Lucia is playing a dangerous game in her quest to gain revenge/justice against a man who had no qualms in trying to kill her as a child, and when she meets Silas she finds her focus wavering and someone she can finally trust.
The chemistry between Lucia and Silas, didn’t really sizzle for me, I liked how protective Silas was of Lucia, but their relationship/attraction wasn’t one that drew me in.
I liked/enjoyed the last few chapters far more than the first part of the book, but overall this is one book in the series I know I shall not be re-reading.
Lucia de Feria seeks to expose the villainous earl who once tried to kill her and steal her inheritance. She can't allow anyone to get close to her because she knows they'll be ruined along with her when her big secret comes out. She's certain even her friends among the Peculiar Ladies Book Club will abandon her when they learn who she is and what she is.
However, Viscount Cavendish is not so easily deterred. He senses she's in trouble, and he won't give up trying to court her or help her.
This was another entertaining read in the Girls Who Dare series. I loved the characters and the writing. At about 50%, this story started to drag for me, but it picked up at 67%. Overall, It's a solid 4-star read and one I recommend.
I would have enjoyed it more if I liked Lucia as a character, but I see no character development, only revelation of some secrets from the past but she stays the same the whole time ://
The more I read this series, the more I enjoy it. I was a bit afraid about this one book as revenge plots are far from my favorite trope. It usually only brings hurt and pain in its wake. But Mrs Leech was able to mix each ingredient at the right dose from anger, fear and pain. Lucia is there to retrieve what was stolen from her and for this, she sets a payback campaign on the man responsible for her loss. Because of her past encounters with men, she is weary of them. She knows she can’t trust nor love them. Until a very unpolished lord shows her, some men are more than their rough facade. Silas Anson has left behind his supposed life of privileged to rise himself from the gutter. A scandal for the ton but his path to freedom. Then he meets Lucia, a woman who seems to meddle perfectly with the London society before he had a glimpse of the real Lucia and understood she has bigger secret than him and her journey might as well drive her to hell gates. Even if their relationship began on the wrong foot, each making assumptions about the other. Slowly Silas will prove her he is not the usual peer, he does not want to win a contest of wealth to get his entrance to her bed, his set goal is to learn who she is and offer what she has once dreamed as a little girl. It was a smoothly told story, a tale without fairies but some nice grandmother and friends to do the job, add magic and wits to their romance. One more hit with this lovely new installment. And I can’t wait for the other young women stories, each has its own personality firmly settle.
I had read the previous stories in this series and enjoyed them well enough, I'd have given them 3 stars. But this story gets a 1 star review, written years after I read and dropped it, I guess that's how much it bothered me.
I think we'd all guessed that Lucia wasn't Portuguese or Spanish (or however it was she was masquerading). In this book we get her story, therefore spoilers:
Simplesmente me encantou.
The first book of this series is still my favorite, but they are all very fun reads. I can’t wait for more about Harriet and St. Clair, and of course, Matilda and Montagu. Although given the fact that the order of featured characters’ books thus far is following the author’s list of the Peculiar Ladies at the beginning of the book, I’m rather concerned she’s going to save Matilda’s story for last!
Good story but once again I have qualms about this
The story is about Lucia ( Aashini) and Silas. Silas is determined to win Lucia for he finds a kindred spirit in her despite her secrets. Now their story was interesting and not easily settled which is fine by me but there were some discrepancies. Instead of saying two and twenty it said twenty two which I learned is uncommon in that era. I could be wrong. Then the Hindi that is spoken was I believe a little misspelled according to a translation app. I could be wrong. But what really grinds my gear is why do we continue to get the point of view of Matilda in regard to Marquess of Montagu when I thought we were reading about Lucia and Silas. And don’t get me wrong I enjoy reading about Matilda and the Marquess’ cat and mouse game but doesn’t that deviate from the main characters. I get that Matilda is consider the mother hen of the Peculiar ladies but is it necessary if her story is not next. I will continue as I like the series. Needs some editing.
I didn't enjoy this story as much as the first two. Lucia has so much anger and bitterness toward men, and then it all turns around, even falling in love in a matter of weeks? That didn't work for me. Silas isn't very well developed (nothing about his truly formative years, nothing about his business), and neither is Lucia because the author wanted to keep her secrets mysterious. Pretty cool secrets for both of them, but not worth the cost of character development. However, the slight introduction to Lucia's cultural background was interesting; would've liked more. We learn more about the other Peculiar Ladies, and see Matilda's and Montagu's relationship develop.
Sex: 1 scene Language: 0 F words, 14 Lord's name in vain, 0 S words Violence: threats Cliffhanger: not for Lucia Do I need to read books before this one: makes it better Would I read more of the series: yes
I don’t know if I was just in a mood, or if it was the writing style, but this book didn’t hold my attention as previous books in the series had. I just didn’t connect with the characters as much. But it still ends happily and everybody had a smile on their face.
(Some might think it will spoil their reading, so I marked it thus. I hope it doesn't though!) Book 3 of The Girls Who Dare Series picks up where the previous book left off. This book is about Senorita Lucia de Feria, a beautiful woman who has revenge on her mind and many secrets to hide., and Silas Anson, the new Viscount Cavendish, who is quite taken with Lucia and is, therefore, very determined to learn all of her secrets. Lucia is a member of the Peculiar Ladies’ Book Club, a group of wallflowers who gather to talk, socialize with each other...and fulfill the dares they've all sworn to fulfill. (Lucia's dare is to smoke a cigar and drink some whiskey in a man's study.) Lucia has a tremendous dislike for men in general, which this book will reveal the reasons behind it. She is also much lusted after by various men of the ton who each seek to make her their mistress, yet she refuses each one. Ever one of the questions of an avid historical novel reader is why do most authors of this genre always focus on men who "purchase" a woman? These authors often focus on men wanting to become a woman's "protector" (make her their mistress) instead of treating them with respect. This is one of the things I dislike about this and all genres of romantic novels. Silas is a man of both the ton and the streets, as he had run away from his vicious father at a young age. This made him more sympathetic to the ways of the world that the ton often sneered at. When he first saw Lucia, whom many of the ton treated in such a fashion, he was enthralled with her, yet felt she was out of his league. The first meeting of the two main characters did not go well, obviously. However, there were undercurrents of attraction that neither wanted to admit nor could they deny. Every time they met, sparks flew. However, he can't seem to get her out of his mind and ends up seeking her out at more and more events. Lucia also tries her best to ignore the feelings Silas stirs within her, but cannot seem to avoid interacting with him and various functions. One thing this author is proficient at is that she can turn on the humor and let it rip. This book shows that with nearly every paragraph. Just when things start to get too gruff, too harsh, or too emotional, she sets the humor loose and relieves the tension. My only issue with the story is that there were, once again, a great number of other people whose thoughts and relationships were brought into the middle of our intrepid Hero's and Heroine's story. I've never understood why an author had to have so many things going on when telling about one particular relationship. The more the reader gets into the story, the deeper the intrigue becomes. The mystery surrounding Lucia grows by the chapter and keeps the reader spellbound. Little by little, the story unfolds and the pace of the drama and intrigue picks up. The way the author throws little bites of other romances into the mix is both irritating and intriguing. It's irritating only because it makes the reader want to rush through the current story in order to get to the one that keeps teasing them. While it is intriguing, for this reader it is most irritating and distracting. It was hard to read the pain the Hero and Heroine unwittingly inflicted on each other with their harsh words. One wants to help, the other needs the assistance but can't accept it so does verbal injury to the other. I know that angst is not only expected in novels but is also necessary to make the drama flow properly. However, it's often difficult to read. The ending of the book could not have been better. The way the author directed the intrigue and drama and brought it to a crescendo and then brings it to a soft, mellow conclusion. This third book in the series definitely receives the "Keeper for the Shelves" nod from this reader. Well done, Emma V Leech. Well done.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I really do love this series and each one of the girls is special in her own way.
Señorita Lucia de Feria, in this book is beautiful and has taken the men in society by storm. They all want her but as a mistress and she has been offered huge amounts of incentives. She was an illegitimate daughter of a lord, she hates society and the haughty men in it and they look down their nose at her. Her plan to become well known in society has worked and her plan for revenge is rolling along just as planned.
Silas Anson, Viscount Cavendish, left his life of privilege when he was a young man and learned to survive the mean streets and worked himself up to a successful man of business. He has recently come into the title, after his father died & Silas' duty was to take his place. Silas despised the Ton and all the rules, parties, etc. that went with them but his aloof demeanor and handsome face fascinated society and the ladies were all fawning over him; although he never paid any attention to any of them and was ever linked to any female.
When Silas first saw Lucia, he was instantly drawn to her, which was completely out of character for him. He only wanted to keep the viscountcy solid and keep growing his business. Lucia found him to be unkempt in appearance, lacking in manners and just another of the aristocracy men. They just did not begin their relationship on the best of terms and it took awhile for Silas to realize she was not looking to follow in her courtesan mother's footsteps & that she had dangerous secrets. After spending time with Silas and finding him not like to other society lords; her thoughts of him changed completely from their first meeting. I highly recommend this book and the entire series - there are wonderful main and secondary characters and entertaining stories to support the cast.
I loved this book even more. Lucia or Aashini proved me wrong and I couldn't be happier. From the first glimpse we had of her in the first book I thought she was a bit of a cliche but in the second book more of her was revealed, which really was that she was a mystery. Nonetheless her story became very promising and it delivered. Then Lord Cavendish came in and he was perfect for her. He truly was a gem and I enjoyed his character a lot, especially when he was talking about Montagu. This book like the other gave us more of the other peculiar ladies. I know Kitty is next but I still can't find myself excited for her book. Mostly I feel bad for her because she has been holding on to this love for a boy for years that will reject her, or at least in the beginning. For curiosity sakes and because I dont want to miss anything from this series I will read this book and see how Kitty fares. What I'm super excited for is Harriet and St. Clair, how I love hate/love relationships although the hate seems to be one sided. Matilda is the soul of these books, if anybody ever deserved a happy ending it is her but I will wait for her book anxiously as I know it will be worth it.
Så även i To Break the Rules.
I'm surprised this is an Emma V Leech read. I've been binge reading her books and was HIGHLY disappointed in this one.
One word to describe Lucia and Silas story is = BORING.
Was this even a romance novel? The ENTIRE novel is about Lucia's revenge and why she wants that revenge. I've never been a fan of revenge stories, so the only reason I started this read was because I wanted to read the backstories of the other couples (I plan on devouring Girls Who Dare series).
Who cares why Lucia wants revenge, but that was a GOOD portion of the read. I rather read her interactions between her and Silas. I found their chemistry very lacking and the lack of steam was just disappointing. There was a kiss maybe at the 60% mark?
I did like that Silas understood Lucia was wanting revenge, so she wasn't "using" him, so that was less frustrating. I'm all about woman empowerment, but I felt like Lucia lacked that. She didn't do anything empowering except for turning men down. I guess that is good.
Overall... read for the side characters. The actual main story was a snore fest.
Lucia is by far the brightest diamond of the season, but isn't being treated that way. Of Portuguese descent, she is rumored to be the daughter of a famous courtesan, when her mother died when she was a child, and her only connection to the courtesan is that she was Lucia's father's mistress when he died.
Silas rarely attends balls, but when his eyes roam the crowd looking to see old friends, his eyes land on the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Having little care for the opinions of the ton, he will not let anything stand in his way of getting to know this young woman.
Lucia is only attending the season to seek revenge. She never plans to marry and trusts no man, not a surprise since she's been offered many less than desirable propositions since the season began, few involving marriage.
Lucia's story will break your heart, as you learn what life has thrown at her, but you will celebrate with her as she finds her first true friends and starts to open her heart. So much in this story to applaud!
Having met Lucia in the previous books I wasn't really interested in reading her story but Emma Leech surprised me and I actually ended up liking Lucia and I think Silas was absolutely perfect for her. Though Silas put his foot in his mouth in their first meeting and was actually a dick to Lucia, he rectified the error of his ways and redeemed himself.
Lucia's struggle with her growing love for Silas and her need for revenge was beautifully showcased and I really felt her pain. Silas's love and desire to protect Lucia and keep her safe was perfect for this story.
I can't wait for Harriet and St. Clair's story. Montague is really intriguing and I look forward to seeing more of him the next books as I am assuming Matilda's would be the last books in the series.
Lucia is out for revenge on the man that killed her father. Past experiences taught her that trusting a man is foolish and dangerous. So when Silas, Lord Cavendish shows his interest she is happy to express her derision and go, too many men of the ton want her as a mistress, judging her only by her heritage. Except Silas, he who despises the ton and its hypocrisy is anything but a rotten prideful peer aiming to make Lucia his mistress.
I didn't believe the chemistry at first, but Silas won over Lucia by wanting to protect her and giving her the respect she deserves, perhaps the first man to do so in a long time. In turn, Lucia slowly reveals her secrets, knowing that they will be safe with him. This is a love based on trust first and foremost. That's really what attracted me to the book and it gives it credit, because a relationship based on their looks and both are very beautiful people, would have been hollow and unbelievable.
The supporting cast of Lucia's friend Matilda as well as Dharani and Fred doesn't outshine the protagonists' story, rather enhances it.
Another great book to the series! Ms. Lucia has secrets, deep secrets that can get her killed. She is part of the peculiar ladies v Club. Everyone believes she is the daughter of a famous courtesan and has offered her exorbitant amount of money that she has turned everyone down. Silas, Lord Cavendish is new to his title after his estranged father dies. He is sloppy, messy and not your normal peer. When he spots Lucia at a ball he is captivated by her beauty. When he puts his foot in his mouth he realizes she has secrets. Lucia has stayed has only revealed her secret once to a man she thought loved her but she promised herself she can not trust anyone not even her friends. A beautiful story with her secrets finally told and realized she not only can trust her friends but the man she loves!
5 STARS for the 3 rd Book in the Girls Who Dare Series, which have all been 5 STARS so far. This witty entertaining and smartly written story follows the girls but highlights, Lucia and Miranda. It is a pleasure to read about Lucia as she tangles with Silas, a very worthy Lord. This electric filled relationship kept me turning page after page from start to finish, from the time I opened the book and started reading. Yes, Miranda's relationships we're interesting as well but not finalized but I am trying to be patient knowing it will be coming. Lucia's secrets were certainly not guessed by me, surprising, and I loved the beautiful ending! 17 & up. SEXUAL CONTENT: NO
This series is growing on me but I still prefer the Rogues and Gentlemen series. Lucia was obviously misinterpreted and wash who she was thought to be. She was wanted by the tin but only as a mistress. Shows had just returned to society following his abusive father's death and on seeing Lucia for the first time falls in love. Lucia doesn't want to be hurt again but Shows gradually gets her to trust him. There are so many great characters in this book, Silas, Free and Many has are my favourites. I also like Matilda and greetings with Uncle Monty! I expect we will have to wait for the last book in the series for that happy ending. In the mean time I look forward to Kitty's story.
I’m thoroughly obsessed with this authors series. You must read them in order as they have events and side charters whose stories build with each new book.
This has so many aspects I loved, my only ding is that the guy fell so fast, that it felt more like lust at first sight. He was such a genuine character though, that I almost didn’t care. But I still felt they should have had more interactions getting to know each other. The girl took more time and it helped balance the book.
There is light steam and only after marriage, if that’s an issue for you. Also very easily skipped or skimmed over.
HEA: Yes Steam: Yes, 2/5* heat Cliffhanger: No, but must be read in order
thoroughly enjoyed this book-not as much as the first or second of this series unfortunately. the secret lucia was holding absolutely caught me off guard-definitely wouldn’t have guessed it whatsoever. kudos to the author!
the beginning of the book was a bit of a drag forsure, but once it picked up i couldn’t put it down. i love the characters and the diversity of the book. also the spice and tension was perfect. definitely a bit different from the first two books in this series!
overall lesson from this book: putting your trust in somebody will always be a gamble. the question is: how does somebody earn it?
This is a story which makes you feel the warmth of trust that love brings...not an electrifying connection that sizzles you, but a warm blanket that tells you, you are safe, you are loved. I loved how the story unfolded, and as always, the depth and layers of all the other characters. I love the way one story in this series leads to the other...all in a single string. And I appreciate Emma for her thorough research on Indian culture...the snippets were vivid and accurate.
Viscount Cavendish and Lucia were an interesting pair of "misfits." Cavendish blatantly disdained the ton while Lucia wanted to be accepted by them, or so it appeared. Together they overcome an initial (and witty) dislike of each other, build a fragile trust, then fall in love. All this amid a stealthy plot for revenge. I enjoyed the book, though I thought Cavendish was a bit over-eager to help Lucia at the beginning, apparently so struck by her beauty.
