An Atlanta-area native, Laura Carter graduated with distinction in English literature from Georgia State University, from which she also received her MFA in Poetry in 2007. She has published seven chapbooks, the most recent of which is Dear Angelou (WonderRoot/Loose Change, 2016). Her eighth chapbook is forthcoming from Dancing Girl Press in 2017, and is called After New Ambiance. Recent poetry has appeared or will appear in journals like The South Dakota Review, The Hat, Loose Change, New South, TYPO, Whiskey Island, Deer Bear Wolf, The Kenyon Review, and Hambone. Her many book reviews are online, primarily at The Fanzine, and have appeared in Jacket2, H_NGM_N, and The Atticus Review, among others. She has read her poetry in various reading series in Atlanta, as well as in such places as Chicago, New York, Athens, Georgia, and Durham, North Carolina. Laura has also been an active curator in the Atlanta poetry scene, hosting series such as Sunday Evening Chill, Vida Voce (which featured women writers), and Sun & Moon, and helping to organize the Atlanta chapter of 100,000 Poets for Change. Her book manuscript, What the Sun Thought, has been a finalist in both the Noemi Press and Coconut Books contests. She has served as a poetry editor for magazines like Terminus, Five Points, Loose Change (as part of a poetry residency at WonderRoot), and Stranger Than, and she has taught English and creative writing on the college level for over fourteen years. Laura maintains strong interest in social and critical theory, which she always immerses herself in when she has the time. She lives on the east side of Atlanta with her two cats, Sasha and Sonya.
