Emilia Stark never thought she'd become a celebrity by editing books, but she also never thought she'd be using magic to do it. Her clients' success, coupled with her own mysterious nature, have brought her nationwide attention as well as a waiting list that has some hopeful authors waiting years. Despite her fame, her methods are kept safe by the curious fact that every writer who has tried to expose her secret to the world has found themselves suddenly unable to speak.
Outside her work, Emilia's biggest challenge is putting herself through school, where she gets into frequent arguments with the fictional characters in her reading assignments. She also struggles to manage her relationship with her opinionated former tutor, a man named Alexander Fox whose constant experimenting with magic trapped him forever inside a college-ruled notebook.
Emilia's fame has brought her adversaries, most of whom are determined to figure out her secret at all costs, and most of whom she completely ignores. But when other people with magical abilities start disappearing around the world and threatening notes start appearing on her doorstep, Emilia begins to worry — especially once she realizes she is the final target.
Having read some of Kay Solo's earlier works I was looking forward to this book and it did not disappoint. The story is well written, with relatable, diverse, well-developed characters. The plot and pacing are fantastic and the dialog is wonderful. I won't go into details to avoid spoilers, but the depiction of some of the protagonist's problems is stellar.
The mystery plotline is gripping and challenging, but the clues are there to solve it, which is always better than a Deus Ex Machina plot twist resulting in a villain we've never been introduced to prior to the unmasking. None of that here at all! While I'd figured out most of the twist before the reveal, I hadn't figured out the mechanics, so it was still a very satisfying read! That doesn't happen very often, frankly.
This was a really fun and intense book! I wasn't expecting it but it turned into kind of a mystery with people disappearing and everyone trying to figure out who's doing it, and I did NOT expect the reveal. I feel like I should have but it took me by surprise. I also liked Emilia more than I thought I would, and the descriptions of her experiences and all the friendship drama and everything else were so good! It was a lot more exciting and fast paced than I thought a book about editing would be but the magic and the mystery were neat, and her magic is SO COOL.
This isn't exactly spoilers I think, but I love the little hints that every book Kay Solo ever writes is in the same universe somehow. There are TDS references in every single book and David shows up in every one somehow and I love this LOL.
