If you want to discover the captivating history of India, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! India is a land of mystery, richness, and deep spiritual discovery. Every facet of this ancient land seems scented with the famous spices that lured European traders to its shores more than five centuries ago. Here, Muslims, Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, and Buddhists live shoulder to shoulder in a crowded world of multiple gods and juxtaposed pilgrimage routes, each one perfectly peaceful in their own beliefs and traditions. More than one billion people live on the Indian subcontinent, working in a range of industries that begins in the agricultural sector and ends in the high-tech business world of Delhi. Intensified manufacturing and digital technologies have brought modern India into the global market, trading in communications software, customer service, and IT management—but these are far from the technologies and industries that put this ancient land on every map. Long before the British Raj or the tea trade, India was beloved for its spices and jewels. For much of history, India provided the majority of the world’s diamonds from its own mines. Some of those sparkling, perfect gems grace the likes of the British crown jewels. India is quite unique in the way it has brought its ancient histories and traditions with it into the modern age. Ganesh and Shiva have accompanied their people from the Indus River Valley–the spring of Indian civilization–down the Ganges and forward through time. This was an audible listen, read by a white guy with a slight southern accent. I'm not well enough educated on Indian history to know how white washed this version of events is, but I'm willing to bet it was at least a bit. However, as an outsider, this was a fun read that gave me broad brushstrokes of Indian cultural, economic, and historical developments. Gotta find similar books to keep going on this subject!
This is a well done introduction to Indian history. Each chapter is very short but gives a good overall description of the various epochs of this incredibly ancient land. I’ve got a whole stack of Books on India to read before we go in April and I feel like this was a good start.
Overall it is good book but it is not as much thorough as I expected for example he Didn’t talk much about Akbar. If anyone have suggestions about the books on complete history of india please tell.
Easy to follow and understand- should lead on to further reading for more detail. Too understanding of those who ran the British Empire. The world would be a better place if they had stayed at home.
Listen to this as I made my way through Rajasthan, there was enough history and information to make it interesting and helpful on my trip without overpowering me with facts. Great read.
Highlights of Indian history. This book is great for someone who is looking to brush up their knowledge. If you want to be a guru on Indian history, this book is not for you.
