Choices

Rate this book
Robin Novak has made many choices in her life. She chose her career. She chose her friends, and she also chose to come out in college. Since that time, many women have walked in and out of Robin’s life, but two had left indelible impressions. The first was a crush, and the second…almost destroyed her.
Mentally bruised and battered from an abusive relationship, in one short year, Robin has gone from being a successful author to someone struggling to breathe almost as much as she’s struggling to write. With her confidence shattered, and her self-loathing at an all-time high, when an unexpected inheritance comes her way, Robin doesn’t think twice. At the age of forty-four, Robin Novak packs up her life and her cats and moves to a place where she hopes to start fresh. But a change of location isn’t the only thing Robin is looking for. After her last relationship, she knows this move will also drastically reduce the possibility of ever having another woman in her life.
Choices made create the paths on which we travel. Down some, friendships are born, and down others love is found, and during those journeys, lives change, truths are discovered, secrets are revealed, and high school crushes…can sometimes walk back into your life.

I have been a writer of fan fiction for several years, and the numerous responses that I received during that time from my readers, convinced me to try my hand at self-publishing. Originally from Delaware, I now call Florida my home, and when I'm not writing or working... I'm playing golf.

My genre is lesbian fiction. Although my books are adult-rated for the love scenes they contain, they are not merely erotica. They are romance based, and inside you will find all the things that make a love story a love story. Attraction, distraction, lust, angst, comedy, and of course, sex. :)

Up until 32% I was contemplating not finishing the book! It was the WEIRD and boring for me! And then it started getting weirder but in a very interesting way, and I just couldn’t put it down!
I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but there’s like 4 stories inside the story itself (forgive me for not explaining myself well, I’m trying not to have spoilers here )..
I also have to say that Lyn Gardner writes SO DAMN WELL!
This is a 4.5 rounded up to 5. The reason why I took of some points is because there’s too much historical facts especially the first 32% of the book , but once you get past this, (and a couple of other weird things you will discover), the book becomes addictive!

2 stars. WTF did I just read?

First of all, this is not a romance. There is a little bit of a soul mates/insta love story at the very end of the book and that's it. For the most part, this is a mishmash of random themes loosely tied together in the end. I admit I liked the book at first well enough even with all the historical info-dumping but then nothing ever happens. It was such a slog to continue this book but I did so in hopes of a romance. It never came. I absolutely hate soul mates/insta love themes. And this read is a textbook example of that.

They have no chemistry too since the majority of the book is spent on a 100% one-sided crush descriptions. Most characters are quite one dimensional - either larger than life or unhealthy, ugly, homophobic scumbags. I also didn't enjoy a lot of interactions these characters have - apparently scaring the shit out of each other and a lot of yelling is considered normal on a "it's just a prank, bro!" level.

Meh... I'm off to find a real romance book now.

Lyn Gardner is one of my favourite authors. I loved both Ice and Born out of wedlock.
I didn't love this much as the other books but I enjoyed this one.

Robin is an author and she just inherited 'safe harbour inn' from her late aunt. Robin was in a manipulative and abusive relationship and still bear the mental scars of it. So she decides to keep the Inn and move into the island. She need someone to manage the Inn and decided hire Judy, whom her aunt's friend suggested.
She is also surprised to find that Judy is her high school teacher she had-still have-a crush on. Judy took the job and they start to renovate the place together.
The romance is slowly build. There is an age gap of 10 years between them(44 and 55).

This book is well written. There is revealing of family secrets, some family drama and psychopathic ex-drama . I kind of didn't like the cover because it ruined my imagination. The name Choices suits well, because it shows the fear of coming out and choices made in love and life .

I love books by Lyn Gardner. I like her writing style and the empathy she has for characters. Her characters are not perfect but have their quirks and flaws, which they own. They are not judged by them, but accepted as they are by their counterparts in the novels, friends and other mains. The characters in the books usually communicate well with each other, but sometimes have secrets they don’t open up immediately about.
Up till now I’ve rated all Gardner’s books with 5 stars. This one is a 4 star for me. Though it had all the characteristics of her other books, lovely characters and a good story, it was at some points too longwinded for me. Usually I like the flowery and descriptive language Gardner uses, but this time it was a bit too much for my taste. Still this is a good book that I can recommend to readers that like warm-hearted romance with a little bit of angst.

Phew! The wait for Lyn Gardner's new work was finally over when I got to read her latest work, "Choices," a new romance! Again, she's wowed me with this superbly written and told love story, with a little extra panache this time. Let's just say, it had a certain "mysterious" air of intrigue that flowed with authority whilst amplifying the essence of the main story! I didn't expect it, really, so I was dead chuffed upon realising Gardner's direction to her storytelling. Ohhhhh....ahem...'nuff said! I absolutely loved the feel of it whilst delving into the book that was filled with not just the love story between the two main protagonists, Robin and Judy, but also some very relevant characters who intertwined with each other as secrets were uncovered and revelations unfolded. Talk about multi-dimensional character and story development, indeed! That's just what Gardner once again created for this particular book...and then some!

The prologue itself already had me mesmerised! The long, "one-shot" mysterious scene along with its contents which Gardner slowly unfolded in the beginning was reminiscent of my favourite Virginia Woolf scene in the brilliant movie, "The Hour." I won't divulge any further but when you read this book and if you'd seen the movie, you'll know which one I'm alluding to. And the end of the prologue was simply intoxicating. I was left with a sense of wonder and the need to discover more about what really transpired that led to the event as described. Gardner circled back to the prologue's content at the end of the book in order to complete story which could only be done after all the secrets were revealed and truth illuminated. A perfect motif. I always get chills of excitement and joy when I see writers using motifs - be it in books or films. A motif gives the story a deeper meaning, a symbolic purpose that flows through the physical, emotional and psychological aspects of its characters, moods, subject matters, themes. It creates a solid multi-dimensional structure of the story and character development. How often do we see that form or narrative being utilised in films, let alone books, these days, eh? So, I have Gardner to thank for gifting me this artistic narrative style for my reading experience and pleasure!

Anyway....

I generally like this writer but felt this body of work to be verbose. I like detail to setting a scene and the writer does this well with several history lessons but it felt like the first 40% of the story was just that, and required some patience to power through.

Where this one really falters for me is that she would go into describing something by describing everything it’s not and would do this ad naseum through out the book. This writer does this in her previous books sparingly but it happened so often throughout this one that it sometimes felt patronizing, as if she doesn’t trust my intelligence as a reader to make a connection or understand a concept.

All that being said, It’s not your typical romance but a good story with a few subplots with twist and turns that all come together with good characters.

Some things that you must be prepared for going into a Lyn Gardner book: it will be long (like, really long); she has a fondness for detailed descriptions of architecture and interior design; you will find an overuse of the title smattering the book; you will probably be tempted to leave the book early on and then find it addictive; you will be drawn to one or both the MCs and get invested in them; and finally, when you finish, you will spend time with your favourite parts/scene/characters of the book for a while just lolling around.

Another great Gardner book. A nice journey between the past and present with a slow burn romance. I definitely recommend this book.

This was intense and emotional and confusing if I'm being completely honest.
It was less about the romance itself than some of Gardners other books, but I liked how she weaved the fates of all the characters together in a way that wasn't the most cohesive, as far as structured storytelling goes, but still very captivating.
The slight dose of paranormal didn't hurt even though I'm not particularly fond of ghosts.

This hit me in the feels! I didn't realise a book could have it all until this one. There was suspense, humour, thrills, mystery, history, the importance of family, your chosen family and friendship... above all, there is love and romance. I loved it... and now I'm curious about Mackinac Island itself too.

Robin Novak is a writer who is moving away to start over a new life in a remote location. She is very intelligent, knows what she wants and does her own thing. She is courageous and carries a kind heart wherever she goes. I really like her personality and her strength shows boldly. She is a rational person. When she gets mad, stay out of her way.

Judy Lawton is the other main character. She meets Robin regarding a job proposal. Then they find out they share a past. Judy is sporty and very much her own person. She is the quiet conservatively dressed woman who prefers books over people, yet is mesmerizing at times.

A few secondary characters need to be mentioned. Declan is Robin's best friend. He comes off as sarcastic and harsh. However, Robin likes him and he does have a good soul. He offers good support to Robin and the two of them play off each other verbally.

Rita is Judy's best friend and is very gregarious. When she speaks the whole room knows it. She has a good heart when it comes to Judy and is a good friend. She tries to get Judy to move out of her comfort zone with certain things.

There is a good amount of conflict between Judy and Robin. This added depth to the story as well as some good real-life drama. The dynamics between these two women over certain subjects are very interesting and made me want to know more about them.

There is a healthy amount of flirting in the story which adds sparks. I love how the author shares with us how the relationship grows and deepens before the women get intimate. The sex scenes are a little graphic with a tiny bit of coarse language. Other than that they are electrifying.

Lyn's story has a few touches that are personal to me, including a university where I attended. The biggest surprise is her chosen destination in the story. I have been to this place twice as a child and would like to visit it again. The way it is described made me feel like I was there. Plus she gives a lot of history on the location. This place will draw you in with its enchanting vibe.

A major secret is revealed in the book that will surprise you. It was a bit tearjerking regarding the subject matter but was an essential part of the story. The author did a beautiful job telling it.

I love the paranormal activity in the story. It adds more excitement and mystery to the plot. They even have a name for the culprit. Suddenly the temperature drops and then… You'll have to see the rest in the book. This 'spirit' has an attitude that you must see.

The story is very lengthy and a little slow in the beginning. As it progressed, the pace quickened. There were some parts that could have been tightened up and still told the story, such as the number of digressions. I'd like to mention that some of them do offer great words of wisdom, which hit a home run for me. I am recommending this book for all who loves paranormal and a slow but deep romance.

I got this book a while ago because of Corporate Slave review. I knew it was weird, but good, but when I started reading it I just couldn’t get interested, I kept putting it down and starting a different book, after at least 6 weeks trying I finally couldn’t make myself try anymore, so to the shelf of “unread and probably forgotten” it went.

Now that I’ve been doing almost nothing all day I started to give some books of that shelf another try. So I came and read some reviews to try to get in the mood, but this one was a hard pass. I finished Going on Red by the same author early this week and it was a really entertaining, frustrating, interesting book, I really enjoyed the way the author told me that story, so I naturally got this out of the mental box I’ve put it and tried one more time. I’m glad.

I’m normally not into paranormal stuff. When I was younger It just bored me to tears, but since I’ve been living in a old house that everyone swears is haunted I stay far far away from things that make me start hearing and seeing things. That said, once I got passed that beginning I couldn’t put the book down. I resented my family for wanting to talk to me and socialize, because they kept me away from the book.

It’s a cute story about insta-love that couldn’t be, it could have feel creepy, that student-teacher thing, but the way it was handled made that impossible. There’s a part of the plot about an ex, that truthfully just annoyed me the whole time, and I personally feel gave nothing to the story, but to each their own. The ghost thing was kinda good, but it’s really not my thing. If you like moody beings from the afterlife, this is your book. Now Judy’s family was a thing of beauty, the invasive, overbearing, meddling brothers, preaching about duty and responsibilities gave that realistic touch I was looking for. Rita and Declan are the best, but I would have liked to learn and read more about Gabby and Natalia, also about Maxine, Adele and Robin’s mom, but I get it, It was Robin and Judy story.

So, If you like good love stories that involve minimal drama between the main characters but a lot of stuff happening around them, this book is for you.

Whenever I see a new Lyn Gardner book I automatically hit the buy button. This story didn't disappoint and I can see myself rereading it again in the future. Give Me A Reason is still my all time favorite but this is definitely a good read and great characters.

Excellent!

I loved Choices. What a beautifully written book. This book covers so many topics. Slight age difference between the main characters. One time teacher and student period. Family drama. Then you throw in the little mysteries slinking in around some of the pages. Lyn Gardner writes another wonderful book that will stay on repeat reads list.

She’s done it again.

I was happy to see another book by Lyn Gardner. I enjoy many, many books but I’m fairly stingy with 5 star reviews. After I bought this one, I didn’t read it for a few weeks. I wanted to anticipate reading it for a bit and I also knew that once I started, I wouldn’t stop reading. There was also just a sliver of anxiety that it might not measure up to her previous books. That was an unfounded concern and I loved this one just as much as the others. If you love lesbian fiction, read this book. It is so good. I’m a touch disappointed it’s done. Hmmm, maybe I’ll reread some of her other books....

Choices

I love this author, she is one of my favourites, and her style of writing is abundantly clear in this novel.
Like with all of her works, this is a multifaceted novel, with a depth that brings the people and places to life. However, one of the MC's did stuff that was infuriating and for me it made it more of a 4 * read.

This was ... very confusing for me as a Lyn Gardner book. I absolutely love this author and I am always SO thrilled when she writes a new book. But I just didn't get this one. The story itself I enjoyed, particularly the paranormal aspects of it. What I did not enjoy was that within it were around two dozen essays, and explanations of things that are completely self-explanatory. It's like she told herself she had a number of words to meet, so she filled it with unnecessary explanations and dry essays. Very odd for her. I would have given this 5 stars had it not included that.

I liked but

I typically love this authors book and even though this was a beautiful love story I felt it was too long. They did not really get together until 60% into story. I know some readers extensive backdrops but I guess I don’t. Other than length I otherwise felt this was a beautiful story.

So good worth every syllable.

I have been a fan of Ms. Gardner's since I read "Give Me a Reason." So much passion in her stories and I am always looking for the next. That being said, this story has many elements true friendship, coming out, survival and learning to live again. How does one get through life? We all have our own story this one parallels many aspects of mine and others I have met. I do not write spoilers but I love Isobel and her story.... So maybe there is hope for all. If you want to know what I meant by that you will have to read the book. You will not regret it.

Too long

The best part of this book in my opinion was the last 35-40%. The beginning seemed to drag. As a reader, I don’t mind setting the scenery, but it is the dialogue between the characters that keeps me engaged. I am not sure if I would read another Lyn Gardner book.

A good story but not great. There was too much going on with characters other than the MC's and at times I found myself skipping over sections, that I personally found not relevant to the overall story. Lyn Gardner is a talented writer..."Ice" has been my favorite so far. This book did not sit as well with me as her previous efforts. 3.5 stars

#clap! bravo!
Another job well done!
4.5 star from me!
because "Give Me a Reason" ~ still a best work ever from Lyn Gardner! <3

about the book! to be honest, I'm not fond about abusive relationship, and family drama theme(the usual ex - psychotic-situation + homophobic - bigot family member)
BUT! I have to admit! well written! :) this is another good read from Lyn Gardner! A REAL Page turner! Slow Burn Romance !! always the best !! :D

About Judy ! in the end! after she "Denial" her real feelings for Robin! she finally reveal her real emotion! Wow "#clap again" a good surprise "like a bomb" !! I never see that coming! But at the same time! TOTALLY make sense at some scene!! because I did felt odd about Judy behavior from time to time! Nice job!!

Oh and the teeny-tiny paranormal plot! hehe keep up the good work!! even though is not believable(for me) but I REALLY LOVE IT <3 so hilarious!!! specially at the end!!! lmao!

Thank you Lyn Gardner!! Looking forward to your next book in-future!!
