Finally a book which correctly describes my feeling and bond I have with my horse. I was lucky enough to have lessons with well known Classical Dressage instructor – and what JoJo has captured is so true and correct. Her acknowledgements dedicate this book to Mecca Harris a real life Sarah who was tragically murdered. I found the book so moving, and gripping. I could relate to it totally, the sacrifices made to be able to have a horse, the rewards and partnership you can have when you get it right. My story isn’t the same as Mecca or Sarah, but many of my weekends were spent helping out at my local riding school. Unable to have a horse when I was a child, it was a dream that I focused on, something which got me through the bullying and challenges at school. For me I was only able to have a horse when I could pay for it myself so, knowing I had to have a decent job to pay the livery, and basic care costs; I knuckled down at college but didn’t go to University. I went straight into work at 18 and saved for a year so I could buy my first horse, who 7 years later I still have. She means the world to me and has helped me live my dream. Jojo has managed to describe this perfectly. She’s evoked emotions and memories and also made me question how far I would go to ensure my horse was safe.

Even if you’re not horsey I think you would still enjoy this book as it describes the way of life in such a way not to alienate readers. The book isn’t 100% horses it also follows a couple going through a divorse. I think if you weren’t into horses that you would still find it a great read as it is so well written.

I really enjoyed this book so I’m rating it as a must read.

I've enjoyed other Jojo Moyes novels, but I found this one to be inane. So much of its conflict was unrealistic. Would an ex-husband and wife share their house together and accept a foster child? Would people give a woman a hard time for prioritizing her runaway foster child? Would a 14-year-old girl really prepare to prostitute herself for back rent without even trying to ask for help? Why did Cowboy John smoke dope in a car? How could a rider and horse run along a freeway and jump over a car? What the hell is happening? Why do I refuse to put a book down even when it is obviously a waste of time? At least I learned about capriole and now I want a Selle Français.

I’m not a horse person but have always been fascinated by these magnificent animals and the people obsessed with them. One of the things that worked about this story is how you didn’t need to have background information to appreciate the world, conflicts and issues.

Henri Lachappelle was part of an elite French calvary skilled in an art form of dressage dating back over 250 years. He’s a widow living with his 14-year old granddaughter, Sarah, who he’s training to reach his skill level. They own a horse named Boo who is stabled in an urban area of London beneath railway arches. When Henri is suddenly hospitalized, Sarah finds herself alone until her path crosses Natasha Macauley, a solicitor advocate who takes her in, along with her estranged husband, Mac. The challenges that follow bring out the best and worst of all of them as they struggle to make their situation work.

Moyes crafts each of these characters so skillfully, showing all sides, boils and all. There are times when you want to throttle all of them but then later want to applaud them for what’s truly in their hearts. Natasha was the most challenging to embrace as she was adept at hiding her feelings, presenting most frequently a rather cool indifference. But typical of a Moyes character, what lay beneath that exterior was complex. What binds all of them together, however is Boo, the most fabulous horse who Sarah loves unconditionally.

Fiona Hardingham is outstanding in her narration, providing each character with his and her own distinctive voice and personality while communicating a difficult story. She made the words leap from the pages, creating vivid images of setting, the quirky folks in Henri and Sarah’s world and, of course Boo.

I really enjoyed this story, despite some situations that stretched the limits of credulity (who doesn’t notice a horse traveling from London to France through the streets?). It’s a good tale with great characterizations and I’m glad I opted to listen versus read.

(I received a complimentary copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review)

With THE HORSE DANCER, JoJo Moyes has written a poignant story of relationships—primarily, the relationship of a young girl named Sarah, her grandfather, Captain, and their dream of Sarah becoming an elite horseman with the Le Cadre Noir in France with Sarah’s beloved horse, Boo.

Sarah stables Boo in London’s Sparepenny Lane under the watchful eye of Cowboy John and his sketchy acquaintances. Sarah is introduced to Maltese Sal, a man who runs “things” in this area and is feared by most.

When Captain is unavailable to Sarah, due to health problems, she is unexpectedly thrust into the lives of Natasha, a solicitor advocate and her soon-to-be ex-husband and commercial photographer Mac. Unsure and untrusting Sarah tries to weave her way through life’s challenges by keeping things close to the vest. All the while trying to navigate Natasha and Mac’s challenging relationship.

Suddenly, circumstances have Sarah and Boo making their way to France on a wing and a prayer. They WILL make it and Sarah WILL keep her promise to Captain—she must. What an adventure!

I really loved this book for teaching me about the Le Cadre Noir academy in France. I had never heard of it; but, I was aware of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna and the famous Lippizaner horses. The horses and their performances are beautiful and awe-inspiring. The YouTube videos of Le Cadre Noir performances are equally as breathtaking.

This is a definite recommendation to those who love Moyes books and especially to those who have a love of horses. I hope you enjoy.

I feel so sad marking a Moyes book as 2 stars. Maybe it is 2.5. But I was so disappointed with this book, it is a far cry from the other 8 books of hers I have read.
Mostly the book was too long, and not much happened. The things that did happen I didn't find overly believable and one of the main characters was just annoying and frustrating. There was also some strange flashbacks to the Grandfather as a prologue and again later in the book that I felt unnecessary. Just a bit of a mess of a novel really. Thankfully Moyes has come far since writing this.

Something was "off" about the main characters in this novel. They were not 100% solid or fleshed out properly. A story of several characters learning to trust after a traumatic events the novel takes place in contemporary London. A young couple are in the midst of a divorce when a 14 year old foster child enters their lives.

It is an enjoyable enough read, not just one of those books you want to tell all your friends about.

Nov 5, 10am ~~ Review asap.

Nov 6, 8am ~~ This is not my usual genre, but I needed a book to get free shipping (I always fall into that little trap....lol) and this one caught my eye. When I came to take a quick peek I saw a four star review by GR friend Jonetta, and that was good enough for me. I ordered the book and it didn't have to sit for more than a few days before I decided to read it.

I thought the romance part was fairly predictable, and yes, the horse part of the story had some highly unlikely events taking place, but overall the book was entertaining and kept me interested even while I had the occasional fit of eye rolling at how easily I predicted certain bits of the storyline.

Certainly the author captured the connection possible between horse and human, and I loved the quotes from Xenophon at the beginning of each chapter. Made me want to go read his book again!

There is kind of a lot going on in this book, and some of the details we don't learn until very close to the end when some important parts of the past are finally revealed. I liked Sarah for her fierceness, and Cowboy John for his coolness. But Natasha, the lawyer who becomes accidentally involved in Sarah's life to the point of totally upending her own? I was not impressed with her, I'm afraid. I became very annoyed with her and did not care nearly as much about her storyline as I did about Sarah's, even though the two threads were eventually completely entangled.

As usual in nearly any novel featuring horses there are some unpleasant, even horrific scenes so any reader who is easily disturbed by traumatic events happening to animals would need to be prepared for that.

At first I was not sure there really was such a thing as Le Cadre Noir, but sure enough there is, and I was surprised that I had never heard of it before reading this book. Makes me wonder how many other horse secrets there are in the world for me to discover?

There are thousands of reviews for this book, but I cannot judge this compared to others by the author since this is the first of hers I have ever read. I am afraid it did not make me want to go rushing back to my favorite online bookseller for more, but as I said earlier, it is pretty rare for me to read this genre. I was really just here for the horse.

I won, I won, I won!!! So happy to be receiving this book soon by one of my favorite authors!

I finally finished this book that I won quite a few months ago. I keep getting books from the library which need to be returned so I kept putting this one aside. JoJo Moyes is a favorite author of mine but to be honest, this is not my favorite book of hers. Maybe it’s because I’m not really a horse person. Of course, it’s well written and I would give it 3 and a half stars if I could.

Anyway I’m very thankful that I won this book!

In my quest to read one of my favourite authors back catalogue, The Horse Dancer was next on the list and, I have to be honest, was a book I was quite wary about reading. I'm not really a "horsey" kind of girl although I love animals but rest assured, you don't have to know a whole lot about horses to appreciate this lovely, uplifting novel. As with many of Jojo's books we have two stories running concurrently and we hear the points of view of many of the main characters alternately. The first story is about Natasha and her soon to be ex-husband Mac. They are in the process of getting a divorce and are attempting to sort out their house and other financial issues when their paths cross with Sarah.

Sarah is a fourteen year old girl who has two major loves in her life. The first is her beloved grandfather, Henri whom she lives with and at one time was a professional rider for the prestigious Le Cadre Noir, a French dressage academy but he gave it all up to come to England to marry the love of his life. Sarah's second love is her horse Boo who she spends all of her available time with at his stables, owned by one of her grandfather's oldest friends, Cowboy John. Her dream is to follow in the grandfather's footsteps and ride with Le Cadre Noir in Saumur but when something terrible happens to Henri she is thrust into a catastrophic situation that is not only dangerous for her but may lead to her losing her best friend Boo forever.

That's all I really want to say about the plot but believe me, there are so many twists and turns to this narrative that I was compelled to keep reading page after page, desperate to find out what happened to Sarah and Boo. Sarah is a beautifully drawn character that I instantly felt so much for, especially when her situation in life becomes so dire that she is forced into making drastic and potentially life-altering decisions. I did enjoy the story of Natasha and Mac but it only started getting really interesting when Sarah entered their lives. Natasha presents as quite a cold person in contrast to her happy-go-lucky, easy-going ex-husband but I think she was the one character of the novel that underwent the most change and it was a fascinating journey to experience for me as a reader. There are also some action-packed, heart-stopping sequences I wasn't expecting which involve a horse ride/chase through central London that may not be entirely believable to some readers but which I loved. I certainly didn't anticipate enjoying this novel as much as I did and I think fans of Jojo Moyes work will feel the same. If you're one of those "horsey" girls I mentioned earlier? Well, there's a real treat in store for you!

La Moyes è tornata in pompa magna! FINALMENTE!

As a young man, Henri Lachapelle is the star of La Cadre Noir, an elite group of horsemen in the French city of Saumur. But when he meets Florence, it’s love at first sight and he gives it all up to be with her in England. Now, he lives on a London estate with his granddaughter Sarah but his dream lives on. In a stable under railway arches, lives Boo, a Selle Francais he bought as a colt for Sarah; together they train him and he gives them purpose. But when Henri suffers a stroke, Sarah must go into foster care and do whatever it takes to not be parted from Boo, even if that means hiding his existence.

Lawyer Natasha is in the middle of a divorce with her ex Mac when she finds Sarah shoplifting a packet of fishfingers. Used to dealing with underprivileged kids, she takes Sarah home to find her living by herself and a broken in flat. When she takes her in for the night, little does she know the future the three of them will have.

It may seem odd to imagine horses in the inner city but London was built up around horses and they do remain in the city today. Jojo Moyes’ story is based partly from her own youth spent at inner city stables and a moving tale of a child from Philadelphia, who overcame her lot in life to be chosen to ride for Yale before tragedy struck her family. If you don’t like horses, you may find the relationship between Sarah and Boo difficult to fathom but she completely loves that horse and is her anchor when everything else is falling apart. There were a few moments when I thought things didn’t make sense but with patience, the things I expected would happen in that situation do.

Natasha’s not the most amicable character and you may struggle to connect with her. She comes across as cold and unreasonable towards poor Mac. Yes they might be getting divorced, but they have chosen to do something together and he seems a lovely guy despite his dubious taste in girlfriends. I wanted to give her a slap at several points; her mind was so changeable! Their relationship was a little too much rollercoaster and I think she has refined her writing since.

There are a few similarities between The Horse Dancer and her new novel, The Girl You Left Behind, especially the addition of legal aspects. I could see that the things Natasha dealt with in her job were reflective of some of the things going on with Sarah but I found them a bit distracting to the overall plot.

But really, the most important character is Boo. He may never speak but he brings all the characters together, good or bad. So many times I was so worried for his safety. A wonderful talented and loyal horse, I want my own Boo! Definitely read if you like horses, or even just enjoyed the dressage this summer (although the airs above the ground are rarely performed outside displays by La Cadre Noir and The Spanish Riding School of Vienna). If you don’t really see the point of horses, I’m not sure you will care enough about what’s going on…although this book may change that for you.

The Horse Dancer was a beautiful book and one I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Jojo Moyes really is a talented author who manages to weave her words into your mindset and turn her characters into your friends/colleagues/acquaintances; they really could be people from your life.

As someone who has horses featuring largely within my own life, I don't always enjoy reading books about horses or with horses featured, mainly because lack of knowledge, and therefore incorrect content, on the authors part annoys the heck out of me! Luckily, and probably somewhat unsurprisingly, Jojo didn't fall into that category and the story continued to flow.

The Horse Dancer is a book which will make you stop and look at your own life, at what is in front of you and it will open your eyes to those around you as well.

There are definitely some things that this author does well. I love the depth of emotion that she can pour into her characters. That is the main reason this gets 3 stars, otherwise it would have been 2 stars. This wasn't my favorite book by this author.

This one started slow for me. I wondered how much of that info in the beginning could have been doled out throughout the story (when needed), or even deleted. I also had too many questions. Something would happen in the story and then I would wonder if I had missed something because it didn't seem plausible what I was being asked to believe. There were quite a few of these gifts from thin air that had me asking, "Really? How can that be?"

But even with that said, the characters were endearing and the emotion was something I could believe. So 3 stars.

Have the Hankies Nearby!~I dare the reader/listener to keep a dry eye. This book about a young girl and her horse and her foster "family" made me feel and held my interest every in chapter. Jojo Moyes is becoming a favorite for me. This is the second book from this author I've truly enjoyed. And this one had a horse as a main character who develops a unique bond with his young rider. This is a story with adventure, family bonds, romance, betrayal, danger and redemption. I so enjoy a book that invites you in and brings you along for the ride.
