The long-awaited photographic memoir from basketball superstar Dwyane Wade, beautifully designed with hundreds of photos from Wade’s life on and off the court. "[A] trip down memory lane with one of the NBA's greats. ... For those yearning for the personal side of Wade, they need to look no further." — Sports Illustrated For 16 years, Dwyane Wade has dazzled basketball fans with his on-court artistry and has built his personal brand into one of the most powerful ones in sports. In this beautiful full-color memoir, featuring more than 200 photos from Bob Metelus, who has been documenting Wade’s career for more than a decade, Wade takes readers inside his fascinating life and career. Dwyane moves from Wade’s challenging upbringing on the South Side of Chicago through his college career at Marquette, where he went from unheralded recruit to one of college basketball’s greatest stars, to his extraordinary years with the Miami Heat, with whom he won three NBA championships and was named an All-Star 13 times. Off the court, too, his star has transcended basketball. In Dwyane he takes readers inside his relationship with Gabrielle Union; his dedication to his children and experiences as a father; and his varied interests outside of basketball, from fashion to winemaking. Dwyane is a deep dive into the mind and heart of one of the most compelling basketball players of all time.
I love this book! It was such an amazing read. I have very little knowledge about the NBA, but from media & family (& hello, he’s married to Gabrielle Union <3), I know who Dwayne Wade is. The presentation & cover of the book pulled me in. I’m glad it did. This read (& great photographs) gave me a sense of belonging in this world & the motivation to go after what I want. I learned so much about Dwayne, his career, his life, athletes & the game of basketball. Dwayne doesn’t ignore the fact that going after what you want is challenging, but he preaches how it takes hard work & dedication (which is worth it) to overcome them. He also inspires others to give back to their community & youth. It was a light-interesting read, I finished it in one day.
Mans is the GOAT of the heat, and his book encompasses what pushed him to be who he is. Drafted in the 5th round, Dwyane didn't only evolve to become one of the best shooting guards of all time, but a three time Champion.
To be a good player requires talent. But to be a champion requires sacrifice and character. Mentality wins championships. Dwyane relates his rough childhood in Chicago to the legendary game and how that developed his championship mentality that made the Miami Heat the fabled organization it is today.
I give this book a 5/5 (and yes i am a Miami heat fan, yes I am a Dwyane Wade STAN, but those factors aside...) it was a very inspiring book and its lessons can be related to everyone trying to do anything. A must read for sure.
This was an enjoyable and quick read, and visually stunning as well. Wade dedicates most of the book to his personal journey and relationships, as opposed to basketball. We all know who the player on the court was, so it was nice to see a much more introspective perspective. Perfect for any basketball or sports fan, this one will live in the shelf right next to Mamba Mentality.
This is not the typical memoir I was expecting. Yes, you get snippets of his life story but it’s more like looking at a high school yearbook. The book is beautiful though. I read it in one sitting.
Dwayne Wade was a big reason why I chose to wear number 3 throughout my elementary-high school basketball career. He was my favourite player when I was 10-13 years old. But all I could think about while reading this book was how big of an ego he has. It was made evident by the fact that literally every sentence he spoke about himself was of praise and how he’s better at this or that than anyone else. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to be proud of yourself but there’s a point where it kind of goes overboard and it’s just arrogant and exhausting for readers, like we wanna hear some real stuff not just you hyping yourself up. It was when I finally read “I like to think I’m a pretty humble guy, because I am” that I started laughing out loud. Dude literally spewed arrogance for the first half of the book and then somehow finds a way to brag about how’s he’s so humble?! That’s what being surrounded by yes-men your whole life does to you. Also whoever blueprinted this book didn’t really know what they were doing because they clearly didn’t realize that if you put a giant picture that takes up both pages and the focal point is in the centre it will literally be in the fold and nobody will see it. Wade offers some tiny insights I didn’t know before but nothing that was super interesting. This is a fine coffee table book but there’s no pointing in just getting this for yourself unless your like a super big D-Wade collector.
I mean, it's a little braggy like "look how great my life is and how rich I am." but also "look how damn hard I worked to get here." So - yeah. Wade is all about his life of hard work with a little bit of luck and a lot of God-given talent rolled in. He had a tough childhood with a mother that struggled with substance abuse and he didn't give up.
It's really an inspirational story with some great pictures. And if you love the NBA - you really know how damn talented Dwayne Wade is. Being in the NBA is like living in another country - there are so many things a non-pro couldn't even fathom about the lifestyle. Wade does a great job giving us a little window into that country.
There wasn’t a lot of substance to this book. No deep dive into Wade’s life story. With it being a photographic memoir, it was just him explaining the context and significance of his favorite photos. What I loved most was how he spoke so highly of his peers, especially Allen Iverson. I also enjoyed learning about his many business ventures. The pictures were nice, but the writing was a little elementary. He awkwardly jumped from topic to topic. In the end, it was a fun way to look back at his 16 year career.
Beautiful picture book encapsulating the life of Dwyane Wade both on and off the court. There is some commentary that accompanies the photos. You can get through this book in 2hours. (I'd suggest borrowing it from the library)
I recently watched a documentary on Wade and decided to pick this one up. I loved the layout, photography, and Wades thoughts, feelings, and experiences throughout the book.
I highly recommend this to sports/basketball fans!
That memoir had a faster pace than D Wade himself! A lot of Dad jokes in here, and some pretty stale quips like when he channeled Sinatra saying ‘he did it (retired) his way’. Great pics and enjoyed the player stories on Kobe, Dirk and Bron to name a few.
Recently he gave the commencement speech at my daughter's Marquette University graduation. I learned a ton from his memoir and the photos were fantastic. A fun fast read. :)
What an inspiring man, he is truly one of the top players and top characters to play the game. I love the way he sees the game and the world around him!
Not a very deep book, photos were amazing, learned a few new things about his relationships with other players in the league. Incredible career and player.
I was Browsing through the Library aisle and Dwayne's book caught my attention because it was in the same style Large hardcover book as Kobe's Brayant Mamba Mentality.
Dwayne talks a little bit about his process but he's mostly talking about a little bit about everything from growing up, to family, friends, wife, business and life after basketball.
The book feels truly conversational, so it got me immersed in his world and I had a good time reading it.
This is my favorite quote from the book When Hank passed away, he told Dwayne, "Never let one chapter of his life define him and always keep living a life of evolution."
