Private eye DB has a pretty unusual partner. Jesse's been in his office a lot longer than he has, hanging around like ghosts kinda have to. They do pretty well together, playing chess and solving cases, which Jesse figures is better than an eternity popping in and out of walls.
The new case they take seems pretty average, but it turns out to be more than they bargain for. DB and Jesse end up embroiled in a murder investigation, one that might leave an innocent man in jail if they don't get it solved. They have a lot more to learn about each other, too, but can a man and a ghost find any common ground to touch on?
Drew Zachary is the pen-name of co-authors Chris Owen and Vic Winter.
"Born in the wilds of Canada, Drew grew up with an axe in one hand and a book in the other. Drew's love of writing is outshone only by his love of men. Lucky for him, he can combine the two.
From his father, Drew learned how to wield that axe, fix a carburetor and bake a mean can of beans using fire, gas or electricity. From his mother, he learned how to rotate the tires, turn apples into just about anything from cider to pie to a meatless lasagna, and how to swim. At twelve Drew ran away to join the circus, only to run away from it when he realized just how badly elephant poop stinks.
When Drew ran out of books to read he started writing his own and never looked back. His home is filled with books, unfinished manuscripts and his grandmother's knick knacks. His best friend is a dog named Barney and his pet fish keep him entertained for hours.
Drew writes about love because he still believes in it. Even though he's never found that special man himself, he's never given up hope. Well, never on a permanent basis, anyway."
This is fun, cute even; I'm not sure if you can label it erotica when one of the characters is a ghost, but it makes for an interesting angle. A PI with a ghostly sidekick - [tv series] Randall and Hopkirk all grown-up and discovering each other ;)
The crime is pretty much background, there is no mystery. I'd have liked a bit more to it's resolution; the show-down came sudden and was very convenient in that it took away the need for any actual detecting or evidence. Would have been nice to see John happy too.
Also what is probably me being hyper-picky
The ghost was at times very [film] 'Ghost'. There's a lot of banter and it's funny and cute 'Baby Teacups'! I wanted them to find a way to be together.
A short fic, it's not flawless but it is great fun; it had me smiling and it lifted my mood, which is all I can ask from a book. I'm definitely going to look up the next one. Maybe we'll discover DB's name...
Adorable, sexy, emotionally sweet. The murder plot was flat and pedestrian, but it wasn't the point. Due to the novella's brevity (fewer than 100 ereader pages), neither main character was fleshed out, but as the first in a series, this installment provided a teasing introduction that leaves the reader wanting to know more about them. And the ghost/man intimacy was perfectly done. 3.75 stars, rounded down for price ($4.50 for what amounts to a short story is too steep. But I'll pay it again for the next one.)
Never thought that I would describe an m/m fiction as CUTE, but this one is what that is. CUTE. DB has an "unusual" partner, a ghost by the name of Jesse. As they are working together to solve the usual case of cheating husband, sparks fly. Well, as much as it can fly between a human and a ghost :D. The story can be angsty, I mean come on, your lover is a ghost?? But the writing is witty and the protagonists are just adorable. You wish secretly that they find a way to make it work.
DB is a private investigator who has a rather intrusive partner Jesse. I say intrusive because Jesse is a ghost and DB doesn't particularly want him around, but he is handy. There are sort of two parallel stories. They take on a case of suspected cheating and find out the husband is having an affair with a man. When the husband is shot and the wife blames the lover, DB and Jesse are determined to prove that the lover is innocent. As well, despite DB telling Jesse to get lost, he's kind of starting to like him and when Jesse touches him he gets extreme tingles (if you get my drift). Part of the story is DB and Jesse figuring out their relationship and Jesse's upset if you will that he can't "feel" anything, that no one can touch him. However he starts to find out that now and then he can touch things, especially if he's experiencing high emotions and even sometimes after sex with DB (Jesse can masturbate), he can touch DB properly and DB can touch him but it usually doesn't last very long and he wasn't to find a way to make it permanent. I really liked both guys and how despite Jesse hanging around so much they didn't really know each other and they started to grow closer. Yes, DB was a bit freaked out by the fact that he was having sex with a ghost but he liked Jesse and it felt good so he just kind of went with it. There are sequels to this which I will definitely read because I want to know if Jesse can find a way to REALLY have sex with DB. :-) They mystery part was okay as well, not really a mystery but kind of a crime solving part. A cute read for sure and quite old I think. 2007 published.
DB is a private investigator of not much success. But he has something no other PI could have: his partner is a ghost, Jesse.
They share a pretty simple and quite life: resolve cases not so complicated, play chess and discuss a lot. They have never spoken of the private life of DB, cause Jesse has no private life, obviously, and seems neither DB.
But when DB discovers that Jesse is gay, like him, their relationship changes a bit: sex with a ghost seems a little weird and complicated, but DB can't deny the sudden passion he feels for Jesse. And Jesse wants badly to feels again a physical passion and to have the chance to share it with something else.
In the end the case on which DB and Jesse are investigating slip in second side and the struggle of Jesse to understand how he can have sex with DB plays the main role. Jesse is the engine of the story, DB is almost the let-the-things-flows type of characters. It is also a tender story and not creepy at all; maybe you will be a little sad for the two but you will have an open happy end to image how a ghost and a man can build a relationship together.
Funny, sweet PI story with added ghost. The case was kind of obvious, but that wasn't what this was all about. The guys were adorable and cute together. Loved it. I wonder if this author is still writing? Apparently this was a writing combo.
This was cute, and fun. The mystery was low key. I liked Jesse trying to figure out how to touch, and be touched. I can see how this could be great series, or grow old quickly. I'm hoping it continues to grow, and be great. I would love to see the character again.
A really fun and unique series. There are 4 novels and 2 short stories out so far but definitely room for more and more! Very interesting characters, although they have already met in the first story which was a little confusing at first as I though there was a book I missed but it's explained later, and entertaining stories. I will definitely be looking for more to read.
Very short, but kind of fun. It's basically erotica with a vague plot though, and no great mystery to the plot. I liked the characters though, especially Jesse.
Love love love the dynamic between the characters. This series is a wonderful fresh concept. I look forward to following these characters through many more adventures!
This one moved a bit slowly for me, but I was interested enough in how DB and Jesse were going to resolve their unique problem that I bought the rest of the series.
