When war comes to your planet, you fight, but not everyone fights for the same side. While Charles, the Quinn corporation’s beleaguered CEO, fights to navigate the political intrigues of the other powers on the planet, Moses Smokoska and his little brother abandon their father’s homestead to put on armor and learn what it means to go to war. The war might be fought among the stars and in the air but it will ultimately be won on the ground, man to man and sword to sword across a continent that spans the world. I wanted to like this book. I kept waiting for the twist or revelation that would make me interested in the characters, or intrigued by the plot. I kept waiting for any kind of world building that would explain why future humanity would be so stupid as to revert to a feudal society. But, alas, none of that ever came. The idea of power armor isn't nearly enough to make up for an anemic plot, uninspiring characters, and a painfully obvious ignorance on the part of the author about anything to do with the military. Add that to chapters which are way too long and an annoying number of spelling/scanning errors, and this ends up being a book I would recommend other military sci-fi readers avoid.
This was my first experience with Emerson Fortier's work, and I was entertained by the story. The author has written about a planet whose inhabitants were involved in a war. There were two major protagonists who chose to fight in the war in different ways. I enjoyed Moses' story, but I thought that he was almost too perfect as he didn't seem to have any defects. M. A. Bray's narration was good, and his performance added to the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.
From a farm boy to an officer in an army with hardly any training trying to keep his troopers alive in an impossible battle against a battle tested foreign enemy. With a general who has on fought with computers and simulations and a leader who realizes that his troops are irreplaceable, how can they change the outcome? Fortier has penned a engrossing story!!!
I very much enjoyed reading this book. The characters were interesting and their different perspectives were shown through the story telling, and the themes and styles told were intriguing. A very good set up for the series. The only real gripe I had was the spelling issues throughout the book.
