It’s business as usual for Emmett Love as he attempts to overcome terminal illness; murderous, cave-dwelling cannibals; looters; schemers; fraudsters; bounty hunters; mercenaries; and the crazy cast of characters who are somehow beating him in his reelection for sheriff.
PRELIMINARY COMMENTS:
“The excruciatingly long wait for Spider Rain is finally over, and it doesn’t disappoint! Poor Emmett appears to be the only sane person in Dodge, and that makes for lots of laughs. Of course, precocious little Scarlett—my favorite character—outdoes herself, yet again.”
“Of all the books John Locke writes, the westerns are my favorites. Spider Rain—announced a year ago—is here at last. I was mildly annoyed the author wrote and published two other books while writing this one, but he says the westerns are a labor of love, and maybe what makes them so special is the extra time he puts into writing them. Spider Rain will give you at least one smile per page. It’s Locke at his best.”
“John has confided this might be his last western. I sincerely hope that’s not the case, because reading these books is like spending quality time with your favorite friends and family. Spider Rain is funny and sad and hopeful and crazy and good-hearted and I loved every minute of it.”

Yeah, I know they are completely based in nothing real (....or are they?). But that doesnt matter. Because it's a wild, fun ride.
You literally can never predict what is going to happen. Will someone die? How will they die? Didn't expect that to happen. Will they escape? Almost. Didnt expect that. Who is this person? HER? No way.
Yep, all the way through.
To me, I mark a book four or five stars if A) I can't put the book down. And B) I'm thinking about the characters when I'm not reading. So this book gets five stars.
I just LOVE IT. It's funny and original and completely strange and fast paced and ridiculous.
John Locke got me out of my 6 month reading slump. SIX MONTHS. Never in my life did I go six months without reading. He may not be Jane Austin but his books are FUN. And there is a lot to be said about that.
John Locke is like the patron saint of self-published authors. After great success in the insurance and real estate businesses, John wrote a series of action adventure novels with the usual results.... No one would publish them. So, he self-published and eventually had a best seller, then another, then another. Soon he had sold over five million copies and had the extreme joy of telling all those publishers who turned him down to go F* themselves.
In addition to writing action adventure John writes westerns. These books too have become best sellers. They’re a mixture of outrageous comedy, historical drama, and action. In Spider Rain, Sheriff of Dodge City, Emmett Love is faced with a recall election. One of his opponents wants to redirect a river, put a moat around Dodge City to keep out the Indians, and swears that the Indians will pay for it. You get the idea. There are wars with a tribe of cannibalistic women living in caves outside of Dodge. There are also the machinations of Love’s five-year-old daughter who has witchy powers and protects her father by exploding the heads of any bad guys who wants to do him harm. There’s a beautiful mansion that’s being dragged out west by a team of oxen, the usual Emmett Love characters, Emmett’s wife, the beautiful and feisty Gentry, and Emmett’s crab walking, stone throwing friend Shrug. There's a treatise on the history of cowboy hats, and of course, that spider rain.
One thing Locke does not do is elucidating much on backstory from his previous books so if you haven’t read his work best to start at the beginning of the series.
Spider Rain is far from the best Emmett Love novel or the best of John Locke, but if you like wacky westerns that have a nice country narrative, a touch of the paranormal, and some original, off-the-wall action, pick up one of the Emmett Love books. Or, if you want to try the best of John Locke, get one of his action adventure Donavan Creed novels starting with Lethal People.
Emmett's adventures continue with events conspiring to undo all of his hard work in Dodge. From the expected to unexpected, Spider Rain is another fun time hanging out with Emmett and his friends and family.
Swing and a long foul ball by one of my favorite authors
Fun ride as usual, but, WOW what an unsatisfying and abrupt ending!
It's almost like he wanted to get this book out before the election and didn't have time to write an ending. I'll tell you why, but it's a SPOILER ALERT:
The bad/rich guy comes to town and runs for sheriff, promising to build a moat around the town and make the Indians pay for it. There are plenty of other dump on Trump parallels which just serve to take you out of the story.
AND (more spoiler) he missed a PERFECT joke opportunity when the three-legged man fell to the ground on "all fours." Please change it to "all fives" and thank me later. ;)
Emmett, Scarlet and Shrug have got to be three of the most fascinating characters in modern writing. John is a genius in how he demonstrates their individual talents and how he brings in other unique characters into the storyline. I love these westerns better than all the different genres I read and could read them relentlessly if John could write them fast enough. The danger, humor and matter-of-fact manner of death is found no where else. Some real laugh out loud events are scattered throughout as in all Emmett Love books. Hated to see it end. Thank you John...again.
Another fun read from John Locke. I pick up each of his new books as soon as the email arrives. And for $0.99? Too Good! This is the sixth Emmett & Gentry story. Always entertaining. All my favourite characters are there: Emmett, Gentry, Rudy, Rose, Scarlett, Shrug (AKA Wayne Newton), and even Enorma Suitors (nee Enorma Stitz). John never dissapoints.
I have to say, this one comes at a time when we have two parties running for office with a lot of baggage. So does Emmett. And his battle in the election of his time for sheriff. I give John a lot of credit for this part of the story for being a thing from Emmetts era and our era. Good job! And of course the story is just as good as all Emmett stories are. Love them.
I have always enjoyed Locke's novels (the currently alive one). This novel didn't disappoint. The writing is so good, and the wry humor the best. The story is wonderful and I am looking forward to the next book.
The Emmett Love series is my favorite by John Locke. You never know what you're going to get which makes these books so exciting. I hope there will be more books about Emmett and his family!
Topical. I wonder if the political stuff will go over some folks' heads, or if it will cause a ruckus among a certain subset of the population. Hopefully Locke doesn't receive any backlash.
This is such an enjoyable series. The characters are remarkably entertaining, the story is like nothing you've ever read before and they never disappoint.
