Dion Lim is a household name across America - she's won award after award for her reporting and has broken through so many barriers for as a woman and person of color.
"I quickly learned that it wasn't actually about having the biggest voice, but rather having the right one."
And throughout the process, she's learned a thing or two about communicating in the public eye and managing her coworkers behind the scenes.
In this book she shares her most powerful lessons - ones that changed the direction of her career and ultimately brought her to where she is today.
"And it's best to deliver this message while managing to retain poise, professionalism, and dishing out a little sass..."
Overall, I quite liked this book.
"Eliminate your fear:
They pick their noses, too."
It was short, sweet and provided lots of life lessons - many of which I can apply to my own career (even though it so far from hers).
I really liked how it wasn't always success story after success story.
Lim shared so many moments where she messed up and how she went forward after that. It really helped balance out the book.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
I was so excited to read this book because the author, Dion Lim, is a news anchor in the Bay Area where I am from. I was already familiar with her so of course I jumped at the opportunity to read her book.
This book was full of incredibly useful career advice for women. It doesn’t matter what industry you are in, her advice works for everyone. The advice also isn’t outrageous; it’s realistic.
The book is very accessible and well organized. It is super easy to read and gets straight to the point which is practical for women who may be busy with their careers. The use of bullet points in particular made the advice simple to digest.
The best part of the book is that she embraces her identity as an Asian American woman. She uses her experiences to help shape her advice. Some people might try to downplay who they are to appear more credible, but not her. She stays true to who she is. It’s really refreshing to read a professional self help book from the perspective of a woman of color. I hope to see more of this because diverse perspectives are valid!

This is an amazing book that can help anyone who want to be successful in their career - whether you are just starting, fresh out of college, or looking to move up in your current professional role, feeling stuck, or lack the business acumen to push yourself to your full potential. This book should be required reading for anyone who want to succeed in business or in their professional career. The book is very easy to read and provides an amazing guide on how to handle potential issues, and problems and more importantly is how to tackle problems you may encounter and what to do about it.
As women, we often are very afraid to speak our minds and say what we really want to say. This book will help how to encourage and build confidence, and guide on how to communicate with people in the professional environment. You may be in a field that is male dominated and need to find your way to finding success without feeling intimidated or afraid.

provides examples of common workplace challenges describing how to navigate communications successfully.....
such as handling awkward conversations….and thinking on your feet in tough times.
So why do I need this book?
I haven’t been in the battlefield of the workplace for 40 years.
I basically do nothing.
However, this book fell into my hands….and I started reading it for fun.
Dion Lim has a likable personality that comes through in her writing - with an infectious energy about her.
She’s sincere about what she is serious about - yet has a great sense-of-humor to go along her ‘straight talk’.
She’s a champion for women - sharing thought-provoking-conflict/solution’ scenarios that are relatable.
I like how Dion thinks:
“It is completely okay not to forgive and equally as okay not to forget. I don't care how many books have been written on the subject or what Oprah has told us. It's been drilled into my head to try to make amends whenever possible, but sometimes other people's behavior is simply inexcusable”.
A decision to stop engaging with someone who has caused issues for you —may be the smart-wise choice, Dion tells us.
“The beauty of communicating by not communicating is that the ball is in your court, and you hold the ability to focus on moving forward and kicking butt instead of wasting precious time and mental fortitude on how you're going to navigate around someone else's bad behavior!”
“Another nice side effect for choosing to cut off communication with those who don’t respect you or your craft, is that your own energy has room to move elsewhere”.
Dion has great common sense when it comes to people—no matter what our socioeconomic backgrounds are…..she says that we generally share the same emotions and human responses.
“Love, happiness, and hurt”.
So no matter what our race or religion is, it's not hard to find issues and topics that bind us.
Dion explores many interesting topics from….how to stay interested when bored to tears —
....listen and engage with empathy-
....talks about eye contact -
....ways to eliminate fears-
....use communication dexterity to solve problems and get what you want -
....make online life work in your favor -
....know which battles to choose -
....know which battles are worth fighting… and then win them-

Very cool book — not earth shattering vital to read it...but I think women with full time careers actually ‘would’ enjoy this book.

I won this book through a Goodreads Giveaway, and am so happy i did! As a real go-getter in my own career, i found this book really helpful, and agreed with, or learned from most of what Dion shares with us through these pages. My favorite part of this book though was the way Dion's personality really shines through the pages. She is a strong, successful woman who had to overcome a lot to get where she is, being that she is asian, and a woman, she talks about how those things were obstacles often in her career. I love the way she handled things with grace through her career, and even when mistakes were made, she learned from those, and shares it with us so that we don't make those same mistakes.
Really great book- already sharing it with my boss as she is a woman in a competitive business.

The workplace is an aquarium filled with betta fish.
Dion shares her unique experience as a woman and person of color which is a rare combination for career books, making this an important addition to any business library. She opens with her pain, anxiety, and mistakes in a field filled with those who choose to fight others to the death in order to reign supreme in the fishbowl. Her vulnerability throughout makes her stories relatable, reminding me of instances where I felt the same emotional gut-punch.
While I didn't always agree with Dion (e.g. It is completely okay not to forgive and equally as okay not to forget.), I always came away with a truth that made sense (e.g. In lieu of dedicating more time to fixing a relationship with someone not deserving of it, imagine the possibilities of where your energy can go instead!) Dion also made me consider how I want to handle different aspects of communication with questions such as, "Is it ever okay to stroke someone's ego in order to achieve a common goal?" These debates make for a great book discussion.
Ultimately Make Your Moment is a quick read with actionable advice for how to communicate more effectively. I would especially recommend it for those early in their careers and for men to get a view of what the workplace can be like for minority women.
My top takeaways:
> The knee-jerk reaction is great for TV, bad for your career so train yourself to pause. After waiting 1,440 minutes, I revisit the email and 100% of the time I never send the 1st draft. Sometimes the most powerful reaction is none at all.
> It's often best to be direct, using a well-phrased, polite, and blunt (but not demanding) message. Have the courage to face someone head-on and immediately.
> Understanding other people's motives for their behavior leads to an understanding of why a particular exchange is happening.
> 3 Steps of Problem Solving: 1) Figure out what you want 2) Find solutions before problems 3) Remember it's not about you, it's about them. Complainers never win.
> Always ask for a contact and keep in touch with people you meet.
> The key for asking for something at work is to make your request in a way that showcases what you can offer and how the organization can benefit.
> If you're comfortable with who you are and you can let others see that, things will naturally happen.
> Respect for others is respect for yourself. Standing up for someone else is standing up for everyone, including yourself. Empower others to empower yourself.

I’m truly not a big reader on any type of empowerment book, but Dion is an awesome person I’ve had the chance to meet in person and I wanted to read this, it’s such a great book, part biographical, part business acumen, and part personal growth. Women who work with men and need to understand other women better should read this book! I really enjoyed it! Thank you Dion! 💕

DNF at 25% ish.
I just wasn't enjoying my time reading this. It's once again an autobiography disguised as a self-help communication book. If you're reading this to try and see where you can improve your communication skills, maybe pass on this one.
In what I've read, her advice is stay silent, be blunt, laugh it off, do not apologize, apologize, deflect and gloss. I already know all these work in different situations with different people. What this is lacking is timing and context. When would I use each one? How to identify the personalities that you would use each technique with? What to do if you used the wrong one and it backfires?
But what I got were snapshots of her life where each technique worked. Nothing much differentiated them, and only one story for each advice heading. That really helps me figure out which situations I should be using each technique, right?
Therefore, I found the content lacking.
I wasn't getting out of this book what I wanted. Which was: how to better improve my communication skills. What I did get were the mostly good, positive, "badass" moments of an Asian anchor woman's life, which just wasn't what I was interested in reading.

I wish I had this book when I was first starting out in business! There are so many great, relatable lessons in MYM. It was not filled with trite, overused terms du jour!
Dion's advice comes from a place of humility, self-awareness, and honesty-- all things that made me feel more open to her advice as I could see myself so clearly in her stories. By being so open, relatable, and vulnerable, she helps readers find their own strength, trust their own judgement, and her words resonated in my head like a trusted friend's.
I learned new ways to approach tricky, common scenarios and was happy to have some things re-enforced as how to best stay professional and firm.
I recommend this book for anyone at any stage in their career path.

I was in the mood for a motivational read and this one really hit the spot. The author even says that she wishes there was a book like this earlier in her career to guide her, and I couldn't agree more with that sentiment.
Lim is brutally honest and candid in her account of the ups and downs of being a young, Asian-American female anchor trying to build her personal brand in a cutthroat industry. She provides a wealth of personal anecdotes that will surprise you and sometimes make you question humanity! She also provides bite-sized tips and tricks to navigate hostility in the workplace, which I found very helpful. I especially loved her method of "tone matching" to diffuse uncomfortable situations.
Lim is clever, fiercely loyal, and shows a tremendous amount of humility in this book. I really enjoyed reading this one and hope to employ some of the methods in real life.

April 12, 2020Every now and then you need a book that lifts your spirits! This is it! As January was a time where you reflect on self care, this book helps you take a step back and breath! That’s exactly what I needed after the Holiday hectic-ness. With the month of February, I feel that I’ve fallen back to my stressful/panicky ways and I need to step back into my “January” mode.
I do a lot of public speaking, attending meetings, and communicating with people from all different backgrounds. Dion Lim is a household name that has shaped her career in the world of journalism. She expands on lessons that she’s learned and how adding a little sass has changed how she emanates herself. She talks about freely speaking your mind, in a professional setting. I think that’s the hardest battle I have. Standing up for my thoughts but being afraid of what those will think. I really like how she doesn’t tell you to just speak your mind and deal with consequences, like a buffoon. Rather, she gives you pointers and suggestions on how to speak your mind, make your point, and still be respectful. There’s definitely an art to it and it’s good to know that you won’t win them all.
After always reading fiction stories, this was a good break and something that you can keep next to the bed, slowly chipping away at it. The focus of the story was more for women in a strong career path but I can see women and men, in many roles of life, learning from her experiences. This book is purportedly for women in the workplace but I would argue that the majority of the content is for women and men alike. Dion Lim shares with us anecdotes from her many years in the news media industry, many as an anchor. I appreciated her candor with her stories - highlighting where she succeeded as well as mistakes she made along the way, all with the purpose of teaching a lesson. I also appreciated that none of the chapters focused on motherhood. I've read enough books about women in the workplace focused almost solely around being a mom, work-life balance and having it all so this was a breath of fresh air. My favorite chapter was the last, which focused on how to act when (statistically, not if) you get laid off, which doesn't seem to be talked about enough, and I especially appreciated Ms. Lim's courage in sharing this part of her story.
However, the book was disjointed, almost every paragraph seemingly under a new heading. So much so that for many of the chapters, I kept having to refer back to the title of the chapter to remember what larger topic we were still discussing. And after a while, it seemed like the author was highlighting almost every memorable conversation she's ever had as a lesson in how to act or how not to act in the workplace.

Self help books are either a hit or miss for me. This one felt more like the author talking about how she got to where she is and singing her own praises. I would be more invested if I watched her reporting before reading.

Dion Lim is a news anchor who shares the lessons on workplace survival she learned working an a journalist and a reporter. MAKE YOUR MOMENT is comprised of nine “playbook” chapters covering subjects such as reactions, reading body language, sexual harassment, competition, giving feedback, when/how to apologize, communication, when to be blunt, networking, dealing with saboteurs, finding inspiring mentors, knowing who to trust, and springing back from failure.
My favorite tips include practicing “conscious pausing” instead of a giving knee jerk reaction and digging deep into motives, for example, a coworker may be behaving badly toward you, because you got the job he thought he deserved. The highlighted section headings, format, and index make the book easy to navigate, while Lim’s friendly, conversational tone, personal anecdotes about her career and family, and examples make for a fun reading experience.
This book provides great insight into the workplace dynamics that are helpful regardless for one’s experience. There are great nuggets of wisdom for those entering the work place and those who have experience, but desire help dealing with coworkers, moving up with in their organization, optimizing communication, and making sense of office dynamics. I love how Lim refers to the office as a tank full of bettas (aka Siamese Fighting Fish) who use “...snark, verbal aggression, and underhanded sneaky tactics to take down their prey.” Lim gives readers the tools to survive and thrive.

This book serves as a guide to help women communicate in the workplace. Written by an ABC news anchor & reporter, most of the examples come from her specific career, but they can be applied to any type of workplace. I got a few good tidbits out of it that personally resonated with me as far as handy tips for conversation, as I tend to be a more quiet person with bouts of shyness in social situations. So while not saying it’s extraordinary or overly in-depth, it is a helpful book aimed at empowering women with the right tools to get the job done.

I found this book instructive, inspirational, impactful and empowering. I will keep it on my shelf and re-read it to absorb more of the lessons on a different day. While I have not faced all the same challenges as Dion Lim, I’ve faced many of them and been learning my own lessons along the way. If nothing else, this book will let you know whatever hardships or challenges you face are not yours alone. Others have faced similar situations and learned from them - maybe you can benefit from their lessons and experiences as well.
I’d recommend this as a must read to any and all women.

Book primarily about workplace communication. Didn’t relate to the author’s stories about working in a tv journalism stations filled with petty coworkers. Also the advice didn’t fit into bigger cohesive themes and the author appeared to tell stories of her own past that contradicted the lessons taught.

I was so excited to read this book because the author, Dion Lim, is a news anchor in the Bay Area where I am from. I was already familiar with her so of course I jumped at the opportunity to read her book.
