First Rule of Spite Club: Don’t fall for your fake boyfriend.

Here’s what happened:

My boyfriend cheated on me with Nick Mason’s girlfriend.

We’re both angry. What better way to get revenge than to pretend to get together out of spite?

Nick is rude and rebellious and completely freaking gorgeous. He's not my type, and I'm not his. There's no way we would work outside of our little game of dirty sex and well kept secrets.

The problem is, he's an addiction. Or maybe a plague.

The more time I spend with him, the more I risk my good-girl image and my carefully built life.

I might want what's bad for me. I might want Nick. And I might have to convince him - if I can survive him.

4 Payback is a Bitch Stars ⭐

It's a bitter pill to swallow when you've been played the fool, and it takes the most unlikely person to tell you the truth.

"I have no idea what you’re talking about."

"Yeah," the man said. "I thought so. Bring bandages, a towel, maybe a mop." Then he hung up.

Evie Bates has just been informed that her boyfriend is cheating on her. This is all by a phone call from a stranger she has never met. Nick Mason thought it was only fair that Evie should know that her boyfriend was screwing his girlfriend before he kicked his ass. Because nobody likes a cheater. He just didn't expect to feel badly for Evie.

"You want to feel better, you should fuck someone. It’ll do a better job than wasting time running yourself down like that."

For a second, I couldn’t say anything. Then I found my voice. "Did you just say I should fuck someone?"

"You heard me. You should," he said. "Hard. Get someone to fuck you until you can’t stand up."

Many would not accuse Nick of being a gentleman. In fact, he relishes in being an asshole. So regardless of being attracted to Evie, he is not interested in offering her his services for his sage advice. Her brand of good girl is not for him.

However, what happens if Good Evie is actually in recovery from Bad Evie? Plus, things get a whole lot more interesting when Nick and Evie decide to enter a fake relationship, purely to piss off their exes. And Nick begins exposing the real Evie. A girl that was once wild and carefree and now spends her days trying to atone for her youth.

But as you would imagine, there little strategy for payback will backfire. Especially once they end up in bed together and realise they like each other beyond a rough tumble.

If you're yet to read anything by Julie Kriss, you're genuinely missing out. Her books always feature redeemable bad boys, sassy heroines and banter that is totally appealing. I don't know what it is, but her storytelling reels me in every time…

It was fast and funny. Not as hot as author's other series, but hot enough. And funny.

"You said I have an anger management problem."
"Yeah. I think you should hit something."
"You?" I asked.
He laughed low, probably at the hopeful tone in my voice.

The characters were nicely written, all in Ms. Kriss' style, honest and relatable. The heroine, Evie, looking for her real self and growing a backbone; and hero, Nick, discovering his vulnerability and passion in life, were wonderful. It wasn't perfect, yet I still enjoyed the hell out of it.

Nick's brother, Andrew, was great and I want to read more about him too:
Andrew took a second to close his eyes in happiness."That story gives me total joy," he said. "I like any woman who can whip a mug at a man's head."

Ms. Kriss is becoming one of my favourite authors really fast.

This book is filthy, funny, filled with the F word, and I loved it.

Evie gets a call from Nick that her boyfriend is cheating with Nick’s girlfriend and so it begins…

There was a pause. Then the man’s voice came again, dark and cold. Look, Evie Bates, I realize this is probably bad news, but I’m about to go beat your boyfriend to a pulp.
For a second, the words didn’t compute. “Who is this?” I nearly shouted, standing up in the dark in my old pajama top.
“It’s going to be bloody. I just thought I should warn you first.”
……
“Yeah”, the man said. “I thought so. Bring bandages, a towel, maybe a mop.” Then he hung up.

Not exactly a romance but more like an out of control train-wreck on how to get revenge on two cheating exes. Of course, the two fall for each other as they try and wrangle out their issues, cuss, and have lots of revenge sex.

Too many plotholes and dropped plot points to warrant a 4 star rating. I wanted more of a resolution on the two cheaters, and, more importantly, I want more, as in a book, on Nick’s brother Andrew, a paraplegic in a wheelchair and a lot of hell to give.

It’s a quick read, and it's free and fun!

R A T I N G: 3 stars to Spite Club

‘What did I have to lose?
If what you’re doing isn’t working, change it.’

‘If she didn’t want my chivalry, she wasn’t going to get it. She was going to get me instead.’

Reasonable and straight-walking Evie Bates gets a phone call one night from a livid stranger – angry enough to tell her that her boyfriend’s welfare is safe no longer, that he will make sure of it. The stranger is Nick Mason , and why is he angry? Because his girlfriend has been cheating on him. Who has his girlfriend been cheating with? Josh, otherwise known as Evie’s current boyfriend.

“You fight dirty, you get dirty…”

Four months into her and Josh’s relationship Evie can’t grasp this new revision when she has tried so hard to be good ‘sensible Evie’ , and all sensible Evie wants is a planned life, to never revert to her juvenile ways, and to make her mother happy – not so easy a task when pleasing other people never seems to be enough.

Arriving at the scene, Evie sees the evidence first hand with numb eyes: Her bleeding boyfriend, a screeching barely clothed woman, and the looming figure of Nick Mason -clearly the instigator of this attack. How had Evie’s life, in fact why does Evie’s life seem to deviate from falling into place like she wants it to? All she wanted was smooth sailing, not graceless sinking while fumbling to strive for sensibility.

‘This Nick guy owned a room without even trying. He probably wrecked things without even trying, too.’

As a former wild-child Evie can’t afford to go back to a place where her worth was lost to her own hands. So why oh why does broody, crude Nick Mason have to resemble what Evie Bates left behind? And why does he have to be so darned gorgeous, out of her league, and irritatingly offensive?

“You said I have an anger management problem.”
“Yeah. I think you should hit something.”
“You?” I asked.
He laughed low, probably at the hopeful tone in my voice.’

After being insulted by Nick himself, Evie and Nick do not take too well to each other, because Evie is too much of a good girl for Nick, and Nick thinks that this good girl won’t be able to handle his own brand of dark and dirty. Perhaps he doesn’t know as much as he thinks? And how can he when these two have only just met, especially in a wretched circumstance that now binds them together through their cheating counterparts.

‘For a second, something flickered in her expression. Temptation. And, I thought, familiarity. Good girl Evie had been to a party before. Maybe not recently, but she had. Maybe a lot of parties. And she’d liked it. Good girl Evie had maybe done a few bad things in her time.’

However, they do come together because of that shared experience, and even though they might not be each other’s cup of tea, payback is something they can agree on. Nick Mason: Meet my girlfriend Evie. Evie Bates: Meet my boyfriend Nick. From here on out, Nick and Evie start a fake relationship out of spite , but the relationship doesn’t last very long when they find something else to care about.

‘So there was one favour I could do for her. Everyone has a special talent. Mine was pissing people off.’

As a self- admitted ‘asshole’, Nick knows he isn’t a woman’s largescale dream, but he knows that his looks will get him most anywhere. He’s a party animal, and a child of wealth…but he can’t stop deliberating Evie Bates, even though he can see the clear differences between them. As sullen as Nick is, the surface is never quite unambiguous, chiefly when there is no reflection to look back at, and though Nick is not a sentimental man, he still has a heart, he just doesn’t want to share it with anyone except his brother Andrew.

“Why are you like this?”
“What can I say? I’m complicated.”
“You’re a disaster,”…’

I loved Andrew as he showed promise as a side character while the addition of his character spoke volumes about Nick and his priorities. He is one of those characters that you can’t help but like, he’s blunt, rude, complicated but just as intense from experience alone. Nick and Andrew have a strained relationship, unsubtle banter, and they just love to dig at each other, but Nick would do anything for his brother.

“Did you just take a picture of me, asshole?” Andrew said.
“Yeah,” I replied, putting the phone down. “Deal with it.”
“That’s dangerous,” Andrew said, clicking away. “I’m very fucking good-looking. It isn’t safe to have my picture out in the world. I’m like plutonium or something.”

This isn’t a full-throttle book about revenge at all as the two main characters just want to hit back in a small way gaining some comfort in it, but they soon lose the reasons for why they concocted this façade because their own feelings supersede petty repayment.

‘I wanted to punch him and kiss him and drag everything out of him all at once.
But the one thing I didn’t want to do was run. He didn’t scare me, not even a little.’

A wall between him and any partner he has ever had, a wall between her and her old ways, Evie and Nick both like the idea of how they can control what is at their disposal much like we all do. They both hide themselves for reasons of expectancy, fear and rejection, and though Nick likes to keep a careful chain on who he is, Evie could be the one to loosen it… even though he might not like it. Nick does have an unknown heart, but it doesn’t mean that his isn’t there – if anything he cares too much not to show it.

‘In boxing, It isn’t always about hitting. It’s about taking the hits, too. There’s a certain way to take a hit so it minimises damage. Your stance, the way you angle yourself so you’re not unbalanced. So you can keep moving, take the hit, and hit back.
I just stood and faced her straight on. Sometimes you don’t dodge, you take it. Even when it hurts.’

Nick finds his own strength in detachment, and Evie finds it in balancing her life’s habits, but the attraction between Evie and Nick is apparent enough for them to ride the course of chance together and get down and dirty. Not that the element of spite played a large role in the story even to begin with, but what follows becomes less about sticking it to their exes, and more about their feelings toward each other.

‘I wanted to break him open and look at all of his pieces, understand them – this one man, of all people. It mattered. I cared.’

‘She was too close. She had stripped pieces off me, and she didn’t even know it.’

I enjoy reading guaranteed ‘happily ever after’s’ because the conclusion is always a definite happy ever after, and while we get to ride through varying levels of conflict and trip over stones, there’s the affirmation that all will be tied with a pretty bow in the end. So while ‘HEA’s’ are predictable and follow a similar mechanical formula, it’s fun to follow a romance that doesn’t end in tears and heartbreak, while kicking you enough to keep you entertained in way that’s nicely good-natured and written with a good humour much like ‘Spite Club’.

“Sure,” Nick said. “He’s grumpy and sort of an asshole.”
“So he’s like you then, except you’re totally an asshole.”

Books like this are moderately predictable; you might be aware of the destination, but you don’t exactly know what the author will slip through your letterbox while they get there. Sometimes predictability is a good thing when you want to read something that won’t put you through you paces, but still delivers a consumable story, and gives you a good dose of female gratitude! 😉

“I’m not nice…I’ve never been nice. I will never be nice….”

Talk, dark and dirty meets curvy, red and supressed, ‘Spite Club’ by Julie Kriss is a short contemporary romance encased with the outer theme of dysfunctional families, but formed on the desire to play the game of cheating exes while not turning out that way at all. This story starts out with the mild floors of spite, but transfers ground into passionate territory when the cheated find companionship in each other.

“He talks about you,” he said. “You’re the only woman he’s ever talked about.”

With a great back story, a great setting and some fun dialogue, ‘Spite Club ’ is a story about justice in a different way, justice that doesn’t actually involve spite, but finds payback by not discovering it, only finding something else instead. Nick and Evie don’t blossom into a couple, they are pushed into each other’s arms, finding a different kind of story that they want to make together. Free of dirty exes, free of pressure and free with each other, Nick and Evie find their individual aspirations in the in the end because of each other and because of how they piece together.

‘The easiest way wasn’t always the best way in the end. We were both learning that. Sometimes you had to walk the hard route, the route that didn’t have any signs…’

Trigger Warning: Multiple raunchy sex scenes, swearing, cheating exes, and an instance where the main character is fat-shamed.

What I didn’t like about the story/concerns:

2 stars 😕

I was pretty excited to read this. I really enjoy reading revenge stories, but this just didn’t do it. I felt like the plot did not reach it’s potential — the story, the dialogue, and the characters were just flat.

I found the h to be a bit pathetic in the beginning. She grew towards the end, but I felt like the growing could have been more pronounced. Perhaps the author did it because she wanted to keep the story short.

I also felt like the connection between the h and H was there but boring. I feel like there should’ve been more spark between the two.

The ending was pretty abrupt. Lol. Like last thing I knew the words were spelling out “the end”.

Idk, I guess maybe my expectations were too high 😞

Cute, but kinda cheesy and slightly unbelievable? Little things in each character's dialogue made me think: 'oh, no one would say this in real life.' I'd point out specific examples but don't feel like spending the time. I'm putting this on my cheating shelf, but it's important to note neither the FMC or MMC cheat on each other. Both meet because their current significant others are cheating on them. The previous cheating plays a large role throughout this book though, so if someone isn't in the mood for that be aware.

Ok, one thing I want to say is I'm all for the idea of the people who have been cheated on hooking up together for revenge. But toilet papering the cheating guy's house? That's high school. The revenge aspect of the fake relationship and making the cheating guy jealous kinda seemed corny to me and not sophisticated. I toilet papered people's houses when I was 16 years old, not a 25 year old. I'm all for revenge cheating or a spiteful revenge whatever after a break up, but I want it sophisticated. Not something that reminds me of high school antics.

The H was good though. I liked how he was rough around the edges, crude, but a softy underneath the crude exterior. I'm wanting to read his brother's story in the next book.

Overall this was well-written and entertaining for a short read, but not my very favorite by Julie Kriss.

***FOUR STARS***

Every woman who has been cheated on by their shitty ex, should be able to have a yummy Nick Mason experience to get them over their loser ex. I adored both Nick and Evie. Neither of them are perfect, and they both have their own little quirks. And they both have families that have their own little quirks as well.

I thought this would just be a short & sexy read. Turns out it actually has a great back story to go along with the sexy side. I enjoyed every second of it!

Some absolutely beautiful, heartwarming, melt in the mouth lines in this one, I read some of them over and over they were THAT beautiful - I could feel them falling in love in those lines.

Along with a great story, decent pace and seriously hot, passionate, breathtaking sex *sighs* what more could a girl want from a book??!!

This is the VERY DEFINITION of comfort read,
Julie Kriss is the perfect comfort read author.

(:*:)(:*:)(:*:)(:*:)(:*:)

I just counted. This is my sixth go around with this book only this time I listened to it on Audible. I enjoyed listening to Duet so much I wanted more from her in audio and when I noticed this one is bundled with the second book in this duet, Crashed, and having credits and also a desire for another read, I picked it up. And yes to everything I’ve said previously, only adding I also now love the audio version.

*€*€*€*€*€*€*€

Yep, you got it. I just can't quit this author. It's such a short book when I'm needing comfort in a read, this book is just about perfect. And I needed comfort again

****~~~~****
Having very recently read Crashed, the second book in this series, I had the urge to read this one yet again. And yet again I give it 5 Stars

***

After staring another book I found revolting, I needed to cleanse my pallet so to speak and I knew this one would do the trick. I did and I even upgraded it to a full 5 stars

4.5 out of 5

Heads up all!! This one is a freebie at Amazon and very well worth the price. One of the things that beats a free book is a free book that’s really good and I really enjoyed this one.
This book starts out with a real bang and I loved it from the first page.

Our heroine Evie is wakened by a phone call in the middle of the night by a stranger telling her he’s going to beat the shit out of her boyfriend because said boyfriend and his girlfriend are boinking. And if she wants to be there for it she better get going right away.

"There was a pause.
Bring bandages, a towel, maybe a mop.” Then he hung up."

Talk about a hell of a start to a book eh?
The ‘caller’ is Nick Mason and he is not a happy camper. While his girlfriend isn’t “The One”; he doesn’t think such a woman really exists, he’s still pretty pissed that he’s being cheated on. After he ‘lays one on’ Evie’s boyfriend, the two of them, Evie and Nick that is, go out for a quick drink. They run into each other again and while Nick is attracted to Evie, he knows she’s too good for him. Plus she’s looking for commitment and marriage and he’s just not into that. Instead he’s all about partying. He doesn’t work but then he doesn’t have to as he’s inherited a lot of money from his family, money they gave him to keep him out of their lives.

But as we read along we see another side of Nick. He’s actually a very good guy on the inside who doesn’t work so he can take care of his disabled brother. One of the most touching things about this book is the love between the brothers and how well Ms. Kriss writes it.

And because Nick is such a good guy on the inside, when Evie runs into a touchy situation, namely the guy who cheated on her, Nick jumps in to let the ex know in uncertain terms that he and Evie are now together. As she and Nick are total opposites, she’s a bit bemused but goes along with it. And you know the old saying, opposites attract, well that’s of course what happens between Nick and Evie. Nick opens up and lets Evie see inside his life.

Nick and Evie are such wonderfully written characters both so very likeable. The secondary characters were great – well, not so much the two ex’s. But Nick’s brother is more intriguing than many a secondary character and I read on GoodReads that the author is contemplating a story for him. Fingers crossed she does.

As I said at the beginning, this is a freebie and there is no reason, none whatsoever on giving this book a try if you like the bad boy, gritty and kind of dirty type book. It’s the fourth book I’ve read by this author and I’ve been mostly very pleased.

I’d met bad boys in my life—even done things I shouldn’t with a few of them,

Enjoyable fake relationship turns into more read. They really don’t fake it for very long and much at all honestly. This is more like two people who meet in a very awkward way, but end up being perfect for each other. I liked Evie and Nick. How they both had reasons for being closed off and not quite themselves, but the reasons weren’t too dramatic. I also like that they were kind of the push each other needs to move on. I don’t know. This was a good new adult read.

This was an okay read. The characters were nice and quite well developed.

The ending felt kinda rushed. I would have liked to see more of them together as a couple. Nick, the H, goes from being totally anti-marriage to proposing from one page to another.

Still liked it enough but I probably won‘t reread.

This was one of the most unbelievable plots. I am still trying to believe that these characters could plausible be in the situations they were place in this story. I just can't... And the only thing these two have together is sex. There is not real emotion that I can connect to. It is all lust, anger, and stupidity.

Evie and Nick were train wreck of amusement, hot sex, and vulnerability...holy heck, I had so much fun! Yes, I wish the ex’s suffered more for their actions and I had hoped for better resolution over some family matters, but overall...this was an entertaining and relatively fluffy read.

Review is also here: https://iloveromanticfiction.com/2017...

Main characters: Evie Bates, heroine stuck in a rut, trying to be ‘respectable’. Nick Mason, the complete opposite, brash and honest to a fault.

Plot: The night Evie Bates receives a call telling her that her boyfriend Josh has been cheating on her – she doesn’t know how to react. She’s shocked, but can’t believe that the good guy Josh, whom she thought was so steady would be a cheater. The caller is the boyfriend (now ex-boyfriend) of the woman Josh has been cheating with. And he is not happy.

Nick is surly, his pride is obviously hurt that his girlfriend cheated, and he’s bad news. Evie has been around enough Nicks in her time to know she should avoid this one at all costs. However, turnabout is fair play. The pair decide to put the rumour out there that they’ve started dating – just to mess with their exes. And it works…a litttle too well. Before long, Evie’s questioning her life choices and whether being ‘respectable’ is really all that important and whether underneath all the smoke and mirrors, there could actually be anything real with Nick.

Why you should read it: This story was refreshing and so much fun! I loved Evie and her internal monologue. She was sweet, trying to do the ‘right thing’ and she suffered from many of the hangups other women do. These hangups didn’t hold her back though – she was brave. Nick was seriously hot. He was so straightforward and cheeky and rude – but it made a very entertaining character. He has depth too – it wasn’t all bravado and cockiness with him. His backstory was an interesting one that drew me in and I wanted to know more.

What you may not like: Not sure – I loved it! Short, sweet, sexy and funny. It had it all.

Rating: 5/5 – my first book by Julie Kriss – won’t be my last!

“Spite club” is fast paced and not as dramatic like others in this genre usually is. This couple is honest with each other, and get a good foundation by being somewhat friends before sex.
They met when their girl- and boyfriend was cheating with each other. I like that there is no OW/OM drama between this couple. Nick is also an asshole (brutally honest so he becomes rude), but not mean that other Heroes can be. He has the heart in the right place.
I would have loved more, it was missing some development for me. But I will totally read next one about the other Mason brother 🤩

- No cheating or angst between MC
- Triggers: suicide attempts off page
- Dual POV

”Make sure you tell Bank Boy how good I was,” I said as she rushed to the door. She glared back at me, and I put my palms a foot apart, like a measurement. “This big, okay? I can send you a dirty text if you want.”
“Are you always like this?” she asked.
“It’s a condition,” I said. “My big dick drains all the blood from my brain.”

Spite Club by Julie Kriss was a quick, fun and steamy listen. The audio is narrated by Joe Arden and Lessa Lamb. I loved the whole fake relationship to make the ex jealous. Its even better when its to make both of their exes jealous. Throw in a hot male alpha, bad boy who doesn't do relationships and the sweet, good girl looking to be bad, and you have instant chemistry!

Joe Arden and Lessa Lamb do a fabulous job narrating this audio. I hadn't listened to Lessa Lamb much, but I loved her performance of good girl Evie gone bad! Joe is the ultimate alpha male, and throw in the whole boxing hobby, makes Nick hard to resist.

Overall, I enjoyed this audio and book. I am looking forward to listening to more Julie Kriss!

Whenever I grab a free read off Amazon, it goes one of two ways. It's either complete crap that I can't read for more than a chapter, or I'm pleasantly surprised. This fell into the latter category.

After my last read, I needed something lighter. Something smutty, but still with a storyline and characters I'd care about. While I'll admit I chose Spite Club initially for the title (because it's a GREAT title!), I found myself sucked into the story pretty fast.

Quick read, characters who weren't stale, and good smut. Just what I needed.

New author for me

3.5 stars

This was the first book I’ve read by this author and I was very happy to have discovered her. I’m usually weary of the fake relationship to get revenge plot cause usually one of the main characters is always still hung up in their ex. I was so glad that wasn’t the case here. Will definitely read more by this author. I hope Andrew gets a book.

I was looking forward to a righteous anger, getting even with ex romance. This was just meh. It needed more teeth! There was a lot of potential for a satisfying story both on the romance end and on the plot end with the ex, but in the end it felt like a rushed paint-by-numbers exercise to get the two main characters in each other's orbit to have sex.

2.5 No es que este tan mal, pero primero, no soy fan de los instalove y segundo la línea temporal, detesto cuando todo pasa en poco tiempo. Lo bueno es que se lee rápido.
