Caleb always knew that his work was dangerous. For years, he'd thrived on the adrenaline rush, the danger thrumming under his skin, the tangible efforts of his labor a secondary reward when the flames flickered away to nothing and he was able to save a building, or save a life. He'd thought that the Johnson City Fire Station 10 was his home - until he got caught in a building with no way out.
Henry wasn't always shy and meek. As a child he'd always been buoyant and vivacious; in university he was the life of the party. And then he met Pritchard, and before he knew it he was skipping classes, flunking out, and isolated from his friends and family on threat of Pritchard's fists. Finally finding the courage to leave him was the best thing that Henry's ever done for himself - and also the hardest.
Caleb and Henry are both trying to put their lives back together, both scarred in different and lingering ways. Henry's bruises might have healed - but Pritchard's fists had left their mark on his soul. And Caleb's body is still healing from the burns and broken bones he'd suffered in that burning house. Neither of them are looking for love. Neither of them want someone to look beyond the surface. A quick jolt of pleasure is all they need before going their separate ways again... right?
2. Slander
Benedict d'Arcy has never had to worry about where his next meal was coming from, or whether he'd have enough to purchase the season's latest fashions. Growing up in the prestigious d'Arcy family meant comfort, stability, and a certain amount of lavish opulence. But when his beloved father dies, leaving his stepmother in charge of the family's assets, Benedict is demoted from shining star to suspicious freeloader.
Kota's parents have always been wealthy, too, but Kota chose another path in life - becoming a police officer. He's comfortable in his small home, knowing that he's benefiting his community and making a difference in the world. He's a simple man, with simple pleasures, and the only thing that's missing from his life is a committed partnership with someone he loves.
When Benedict's suspicions about his stepmother's involvement in his father's death begin to grow and manifest, he decides that it's time for him to leave the family home - at least until he has concrete proof against his stepmother. But he mistimes his efforts, and something goes wrong - he's being followed. When he stumbles into the next county's annual Policeman's Ball, he doesn't expect for a man with kind eyes and gentle hands to help him to his feet and claim that they're together. He doesn't expect an immediate show of trust and willingness to get to the bottom of his situation.
And he sure as hell doesn't expect their one night of pretending to be in a relationship to lead to something more - something authentic.
3. Secrets
Crew Turner didn’t make his decision to leave the military lightly. He’s always enjoyed being with his brothers in arms, even if it did mean traveling far from his home and family and seeing unspeakable horrors.
Mark Hartnett doesn’t go out much. Ashamed of the large birthmark that covers his upper body, and too nerdy to have much in common with the general public, he has few friends, preferring to live his life behind a computer monitor.
Crew makes Mark want all the things he never thought he’d have – but Crew is hiding something underneath his good old boy façade, and those secrets might just tear them apart.
I read five of the six stories in this set. I'm very glad that I picked it up on sale for only .99 cents. This author needs a good, decent, honest support team. A decent editor and a decent proofreader could do wonders for these lack luster, poorly researched, just words on pages stories.
This collection of stories, from the first book to the last, hooked me line and sinker. I didn't want to stop to get something to eat, go to work, or go to sleep. The plots were different scenarios and several characters from the previous book/books were meshed into the next books. I really enjoyed this author and how he spun these stories to keep me reading. Thank you Avery Ford!
Book 1. Scars. Henry and Caleb, Henry back home with his over protective parents after escaping an abusive relationship. Caleb back home after being severely injured on the job as a fire fighter, severely disfigured and depressed. Caleb needs a room mate, Henry needs to escape his parents. Henry sees Caleb, not just his scars. A lot of issues, a lot of angst and a lot of sexy times. Book 2. Slander. Benedict and Dakota. Benedict's father dies under suspicious circumstances and he suspects his young step mother. After certain events, he Fears for his life and runs into Dakota at the policeman ball. Suspense, drama, intrigue. Loved it. Book 3. Secrets. Crew and Mark. Mark, disfigured with multiple birthmark thinks nobody is ever going to want him. Crew, retired Navy Seal with a big secret. They get drunk playing poker at friends wedding in Vegas and get married. Lots of trust issues, secrets and lack of communication. Book 4. Protector. Reed and Logan. Reed is a celebrity fashion designer with a stalker threatening death. Logan , ex Navy Seal is brought in to be his bodyguard. Attraction, denial, Logan's first time, kidnapping. Great book. Book 5. Gingerbread. Alex and Kellen. Kellen is a cop and deep in the closet, with very homophobic parents. Alex is just back from culinary school in Paris and has opened his own bakery. They have a past. A break in brings Kellen to Alex in an official capacity. A lot of soul searching, a break up and an accidental outing from the closet. The ending was beautiful. Book 6. Ethan and Owen. Ethan is nearing 30 and wants what his sister has, a partner and commitment. Owen can't commit, thinks he is not worthy. He has past issues, big ones causing guilt and self loathing. This was awesome
So. The writing wasn’t terrible, but I only made it through two of the books (and that only with a lot of skimming). Mostly because it seemed as though the premise of the whole series is “let’s take the most emotionally inappropriate situation for a first kiss, and then pretend that we’ve made it okay for the two characters to be in a relationship anyway!” And I just...can’t.
Plus there’s a lot of...shifting with the character’s emotions, like their reactions aren’t realistic, they are just what the story calls for ...I’m not quite sure how to explain it.
But I’m going to forego the rest of this collection.
Sacra-4 stars-Caleb is a former firefighter, injured and returning home to recover. Henry is home to recover from an abusive relationship. Their scars are both deep, some visible, some not, but they understand and need each other to get them through. As they are there for each other, give each other what they’ve never gotten from anyone else in their lives, their bond and trust deepens. They share vulnerability, shame, and love. Beautiful book, great characters. Henry is cute, Caleb sweet, and Kota a wonderful friend to them both. Slander-
I liked all the stories, they were very heart felt. Even though the couples loved each other they all had trails to go though in order for them to really love each other. I think is how love is.
I got pulled closer and closer to this cast of characters and their lives. It is no lie to say I wish I could be a part of their lives in real life. So very well done! Five stars is too little. Well done. Downloading the next one!
These characters are so incredibly different, and well worth a read. Each book so different, but a lovely theme running through it. Thank you for your hard work on this set of books.
Loved every one of these books, each book is filled with love, laughter and tears, all ending with a happy ever after. Can't wait to start the next box set.
Only read the first 3 books. It was okay the stores felt like they got better as the read got to the series. I felt like it was lacking in the beginning.
The first book started out good. However each book felt like a carbon copy of the last so by the time I got to the last book, the start just felt redundant.
