Moulessehoul, an officer in the Algerian army, adopted a woman's pseudonym to avoid military censorship. Despite the publication of many successful novels in Algeria, Moulessehoul only revealed his true identity in 2001 after leaving the army and going into exile and seclusion in France. Anonymity was the only way for him to survive and avoid censorship during the Algerian Civil War.
In 2004, Newsweek acclaimed him as "one of the rare writers capable of giving a meaning to the violence in Algeria today."
His novel The Swallows of Kabul, set in Afghanistan under the Taliban, was shortlisted for the 2006 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. L'Attentat won the Prix des libraires in 2006, a prize chosen by about five thousand bookstores in France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Canada.
Khadra pledges for becoming acquainted with the view of the others. In an interview with the German radio SWR1 in 2006, he said “The West interprets the world as he likes it. He develops certain theories that fit into its world outlook, but do not always represent the reality. Being a Muslim, I suggest a new perspective on Afghanistan, on the religious fanaticism and the, how I call it - religiopathy. My novel, the The Swallows of Kabul, gives the readers in the West a chance to understand the core of a problem that he usually only touches on the surface. Because the fanaticism is a threat for all, I contribute to the understanding of the causes and backgrounds. Perhaps then it will be possible to find a way to bring it under control.”

I finally finished this series of Algerian cop novels which I read to practice my French. I'm not sure what I learned other than Algeria had a terrible civil war in the 1990s. Commissaire Brahim Llob is a tough, foul-mouthed, but honest and caring police detective trying to sort out the mess created by the warring religious and other factions in Alger. Much violence and slang, but probably a pretty realistic portrayal of the situation at the time.

Cet auteur est l'un de mes préférés. Ce quatuor met en scène les enquêtes du Commissaire Llob, écrivain à ses heures perdues qui sert de témoin à une Algérie dévastée par les guerres et l'intégrisme religieux. J'aime la façon d'écrire de cet auteur, toujours dure et imagée, à la fois belle et ravagée.

عبر 542 صفحة تكون مجريات هذا العمل الأدبي المميز ، فمحافظ الشرطة النزيه المسمى ابراهيم الذي كان ضمن مجاهد سابق في صفوف جيش التحرير الوطني، يجد نفسه مقحما ضمن مخطط لإنهاء أحد الرجال عن التصفية و تشويه صورته من طرف كبار القادة في الحكم الجزائري، تبدأ أحداث الرواية حين تقرر السلطات إصدار عفو عن محكومين، يحاول لوب #الكوميسير الحيال دون الإفراج عن مجرم سيكوباتي في منتهى الخطورة، لتكون هذه أولى الخطوات لبداية تلك التحركات المتشعبة و المليئة بالالغاز المفخخة، و كشف مستور لا يسر القريب و البعيد على حد سواء
المطلع على أحداث الرواية يحد نفسه يتجول في الجزائر العاصمة و أحياءها الشعبية المليئة بالمقاهي و المطاعم الشعبية، التي يرتادها الجميع، ففيها تُسمع اخر المستجدات، تكذيب أو نفي شائعات، و كل يبحث فيها عن صيد له. في الرواية أيضا يسافر بنا الكاتب إلى فترة حساسة جدا من تاريخ الجزائر بعد الاستقلال ألا و هي فترة الثمانينات التي تعتبر نقطة انعطاف، و بداية المأساة الوطنية، الكاتب أيضا عرج على جملة من الأحداث قبل الاستقلال و صور تلك الأحداث المثيرة للجدل خصوصا قضية #الحركى التي أسالت الحبر كثيرا و مازالت كذلك ، بحيث يعتر هؤلاء ضحية من جهتين الأولى بعد أن تم فرض عليهم أن يكونوا عيون الإستعمار اليد التي تضرب من حديد أبناء جلدتهم، و الكره الذي يكنه لهم الأهالي من جراء تلك التصرفات.
الكاتب في هذه الرواية وضع الشخصية الجزائرية تحت المجهر لمحاولة فهمها برغم تقلباتها. و الرواية تحتوى الكثير من الأحداث و المفاجآت التي لا يمكن توقعها، وفق لغة جميلة و اسلوب سرد أقل ما يقال عنه انه رائع، ضف الى ذلك حضور عنصر التشويق طيلة أحداث الرواية، ناهيك عن استعمال الكثير من الأحاديث الساخرة أثناء الحوارات الثنائية،
رواية ممتعة حقا لا يُمل منها انصح بها و بشدة
حتما ستكون لي عودة للقراءة لذات الكاتب

Un excellent livre (comprenant quatre romans) à bien des niveaux ! J'ai beaucoup ri, beaucoup appris sur l'histoire et la société de l'Algérie des années 1990 en particulier. Un humour caustique, une écriture littéraire m' ont transportée dans un monde noyé par la corruption dont je n'avais idée! Passionnée par chaque phrase, il a été difficile de poser ce livre pour dormir un peu! 😂😂😂.

J'ai très peu d'expérience en roman policier, aucune en histoire algérienne et je ne connaissais Yasmina Khadra que de réputation avant d'entreprendre "La part du mort". J'ai découvert un auteur engagé, à l'écriture tranchante et à l'humour caustique. L'intrigue se déroule à la fin des années 80, juste avant les événements d'octobre 88. Le commissaire Llob, flic incorruptible dans une Algérie gangrenée par les affairistes et les magouilleurs, fait office d'alter-ego pour l'écrivain qui a manifestement des comptes à régler avec les grosses huiles de son pays.
À l'aube de la libération par grâce présidentielle d'un dangereux psychopathe surnommé SNP, Llob est intraitable dans sa volonté d'empêcher le tueur de sévir à nouveau. Lorsque ce dernier attente sans succès à la vie du milliardaire Haj Thobane avec l'arme de service du lieutenant Lino, qui est aussitôt arrêté et torturé, Llob flaire le complot et se lance sans frein dans une enquête qui met en lumière l'implication de Thobane dans le massacre des familles de harkis en 1962.
Khadra évoque sans fioritures l'histoire sanglante et brutale de l'Algérie, avec tout le fiel et l'amertume de celui qui aime sa patrie mais ne peut souffrir la malhonnêteté de ceux qui la contrôlent. Au fil des pages, la trame narrative se complexifie et s'enrichit de revirements sans jamais perdre son souffle. L'auteur évite le piège du manichéisme et rend bien la subtilité des agissements humains qui sont souvent absurdes et injustifiables. À la fois leçon d'histoire et divertissement accessible, "La part du mort" est un superbe roman qui donne envie de poursuivre ma découverte de l'oeuvre de cet auteur majeur.
