Nine months after removing the Reaper in the Tree from his throne, Clarence, Wakoba, and Jessi have struggled to adjust back to their normal lives. Ever since he was marked by the Pit, Clarence has been tormented by nightmares. A strange pair of white eyes haunt his dreams and an icy grip still lingers where the Pit touched him.
With the return of color, the tensions between mortals and reapers increased. The need for the unpleasant guardians of Ganedyn has diminished. Now that the End was trapped in the in-between, the right to enter Ganedyn has become a blessing once more.
Secrets Are For Flowers is the second book in the Beds Are For Flowers series and continues the discussion of nature and preservation held in the first book. This second installment also dives deeper into the history and allegiances of the reapers and explores a morally ambiguous landscape.
When I started Beds Are For Flowers I had no idea it was going to be a series. I wanted to write a pure adventure story. Three children follow a road and when they reach the end they face their main conflict.
I thought that was the beginning and end of it. I wrote a cute middle-grade fantasy that would go in my portfolio and maybe sell a few copies. I had no idea it would climb the hot new release charts and sell over 150 copies in the first two days. For the first time in my life I felt like a real author--I felt like this is something I could actually make a living from.
The funny thing is, any book you write hs the opportunity to be a series. If you can complete a book then the working universe is already there for you to expand upon.
The story of Clarence, Wakoba, and Jessi was only getting started and I knew I had to tell it.
I received an ARC of this from the author for an honest review. What a great follow up to the first book 😍 Such an enchanting world, fun relatable characters, understandable villians all amongst a fascinating journey. More in depth review to come in the very near future (aka when I get my thoughts sorted well enough to write out :))
Summary: In a world ruled by the lingering presence of reapers. Clarence, wakoba, and Jessi come back together to see what changes their world will have to adjust to now that color is back. In the first book we followed the trio in constant adventure and a friendship that made each character emotionally relatable. But with the way things were left in book one. We now see the characters deal with the after math, as well as new discoveries and threats. Will this friendship stand to be as understanding as book one? And are there any reapers on their side or will they have to put up a fight with each they encounter. Beds are for flowers dives into the effects of a nerve wrecking adventure, testing morals, friendships, and the world as they know it.
Firstly I want to say RK I’m proud of you for writing this. It’s always so interesting to me to see people I know (no matter how close we are or just associated with each other) write, and how their brain works. In book one I was surprised by how much I loved it lol. I thought it would be quick and memorable, but I fell for the characters, the setting, the plot, and just the images that popped up in my head as I scrolled through each page. In book two it was hard for me to enjoy because I really loved the friendship aspect. They way Clarence, jessi and wakoba bounced off of each other and understood and communicated with one another felt .. lost? to me in this book sadly. Clarence was really aggravating me I wanted to shake him but also talk to him and understand what he was doing and why and why he wouldn’t communicate with the other characters. The dynamic of the friendship and the way they handled each issue set before them was my favorite part. No ones feelings were over looked everyone listened to one another and it made the experience more enjoyable. In this book it felt all over the place. I wanted to root for them all but their characteristics felt really off to me. They didn’t feel like the same characters. The world was still interesting to me with plenty of new monsters and reapers added in but I wanted a better structure of it all. I feel like this book had what it needed, but it needed to be a little more thought out. If the series is continuing I’m excited to pick up the next book and see what they’ll be up to.
Engaging fantasy follow up to Beds Are for Flowers. A uniquely original series!
It has been nine months since color returned to the world. The Red Reaper sacrificed himself to the End. The Reaper in the Tree is with him, having finally been removed from the Tree and unblocking the way to Ganedyn. Souls can again reach paradise.
Most people are already taking the restored world for granted. Clarence should be relieved. He escaped the End, but he still feels the End’s touch in his palm. He is having nightmares. Is the End really not a threat to his world any longer as most believe?
Clarence and Wakoba have been given the responsibility of caring for the Neighbor’s garden. The Neighbor has returned to being a true reaper. And Clarence is sure he is keeping something important from him.
Clarence and Jesse’s mother has traded far too many of her years just to keep their father alive for a few more days. Now that the Tree has been cleared, how long will it be before a reaper comes for her? Jesse is angry. She has quit going to school and works wherever she can. Soon she may be the only one there to care for herself and her brother.
Didn't love it as much as the first book Beds Are For Flowers which I gave a 5-star rating. I was surprised there even was a second book because the story seemed to be completed. I really was disappointed that this one wasn't even finished properly and there will be another. The story just seemed to lead nowhere and I started to get really confused because everything was so unfocused and I had no idea what was happening (if anything was happening at all).
Also, Wakoba and Clarence started to annoy me a lot, their behavior being a bit like Ron & Harry when they are fighting (or not talking to one another).
I still think the idea of the book is a good one, it just seemed not to be very well thought out.
First I want to say, that I still really enjoy reading about this world that R.K Gold has created, but if I have to be honest, the second book in series was not, in my opinion, as good as the first one. The reasons being this:
What I really liked about the first one, was how R.K Gold used colours. I love art, so colours used in a way like in the first book fascinated me. We still get that in this one, but not as much. I also felt a stronger connection to some of the characters in the first one. Although we do get to know Jessi a lot more in this one which I love! She is badass! I felt that this book still lacked scenes with Wakoba, I am never gonna stop saying that, because I think Wakoba is adorable and he deserves more time, but I have a feeling that we will get that in the third one so I am really excited! continuing on with the characters, I found that I mixed them a lot in this book, we were introduced to a lot of new and exciting characters, but for some reason, I kept forgetting who was who, which made it difficult to focus on the plot.
The beginning of the book was a really nice and smooth transition from the first one, and the ending was epic and hinted to more Wakoba in the future. The middle of the book got a little messy and confusing to me, but that might be that I took a break from reading the book due to the fact that I had other things I had to read for uni first.
Overall, this was good, R.K Gold is a good writer, and I am excited to see what he brings to us in the next book in the series.
