It may seem an overwhelming task to change your thinking about money, but developing sound financial habits is within reach. Behaviour is the key that unlocks better financial outcomes. This motivating and practical guide will enable you to identify the habits you need to change, establish your financial goals and learn how to develop and follow a plan best-suited for your situation. Clear, straightforward chapters relate days of the week to the decades of your life – Monday to Friday is your working life and the weekend is your retirement – to drive home the fact that life is short so don't waste time.

In a world where change is constant, FOMO is prevalent, and social media’s influence is unmistakable, there has never been a better time to take stock of your spenditude and put your financial future squarely in your own hands. Spenditude will change your attitudes to money so you can benefit from the coming changes and enjoy the rest of your life.

Gordon and Robertson's Spenditude was an interesting read on the behaviours and mindset of three categories of people and their relationship with money. However, the book left me wanting more and missed the mark in terms of focus and value for individuals looking to review and refine their financial habits.
Spenditude explains that there are three categories of people and their relationship with money:
1. “Spenders,” who love to spend money and receive instant gratification,
2. “Slenders,” who despite have some money are frustrated that they cannot be more well off. Whilst they spend and save there is a lack of focus in their spending habits,
3. “Defenders,” who have a clear value system and make purchases according to various plans and goals).

The book incorporates many useful case studies of different people to allow the reader to identify which category they belong to. Spenditude explores the relationship of money through useful chapters that describe:
- Thinking of life as a roadmap using your age and the days of the week (e.g. individuals less than 20-years old are labelled Monday, life in your 20’s is labelled Tuesday, 30s Wednesday, etc.). This image conjures the frame of mind that you don’t want to get to Friday (a person in their 50s) and realise that you don’t have any weekend plans (person in their 60’s and 70’s) or even plans for next week (80’s and beyond).
- The motivators of each Spenditude category based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, drivers of spending decisions and values.
- The importance of understanding your own and your partner’s Spenditude category in a relationship and having open communication for discussing money.

I found myself identifying as a “Slender," and there were many chapters that did not add value in terms of how I could move towards being a “Defender." I found these sections a bit lazy and generic, with the implications on the Spenditude category as an afterthought. I found that the information was something that can be easily googled on the internet. This includes:
- Learning about sleep cycles and things that detract from a good night’s sleep and decision making
- An overview of common side hustles to earn extra income
- Introductory overviews on marketing strategies employed by companies and how it affects spending behaviours (e.g. buy one, get one half price or outlining costs in terms of cups of coffee per day, week or month).
- The authors casually listing in alphabetical order words that can describe personal values. There were no guidance or tasks on how to identify which value best fits individuals in different scenarios.

Overall, the book includes enough useful concepts and case studies to help you identify your Spenditude type and plant seeds for the person to grow into a “Defender”. However, the book missed the mark in some areas that would be useful for people living in their Monday's all through to their Sunday's.

This book explains your relationship with money. It’s not going to teach you how to make millions but it will offer some insight into how you can unlock the key to financial freedom and security.

It begins by introducing 3 categories of people:
1. Spenders
2. Slenders
3. Defenders
and the throughout the book it makes references to these 3 archetypes. In this way, it appeals superficially to everyone.

The author’s are amicable and ‘hip’, using acronyms such as FOMO and WTF (Wait Till Friday), the latter I wasn’t not aware of.

This book is intended for those stuck in a rut and we want to establish/rewire their spending habits. The first few chapters are dedicated to this behavioral change and the authors invoke contemplation several times throughout the book to facilitate this but personally it missed the mark in uncovering the secret behind financial freedom and security.

It started picking up after chapter 6 for me (once your spending archetype and the motives behind your spending are established).

Was a good book - a bit basic for what I was wanting. Looks at the theory behind why we spend, and addresses the 3 categories of spending habits - spender, slender and defender. Made me realise I was somewhere between a slender and defender. Probably too much emphasis on case studies and examples, where there could have been more practical advice and theory about money.

Book is great to those who want to learn how they behave in regards to their spending. It’s a way to be aware and reflect that the way we think about money which is a bit complicated because it wasn’t formally taught to us. Change has to happen somewhere... so why not pick this one to set your perspective(spending) in order.

Personally, I didn’t learn anything new from this book. However, it did help to understand why some of my spending behaviours have changed over the last few years. As I have had some significate life, emotional and mental changes.

I would recommend this book for anybody who is wanting to change their spending habits , in my opinion it’s a good entry book.

Great description of spending attitudes (spender, slender, defender), opening chapters were interesting, the rest can be summarised better.

Very disjointed read, if you're a total beginner to personal finance you might get something out of this otherwise there's a lot of better options out there.

Quite a hodge podge! Includes chapters on good sleep hygiene, mindfulness, and the concept of "rewirement." It was the latter reference that caused me to hunt the book down at my local library. Having recently retired, I was googling the term "rewirement" for inspiration and this was one of the few references that was popping up.

An interesting curation.

For example, the authors get you to imagine your life as days of the week. I am enjoying Saturday (the sixties) and planning for next week: Monday (eighties) and Tuesday (nineties). Are you a spender, a slender or depender? What's your money narrative?

In the hodge podge there are useful concepts, such as passive income sources. Another one that caught my eye was the idea of a fast (for example, reduce your grocery bill by not doing any grocery shopping for a month and use what's in the pantry or freezer).

Also a chapter on increasing awareness of how marketers manipulate: "anchoring" expensive items near the entrance so other items seem like a deal; positioning your essentials at the back of the grocery store so you are tempted by items along the way; BOGOs (Buy one get one free).

Lots of advice and ideas packed into less than 200 pages but a bit like visiting a thrift store - you have to go through a lot of different racks to find something that might fit or be useful. Still a fun read.
