The slow burn of the MELT bacteria begins to accelerate as Bill and Alice relive memories of their past lives while struggling for every next breath. At the cabin, new faces turn sinister - or so it seems - and survival skills are tested to their breaking point.... A new, intensely thrilling series, MELT has received unanimous praise from beta readers and early reviewers alike. Written by Kate Pickford and Mike Kraus, MELT examines a part of our world that we often take for granted. Add in a dash of real science and a glimpse of what the future might hold in store and you're presented with the recipe for a frightenly real post-apocalyptic thriller. MELT is a novel-length series will be released on a monthly basis.
I struggled as to what to make of this book. The constant flashbacks and fugues of Alice and Bill were so extensive and distracting that nothing of consequence happened with them until the last 90% of the book. It was like watching a movie or TV show that was nothing but flashbacks. There was a little more action on the home front with Jo and an unexpected guest to the cabin, but even that bogged down with her pervasive secretive suspicions and skills. Even then, she was pretty inept at covering up a killing. Book 1 started with the very interesting premise of a technology designed to destroy our plastic trash has gone wrong and now plastic everywhere puts us at great risk. Book 2 and 3 have mostly abandoned what could be a great plot mechanism where we are battling all of the large and small amounts of plastic that pervade our lives. Instead, it has mired down in the past lives of some of the characters and the unique story line is submerged. At this point, my favorite character is the fairly odd subway lady Barb. I may read book 4 to see what happens to her or maybe not.
This book did more jumping between the adult characters. Multiple cliff hangers...struggled with the total recall of their past...perhaps I am just inpatient
I can't get over how great this story is! Just as I finish one book, hoping it's at least as good as the last, I'm undone! They just keep getting better! Alice's backstory is heart wrenching. Bill's love for his wife and family has no end! And Michael, who knew!?
This book would of been better if there wasn't so many back stories. Alice, Jo and Bill are all in tough situations, and during them you bounce back to back stories when you just want to see them get out of the trouble . Also, too many bad things happening one right after another. A bit excessive in my book. I'm hoping book 4 will be different.
Book one and two were great 👍 five stars each. The first half of this book was tedious, jumping all over the place. Kind of meandering with many different threads. The last half was back on track. Can't wait for the next book hoping it will be more like the first two.
I enjoyed it BUT it had too many flashbacks for the mother and father and they were lengthy which all you wanted is really to find out what was going to happening in present day. Need to have flashbacks all at once. I fell asleep and then had to turn to where I wanted it to be in the present.
Skimmed a bunch of places. Reminiscing the past unrelated to the story took away from the storyline. In fact t over 75% of the book was not related to what was happening. I was bored. Will NOT be reading Book 4. Yawn.
I loved the first two books, but this was so detailed, long winded, and convoluted that I skipped pages . I still love the premise of the book and will read the next one to tie it up for me, I hope.
This one? Not so much. New characters introduced who really have nothing to do with the story. Flashbacks equally as non-important. I found myself skipping huge swaths of the pages that I just didn’t care about, and didn’t really need to read to keep up with the story. That said, I do enjoy the writing of Mike Kraus. But I’d like my money back on the third book because I spent maybe a half hour with it. Should’ve kept it to just two books, Mike, or kept the storyline at the heart of the book going.
Don't get me wrong, the author is definitely capable, but you've drawn this whole thing out to such a degree that the story became ultra boring. The premise of the story started out good and would definitely hold my interest as such, but this dragging out of their history is just too much. You've torn your characters in to bits and pieces and while all humans are flawed so you're looking for imperfections, yours are psychologically incapable humans. What will you do next to disgust us with them?
Now I have to wait for book 4. Darn it.. it's intriguing and a bit different to other books. Can't wait to find out who the traitor is and if Alice bill and Paul make it back to the cabin
MELT has gotten totally out of control and Manhattan is in danger of sinking. Alice is trapped, Bill is searching for her and there's a shootout at their mountain home. There's a good bit of backstory given, much of which relates to what happened at their home.
Alice, Bill and others need to get off the island before it sinks. One additional problem for them, though, is that jets seem to have begun a bombing mission on the island.
This one is gruesome in parts and it tends to jump a lot between the present and the Alice's past and Bill's past.
JJP/MK have penned the third SYFY novel in the Melt series. In the third volume we find three people still alive trying to find each other and escape at the same time. The lady is helping others to escape. The man had had to do something he never thought he would. He lost his hand. The son teamed up with a fireman and found out escaping was not going to be easy. A spy is found in the KP personnel files. This s an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
This is one of the best series of books I’ve ever read. The characters are so vivid and full of effervescence that really brings things to life. The story flows in a way that keeps your attention and apart from one short section in the middle I was so hooked I couldn’t put it down. I’ve even bought the audio versions of the books so far as they’re read extremely well by Chris Abernathy and I love audio versions of books I’ve read to hear the readers incantation of the book compared to my own. Brilliant book a must read for apocalyptic lovers
The third book is even worse than the second. And it was hard to believe that it could be possible.
19% into the book and all we got from the actual present story I can sum up in 3 sentences. Everything else is again taking place in their minds. About past memories and incidents. Nothing that contributes remotely to the story at hand. Making the characters look like idiots.
Book 3 is focused on the parents, Bill and Alice. We get their backstory and discover what made Alice the way she is. This story vacillates between these two as they try to navigate Manhattan, above and below ground.
SPOILER: Alice's background is very dark, so people who may be triggered from sexual and physical abuse may want to consider that before reading.

Unlike the vast majority of Mike’s books this one is equal parts semi-apocalypse and phycological adventure. Their style of letting us into the ongoing thoughts both present and past is artfully woven into the growing destructive story of MELT. Well done! Ready for book 4!
The descriptions of Guatemala were irritatingly inaccurate. There are no palm trees in the area they were supposed to be in. No buildings in Guatemala have carpeting. No one refers to Antigua as "Antigua City." Other than that, there was enough suspense and an unexpected twist or two. I will be reading the next installment.
Pike has an awesome way of back filling the characters that solidify their quirks. Different people and their experiences, are very well developed within this series.
After a nap, I'm prepared for another run. This series captivates you and leaves you needing more information. What's next? How is this happening? Book 4 here I come!
