Le prédateur marin menacé, comme vous ne l'avez encore jamais vu
La carrière de Michael Muller est faite de rencontres époustouflantes. Acclamé pour ses portraits des plus grands acteurs, musiciens et sportifs de ce monde, il s'est constitué, au cours des dix dernières années, l'une des plus impressionnantes collections de photographies sous-marines de requins.
La quête de précision et de proximité de Michael Muller pour décrire les requins est inédite. En un sens, il photographie le prédateur des mers comme s'il faisait son portrait à Hollywood. Il plonge au plus profond des océans pour approcher les requins, équipé uniquement de sa rampe brevetée de sept flashs de 1200 watts, développée en collaboration avec la NASA, dans un boîtier en plexiglas, et sans cage.
Cette collection inédite de clichés de Michael Muller, y compris la première photographie au monde du saut d'un grand requin blanc pendant la nuit, est une source d'excitation et de crainte respectueuse. Les photos, classées selon leur origine géographique, suivent les voyages de Michael, depuis l'Afrique du Sud avec ses requins bordés et ses requins-taureaux jusqu aux Bahamas, où l'on peut observer des grands requins-marteaux. Chaque voyage est accompagné de récits captivants décrivant les difficultés et les mauvaises rencontres évitées de justesse.
En écho à l'engagement de Michael Muller auprès d'associations telles que WildAid et EarthEcho, les images sont accompagnées de textes de Philippe Cousteau fils et de la biologiste marine Alison Kock qui évoquent l'exploration et la protection du royaume des mers. L'écrivain Arty Nelson, spécialiste du monde de la culture, quant à lui, présente le travail de Michael Muller. Enfin, une annexe technique décrit en détail l'équipement utilisé pour réaliser ces clichés spectaculaires. Ensemble, ces images et textes éclairants nous offrent un festival de photographies à couper le souffle, un hommage à la beauté et à la puissance du requin ainsi qu'un appel à préserver son avenir menacé.

Beautiful photographs, these stunning creatures should be protected at all cost and by looking at the images that only confirms it. 💕

Overall there were some rather striking photos in this book and good information for the laymen regarding shark finning and endangered status. However, I find it wholly strange that the publishers/photographer would choose to use such a large format book when many (most?) of the photos did not have the resolution for it. First of all, the photos not having the resolution is astounding in this day and age but to then put them in an over-sized book? Far too many of the photos lost their impact from their blurriness/lack of clarity due to the size. Far too many photos fell into this category and this fact was only proven by the index in the back where each photo was shown smaller. These smaller photos were crisper and more striking, only proving that the resolution was a problem at a large size. Another note on the book's format: why would you continue to use such a dark blue background with black ink? It made it quite difficult to read. And the index photo numbers? Nearly impossible to differentiate from their backgrounds. (To summarize: why did they format the book this way?! It took so much away IMO.)
In addition, the emphasis seemed to be on great whites. I'm a fan of great whites but considering how many shark species there are, so very very few were shown in this book. I think some real opportunities were missed overall.

This was definitely worth dragging it (and 14 other books) all the way from Library #4 to my home. :D Gorgeous photographs of one impressive, stunning creature, the shark. The book is huge, and contains black & white photographs, but also colour.

Es ist wie fast immer bei TASCHEN: Es wird ein ausgesprochen prächtiger Bildband geboten, der preislich eher günstig ist. Ein tolles Preis-Leistung-Verhältnis ist eine Sache, die andere Sache ist aber, dass dieser Bildband unzählige unglaubliche, wunderschöne, prächtige Bilder verschiedener Haie präsentiert. Mich faszinieren diese Tiere und das gilt ganz offensichtlich auch für Michael Mueller, der mit großem Aufwand und viel Liebe die Schönheit, die Kraft und auch die Seele dieser Tiere eingefangen hat.
Der Fokus liegt zwar auf den Bildern, die großartig sind, aber am Ende des Buches gibt es noch einige Essays, die sich mit den Haien selbst, deren Gefährdung und auch den Gründen, weshalb wir die Haie schützen und nicht schlachten sollten, beschäftigen. Zwei weitere Essays befassen sich mit Michael Mueller Werdegang und Schaffen und - höchst interessant - mit den technischen Entwicklungen, die nötig waren, um die Haie überhaupt so fotografieren zu können, wie es Michael Mueller letztlich tat.
Es gibt noch ein Verzeichnis der abgelichteten Haie und - sehr schön - noch einmal eine Miniaturübersicht der Bildes des Bandes, zu denen es noch kurze Infos gibt.
"Haie" ist ein Prachtband, eine Ode an den Hai und wert, immer wieder in die Hand genommen und durchblättert zu werden.

This book is amazing. Micheal Muller's style of photography worked well in capturing sharks as predators and prey. You can see and feel the passion in the pictures and in the essays in the book. I don't know what I was expecting when I opened the book but I was blown away by the detail in the pictures. The essays in the book weren't boring at all. They talked about the threats to sharks and how killing them hurts the ocean's ecosystem and how it affects us as well. I liked that in this book he wasn't trying to be preachy just stating easy to understand facts and what we can do right now to save the Sharks

Se valutassi solo il libro fotografico sarebbero 5 stelle, ma la parte esplicativa ha numerose lacune, soprattutto grafiche: testi piccoli neri su fondo blu elettrico, didascalie organizzate solo nelle ultime pagine con miniature delle foto, senza numeri di pagina scritti.
Bravissimo fotografo, meno i grafici!
