A well written and very informative book written for middle graders on the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.

My twins and I enjoyed this nonfiction book about Martin Luther King, Jr. There was a nice blend of pictures, narrative story telling and inserts highlighting other events taking place during the same time.

I’d highly recommend this series of history books for kids. They read more like fiction books than nonfiction, and hold a wealth of information in such a short book.

This book was a great follow-up to Who Was Rosa Parks? , we learned more about a lot of the new words we read there; segregation, nonviolence, equality, protest, etc.

We were surprised to find out that when Martin was born his given name was Michael King.

Martin was impressed by the teachings of Gandhi, and when he visited India he saw first-hand the power and effectiveness of peaceful protest. Even though it is difficult, he understood how important it was to not fight back when you are treated unfairly. Lily says “I think it was cool that Martin's hero was Gandhi”.

We learned about many great events and heroes of the civil rights movement. We were impressed by the courage of the Freedom Riders and lunch counter protestors. We are inspired by people- black and white- who lost their life in the movement: Medgar Evers, Andrew Goodman, Mickey Schwerner, James Chaney, and others. We had an amazingly deep (especially for a 6 year old) discussion of the differences between the approaches of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X.

Lily really liked the Brown v. Board of Education decision by the Supreme Court. “kids should be able to go to the school that is best for them”. She especially liked that brave children (as young as 6) participated in demonstrations in Birmingham, Alabama- some even went to jail! Jim Crow laws were ended because of the efforts of many people over a long period of time.

We were sad to read of the circumstances of his death, but Lily was happy and proud that Martin was willing to reach out and help so many people, including the garbage workers of Memphis, Tennessee.

The book was really good but it was also violent because of all the things that happened. The white people made the Black people stand in the bus for a long time. People were injured and killed. I like reading books like this, but I also don't. It's hard to explain. I learned a lot from this book.

Read aloud to the kids for History. Good for elementary age kids. Very informative without being too graphic. It's a tough balance to know what and how to teach them at this age. L kept exclaiming "This book is terrible!" and we needed to stop again and talk through the events.

This is a great, simple story that explains who Martin Luther King, Jr is.

"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was only 25 when he helped organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott and was soon organizing black people across the country in support of the right to vote, desegregation, and other basic civil rights.
Maintaining nonviolent and peaceful tactics even when his life was threatened, King was also an advocate for the poor and spoke out against racial and economic injustice until his death from an assassin's bullet in 1968."

This was one of the best non fiction books I have ever read! I NEVER EVER read non fiction books, but since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was here, I decided to read about him and get to know who this great man was. This book was an excellent biography on Martin Luther King Jr. as it explained many sophisticated ideas and views in such a simple manner that kids of all ages could understand it. I was prepared to be loaded with chapters of information about this man, and I was ready for all the confusion that came along with that. Surprisingly, i understood his life perfectly and was educated about so much in such a short amount of pages and chapters! The author fit Martin Luther King Jr.'s entire life in only 112 pages...all his accomplishments, achievements, and all that great stuff he did for us. I loved the author's writing style as it was fun and playful yet informative, I learned a lot from this book. The book, obviously, wasn't like a story so I can't really critique this on the plot, but overall this method the author used to convey her information was very fun to read...And even though you might not realise it, you are actually learning a lot about the life of a great man in our history.
I suggest this book to people who love to read biographies, auto-biographies, nonfiction, and other genres similar to these. Even though you are like me and never in your entire life pick up a nonfiction book, I promise you, after reading this book you will enjoy reading nonfiction!!!

This is in an insightful, but not simple book that talks about the life of of one the most important people of our times. I appreciated the depth of the life being discussed and reported on while giving information that was true and historical- but in a way that made for quick reading and understanding. Page 7 is a perfect example of the kind of writing that this easy to read but not short novel was written with. " These rules were called Jim Crow laws. They made Martin very angry."
While reading this, I got an even better understanding of the impact and the dedication that MLK had and now has, still, in 2017. I would recommend this book based on reading level and age group and maturity- as I feel there are better books depending on age group, but as for a starter biography- I really enjoyed.

I absolutely adore this series! I love everything about these "Who was" books. The first book I read from this series was "Who was Harriet Tubman?" And it ignited a love for history books and also historical fiction. Martin Luther King Jr., is someone I truly admire because of his civil rights contributions and also because of his faith. This book brings up his faith in way that respects it and also incorporates into the life of young Martin and as a minister. It's brings up issues on slavery, discrimination, and racism. It would be a great book to read to students during a civil rights movement unit and even for fun as a read-aloud. Introducing this book could also lead kids I read more of this series.

A beautiful children book, filled with content and insightful story (as it is always insightful to read about this great man). Yet, I found a type of misinformation in the very first page of chapter 10, where it is stated that Black Panther Party were followers of Malcolm X, which I find not to be true for the fact that the founder of the party mentioned in his autobiography that Malcolm X actually had a huge influence on the philosophy of the party, which means that it was them holding to an idea that Malcolm later in his life got away with it, and he didnt state that they were following what Malcolm thought. so how can they be his followers?

This is a biography that makes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. seem even more genuine and wholesome than even than the most meaningful person in your life. At the beginning, Dr. King’s life and childhood is described in the first two chapters. His father was a minister and his mother was a well-spirited and kind-hearted mother of three. Dr. King went to college for many years and met his wife, Coretta, while earning his doctorate degree at Boston University. One of Dr. King’s first big moments in history was the Montgomery bus boycott. He then participated in the 1960’s lunch counter sit-ins and was arrested, along with two-hundred others for his participation. Dr. King continued his advocacy for equal rights in leading the Birmingham protests and marches. Throughout it all, Dr. King made one thing clear: all protests and ways that people disobeyed unjust laws were to be kept peaceful. The protests grew across the country. Dr. King planned a march to Washington D.C. where he gave his infamous, “I have a dream speech.” Protest after protest. Dr. King kept leading peaceful protests in various locations. The text does not end with Dr. King’s death. Instead, words are thoughtfully stringed together to describe the events that occurred after Dr. King, and even how his legacy continues today. This biography would be best suited for 3rd and 4th grade students.
This book could be used in 3rd grade instruction. It relates well to 3.H.2.1Explain change over time through historical narratives (events, people and places). It would be a great resource to build on social studies curriculum. I might use this book in my future classroom as an exemplar of a biography. In ELM 460, we have discussed the importance of providing our with students rich, high-quality biographies and autobiographies before we ask our students to write them. Students could then pair with another student in the class and write biographies of one another, based on what they tell and learn from each other.
This text could also be used to provide students with some background knowledge of the civil rights movement. Therefore, this text could supplement the 3rd grade standard 3.H.1.1 Explain key historical events that occurred in the local community and regions over time. The lesson could be extended to have students write and perform speeches about things they both can research and are passionate about. The text, used for this purpose, could be used to help students understand how they might use research and their own passions to create a persuasive speech.
This book was a WOW book because it not only touched on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, but it also tied in his inspirations, the historical events that surrounded his life, his hard work and aspirations, and the legacy his life continues to have on the world. Before reading, I expected the book to simply cover his life. When I began to read the small biographies included in the text, I became more engaged and was provided with the necessary background knowledge to gain a deeper understanding of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. I also loved the excerpts of the historical events that surrounded his life, like the Jim Crow laws, the confederacy, and Brown vs. Board of Education.
This book was an e-text.

The book Who Was Martin Luther King Jr?, by Bonnie Bader was a great inspiring biography of Martin Luther King Jr. It gives you such amazing backstory of Martin’s childhood and all of his matches for freedom, and to end segregation. It adds great detail to many great, inspiring acts he has done, such as when he had a march in Washington D.C which had more than 250,000 people beside him. Even though many people were thrown into jail, killed, and beat it is very inspiring. We/Me honor those brave people who stood up for their rights. This story gave me lots of important information for me to know about Martin Luther King Jr. If you like any types of biographies on many types of people then I suggest that you check out The Who Was series.

This book is about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the struggles he had to go through as being a African American in the south. The book also talks about how he was a civil right activist and how he fought to be equal, one of thing I like about the story is when there was a little moment for when Martin was a kid and basically his dad took him a get a pair of shoes and the store was empty but the store keeper who was caucasian asked Martin and his father to wait in the back of the store. Martin's birth name was Michael but at the age of five Michael's father decided to change both of there name to Martin. Martin didn't believe in physical fight he believed in a peaceful fight. Martin dedicated his life to fighting for equal rights and even though he didn't live to see the day when we all became equal he left a wonderful mark in history.

Which do you choose a better place to have priority over own life or a worse place to help poor people?
A). I would take first one. I could not decide like Martin Luther King, Jr in those turning point.

1.If you were discriminated because of segregation, what would you do? Like Jr, could you fight with white people with nonviolence?
A.To be honest, I couldn't decide it. But, in order to live in the world, I would fight with people who want to get the human right together.
2.If you were one of the white people(I mean you weren't discriminated by someone), would you discriminate between black people and white ones?
A.Maybe, I'd join forces with people who discriminate black people because I'd be afraid of the leaders... I'm shameful;-(
But, if possible, I'd help black people and would like to join march to lose the discrimination between black and white.

I really respect Martin Luther King,Jr.
Especially the power of doing actions and speech by himself(of course, including others' powers). Maybe, I'll not be able to become like this personality. But, I want to be a teacher who can affect anything to children!
The way is different from him. But, I long for his action, speech, and the way of thinking.

Personal Reaction: I really enjoyed this book! It has amazing illustrations and an great insight into the man that Martin Luther King Jr. was and it shares that is a way that young students can understand. I think that is what makes this book special, it takes a great historical figure who has done amazing things for equality, and translates it in a way that young people can understand.

Purpose/Use in Classroom: This book would be a great read aloud for students in the 2nd-3rd grades. It would be great to use on a history unit about civil rights, segregation, and inequality. It could also be used for a biography project on prominent historical figures. This book could be used to discuss the differences between fiction and non-fiction and introducing biographies into a literature curriculum for young students. This book could be used as non-fiction because it tells the readers who Martin Luther King Jr. was and the difference he made throughout history. This could also be used during Black History month on a lesson in prominent African Americans throughout history, and it could be used for independent reading for young students who are interested in historical figures.

3.-7 words summary ; minister - White - Colored - segregation - Gandhi - march - dream
4.-Have you ever been to a church? How was that?
Actually, I have not been there so I want to know what has been doing. However I have been to some temples. I folded my legs under myself for a long time and listen to a Buddhist holy text.
It was hard experience for younger myself sitting like that but holding a memorial service for ancestors is significant.
5.- I did not know the person who said the words "I have a dream". But after reading this book, I finally recognized that the person who said the words is Martin Luther King, Jr. ! I will remember his name in my life because he eagerly helped Black people by leading the peaceful protest even he was often arrested in a jail. Also I was interested in Mahatma Gandhi because Martin also had the thought that change comes from peaceful protest, so next time I want to read something about him.

Martin Luther King was really good person who changed the civil rights of New York. He was marching at all over the world with black people and convincing them to help him out by changing civil rights or called the Jim Crow laws in the past. When Martin was a kid The Jim Crow laws bothered him a lot. Martin thought that these laws were unfair and they he had to change it. As a grown man Martin was sent to jail a lot of times because of the Marching around the world. This didn't stop Martin no matter how many times he was sent to jail he still decided to continue marching. Martin was married and he had four children he went to different places this family like Alabama. After the Jim Crow laws were changed Martin felt terrific before they were changed he made his I have a dream speech The Lincoln Memorial. After everything Mark and went outside for some fresh air and he was shot and he died. In family carried out his experience and continued for what he did to change the world this is Martin Luther King.

Who Was Martin Luther King Jr.? by Bonnie Bader: Who do you think Martin Luther King, Jr. was? He was a fantastic civil rights leader who believed segregation was wrong. He led in many marches and never gave up! When Martin was little, his father took him in to a store to buy him some new shoes, even though the store was empty the white store owner made them sit in the back. Living in the south was very hard for blacks, back then they were treated horribly and always had to wait for the whites to be served first. As Martin led in marches he was thrown in jail along with many other people participating in the marches, but this didn't stop him. He was able to change an abundance of the Jim Crow laws. As Martin continued to succeed he gave many inspiring speeches Often using the phrase, "I have a dream" a dream that blacks and whites could live in peace. This is an amazing book with an amazing man!

When children are younger sometimes they aren’t always exposed to historical figures. It is important however for young kids to learn about people who have impacted history and what they have accomplished. A great way for this to occur is to have children read biographies. There are authors who have written books about famous people and what they have done. In the biography “Who was Martin Luther King” by Jess Brailer, Martin Luther King's life is explored. There are funny and interesting facts and well as facts about his achievements. This book is a great way to expose young children to the wonderful life he lived. I also loved the different literary elements I saw in the story. The entertaining pictures as well as the simple text really aloud me to connect with the story. I would absolutely recommend this book for all young, mature readers.

I enjoyed this book and think its a great children's book. It is easy for children to be able to read and understand this story. This is something I think is essential for children to know and be able to understand about history. I like that the illustrations were in black and white because then it didn't take too much away from the story. I would recommend this book to kids around age 10.
This is the story of Martin Luther King Jr, his life and contribution to the world. It is a story that everyone should know. To have a book that children can read and comprehend that is as important as this is fantastic. It discusses everything from the civil rights movement, freedom riders, and Brown v. Board of education to his death.
