The different approaches Hinata, Kamomedai's short player, and the former Little Giant all take to being "short" are fascinating and really speak to their attitudes towards the game and competition in general. Though of course the real highlight of this volume is Tsukki vehemently denying that he's anything like Hinata.
This counts as my review for the whole Haikyuu!! manga
”You don’t win alone. That’s just how it is.”
READ FOR: best character developments and themes that I have ever encountered READING LEVEL: Level 1-3 out of 5
*All of my reviews are as spoiler-free as possible unless stated otherwise*
I don’t think I’ll ever have enough words to express how much I love this manga and anime series but I’ll try anyway. But I just need to make it known that this has changed my view in anime and manga forever. I caught up with this manga in the last 30 or so chapters but I won’t say much to avoid spoilers... but it was crazy.
It made me laugh, cry, fall in love, think, and honestly... what else do you need in a series? I can keep going on and on about this series but honestly I think you should just read it for yourself. I really don't think you'll regret it.
When someone asks me what the plot is, honestly, all I can say is “they play volleyball” HAHAHA… but it’s so much more than that.
PLOT: ★★★★★ The plot was so well thought of from the very beginning and when I re-read the manga I can’t believe the amount of foreshadowing Furudate actually placed. My mind was so blown… I just. No words. I am seriously in love.
ART STYLE: ★★★★★ The art style… *chef’s kiss* especially in the later arcs. There were so many matches but even then Furudate never failed to leave me breathless at each one.
CHARACTERS: ★★★★★ The character development here is THE BEST. HANDS DOWN. that I have ever come across. I fell in love with the so many characters in this series that I did not even think that was possible.
The character relationships... the character dynamics... their mindsets... they are all so perfectly well done and realistic GAHHHH I've said this so many time throughout this review BUT THEY JUST MADE ME FALL IN LOVE SO EASILY. I can't pick my favourite one but hinata and kageyama just hold a special place in my heart.
This connects to the themes but my favourite thing that was done with the characters here was that each one of them embodied a theme or a message that the author wanted to get across. Those are spoilers so I won’t really talk about it but just know that it was one of the main reasons that made me go so crazy about this series.
*cough* hinata kageyama atsumu sakusa bokuto kita noya ushijima tendou tsukki suga kenma kuroo *cough* +++
Note: if you think this series is focused on only 1 team... you're in it for A RIDEEEEEE
I'm getting chills just looking at and remembering these panels ^^
THEMES: ★★★★★ Honestly I basically thought the themes were just gonna be “teamwork” and “friendship”… while it is all that, Furudate sensei was able to make it even deeper. And the symbolisms? You are not ready.
I think the one that was focused on the most was “It’s not always about winning, it’s about growth”. But there were also so many smaller things that lead up to that bigger point: (1) we get our strength from others, (2) but you also need to make yourself dependable, (3) there is always room for improvement, (4) working hard is good but overworking yourself isn’t, (5) you are built on the small things you do everyday, (6) an ace's back should be an inspiration to your teammates (hi bokuto), (7)+++
The way I wrote it was very straight to the point but I was amazed at how Furudate tackled the so many messages that I received from this series.
PACING: ★★★★★ THE TIMING. OF EVERYTHING. JUST MAKES SENSE.
It’s so realistic that I want to cry. (I actually already did… a lot of times.)
PAGE TURNER: ★★★★★
You should understand that I made this review weeks after I finally calmed down about this series cuz I was really going crazy about it HAHAHA if you have finished this series too or met me while I was reading this, you know what I’m talking about ;)
I'll keep this series close to my heart until the grave. You cannot convince me otherwise.
So, I enjoyed this volume (I mean, I haven't come across a volume of Haikyu that I didn't enjoy), but it wasn't very memorable. I guess, aside from Korai, Kamomedai's team isn't that interesting to me. We'll see if things pick up during the rest of their match. Until then, I don't have much to say except...go, Karasuno!
Favorite moments:
-Kenma's impression of Tsukki. -Korai's flashback with his mom. 😊 -Suga: "You sound just like Hinata!" -Tsukki: "Ugggh..."
I cannot ever have enough of this series. I love each volume, and I know that it ends in either 5 or 6 volumes. I'm ready for the end, but sad. PLEASE READ THIS SERIES IF YOU AREN'T!!!
I KNEW IT! I called it in my video I'm posting tomorrow on YouTube and glad that I really didn't say the character's name because I just knew it!
I knew I was not going to keep super disliking Hoshiumi. ;P
And yep, this volume just confirmed that truth because yeah, I don't super dislike him anymore. ;P
He is still not my favorite character by any means, but like what Furudate has done with almost ALL the teams and players, he really knows how to make his readers think twice on if they dislike a character. It's happened with Ushijima and now with Hoshiumi.
I think being able to see Hoshiumi's backstory makes him more compelling. I would not say he has my "sympathies" (I can hear him yelling at me already if I said that LOL), but more of an understanding of why he is so passionate and has given his all to being great at EVERY position. He's a really interesting character!
Speaking of characters I also disliked before but totally love now…Tsukki. I never thought I would say that I EVER liked him, but man, he is an AWESOME character! I really really really have become Team Tsukki since we first met him in the beginning. (The way he made Kageyama have THAT face was absolutely hilarious in this volume!)
However, when it comes to sympathies, Asahi has them in spades right now! Do NOT break our Ace!!! (I'm surprised Daichi said what he did and right there with Suga of why didn't you just keep that statement inside! LOL!)
Seeing commentary by The Little Giant has been AMAZING!! I didn't know it was something I needed until I read this volume, but man, I want more of it! He is a hoot! And also super cool!
Two small things I really loved in this one is Date Tech's commentary and Sensei complimenting Coach. <3
My favorite thing of all though? Getting that dose of happiness and satisfaction of Hinata helping lead the way to victory! I can't help but pump a fist in the air with him scoring and making "holes"!
4 1/2 SMOL HOSHIUMI KSIEJENDJSKWDJDE THIS IS THE BIRBEST BABY BIRB I’VE EVER SEEN
not udai being fun ASF we love former vball goofbois
Ooh. That Felt Good. RealGood. G O O DY MCGOODERS thefuck no really bessho please be kidding me are you also a fukunaga. folks i think we have discovered another individual of this rare species
wow i’ll literally never get tired of suga curb-stomping tsukki with his maternal love & companionship including but not limited to psychologically breaking him down by stoking his worst fears the foremost of which is hinata
the staggering number of babies from dateko is getting unfair at this point also futakuchi sakunami & aone own my life it’s absolutely no problem
okay everyone get ready for me to say this: deep down all aces are softies & all MBs (excluding yams & hinata but they aren’t primarily blockers anw) are bitches. i’m 98% convinced my hypothesis is correct. like for example, right, hirugami is definitely psychotic
Kainis.

Hey, Korai? Yeah, there probably isn't any way to make yourself taller, but didja know? There are lots of ways to make yourself better. - Hoshiumi Asa (Korai's mom)
i've already shelved the first volume to indicate that i have read the whole series but now i'm shelving this one for hoshiumi only <3 my baby!! i love him sm istg
Riusciranno i nostri eroi a batterlo?
I'm getting Asahi and Kei regression arc whiffs from this volume. Let's see how those will turn out!
Korai's backstory was also incredibly precious and made me understand why volleyball is so important to him in a different way from Hinata. He found a way to use his height to make himself stronger, even if he won't be seen that way by the rest of the world. It's kind of sad.
