Bill Callahan, columnist, blogger, superhero, is Oracle. It isn't easy being a hero, especially a D-Class one with a single power. Seeing the future was a huge edge, even for an otherwise normal human, but he still had to carefully choose his battles.
As if being a superhero dealing with more powerful villains wasn't hard enough, he also had to avoid the Nocturnal Maidens, the premiere superheroine team in the city. They really didn't like him, at all. He had no idea what he'd done, but they seemed to despise him, and hold him in contempt.
He was alone, fought alone, lived alone, and with his double life had very few friends and none of them close. His life was about to change, significantly, if he could survive…
Content Not suitable for children. This is a superhero story with a slow burn harem romance element including explicitly mature scenes between a man and a woman, and other mature content. This first book doesn't go into the harem aspect, but the two sequels in this three-book series will. You have been warned.
I was born and raised on Long Island and always had two hobbies...
I loved computers, and I read books voraciously.
I've been working in the computer industry for twenty years, and have continued to read a large number of books. On a whim, I started writing erotic short stories online, and to my surprise they were always highly rated, and more than that, I found I loved to write. Since then I have worked at improving my writing, and started publishing on Amazon.
- Re-read April 2022. It might be a little surprising to re-read a book that I rated 2.5 stars but I have had a recent change in perspective. When I first read this book I put myself in the MCs place and my first review is how I would feel if everything happened to me. Recently I have been reading/watching a lot of Redit stories on cheating and it has made me think more about how people act. How people can act against their core values and not see anything wrong with that until something drastic happens. In cheating stories it is known as the "affair fog". After watching those stories I was reminded of this book. This still isn't a great story but I liked that I was able to read it from a different perspective this time. I usually feel the same way about a book with subsequent reads.
Original review below:
This one is a little different than the authors typical book. This is the first time he has written a story about superheros instead of magic. The MC wasn't transported to another world. This is a world where some people have super powers. Nobody knows how it happens or to whom. All that is known is that when someone is in a stressful situation, what they need/wish for in that moment is the type of power they get. Most people want strength, speed, flight, etc. Normal superhero powers. The main character in this story always loved superheros and thought he would never be one. Most of the people that get powers were much younger than him. So instead, he followed heroes around and wrote stories about them. In one of those times, he got caught in the crossfire and because he was there, a hero died trying to protect him. During this is when he got his powers. At that time, all he could think about is wanted to help heroes so they would not have to die. He wanted to know everything about their powers and how they worked. That is when he became Oracle. He can see the future, but only in a limited way. He gets visions of superhero fights and is able to come up with ways to change the outcome if it is bad. This also is limited. His ability is not able to be used on command and he doesn't know the identity of the hero or villain. All he wants to do is help other heroes. The more powerful ones. Nobody seems to want his help or trust him though.
He works in a city in Texas where there are 3 super powerful female heroes. For whatever reason, they hate Oracle and refuse to work with him. They won't listen to a word he says and when he does help them, they just yell at him. One even attacked him. Then he gets a vision that changes his life.
I am going to continue the series. Sometimes the second book is better once the setup is out of the way.
I will stay tuned with this series becuse I like the themes of this author, but this work is seriously weak, it has so much it can improve on, but giving the author own admition for this to be its first forey into the 'Super Heroe' theme it is admisible, hope the next two works on this series is an improvement.
This book is an origins story about a guy who can some times see the future, and some chicks. As far as super hero stories go, I'm not really that much into them so I won't comment. As for the rest... tl;dr overall a small innofensive book. If you like superhero stories and some (few) spicy scenes, and don't mind if it's not 100% correct grammar, you may like this. At least in book 1, this is not a harem story.
The usual dilemma about the double life was simplistic and repetitive. He kept going on about how he wanted a standard life but he also wanted to continue being a super. On and on and on. Just make up your mind already.
The relationship between him and the heroines was even worse. At first, he hates them, with good reason. He was scorned, told to fuck off and even assaulted by them, when he tried to help or even just mind his own business. At this point, I knew the rating of this book was going to be bad. There's not much chance of redemption in this situation, except some bullshit story for the reasoning of the girls. And it came. If you've read any other book by this author, you won't have much trouble guessing it. In the middle of the book, of course, they settle their differences and the girls were just misunderstood all this time; wow, who would have guessed. If the protagonist wasn't a doormat by this point, he became one.
The author did improve a little from his previous works, but many of her bad mannerisms are still around. Particularly, the liberal exchange between "their" and "they're", "your" and "you're" etc are jarring. The overused "Point is," or "Point was," was also present. This was very tame in comparison to her other works, though.
For me, this book falls between good and bad kind of books. It has some good features that makes me keep on, but at the same time the bad things makes me uninterested and not really invested in what is going to happen. The writing style of this book was more about telling rather than showing. There were a lot of scenes, especially fighting scenes, where i wished that the author took his time in describing them and give more depth to them.
Man I couldn't wait for it and I'm glad I wasn't disappointed.
Loved the book from the beginning although they were some rough spots. Mostly because one of the main subjects in this books makes my blood boil with hatred but while I drop most books I like D.R Rosier and decided to see it through and I'm glad I did.
Not quite what I normally see from Rosier, and a little more superficial (urg...). But then superhero harem stories tend to be a bit shallow. Nicely done, enough that I'm looking for the next installment.
This was a little slow at the start and I wasn't sure if it would work out. I am pleased to report that I enjoyed reading this book. This is a different kind of story for this author, usually there are three in a series.
I enjoyed reading the book. I enjoy everything you write. Please continue the series. I like the new concept and I can see how you can really expand on this universe.
I gotta say this series surprised me.Now my second favorite hero and villain series behind cherry blossom girls. The writing was excellent and the characters reach through the pages and tell their stories perfectly.
This is (maybe?) the sort of origin for several series by this author. Sadly, I am wading this backwards as I didn’t realize such before reading other series. Still, a very good story, with likable characters. Moving to book two.
