the series.
Making Over Maris is book three in the Wired series by Sabrina York. I’ll make my usual disclaimer, which is: I don’t give spoilers in my reviews, but when I’m reviewing books in a series, it is often difficult, or impossible to avoid giving spoiler to the earlier books. Please, proceed with caution if you haven’t read Adam’s Obsession or Tristan’s Temptation.
I am a HUGE Sabrina York fan, I read all of her books as soon as they come out. Adam’s Obsession is one of my top ten books of all time. So when I found out Jack Maris was getting his own book, I was excited, and a little surprised. Jack wasn’t exactly a ladies man, or “hero” material in the earlier books. But I trust Sabrina to deliver in her stories.
Making Over Maris finds Jack deeply in love with his high school friend and co-worker Sara. He has been in love with her for years, and put himself in the friend zone just to be close to her. He is a self made millionaire, computer geek, and not overly attractive to the female population.
Sara is Jack’s best friend, and she is looking for Mr. Right. She thinks she has found him in Todd. The only problem is, once she revealed her true “nature” to Todd, he ran for the hills. Her true nature is that of a Domme. She is devastated by this rejection.
Jack comes up with a foolproof plan. He asks Sara to teach him to be irresistible to women. Well, a special woman. This is a common theme in romance novels, but here is where it gets a little different, since the GUY is the one being made over. None the less, it always makes me a little uncomfortable. I mean, are looks the ONLY thing people think about? I thought Sara was a little mean at times, but I think her personal issues with fear and rejection lent to that. I always wonder when someone changes their appearance and the other person magically sees them in a different light, if they go back to the old appearance, will the love fade away? I know, I know, I’m cynical. I can’t help it.
So, Sara starts instructing him on how to treat the ladies, taking him on “fake” dates, giving him reading materials, giving him a workout regimen. Jack puts his all into it, and excels, just as he does in everything. I love seeing how Sara’s perspective starts to change, and how Jack reacts to it.
Sara also has another surprise coming when she starts seeing signs that Jack might be more open to her Domme tendencies than any man in her past. They both have to face their fears and open their hearts to move beyond the “fake” dating and making things real.
I would be remiss in pointing out that it isn't very often that you get a really good BDSM novel that isn't over the top, but to have one that isn't over the top, AND has a female top? That is unheard of. You should read this book just for that reason. Sabrina York did an excellent job of portraying a fledgling D/s relationship (in a sexual sense).
As usual, this was a hot, steamy read, with a little bit of angst. Another five star read from Sabrina York.
I received this book as part of a judging panel. I was only required to read the first 30 pages, before judging it, then it was up to me if I wanted to finish it or not.
Did I want to continue after the first 30 pages. No I didn't, and I actually put the book aside for a few weeks. However knowing it was tagged as femdom I decided to pick it back up to see where it went. The story was very slow going and I admit to skimming pages at times. Sara was a shallow bitch. Jack Maris was a nerd trying to win Sara's attention by asking her to help make him over.
The story might have worked better for me, if the two MC's hadn't known each other for long, but they had gone to school together. Apparently Jack had always been there for Sara, yet she didn't know what had happened to his parents. The fact she couldn't see him for who he was as a person, until he lost weight etc was all very superficial!
The ending and trip to Paris were rather predictable, IMO.
So why three stars? The sex scenes and the hot tub were delicious. My inner Domme was satisfied.
I hadn’t read any of the earlier books in this series, but I will be grabbing them with my Santa offerings. Making Over Maris is a refreshing take on a Pygmalion story, but here the man is sorely in need of the polish.
Jack is rude, prickly, crude and utterly incapable of dealing properly with a female. Dork doesn’t even come close to definng his image, with his scraggly beard and inattention to his dress or physique. And well, there is this little problem – he makes flow charts and analyzes trends …. “If Yes: Charm her from her bad mood. If No: Proceed with cauthion”. “Proceed with caution? We’re not wild animals, Jack.” “You kind of are.” This he muttered.
But anyone who has worked with the denizens of the IT departments with the Star Trek posters, dim lights, Dr. Who memorabilia and the endless parade of black t-shirts referencing Shroedinger’s Cat or making puns of Pi will relate to his innate discomfort.
Yet all is not smooth in Sara’s world. Her own ego has taken several dings and her heart has been kicked often, leaving her unsure of her own self and desires, and believing that life will never be what she hopes so learning to settle is best.
But, gamely Sara takes on the task to make Jack a ladies man, and in the process finds that this diamond in the rough just might be the perfect fit for her life. Jack, for his part, went to her because of an undying attraction and desire for her to become his, and what better way to learn from the mistress herself.
With forays into romance novels, long discussions about life and trust, and several steamy scenes in which they test their own sexual desires and limits the story starts as a steam fest, but develops into a heartwarming and romantic story that shows the power of trust and honest communication.
You never really know just how a story from Sabrina York will affect you, but the Pont Marie in Paris, with a crib sheet outlining the steps to forever was the most perfectly delicious and romantic option possible.
I purchased a copy of this title for my own library. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
I don't usually care for "femdom", but this . . . Well, let me tell you, I loved this! Jack Maris was the sweetest (Yep! I said sweetest!) uber-nerd it has been my privilege to read about. The lengths he went to win the lady of his heart! To die for! Then to find out she is also his ultimate Domme! Now how special is that? And Sara! Frustrated, fledgling Domme. She has had her perfect sub under her nose since High School. Yep! In spite of the BDSM elements of this story, it was one of the sweetest romances I have read in a very long time. It had me sighing in longing. I have been reading Sabrina Yorks books for a while now. She is only getting better at her craft. I think this is her best book to date! It had the salacious sex she is known for, but the story! *sigh* It drew me in and made me so envious of what these two people found together. You just have to read this for yourself! Believe me, it will be worth it!
This is one of the most awesome books I have ever read! I do not usually get into female doms however this was amazing! jack and sarah had it all! chemistry out of this world, the man with money she cares nothing about, a girl that has her secrets and has been hurt and too scared to share them it was everything! I couldnt put it down I loved jack and sarah from the first moment of can I ask you a favor to all the way to the bridge in paris! :-) the female dom part was not over done so didnt put me off and he wasnt too submissive to make me want to rethink things about him! I just loved it all! have to go back and read the first 2 in the series now!

It feels as though I've been waiting forever for this third book in the Wired series, about the uber-nerd third partner in the tech corporation, but it was certainly worth the wait--5 stars!
Borrowing a page from Pygmalion, and in Sabrina York style, twisting it a bit, she finally gives us Jack's story, the partner we've only glimpsed briefly in Adam's Obsession and Tristan's Temptation, a doughy, messy, unkempt, disheveled, bearded geek with thick Coke-bottle glasses who seldom interacts with anything but a computer. Unlike Adam and Tristan, both of whom are gorgeous hunks, Jack simply hasn't the first clue about women, but having his business partners now over the moon about their new lady loves, Jack is jealous and realizes that he's lonely, and he sets his sights on the gal he's been crazy about since 7th grade, his friend, Sara, the company's marketing director, and he finally gets up the nerve to ask her to help turn himself into someone who will be more attractive to women. What Sara doesn't know is that he really wants her to turn him into someone who will be attractive to her. When she turns him down flat, he says he'll pay her any price she wants and they strike a bargain. Sara will do her best with him and her fee will be something she's dreamed of, spending a week in Paris, France, and her birthday dinner atop the Eiffel Tower accompanied by a sexy male escort.
As we learned about her previously, Sara is a bit kinky--she's into femdom, and the one time she tried that with Todd, the man she thought she loved, it cost her that relationship, although she's still not given up hope that he'll call her back. What Sara doesn't know is that while Todd might not have been into femdom, it's all Jack's dreamed of for years, and when he's completed every task she's set out for him diligently--the healthy diet, the workouts, the wardrobe and a complete salon makeover, under all that scruff was a seriously sexy man, although he's still clueless about women.
Will Sara get up the nerve to reveal her innermost desires to Jack? Will Jack admit to his own kink, or his own attraction to Sara? What will happen when Todd reappears and wants to try getting back together with Sara? What will happen when, following Sara's lessons, Jack starts to flirt with another co-worker? What will happen when Sara finally learns the reasons why Jack has always been such a scruffy mess? To find out the answers to these question, you're just going to have to grab a copy of this absolute confection of a novel, my favorite in this series. Prepare for a kinky, sizzling hot yet surprisingly heartwarming read. Sabrina York totally knocked this one right out of the park!
This is the third book in this series, another great addition and standalone. This time, the guy gets a makeover, and the journey there was equal parts funny and heartwarming to see as they fall in love, as well as accept one another for what they are.
This story focuses on Jack and Sara. Jack get the biggest makeover he could, all in an effort to win Sara. He makes a lot of positive changes, even as he struggles with self doubt. He's got a good heart, even if he is horrible with social cues. A true nerd. Sara has trouble finding someone who accepts her with her need for bondage. She's into femdom, as commanding as she is, and she is a little gun shy about it. She's got a good head on her shoulders, is confident in herself on all other ways, and very independent. Together, the two have a fun dynamic that I loved seeing since they're longtime friends, finally making the jump into more. Once they do, it's exciting, even as they make tentative steps and deal with their insecurities.
Overall I really liked this book. This whole series involved elements of BDSM, but this one was definitely a good kind of different since it involved the female in charge. The dynamic between them was healthy and only encouraged one another. The characters from previous novels were back, and it was great to see them more. Likewise, the writing and editing were also done well, with few errors and a story that moved nicely.if you read the two previous books and didn't always have the greatest opinion of Jack like I did, then you should definitely read this one. It helped a lot in my opinion of Jack, to see his back story. Another highly recommended read!
Ahhh the long-awaited story of Jack and Sara. I really loved this story, it's my favourite out of the series so far. Why? It just had a lot of things I liked in it.
It had a flawed, geeky hero. I love a nerd. I like that they aren't polished, that they get embarrassed, they say the wrong thing, they make mini robots at their desks. I love it all. My only gripe was that if anything I wanted Jack to be even worse than he was! In the first book he is a real idiot. He doesn't read social queues and says completely inappropriate things. I thought we would get more of this but in fact, we got less of it. I can forgive this though, as the backstory of Jack was unexpected, yet really helped you realise why he was like he was.
This is a makeover storyline which I love. Sara helps Jack become attractive to the opposite sex with a series of lessons etc. It's always a good storyline in my book. I loved how it all developed. What surprised me though was the sense of friendship between the two. This wasn't just instalust, you definitely felt that the two connected which made it a compelling read.
It was hot! I think this is the hottest novel so far. The whole femdom thing worked pretty well here. I liked it and I liked Sara's vulnerability over it. I would say it's not very hardcore for BDSM, so I wouldn't be put off reading this if it's not your thing.
It was actually quite soppy. I don't usually go for love hearts and sunsets but the ending was saccharine sweet, yet it worked. I heaved a sigh at the end and wished Jack could be my book BF.
I'm sorry but I don't think I've ever read a female character I hated more, which made me question Jack too because how could anyone ever want to be with someone who acts like that? I wanted to put this book down so many times but I soldiered on, and now I'm regretting it. Her behavior, view and treatment of Jack, disgusted me to be honest. The most shallow and selfish character I've ever read, the reaction to her friends happiness? Wow. I'm not even talking about the femdom because that was the only redeeming quality to the book. It just wasn't for me.
This is the third book in the Wired Series when Uber-nerd Jack asks Sara to make him more attractive to women, she can't say no-even though it's an impossible task. A simply sensational novel with a highly captivating plot & I could not put it down. I loved the characters as Jack Maris was quirky & Sara is sassy with dom tendencies. A simply charming & humorous Cinder-Fella Novel. A sweet & sexy spicy decadently delisious read. My favorite book in this series. I highly recommend reading this novel as you will not be disappointed. I volunteerly reviewed an advanced reading copy of this book.
A short and fast-paced book about literally nothing. Kind of like eating tooth-rotting candy, which means it was perfect for a snowed-in day.
Jack is really only an asshole very briefly, a pleasant change from some romance novels. And while I was not a huge fan of Sara, she wasn't awful. I wish she hadn't been portrayed as such a shallow person. I think she maybe deserved better.
The story was a bit quick but overall decent, and I was glad that the author didn't string it out like they could have. A nice quick read for when you need a distraction with just enough sex to be steamy.
This was a sexy, well-written book. Jack asks Sara to help him be more attractive to women. It's an impossible task, but he's a good person and a great friend and she can't say no. He doesn't tell her that she is the woman he wants to find him attractive... It can be read as a stand-alone book, though it is part of a series with related characters. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading others by Sabrina York!
3 stars. A fast, cute read that lacked all subtlety. I expected something different, but realized it was because I mixed up Sabrina York with Sarina Bowen. So instead of a deep story, I got a shallow, light tale.
I did appreciate the makeover part, which was what sparked me to actually pay 3.99 for this book when it wasn’t available at the library or via kindle unlimited.
Making Over Maris is the third book in the Wired series and what a series it is. I have been looking forward to Jack and Sara’s story and I loved every minute of it. I hope to read many more books by this author and if you haven’t had the chance I suggest you try her books too.
Awful, awful characters. The heroine is a self-centered, shallow bitch who clearly only valued her friendship with the hero once he was cleaned up. Ugh.
As much as this book had me snorting and cackling like a mad woman it also had me crying towards the end. This whole series was a truly fantastic read.
2.5 stars. This is F/m erotic romance and I thought the erotic part worked much better than the romance. The heroine's insecurity and jealousy got tiresome, and while the hero flirting with another woman in front of her was understandable at first, it got annoying when he kept on doing it. Add in some Other Man jealousy over her loser ex and a dramatic last-minute misunderstanding and I ended up feeling like they were both immature and shallow, and not in a fun way.
