A forced engagement. A cramped ship. Two hearts that refuse to bend.
When Ceola’s father arranges her marriage to Tuav Strand, she’s furious. Not only is she in love with someone else, she’s tired of sacrificing everything for her father’s political career. But when her father offers her a handsome sum to spend three months with the man before she calls it off, she gladly accepts the deal. That money means freedom.
Tuav is a sailor, not a politician. He won’t abandon his summer patrol for some spoiled girl from the capital, even if she is the Regent’s daughter. What he can do, however, is make her miserable enough to break off the engagement herself.
When Ceola arrives at the coast to spend time with the man she already hates, she finds him leaving on patrol. The only way she can fulfill her bargain is to join his expedition. Stuck on a confining ship with him, a lighthearted crew, and an old natural philosopher, her only respite is that in three months it will all be over. Or will it?
This sweet romance is an enemies-to-lovers tale full of banter, adventure, romance, and a happily ever after.
Emily Deady was as an avid reader who hated writing. But one day she realized that most authors loved cats and tea, her two favorite things. So, she stopped fighting the inevitable and she began to write. She loves a good romance, her real life hero who patiently listens to all her plotlines, and hitting the trails for light hike in sunny San Diego.
I really liked a lot about this book. I wish it had a different cover, it leads you to believe this is a romance and it's not really. I would put this book on a young adult shelf for my 12 to 14 year old. I like reading YA fiction, but didn't know that is what I was picking up. The heroine acts about 16 and the leading man around 18. They are set to marry by their parents. They go on an adventure that was pretty fun to read and they pretty much hate each other almost the whole time. It is amazing I kept reading this but it had some good elements. There was a lot about this little book that just fell flat. There was no emotion, an editor needed to get their hands on this to fix a lot of little issues. It was written on a land we know nothing about and the rules of society are never told to us. She is a lady and has a companion but then is allowed to go on a boat with 6 men..... The story has some holes, everything is a little too easy...one girl takes on a group of 3 pirates and wins... Lots of good here, the writer has promise.
Ceola feels as though she has no say in her own life, still being a child in the eyes of her father she yearns to be free. Which is why she sneaks away to meet Jaako he is handsome suave everything she wants his kisses thrill her but he is going away for two years to oversee his father's shipping company. Ceola is sad but makes him promise to write often and she will do the same until they can be together again, The next day her father informs her she is to be wed to his General's son, Tuav the younger son, Ceola has met him and dislikes him, she waits till her father is alone to bargain with him over the marriage an agreement is reached between them she shall spend three months with him and his family if after this time she still doesn't want the marriage so be it. Traveling is not something she likes but if it will end the engagement it will be worth it. Upon arrival, she is told Tuav is leaving the next day for a three- month journey to check the coastline for intruders she insists on going along. On the trip, she picks a plant and is covered in boils and itches terribly just one of the problems she has. When Tuav decides to send her back home after reading a letter she wrote damning him to her father she tries to find Jakko only to find he hasn't been seen in the town disappointed she returns to the inn where she is given a letter from her father warning of The Purple Thief somebody is leaking information to them about the shipping of expensive cargo they then rob the boats, he warns her to tell no one, She realizes she must be on Tuav's boat so she can try and find info, she begs him to take her explaining she never intended to mail the letter she had just been mad and venting, he agrees to take her. Now the true adventure begins, join them to find out what happens next.

Ceola, daughter of the Regent, thinks herself in love with a young man, Jaako, who has just taken it off in the first chapter on what will be a 6-month separation while he assumes his father's job in the import-export business in a distant city. Immediately after Jaako leaves, her father informs her that he has arranged a marriage to the son of a powerful general. Her father strikes a bargain with her: If she spends three months with the young man before crying off, her father will accede to her wishes and pay her for the attempt.
When Ceola arrives at the general’s compound, she finds that the young man, Tuav, is about to set out on his summer patrol. She and Tuav end up agreeing that she can join the patrol. As a bonus, they will be passing the city where are Jaako is; she hopes to find him there.
What will happen on board the ship? Will Ceola and Tuav come to understand each other better or will they remain as uncomfortable with each other as when they first met? Will Ceola meet Jaako and run off with him?
I found the writing in this book to be a little bit stilted and unnatural. This wasn't helped by the use of words and phrases that seem to be particular to this world. There was a lot of book-specific vocabulary to keep track of. Some issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage were present.
The plot itself was very complex and enjoyable to follow. There were the plotlines about the romances, of course, Ceola’s with Jaako as well as Tuav. Ceola and Tuav also got involved with some intrigue while on patrol. Jaako had his own mini-arc as well. There is also an underpinning structure of whether Ceola will be forced to marry or not.
In all, I found this to be an intriguing but sometimes frustrating read. But the compelling characters and intertwining plotlines kept my interest.
I received a free review copy, but this did not affect my review.
This was a very interesting and complex story to read. The author has developed multiple plotlines and scenarios throughout the book. I had a difficult time keeping the names straight, probably because there was nothing with which I could relate them. Ceola has fallen "in love" with Jaako, but he is leaving for a prolonged period so can this go anywhere? Her father has different plans for her, which he ultimately let's her make her own decision if she will spend at least three months with Tuav, his general's youngest son. However, when she arrives - the big news is this three month period will be on board a ship. A place that is very difficult to keep distance between herself and Tuav. A very gripping story that should delight the reader. A clean romance that I would recommend if you enjoy a little "political intrigue". I received an ARC copy of this book, however, I also purchased a copy. This is my voluntary, honest and completely personal review. VICKI FROM WYOMING
INCREDIBLE!!! Wow! Man, talk about not shipping loyalties. I really like this little guy with all the misunderstanding, miscommunication and down right stubbornness. A whirlwind of activities and events that draw every emotion into play while holding your attention from start to finish. Struggling with all the trials and tribulations while trying to navigate through rough waters brings this little gem alive flawlessly. Emily totally rocks this little jewel with one amazing storyline along with an thrilling plot pull this page turning wonder together perfectly. All the drama, uncertainty, danger and suspense keep you riveted on a razors edge. The characters are complex, believable and so realistic it's easy to relate. The scenes are so vivid and detailed it's easy to picture each scenario as they play off one another seamlessly. Incredible job Emily, thanks for sharing this little gem with us.
A political marriage is what her father wants for her and that is not what Ceola wants! Now she makes a business deal with her father she will spend three months with Tuav then if she wishes she will be free and paid the wages of a captain for those three months. Leaving for the coast with Runa and Finnbogi she finds when she reaches Tuav home he is ready to sail on patrol. Not to be put off Ceola sails with Tuav it was not an easy trip for them in many different ways. There is adventure, danger, pirates, and traitors awaiting them. The author has shown how Ceola comes into her own and how strong she truly is. The characters were world-class with a plot that was outstanding. This is a book that is worth taking time to read I highly recommend it. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
My apologies for taking so long to review this book. I bought it and read it in 2019, but just now re-read it to make sure my memories were correct.
First, the language was far too modern for the book. No historical heroine says Ugh 20 times a chapter. Nor do they say things like 'has it ever been a day', followed by more modern speaking. It was tough to get into the story, knowing that I'm reading a romantic historical but reading 21st Century language at the same time.
Second, I couldn't get into this book, there appeared to be pieces of the story missing and it left an awful lot for me to fill in the blanks.
The author needs a strong hand with editing to fill in the blanks in the story and to correct the modern day language that screams 21st century and not anything historical.
I really enjoyed Close Quarters, though I have a soft spot for enemies to lover storylines. If you enjoy KM Shea, Melanie Cellier or Shari Tapscott you will enjoy this book. Ceola is an interesting and relatable heroine who is stuck between her father's position as Regent, the infatuation she has with her new love interest and also looking for a taste of freedom. I enjoy watching her grow and interact with the secondary characters. Overall it was a quick and enjoyable read.
While this cover is misleading and could use some help, this story was SO GOOD! It definitely had the enemies-to-lovers troupe and was a clean YA romance. Though I wished their was a little more spark or time together between the main couple, their love story was mostly believable. I definitely would have loved an epilogue. Or just another book to follow up would be good too. Overall, this was a light, quick and enjoyable read!
A quick read that kept me turning pages, the first book in the A Brekka Romance series. Tuav and Ceola’s story has suspense, drama, danger, confinement, a villain, two people who learn that together they can overcome anything, and romance. I will be looking for the next book in the series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I liked how Ceola and Tuava grew in personality and character. Their romance was clean and sweet. There were some editing problems, which happens with indy writing. The story was predictable, but was still fun to read.
This story plot is about an arranged marriage that is not met with happiness for either party. But after 3 months of an unexpected adventure at sea they change their minds.
Great story, with an adventurous, story line, love and betrayal on the high seas. Wonderful characters Lots of excitement, danger, and learning a lesson, in love. Thank you ❤
Be patient readers, the beginning of the story was a little slow for my liking. The story will gain momentum and you will marvel at the heroine. Fun story and different
Ok so it was a good idea, I liked the characters. I think it needed fleshing out a bit more, maybe a deeper plot, but it was enjoyable short story. I'd totally read it again if it was re-worked a little more substance.
I really liked this and it was cute but I wish there were more, or at least have an indication that it would continue as a series? As there were too many loose ends.
The building of tension between the two characters was pretty good, and that's all I really look for in a fantasy romance.
This is so much more than a romance. It is a fun tale of adventure with great characters, an interesting plot, and excellent dialogue. It’s fresh and clean and an overall good read!
This is a sweet read. The plot had twists and turns. From enemies to friends to maybe more. I found the read worth reading and can't wait for the next one.
