Live in Light: 5-Minute Devotions for Teen Girls is the glowing product of Melanie Redd’s twenty-five year investment in teaching and mentoring women and teen girls. In an era of unprecedented opportunity–and sobering challenges–young women need a voice of wisdom and a caring arm around their shoulders to steer them toward hope in Christ. Whether it’s setting healthy boundaries, managing emotions, or establishing habits of holiness, mums, grandmothers, and girls after God’s heart will find spiritual motivation and conversation starters in the pages of this dynamic collection of daily devotions.

It goes without saying that mothers play a crucial role in seeing their daughters develop into womanhood and into the women, they’re meant to be; especially when it comes to understanding their bodies and men. However, even with this knowledge their daughters can’t become a totally fulfilled woman in the eyes of the Lord.
Since each teen girl is a unique entity unto herself as well as in the eyes of the Lord, the road to complete womanhood entails having a sense of Christian spirituality, a road which is different for each one teen due to their individuality. To attain their level of spirituality, each Christian teen girl needs to embark on a journey of self-discovery where the wisdom and comfort of the Bible will be able to fill their hearts, minds and souls.
By reading the devotions in this book, teen Christian girls will be able to navigate the secular world which is fraught being trying to have a flawless persona on the social media, dealing with false friends [frenemies], and actual dating.
Let us not forget the words of the Lord, JOHN 8:12 [ESV] where he states:
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Teen Christian girls, as you can see have a lot going on with their lives, so much so they feel that they’re living in total darkness, and need to find a light to guide themselves into the world of reality and enlightenment; a light which I feel they’ll be able to find within the pages of this book by Melanie Redd.
Through the pages of this book, teen readers will be able to obtain biblical lesson along with appropriate anecdotes they can apply to their own lives; obtain a crosswalk from a myriad of things in the secular world to the realm of the Lord’s word, a world where one’s faith will provide for a light of resolute guidance. And all it’s going to take is a mere 5 minutes a day.
And while this book has been intended for Christian teen girls, I feel Christian women can also benefit from reading it, since it can renew/enhance their faith as the Christian women they are. Given this, I find it difficult not to give the author, Melanie Redd, the 5 STARS she’s garnered from this reviewer of Christian books.
TLDR: Not the worst advice you could get from an overtly Christian book, but certainly nothing useful. Okay, so every devotional boils down to pretty much this: have faith in God, and then some vague advice anyone remotely around the intended age already knows, peppered with long anecdotes to explain the simplest of concepts, despite this being intended for teens. You might notice that I mentioned Christianity, because, well, despite not mentioning it on the cover, every devotional, without fail, will mention praying to God, having faith in God, or how God loves everyone, to the point where I am genuinely wondering if they have any healthy relationships outside of talking to someone whose very existence is debatable. Now, you might assume that most of this advice revolves around, y'know, girl and teen stuff, but despite reading half of this very repetitive book, I have yet to find anything about puberty, femininity, or anything that strikes me as useful information about that (although, considering what the Bible says about women, that may be for the best). Now, if you are someone who feels like the idea of a god is comforting, most of the advice isn't harmful or anything, just very poorly put together.
In her new devotional, Melanie Redd weaves stories, practical wisdom, and Scripture into daily doses of faith and encouragement. Using real-life examples young women will relate to, Melanie makes the truth of the Scriptures come alive. I wish I’d had this book when I was in high school!
This devo has a simple format: Each day has a verse, a related story or devotional, and then reflection questions. What I liked about it was how it encourages young women to apply truth to their lives. I also love the layout: the theme is written in the top corner of the page, so readers can also thumb through and read a devotional that meets the need they have at the moment.
My 17-year-old daughter ordered and read this book on her own so I thought I should check it out. It's written for Christian teens but with a modern spin - the author offers advice for navigating Instagram for example among many other relevant topics (anxiety, body image, gossip, etc.) It references the Bible (obviously) but even if you are not religious, I thought the lessons and advice were valuable and very helpful for young girls today. The tone is not preachy or dogmatic which I appreciate.
We lobe Melanie, this book was absolutely transformational for my beautiful, healthy, and bright daughter Rilot. She's become such a star, we believe in her and her future is even brighter than her smile. This book helped her sort out the challenges she had with her brothers (Romulus and Remus) - my two sons Crevin and Cargst. Prior to this literature Rilot was acting, I apologise for my words... heathenistic. But now, thanks to Melanie, Rilot has stopped chewing rocks and drinking out of the bird feeder, and we are so happy and proud.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher to review. What I really like about this book is that the very first devotion is on balance. I think that is very important for out teen girls today. As I browsed the topics, I was very pleased with the subject matter of this book. I have given this to my daughter to go through with the confidence that it will deal with things she is or will be facing.
As young women are searching for truth and encouragement in our world today, Melanie gives an encouraging outlook in our walks with Jesus. Melanie uplifts young women in a very practical and relatable way. Her words in the devotional book, “Live in Light” should be read by every young woman! So much to love about this book!! Two thumbs up!!
Live in Light is a fun, uplifting collection of encouraging devotions for teen girls. My friend Melanie Redd writes with the kind, wise voice of a mentor who cares deeply about her readers. She ministers to them with engaging personal stories and solid Bible truths. The short length for each devotion, combined with Melanie’s warmth and encouragement, will help girls navigate the teen years with greater faith.
I received a preview copy of Live in Light from Melanie‘s publisher, Althea Press.
This little pink book is a beautiful companion for any tween or teen navigating life today. Packed with encouragement and everyday examples, each page is a quick 5-minute read with a Bible verse, a challenging anecdote, and a reflection to chew on. The author includes hot topics such as friendships, anxiety, kindness, body image, fear, and bullying—all tackled in a loving, practical way. 150 nuggets of truth presented in bite-sized portions… perfect!
i didn’t expect to love this book as much as i did but it may be one of the best teenage girl devotional books i have ever read!!! i would give this a 6/5 stars if i could!!
When an author writes from experience, the book comes over as being much more real. That is what this book is ..... REAL! She had a mentor (older girl) when she was a teenager, has taught many and now has a young adult daughter of her own.
There are 150, one page devotionals so they are short enough to read before school/life each day. Each one has a scripture, devotion and reflect/challenge section. Page 17 is "Honor Your Parents". No matter "whether the relationship is wonderful or challenging, the Bible commands us to show honor to our father and mother". Many devotions address the dangers of 'perfection'. Don't compare yourself to the 'perfected' photos online. Uplifting as well as challenging. I LOVE the warning not to let tragedy consume your thoughts i.e. don't constantly be watching the news.
Find help with deciding what to say when sharing your faith. What does a cow have to do with meditating on the Bible? Find out on Page 78. Reinforces the fact that sex is best saved for marriage.
At the end of the book you will find the Index of Topics. Depending on the maturity of your child, this book may be more suitable for a child older than 13. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. That has not influenced my review. Thanks, Liz
Live in Light was a beautiful devotional for teens, tweens and their mothers alike. I remember growing up reading soup for the soul books with my mother and this immediately made me think of those fond memories. I liked that it was not preachy, more of a friend wanting you to learn from her mistake. Great gift idea! I received a free advance copy of the book in exchange for my unbiased opinion, all comments are my own.
