When Matthew loses a tooth, Jessica decides to make the Tooth Fairy's visit doubly worthwhile. Fantastic for encouraging children to keep their teeth clean enough to warrant a place in the 'hall of perfect teeth'.
Audrey Wood studied art and drama at the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. She has owned an operated a book and import store, taught chldren's drama and art, and traveled throughout Mexico and Guatemala studying Indian folk art. She now lives in Hawaii with her talented family (husband Don and son Bruce, who have both collaborated with Audrey by illustrating some of her books).
I know the girl repents in the end, but I still didn’t care for the story. Bratty, jealous of her brother who has lost a tooth, and a sneak who paints a piece of corn white to trick the tooth fairy with. Maybe would have been worth it for a more arcing, climatic tale, but it just fell flat.
When it comes to kids books, if they're not something I was exposed to when I was the target audience, I try to weigh them out against how I feel about them as an adult, and how much my, now 2 year old, daughter loves them. This usually ends up in a 3 star review, because I would despise them, if she didn't love them so.
That's what we have here. In my opinion, "Tooth Fairy" has pretty poor illustrations, a pretty poor story, and the tooth fairy's palace is just about the most disgusting place I could ever imagine. (It's a palace made of old lost teeth. Ugh) I wish I could put my finger on exactly what it is about the writing and illustrations that bother me so much, but I can't. I think it's that I don't get the feeling that any care, or attention, went into the creation of this book.
But as usual, how I feel about it doesn't truly matter in the long run. This somehow became one of my daughter's favourites last year, and gets dragged out pretty regularly. The last few weeks, she's been carrying it around, plopping down on the ground and reading (not really, she's just got it memorized) it to herself regularly. It is exceptionally cute.
So once again, her 5 star rating, and my no-not-this-book-again-please-okay-because-you-asked-nicely 1 star rating even out to a score of 3/5.
Tooth Fairy This is an old well worn out book that my daughter found while she was going through her stuff. What memories it brought back! After one of my children lost a tooth , I would’”sneak” into their bedroom, garbed in a pink flowing robe with a wand in hand. They would sit up in bed laughing that I was not the tooth fairy and I would equally insist, laughing, that yes indeed I was. I had fun rereading this book to my Granddaughter who is just at the right age to begin her toothless years. Reluctantly, I turned this book over to her to take home. Enjoy!
Yes, she's bratty and that's why it is fun to read and re-read this book. *She does learn a lesson that it is bad to cheat - for all of those of you who need that element in a picture book. But the lesson comes naturally, it is not a moralistic picture book like so many modern picture books are, which I hate.
My kids loved it when they were little and so did I.
I don't know that I would read this to a young child, possibly a second grader or above.
Spoiler Alert: I did guffaw out loud at my desk in the children's department when the robots showed up to arrest Jessica for her phony, painted cheese tooth.
This was an okay book, many variations of What the tooth fairy does with the baby teeth she gets and what she does for 'naughty' children. This is one version. So as a parent if you have already told your children one thing I would no read this book...however if you are trying to find an interesting way to explain the tooth fairy this would be a good way of doing it. Although I thought it was kind of harsh at times for the little girl in the story; but it was okay in the end. But some children may or may not understand.
Sometimes you are forced to read stories to your children because they love them even though you'd rather be banging your head against a desk or having a splinter removed.
The illustrations are lame and the story tedious. But it is about the tooth fairy so Little Miss loves it.
Eight robots chasing after the little girl with outstretched hands was terribly frightening to my 5-year-old. I wasn't fond of the story or the illustrations.
