Cassandra is welcomed to the world of cyber-organic wrestling, where magical girl Farrah fights robots, humans, and everything in between! But no sooner has Cassandra found a new home within the Poppies than schisms threaten to break the girls apart.
This issue took a lot of twists and turns that felt hard to follow at times, but in the end I’m actually really happy with the story they told. Even if the ending was totally messed up (with reason, of course – they had to up the ante, so to speak). The artwork for this issue was brilliant. I’ve loved the color palette since the beginning, so there’s really no surprise in me liking this one as well. But the fight scenes and other…more convoluted scenes were really well rendered as well.
I've been enjoying this series quite a lot! This is actually the first time I've subscribed to an American comic series from one of the major publishers, too. Zoë Quinn's writing shines in this series, especially with her dialogue.
It’s a no-brainer, really–this series has everything I love. Science fiction, strong female leads, bright colours with a gritty realism, intrigue, and cliffhangers. The dystopian world the story is set in is one that is easy to imagine in our foreseeable future. Adverts everywhere you look because you have nanotech in your eyeballs, a holographic AI popping up to tell you things, oh, and an entire digital world, pseudo-superheroes, and the monsters they fight. That last bit is less foreseeable.
A longer review of the series can be found at my book blog: Marvel at Words.
