Heart of the Mountains #7

This Healing Journey

Rate this book

She’s never left her home in the mountain wilderness of the Canadian Rockies—until now. Little did she realize this journey would change her life in every way.

The mountain wilderness of her family’s home in the Canadian Rockies is all Hannah Grant has ever known. Now at the age of twenty-four, she’s on a journey to help her father to find the son he gave up for adoption three decades before. This is Hannah’s chance to discover the life she’s missed out on so far—and hopefully find a husband along the way. But she certainly doesn’t plan to fall for the first man she meets.

Years in the cavalry provided Nathaniel Peak with more than his share of violence and adventure. That life behind him, he wants nothing more than to settle down in the beautiful Montana mountains and raise his own stock—in peace. The last thing he expects is the savagely wounded child who shows up in his barn. Nor the woman he comes to rely on for the girl’s care.

Hannah can’t help but fall in love with the brave Indian child who so desperately needs her, but no matter what, she can’t let herself fall for the man whose past choices go against everything she believes in. As the situation grows worse, Hannah and Nathaniel are forced to make a heart-rending decision to save the girl’s life. Little do they imagine, the choice they make could spell disaster for them all.

I’m not going to lie. I totally cried when I reached the last page of this sweet story. Partially because it ends on such a tender note but also because I’ve loved this series & these characters so much – and This Healing Journey brings the journey full circle from book one. The perfect send-off for these dear-to-my-heart characters, as well as the author’s Mountain Dreams series.

Hannah and Nathaniel have an instant, outward, connection that only deepens to a lasting, heart level as they unite their efforts in caring for a wounded (but adorable) little Native American girl named Itu. Dangers threaten from unknown origins, as well as the sparking romantic tension that heightens their awareness of each other amid close quarters and time often spent alone with only Itu as a chaperone. Their first kiss still has my heart all twitterpated – whew!

Along with Hannah and Nathaniel’s simmering romance and Itu’s serious injuries and subsequent infection, the story has an even deeper, underlying emotion that stems from the heart-wrenching story that first began in This Treacherous Journey. It continued in The Lady and the Mountain Call (Mountain Dreams #5), unbeknownst to me, and culminates in This Healing Journey. You can certainly read this as a standalone but it will most deeply touch you if you read at least This Treacherous Journey first. And while I knew that I would swoon over Hannah & Nate’s falling in love and thought that Simeon and Reuben’s renewed familial ties would hit my emotions hardest, it was actually Reuben and Hannah’s relationship that grabbed my heart most – particularly the first time he calls her his sister. It’s a sort-of “Drop your sword” Princess Bride moment, too, so you’re cheering on all sorts of levels, not the least of which is that acknowledgment of their sibling status.

Each book in this series has a theme of rescue at its heart. Not just rescue from some sort of dangerous situation (though there is that element too), but a rescue of the heart. A redemption and/or restoration of a character’s soul – by a Savior who is waiting with open arms. This Healing Journey is no exception, as the story emphasizes God’s tender care of His children and how He can take what was meant for evil and work it for good.

“Only my Father above could orchestrate such a beautiful ending. Or rather, the beginning…”

Bottom Line: Misty M. Beller delivers a tender, heartfelt finale for both her Heart of the Mountains and Mountain Dreams series in This Healing Journey. Nate and Hannah’s relationship simmers with instant chemistry and deep emotion, and the little girl in their mutual care adds an extra dimension of tenderness to their story. Layered characters with complex emotions fill the pages, and an underlying hum of danger provides additional tension. A very satisfying end to this book and all the ones that led up to it.

This Healing Journey is the heartwarming conclusion of the delightfully epic and adventurous Heart of the Mountains series. This entire journey and the families intertwined within it are wonderfully vivid and captivating.

Hannah is the epitome of compassionate and hardworking mountain folk. She's clever, intelligent, and wise enough to lean on faith, especially when the going gets tough. Nathaniel is seeking a new start and I admire his determination and have to appreciate a man just looking for a quiet corner of the world to call his own.

Longtime fans of Beller's Mountain Dreams series will be doubly pleased with several crossover cameos by beloved characters. Themes of adoption, informal fostering, and blended families reflect emotions and possible conflicts people continue to experience today. I highly recommend this story and the entire Heart of the Mountains series.

I was surprised and glad the author brought a new element into this final journey story as the Heart of the Mountains series concludes. The reunion of Simeon (This Treacherous Journey, Heart of the Mountains #1) with his son Reuben (The Lady and the Mountain Call, Mountain Dreams #5) is bittersweet since Reuben's adoptive parents didn't share the story of his birth with him, and his mother is suffering from dimensia. On top of that, new neighbor Nathaniel is struggling to establish his ranch and has the burden of caring for a mysterious and wounded Indian girl who cannot be moved. Hannah finds herself to be the perfect solution, finding purpose in nursing the child and helping Nathaniel. A friendship and romance naturally develop, and I appreciated how their combined efforts brought them closer together and also bonded them both to the girl in their care. Danger, adventure, and healed family relationships made this book standout among the others in the series.

THIS HEALING JOURNEY is another story in this series fraught with danger, full of family and friendship, some inspiring moments, and romance. For fans of the series and genre, they will find an entertaining story.

I have really enjoyed this series so far and was looking forward to getting to know new characters in this latest addition. I haven't read the original story, THIS TREACHEROUS JOURNEY, where some of these characters first appear, so I don't know if that will affect reading this story or not. I will say I didn't have any issues understanding this story and feel it can be read without reading the other.

I really liked these characters. I also liked the overall premise. The romance was sweet and I felt plenty of chemistry between Hannah and Nathaniel. I also thought the inspirational element was well done.

My issues came later on in the story. I wanted to feel more connected to these characters. There were also some things in the plot and in how the characters reacted that just didn't work for me. I also felt the romance was too much the main focus of the story as well as the little Native American girl. For some reason these parts of the story just didn't resonate with me in the second half of the book.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an enjoyable read overall, but I would have liked more from it.

Content: Some violence, but clean.

Sad to see this series come to a close, but Beller has another one coming soon! She has done very well in her books, growing more with each one, it seems. This one was very nice and good to catch up with some old friends from previous books. Recommended.

“But what if’s don’t matter at the end of the day. You made the choice you felt was right, and God worked good from it.”

The title of the book says it all. This final installment of the Heart of the Mountains series indeed is a healing journey. After having met and fallen in love with many of Simeon’s extended family in this series, we now circle back to Simeon from the very first book as he sets out to search for his infant son Reuben whom he left behind in another couple’s care thirty years ago. With her beautiful descriptions of the wilderness and fluid writing style, Misty Beller will once again set you right in the heart of Montana Territory in 1880 as she lets you see, hear, taste, smell, touch, and feel with the characters. Since this story involves Simeon and his past, it would be best to read This Treacherous Journey (book 1) first if you haven’t yet to understand Simeon and his relationship with Emma and her daughter Hannah. The whole series is quite delightful and I recommend reading all the books in order.

Reuben, now a man with a wife, spends his days happily ranching his deceased father’s land and taking care of his ill mother without having a clue as to his past. He is completely taken aback when Simeon, his wife Emma, and their daughter Hannah come looking for him and share their reason for finding him. Simeon and Reuben’s reunion is emotional, heart-rending, and beautiful. But there is more to this story than a long lost father and son bonding! Simeon and Emma’s daughter Hannah meets Reuben’s neighbor Nathaniel as he starts out a new life after leaving his years in cavalry. Hannah is a capable frontierswoman and well-versed in wilderness life, looking for a husband outside of their secluded location in Canada. Their attraction is immediate but their friendship/relationship is fraught with uncertainty and doubt, enhanced by their shared care of an injured Indian child, and threatened by those bent on revenge and harm.

If you enjoy historical romance set in the wilderness of the west, you will absolutely love this book and the entire series. I can’t wait to read Misty Beller’s next series!

This Healing Journey by Misty Beller
The Healing Journey is the conclusion of a series that I absolutely loved! Each book had an amazing story to tell. This book is about reconcilation, forgiveness and the love of your fellow man.

In this journey, Simeon finally fulfilled a life long dream to meet the son he gave up years ago . Nathaniel learned that he had room in his heart to love and to be loved in return. Hannah had to make some difficult decisions that might put her and others at risk.

There was enough adventure in this book to satisfy anyone's taste. I love how Misty Beller can paint a picture with her words. I look forward to her future releases. I get excited just seeing her name on a book!!! I know I am in for a treat!I

I received this ebook for free from Celebrate Lit to review.

More from Misty
Occasionally I hear readers debate about whether they prefer to read a series of books from an author, or only standalone novels. Personally, I love series—both reading and writing them. There’s something about seeing characters I know and love from past books that makes me warm and happy inside. Can you relate?
One of the first series I wrote, the Mountain Dreams Series, included five books that told the stories of several families intertwined through marriage and God’s connections. Those characters are still so dear to my heart! When book 5 ended, I had so many readers ask for more in the series, I began dreaming of a spin-off series with a very special connection to the hero in book 5. Enter: the Heart of the Mountains Series.
I’ve LOVED every story in this 7-book collection, taking each journey with the characters as I laughed and cried and uncovered their secrets. For the final 7th book, I’m thrilled to announce that I’m reuniting many of the characters from BOTH series! Simeon Grant (from Heart of the Mountains, book 1) goes on a journey to find the son he gave up for adoption as an infant (the hero in Mountain Dreams, book 5).
This Healing Journey has its own leading lady, Hannah Grant (the baby born at the end of This Treacherous Journey, all grown up and as tough as any lady raised in the Canadian mountain wilderness). And a new character, Nathaniel Peak, who stars as the hero (and who I fell in love with IMMEDIATELY!).
Even if you’ve never read any of my stories, I think you’ll enjoy this one. Especially if you love adventurous mountain stories as much as I do!

Her best yet! Misty, all the busy events, travels, deadlines, and new baby anticipation heavily sparked the intensity in the writing of this book! I couldn't put it down! Who would have expected the twists in the lives of Hannah, Nathaniel, and especially little Itu? I have a 5 year old grandneice that is the center of my universe, so I strongly related to the sensitive situation for little Itu and her precious spirit. Loved the way she captivated and bonded Hannah and Nathaniel, as well as spurred Hannah to realize God's purpose for her life. Very well written story line, which held me on the edge of my seat toward the end! God's love, family unity, finding one's destination and the ability to show others that what Satan intends for evil God uses for our good and His glory, this book truly culminates its purpose! I was a little behind in reading the latter few stories in this series, so now I have to to read those I've skipped and catch up, but loved the capture of characters along the way. Thank you Misty for continuing to write these wonderful stories and whett my reading appetite more and more. Praise be to God for the talent He has blessed you with!

This Healing Journey was a wonderful ending and a beautiful wrap up to a great series! One of the many things I liked about this book was that if I had not read the other stories in the series, I still could have enjoyed this one. This author does such a good job of writing books that are part of a series, yet can be read as stand alone novels, too.

The main characters, Hannah and Nathaniel, were simply meant to be together. I liked them so much and enjoyed seeing their caring concern for the seriously injured child. This Healing Journey had adventure, danger, romance, and a good faith message. I enjoyed all of the books in the Heart of the Mountains series so much!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

This was beautiful, beautiful story. I can’t say enough good about it. It was a beautiful love story and I am not just talking the romantic love that grows between Nathaniel and Hannah; but most especially the love that grows between both Nathaniel and Hannah for little Ito. Also, the love between Reuben and his father. It is a wonderful ending to the “Heart of the Mountains” series. Although I hate for it to end. It is definitely a wholesome read. I also like how the characters exercise their faith not only in word but in deed. I like how the different characters send up private prayers to Heavenly Father at the moment it is needed. Not only for themselves but for others as well. And, they don’t forget to acknowledge the blessings they receive and express their gratitude. I also like when they are in the mist of certain issues they sometimes question the Lord, “Why?” But, even though questioning remaining faithful. This book has a lot of twists and turns with lots of emotions. Loved it.

MY REVIEW

It is with great sadness I am writing this review as I hate to see this series end. It has been so enjoyable I can't think about not reading on. This is a series that needs to be read in order and this last book brings characters back from some of the earlier ones. I see Misty has one series that I have not read yet, three books, and is starting a new series which the first book should be out in October. I really encourage you to take a chance on Misty's books, you will want to read them all too!

This has been the best series I have read. Every book can be read alone but I highly recommend you read them all! In this series finale Nathaniel and Hannah share a love for an injured Indian girl that brings them together. Hannah is the baby from the first book of the series...so she brings it full circle. Not only a story about them but father and son also and seeing the lives of all the others from the series. A lot is happening in this book and I could not put it down. I'm sad it's over but I'll go back and read them all again!

I literally finished this wonderful book in one day . I couldn’t put it down . It had all of the people that we’ve been reading about in the previous six books .
It has suspense, intrigue and mystery mixed in with lots of prayer and love .
I don’t tell spoilers because I want you to read the book.
You won’t be disappointed.

I really enjoyed this book which is part of the series Heart of the Mountains. It continues with the same family and some new characters. I love the way that Misty uses Christian references and Bible verses and prayer in her books. If you are a fan of Christian fiction, then you will enjoy this book. I recommend it.

I love it when an author brings a series full circle (well two actually), as Beller has done in the last installment of the Heart of the Mountains and Mountain Dream series. Although it wasn’t the main focus of the story, it really meant a lot to me that Beller remembered how previous characters were separated (and for the record, as she recalled some of those earlier scenes their stories came back to life in my mind as if I had just read them yesterday), and found a beautiful way to bring them back together again.

Although I know most people know Beller for her sweet romances, and I did love the romantic theme throughout this book (thank you for another hunky hero), I think the storyline that truly captured my heart was the love that Hannah and Nathaniel had for Itu. Yes, there was a language barrier, but they seemed to make it work. The devotion they had for this young Indian child was so sweet and heartwarming, that you couldn’t help but get caught up in the story. Their connection carried through to the very end, with an emotional scene that had this reader grabbing for tissues.

Don’t miss the wonderful messages woven throughout the story either. Second chances. Forgiveness. Loyalty. Sacrifice. Beller manages to carry these throughout all the different storylines – finding a child, forming a new sibling relationship, a love story, and friendship. She even manages to tug at your heartstrings while watching Reuben’s mama struggle with dementia every now and then, and the sweet way that her husband and son handle her during her times of struggle.

While I am certainly sad to see this series come to an end, I know it just means that Beller has something great in store for her readers in the near future. In the meantime, I’ll just revisit old friends when time allows. 🙂 I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This Healing Journey, Heart of the Mountains #7, by Misty Beller proved to be a hard book to put down. I fell in love with the injured Indian girl, Itu, and wrapped my heart around everything that involved her. Nathaniel and Hannah entered the caring for Itu with open arms not realizing the dangerous position they were in with the girl’s family.
I have read five of the seven books in this series. My TBR list contains the other two. I don’t want this series to end, but I understand the author’s desire to conquer new territory. I will definitely support her in this endeavor. The thing that draws me to Misty’s novels is her dealings with the harsh reality of the wilderness and uncharted territory. She gives a true though painful rendition of what the lives of these brave men and women would have held.
Thank you for a thorough journey with these characters. I will miss them too.

I enjoyed this so much by Misty Beller but then again I always do.
Her writing so so awesome and I love being taken into her wildness books and not wanting to leave.
Rueben was a fascinating character! I can't imagine being in his shoes! Growing up one way and finding out you're something else. I'm pretty sure that left him feeling confused for awhile! I know I would be!
I adored Hannah. Kind and caring and yes sometimes stubborn as we women can get most times. I felt like she was the older sister I never had.
The one I felt sorry for most was the little Indian girl. Just wow!!
Poor little girl!
I loved seeing old friends too.
I didn't want to see this series end either but I'm glad she has another coming soon.
Fans of Misty Beller is sure to love this book as much I did!
I strongly recommend this one!

This Healing Journey is the seventh installment from the Heart of the Mountains series. I loved this book. I believe it is my favorite of the series. Hannah and Nathaniel's story is so sweet. It has everything I love in a book - clean romance, mystery, suspense and adventure. There were some twists that kept me intrigued. I wanted to keep reading until the last page.
I give This Healing Journey a well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it. Well done, Misty, well done!

This Healing Journey by Misty M Beller
(Heart of the Mountains Book 7)
This is Hannah Grant and Nathaniel Peak's story.
Hannah Grant reined her horse alongside her mother’s mare, letting her father’s tall, broad shoulders lead the way on his paint. The farmyard they rode into was tidy—almost cozy, surrounded by trees as it was. Grass grew in even patches, split by footpaths from the house to the barn and each of the outbuildings, a sign that the inhabitants didn’t allow the stock to overgraze the clearing. Was her half-brother responsible for this sensible management? Or had he long ago left this place, the home of his birth?
How long would they need to search before finding Reuben Scott?
A fluffy white dog barked as it bounded off the porch toward them. It was larger than Mustang, their dog back in Canada. In fact, it was closer to the size of Grizz, Uncle Daniel’s dog, who lived in the cabin beside their own.
Meeting a stranger shouldn’t make him so nervous. Shouldn’t even give him a second’s worry. Nathaniel Peak rubbed a sweating palm down his trouser leg as he tried to settle into his horse’s stride. After all, he’d faced down hundreds of enemy rifles and charged into the midst of Indian war cries and brutal spears. By the grace of God he’d survived. Survived and finally escaped the ruthless life in the cavalry he’d grown to hate so fiercely.
Now, a simple life as a civilian rancher shouldn’t set his nerves on edge. He was only meeting a neighbor. Maybe a family. These were the people living nearest his new homestead. The neighbors he could call on for help and return the favor in kind.
Yet, since the rising sun had awakened him that morning, he’d had a gnawing in his gut. The feeling that came before battle, the sting of goose flesh and hair standing on end. But why?
I highly recommend reading.

The Montana frontier, shortly after the end of the Civil War. An injured Indian girl found in the barn of a single rancher. A neighbor’s visiting relative who insists on personally caring for the girl. Language barriers, cultural barriers, danger and captivity. What on EARTH could Misty Beller’s This Healing Journey have in common with a ministry called Mpact Girls Clubs?

When Nathaniel finds a young Indian girl injured and hiding in his barn, he knows he needs help. He doesn’t realize how he is going to fall for little Itu…and Hannah, the neighbor’s sister who comes to help care for the girl. And when Itu disappears from their care, Hannah and Nathaniel go on the journey of a lifetime to find her and make sure she gets the care she needs.
So why did this story remind me of my Mpact Girls?
Like Hannah, Mpact Girls leaders will do some really unconventional things to make sure their girls are cared for. Sure, I’ve watched these ladies teach lessons or do memory-verse hopscotch, have sleepovers and go ice-skating. But I’ve also seen them go out looking for a girls who has gone missing, pray a girl through healing from abuse, and hike a LOT of miles to go deep in relationship with these girls. Because as Miss Mary always says, “the truth comes out after mile two.”
Like Itu, these girls will steal your heart…sometimes with smiles and hugs, other times with “tough gal” attitudes that make you wonder what’s hidden under the mask. When Hannah and Nathaniel start to care for Itu, at first it isn’t personal. It’s just the right thing to do for a girl in need, a girl who can’t communicate due to the language barrier, who will die if her injuries are left untreated. But Itu clings to Hannah in her fear, and they build a bond that overcomes language. It’s amazing what can happen in a few weeks…or in a few months of seeing a girl for an hour and a half on Sunday nights! You don’t have to be around these girls for long before it becomes more than a ministry. These girls will capture your hearts with silly traditions like the “hug tax” and poignant stories of trauma. My favorite thing is to watch the post-traumatic growth in action.

Like Itu, sometimes these girls are only in our lives for a short time. Of course, we love when the girls can stay in our program and our community long term! But sometimes they move away. (We live in a military town; a lot of them move away!). Sometimes their parents decide to stop sending them to church, and sometimes the girls fall in with the wrong crowd and distance themselves from Jesus (and us). Like Itu’s family, sometimes their families don’t realize their daughter’s need for Jesus and a Jesus centered community. But even if our role in a girl’s life seems to be done for this season, we don’t give up on her. It may be time to let go and to let God, but it is never time to give up hope!
I would recommend This Healing Journey to anyone who enjoys historical frontier fiction. Misty won’t let you down.

Wow! I can’t believe we arrived at the end of this series! I’m so sad to let the characters go!
Still, this is a series I’m sure I’ll read and reread again. I could say it’s my favorite western historical romance series!
This final and seventh book is about Hannah and Nathaniel. Hannah has never left the Canadian Rockies and doesn’t know anything outside of the small village where she has always lived. But when her father Simeon asks her to accompany him and his wife Emma, to search for his long lost son, who was left for adoption three decades ago... Hannah is fascinated by the new landscape, people, and everything she encounters. She even dreams she may find an honorable man among the Montana free and open territory, but she’s not desperate and knows she just won’t accept just any man, but the one that follows God. The encounter between Simeon with his son Reuben is so emotional that I shed a few tears, heartwrenching yet hopeful and inspiring. So much to make up and forgive, but Reuben is an amazing man who had already settled with his wife in a ranch, and a very godly man. I truly loved seeing Reuben again and learn more about his past and his life after marriage.
Once settled at her new found brother’s house, Hannah meets Nathaniel, the neighbor -and an ex cavalry man-, who has just discovered an injured Indian girl named Itu abandoned in his barn. Itu’s care becomes something that brings them together as they help the little girl heal. I just fell in love with Itu, and I loved how they communicated with her in spite of their different language. And Hannah’s sweet nature and kind spirit while caring for Itu was admirable. I loved the main characters, both strong minded, yet kind and compassionate. Their growing romance is really sweet in spite of fears and uncertainties.
The plot has everything: drama, adventure, intrigue, revenge from Itu’s family that puts them in danger, sweet love and protectiveness by the main characters, and family love... And yes, humor too! I cried and laughed through this book!
I also loved seeing previous characters from the series, and even from a previous series book, The Lady of the Mountain Call.
My favorite aspect of this book, as well as the previous ones, is the faith in God. The trust they have in Him or discover after particular circumstances. How they pray to Him, by thanking Him, asking His forgiveness, or His aid. But there’s always God’s Grace and Protection present everywhere.
I think it’s the perfect ending for a beautiful series. I know nothing lasts forever, but it hope Ms Beller will keep us inspired with new series and stories.
Thank you Ms Beller for a wonderful story and series and can’t wait to see what you have in mind next. Praying for you so that you keep inspiring people through this God given talent.
Very recommended story, a definite a must read! Can be read standalone, but it’s richer and more enjoyable if you get to know the characters and their trials from the start.

My review today is on the Western, This Healing Journey. This is book seven in the Heart of the Mountains Series. I have loved this series and was so excited to get the next story. I really enjoyed visiting the former characters in the first couple of books. This story is well written, heartwarming, and full of drama. I know you are going to love it.

Ex-Calvary Soldier Nathaniel Peak has moved into a small shack but the land was good. He hasn't done much to the dirt floor, windowless cabin but is focused on getting cattle to make a go of it. He goes to his neighbors to see if he can help him. He introduces himself and asks if Reuben has any cattle he is willing to sell. He tells him no but the other neighbor might. They agree to go there the next day. When other visitors show up Nathaniel goes home but returns the next day to go to the other neighbor's. He finds an older couple and a beautiful young woman at Reuben's home. The two men and the young woman go with him and help him pick out a dozen cows and a bull. They help him drive them home. Nathaniel comes home from working with the cattle to find a little Indian girl in his barn. The girl has got caught in a animal trap and her leg is badly injured. Nathaniel does what he can but goes to Reuben's for help. Reuben, his wife, (a nurse) Simeon Grant and his daughter, Hannah returns with him. Hannah keeps the child in her arms as they work on her leg. Reuben goes to Butte to get the doctor. The child becomes very sick and loses her leg. Someone comes and takes the child. Hannah follows the trail and soon Nathaniel catches up with her. Can they find the child?

Hannah Grant has come with her parents to find her father's first child. The boy was born premature with his twin sister. Simeon had not had anything and losing his wife at child birth left the twins with the childless couple who helped him. Reuben would now be thirty. Can they find him? Hannah has no hope of finding a husband in the valley where they live so she came hoping to find someone she could love. She falls in love with the child. The girl is stolen while she is outside chinking the cabin. An excellent tracker she takes off after the child. If the girl doesn't get the medicine she needs she will die.

A terrifying journey through the mountains of Montana. God has a plan for these two, a plan for a hope and a future. God has a plan for you too, a good plan and not for evil. Give Him your heart and watch Him move in your life.

This Healing Journey by Misty Beller is the seventh in the "Heart of the Mountain" series but can be read as a stand alone novel. The series is fantastic and this culminating story ties them all together beautifully. I have enjoyed seeing the minor characters in stories have major roles in others and vice versa. This Healing Journey is a beautiful love story filled with adventure and excitement. I love the mountain setting that Beller creates with all it's beauty and hardship. Her vivid description of the landscape, environment, and the characters surroundings really transports you and I found it totally captivating. Additionally, I just cannot imagine the strength of mind and body people had to have in order to be pioneers in a new land.

The books in the series has really lead me to explore the thought of what it might have been like to live in days where basic needs were only met by the sweat of your own brow and the labor of your own self. I was captivated by Hannah and Nathaniel who are both strong-willed and steadfast souls. They are determined to make a way for themselves and ultimately to follow God's leading in their lives. God's path for us is not always the path of least resistance, nor is it promised to be easy or painless; but as we see as the story unfolds, it is promised that our faith increases through the trials and challenges.

Hannah and Nathaniel have two totally different paths that bring them together, but watching their love story unfold was exciting and inspiring. I loved that this story was not predictable and had interesting twists and turns both in character development and in the plot.

It really was a wonderful read even as a stand alone novel and I'd recommend the series, or this book, to anyone who loves a good adventure or love story. I commend Beller for how she can make what most would see as a long series not only tie together beautifully but also remain captivating throughout even until the very last page is turned. I hope you will grab a copy of the book and I encourage you to explore the series (available both in print and audio formats) and Beller's other stories!

Thanks to Celebrate Lit Bloggers for my copy of the book, all opinions shared here are my own.

This book has all the makings for a great movie with adventure, danger, healing and family. I loved every minute I spent with the story and loved Hannah and Nathaniel as they became closer. I don 't want to spend my time on how they met or the history behind them, because that can be found as you read the story.

I do want to say how much I like Hannah and her compassionate heart towards the small Indian girl named Itu. The child was severely hurt and the the little group of people that helped her never complained. I could feel the girl's pain and her injuries became dangerous and there was little anyone could do. The neighbor's pitched in whenever needed and I loved how much they bonded.

The scenery surrounding them was a sight to see. Beautiful mountains and pastures ripe for farming were readily available. The food didn't sound very appetizing, but living in the frontier, you can't expect gourmet meals.

There are a few surprises in the story which enhanced the plot and made it flow with intrigue. The dangers of living in the wilderness was always just a step away from them. I particularly liked the part when Hannah and Nathaniel become captives of the Indians. The real danger was with the father of Itu. He was angry seeing his child suffer and wanted to take it out on Hannah. That scene is very hard to read and I held my breath thinking I knew what was going to happen.

The author fills the pages with details of Indian ways and it became clear that Hannah was being targeted for a reason. I was on the edge of my seat as Hannah tried desperately to escape. I have never read a more intense scene than the one played out between Hannah and Itu's father. It is one that will make you hold your breath as you quickly turn the pages.

I'm sad to see the series end, but the author has succeeded in delivering a journey of hope, love, and faith. There are times I cried and times I smiled as the characters travel to their destination. The faith element was perfect in the story and I am satisfied with the ending of a series that captures the frontier in a story filled with many challenges.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

I have never read Misty Beller before, but that was not a problem in reading this last book of the Heart of the Mountains Series, This Healing Journey. Well-titled, several people actually find a form of healing in this novel of the 1880s in Montana.
Nathaniel Peak is a former cavalryman with regrets, hoping to leave that life behind to start his own ranch. Neighbors and visitors play heavily into this historical romance, with some visitors more welcome than others.
Who will not lose their heart to sweet, stoic, little Itu, both brave and afraid? I wasn’t really sure how Beller was going to play her cards with little Itu, but I thought Beller did an excellent job of creating some extra love, fear, excitement, and tension with this character.
The point-of-view is always third person, although each chapter starts with a first person thought. We juggle back and forth between several people’s third person pov throughout the story. Since I had not read any books before this, I did have to go back a time or two and see who was whom. However, I felt that was pretty minor for picking up a series at book seven.
“Wasn’t a cow a cow?” Oh, boy!!
At least Nathaniel knew his horses better than that!
Hannah surprised me. After experiencing her father’s love all her life, she becomes keenly aware that she may be on a path to disappoint him. This, then, leads her to worry that she will lose his love. To be fair, relationships were changing around her, and she had to realize that the most important voice to listen to was God’s.
”When my spirit has this much unrest, it’s usually God guiding me a different way.”
This Healing Journey started slow, and I would have liked to see more dimension to the characters. However, this is a great story of faith, beginning anew, loving enough to forgive, and loving enough to let go. By the end, this had become a very exciting and unnerving story.
A quote of forgiveness:
“I don’t know what our lives would have looked like if you’d decided the other way, but what if’s don’t matter at the end of the day. You made the choice you felt was right, and God worked good from it.”
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and Celebrate Lit. This in no way affects my opinions which are solely my own.
