It's a morning to forget for Lily, who after suffering at the hands of the local wildlife then goes on to earn the ire of a beautiful girl riding a banged-up 1964 Vespa. As Lily later realises the identity of her mysterious scooter assailant, the news threatens to ensure that her year will end on anything but a peaceful note.
I always find myself with a conundrum when it comes time to talk about Lily Clairet. Volume 2 especially since for me it was kind of split. I took a break halfway through and read at least a dozen other books. Not because it was bad, but I just needed a break. So it is more like 4-stars for the first half and 4-stars for the second half, but with a break. Without it, I'd have found myself bogged down by all the Lily-ish-ness of the book... but that can be a good thing, in doses. The writing is still impeccable and the wit stays strong. Lily is highly entertaining and the situations she encounters are both ridiculous and yet believable. One of the major questions of book one is answered, at least the beginnings of an answer are there. And of course a whole new set of troubles arise.
Verdict: If you liked book 1, give this one a go. If you still like it, I understand. If you're sick of it, I understand. I'll likely pick up book 3 at some point, but it's a ways down the road.
The fun continues in this second book in this series. There's the squirrel making another appearance, a girl on a motorcycle, the first newsletter from the journalism club (which everyone seems to ignore and is soon buried under other notices), the annoying Hisakawa, the reappearance of the mysterious club president (not a friendly person), a girl that might (and might not) be on here way to becoming a singing idol and a scooter repair place with a fascinating woman working there.
There's also again the laugh-out-loud writing style of the author and you have the second must-read book in the series.
The first book started out a bit slow, but this one was good from start to finish. I don't know what it is about this series but I've never laughed so much reading a light novel as i have with this volume. I love reading about Lilys troublesome encounters. The new character introduced in this volume is a great addition to the cast too. I can't decide who I like more her or Natsumi. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of trouble finds Lily next.
The cast grows. The journalism club president makes an appearance and adds more angst to Lily’s growing concerns. More about idol Kazuna is learned, perhaps. All the characters here make for a delightful read. Only one scooter was harmed in this production.
I’m invested in this light novel slice of life. I’ll finish out this series and catch up with villainess Juliette and Coppelia (and Apple) in this author’s other excellent series.
And funny, literate, and creative. I don’t know how she can be both prolific and consistently entertaining. How Lily Clairet manages the mysteries of her existence drives us to continue turning pages and we are rewarded with each turn.
