Lord Morgan Easton is, first and foremost, an agent of the Crown. To achieve his purposes, he has become Society’s golden boy, and a renowned rake. When it's discovered that notorious French spy, Genet, is attending a house party in a small seaside village, he is tasked to infiltrate the gathering and arrest the spy. But first, he must convince a certain woman to become his partner and pose as his wife. The challenge is that she would rather see him dead. Miss Josette Northcott guards her secrets fiercely, trusts few, and enjoys the anonymity that goes along with being the headmistress of a private school in the rookeries. When Lord Morgan offers her a deal she can’t refuse, she makes it clear that this is nothing more than a business arrangement. No man, no matter how charming or infuriatingly handsome he is, can know the truth of her sordid and twisted past. As a nefarious plot begins to unfold, threatening the stability of two countries, Morgan and Josette must learn to trust each other in order to stop the assassination of both the King of France and their own prince regent. However, trust does not come easily to either agent, and when the truth of Josette’s past is finally unveiled, will they be able to accept that not only is their mission on the line, but their hearts, as well?
Laura Beers is an award-winning author. She attended Brigham Young University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management. She can't sing, doesn't dance and loves naps.
Laura lives in Utah with her husband, three kids, and her dysfunctional dog. When not writing regency romance, she loves waterskiing, hiking, and drinking Dr Pepper.
All that mixed with a suspenseful storyline with wonderful twists make this a book that all readers will enjoy. Even though this is book 6, readers will not hesitate to grab the rest of the series just to see the characters again!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these books by Laura Beers! She writes in such an engaging way. And she’s created a world that I never want to leave. I’m always a little sad when I’m finished reading one of these books. They are just so amazing!
I was thrilled to get to learn more about Josette in this one. She was just such a mystery. Even through most of this book she kept her past hidden both from Morgan and from the reader. There were snippets where she might have told a secret or two, but nothing major. That made me want to not put this book down.
Morgan is such a great character as well. I loved the way he seems to be one thing. But he’s a spy, so what he seemed to be was all just an act. He dealt with a lot of craziness from Josette and their pretend marriage. But I loved the way he just let it all roll off and went with it. His character is great!
One of my favorite things about this one is that all of the characters I’ve loved from the other books play a role in the plot. It’s so much fun when the other men from the books threaten each new man about the ladies. Or when they show up to help each other.
The plot of this one is so great! I had no idea what was coming. Who the bad guy was or how they were going to stop the plot.
Make sure to read these ones. I would definitely start with Saving Shadow. You’re going to want all of the background information on all the characters.
I enjoyed this story a lot. The characters are engaging and likeable. The witty banter was fun. Josette was a strong female lead- which is awesome. And Lord Morgan- well, I crushed on him most of the book. (*sigh*) This was my first to read in The Beckett Files series. I believe it stood alone ok, but I felt like I missed out on a lot that had gone on in the lives of other characters. I will definitely have to go back and read the other books! And I look forward to reading more from Laura Beers.
Miss Josette Northcott is happily situated hidden from the world running a school for girls. She has been hurt by cruel misfortunes of her past and keeps her heart locked tight. She strives to improve skills to protect herself so she won't be hurt again.
Lord Morgan Easton is the perfect image of a regency playboy. No one knows of his true mission as an agent for the crown not even his own family. He has a chance to catch a spy who took his brother's life. He is commissioned to retrieve Josette to aid him to find the spy.
Sparks fly with dislike between the two but yet an attraction is there. As both go undercover, they learn that there is hidden depths to each that stir the heart.
I really loved this book. It is full of adventure, wit, and romance. Morgan and Josette had a depth of finding their own worth in the world that touched me. I would highly recommend this book along with any of "the Beckett File" novels which I have read all in the series.
I received this book on ARC and the opinion expressed is completely my own.
Since the first of the series, I have loved reading about the Beckett family. Although this can be read as a stand alone, I say its better to start from the beginning, you learn about the Beckett family and their friends. This is about Josette which we briefly hear about in the previous novels. I was curious about her story, and loved reading her sad background and she turned it into a positive experience. I love the chemistry between her and Lord Morgan. Its so obvious he is smitten with her and she doesn't give into his flirting banter. Due to some spy tactics, they are thrown together for a mission like none other. I felt like the story flowed very well, the characters you could relate to, and a happy ending to make it all worth reading. Laura Beers has become one of my go to authors. Great job and can't wait for the next one! My favorite quote of the book and why I read: We naturally gravitate towards books that speak directly to us. Every book we open, every page we read, it becomes a part of who we are, and who we will become.
The Barons Daughter is exciting and will captivate you from the beginning. The characters are strong , courageous, and even dangerous. The author keeps the secret and action going throughout the story , it’s exhilarating! I feel in love with this book by Laura Beers and look forward to reading many more if they are as clever and entertaining as this one! Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
This book combines spies and Regency! I mean seriously! I was totally hooked into this series after reading this book! I am coming into this series in book 6! So naturally, I have missed a lot. However, I never felt lost or that I needed a lot of backstory to really get into this story. The author did a great job of including characters from previous books without making their story lines too prominent to relate to this particular book. I loved the chemistry between Josette and Morgan! It was really fun to read their banter as they worked this mission. There seemed to always be something happening to keep my interest! I loved how strong Josie was and that she was capable of handling herself! There were several twists and turns in this book which I loved! It definitely kept me on the edge of my seat! I really enjoyed this book and already ordered the first book in this series so that I can start from the beginning!
I have enjoyed every book in the Beckett Files and learning more of the new characters that join the crew but I loved this one and couldn’t put it down!
This book’s hero and heroine, Lord Morgan and Miss Josette, we get to know of them in the previous book but not much to go off of. This book they really shine and are in the forefront the whole time. Other beloved characters barely make a scene, and I appreciated that we got to see these characters strength without relying so much on the others.
A new mission is in and Morgan and Josette need to pretend to be a married couple at a house party. I love the fake dating trope and there was plenty of fun witty banter. Clean romance and suspense in the spy element. Beers does an excellent job of research and adding the right amount of history making it believable without making it boring or detracting from the story.
Wow where do I even begin?! I love this series and although each book is so well done, this one might be a new favorite. The combination of danger and suspense with a clean regency romance had me reading long into the night. I definitely recommend reading these books in order, as they build and interconnect with each other. If you haven’t read a book by Laura Beers yet, grab one and get comfortable cause you won’t want to put it down until the end!
I am a huge fan of Laura Beers books! They’re so fun to read and are set in my favorite era! I love the regency era and add in some intrigue and romance and it’s a hit! This was a compelling storyline and I loved every minute! I’m ready for a second read through ❤️
Miss Jossette is head mistress at the Beckett's School for girls ,.in the rookeries. She was saved from the streets, and loves her job, and the school. Nothing could make her leave, especially not a rake like Lord Morgan, though he is certainly handsome. Morgan had come to the school to visit, and view the fighting skills , and weapons training the girls undertake. He watched as Cossette, and Jossette faced off, and competed. He could not take his eyes off of Jossette . She would be perfect for his next assignment, for the crown. She only agrees to be his pretend wife at a Lord, and Lady ' s country estate, to learn if a famous French spy has infiltrated the party, and is in England. She also agrees, because the money he offers her could be well spent at the school. Morgan is told by several other agents, and his boss the the lady is to be untouched, and protected by his life. The society papers constantly talk about his latest interest, and all the social gatherings he attends. This is part of his cover, as a rich, and dashing rake, instead of an agent for the crown. This book was so interesting, as I tried to figure out the French spy. This book had lots of exciting scenes, as each character does their part to figure out why such a notorious spy, would come to a house party miles from London. It really kept my interest, along with the engaging banter between the main characters. I will tell no more, for it is a superb spy mystery.I gave it 5 stars because I would recommend this book, and the entire series, for their enjoyment . I just would caution that you read them in order. The ending was exciting, and very enjoyable. Plus their was an epilogue from the future, which I always enjoy.
The French spy Genet is rumored to be attending a house party on British soil. The agents of the Crown need a married couple to infiltrate the house party, find out the identity of Genet and detain the spy. Eliza is up for the challenge, but it is too risky to have her cover broken. It is suggested that Agent Lord Morgan Easton pair up with Eliza's boarding school headmistress, Josette Northcott for the mission. Lord Morgan keeps up the appearance of a rake for his cover, Josette guards herself closely after her time on the streets. Morgan must convince Josette to partner with him and pose as a married couple for the party. Once Josette agrees, the pair must use all of their talents with a limited time frame to uncover Genet's plan to bring Napoleon back to power. When tension builds and feeling grow between Morgan and Josette, they must focus on the mission. However, Morgan is unwilling to let go of the most amazing woman he has met.
Picking up right where A Deceptive Bargain leaves off, The Baron's Daughter dives into the stories of Lord Morgan Easton and Josette Northcott. This story is filled with plenty of espionage action as multiple spies interact and come together to stop Genet. I was excited to learn more about Josette and her past as well as see all of her skills in action. I enjoyed the back and forth between Josette and Morgan as Josette constantly tried to prove her worth with her abilities to scale buildings, pick locks and get in and out unnoticed and Morgan tried to keep her safe even though Josette was doing most of the work. The tension rose as Genet's identity was discovered as well as the plot to bring down two monarchs at once. The pace picked up even more with many twist near the end and when all the spies were working together in order to stop Genet's plan. After everything, another sweet and strong relationship has blossomed between spies.
My new favorite in the series! These two will make you smile from the start because they drive each other crazy. They battle with each other but make a great team when it comes to catching a spy. Once at the house party I had a feeling of who it was but wasn’t sure until it was revealed. After that everything was a hold your breath kind of moment full of twists I didn’t see coming.
It wasn’t just the mission that was full of twists. I never saw any of the twists with Josette’s past coming up when they did. She and Morgan are very different from each other but fit so well with each other. He won’t let her run from everything.
Josette is a very strong woman to have survived what she did, but it has left her ready to run when she feels her walls coming down. She broke my heart with her fear of being controlled blaming herself for things that she had no control over.
Morgan is a natural charmer and he is determined to find out her secrets. I loved him from the start because he never hid his feelings knew he couldn’t let her go. He would do anything to protect her and hurt anyone that hurt her.
I loved that no one has learned not to tell Eliza what to do yet. There’s so much good stuff in this one, but I don’t want to give away anything! A must read.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it. I have read every book in this series so far. This one is my favorite so far! I loved getting to see the personalities of these two characters really come out in this book. It kept you guessing as to what would happen next and whose side each person was truly on. Another fabulous book by Laura Beers!!
I think this is my favorite so far by this author, and I really love each book she has written. The characters were great, the love story is so sweet, I love that it is intense, I love that it is clean. This book was fantastic! I loved every bit of it.
I received a complimentary copy of the book. All opinions are my own and are expressed voluntarily.
She just gets better and better as an author! There are some definite fun twists in this book!! And I love the reconciliation!! You won't be able to put the book down!! And you will leave feeling so uplifted and hopeful!! EXCELLENT book!!
Regency romance with a little bit of adventure and mystery thrown in. I loved reading about Morgan and Jozette. Their story had all the feels....I couldn't wait to get back to their story when I had to put it down. I'm sad that it is over, but extremely happy with the ending.
A difficult trial to rise above shapes her into a hard hearted woman and he is determined to make her his own. She is untrusting and determined to never be vulnerable again... and has the weapons and skills to succeed.
The Baron's Daughter is the sixth book of The Beckett Files by Laura Beers. I've enjoyed reading this series. It's exciting, romantic, adventurous, full of intrigue and mystery. Beers also empowers her women characters to break the norm and to find their own strength. The book moves along quickly and is easy to read. Josette gradually loses her "edginess" and "bristles" as she gets to know Lord Morgan. She also doesn't seem as aloof as in the fifth book, A Deceptive Bargain, which comes from knowing her perspective rather than reading about her from another character's perspective. It's interesting to see her change and develop into a more trusting and forgiving character. It was a clean, fun read. I would recommend this book and this series to those who love regency books. I can't wait to see what Beers comes up with next!
Please note that I received a free digital copy of this book for the purpose of this review, however, my opinions are my own.
“Every book we open, every page we read, it becomes a part of who we are, and who we will become.”
This quote could not be more accurate. Every time I read a new Beckett files story it’s like I’m visiting some old family friends. I highly enjoyed Josie and Morgan’s story. Watching Josette learn to open her heart up again after keeping it closed off for so long was a fun experience. Seeing all the gang back together is always a welcoming sight and I love how well they all work together. Scaling walls, picking locks and a adorably romantic love story what’s not to love. Also I do hope we get to see a certain French spy again.
*i received an arc of this story. My opinions and thoughts are my own*
Lord Morgan was a spy for the Crown & second son of a Marquis. Josette was gloomy, suspicious, and put herself in danger. I could not invest any- more time in this story.
DNF at 80%. Maybe I should have read the previous books first, since this one gives no indication as to why the MCs are in love. Nor does it give me much faither in their abilities as spies.
Josette - so, so guarded. And that's her entire personality, although she does seem incredibly, unbelievably good with weapons and intel gathering, after what sounds like about a year's worth of training. Did I mention she turns 18 at the beginning of this book? Sometimes the suspension of disbelief is a big ask. Lest you think she's a fantastic spy, she makes very bad decisions at crucial moments. Here she is, in a room with the spy they've been hunting, and instead of using the element of surprise she basically reveals that she's also a spy and that she's armed.
Espionage, treason, and romance makes The Baron’s Daughter (The Beckett Files, Book 6) an enticing read. Laura Beers masters the mystique in British Historical romance and adds this to her portfolio of books in this genre. Miss Josette is fulfilling a passion in her life, helping the girls who live in the slums of London. As the headmaster in a girls' school, she can give them skills that allows them to support themselves. Lord Morgan Easton is a British spy and is commissioned to identify and arrest the French spy, Genet. His first assignment is to convince Josette to pose as his pretend wife to accompany him to a house party, which they confirm Genet to attend. Morgan and Josette already have a history of working together, but their attraction commonly causes sparks that threaten to end their friendship, the mission, and the safety of their country.
Laura Beers created a unique series around spies that walked among the noble gentry in The Beckett Files. The sixth book in this series, The Baron’s Daughter, is centered on an evil plot to unseat the King, kill the prince, and prepare the way for an exiled emperor to step in to reign. As the story unfolds the complexity of Morgan and Josette’s relationship is tested, adding an intricate level to the plot. The author amazingly adds one dilemma after another, while keeping the identity of the French spy as a mystery. As the story develops, the author skillfully draws it all together cultivating an exceptional novel. After finishing this impressive book, I found several more from this author that sounded just as enticing.
