Explore the U.S. Constitution like never before! Amazing interactive features like color-changing words, flaps, wheels, and a special vocabulary decoder help kids learn about types of government, checks and balances, the Bill of Rights, the amendment process, and more! There's never been a better way--or a more important time--to discover the world-changing importance of this powerful founding document.
David grew up in rural Pennsylvania. He attended Brigham Young University where he pursued a degree in Business Management. He worked several years as a graphic designer and published his first children's book at age 19. He lives in California with his wife and son.
I was looking for a way to spend a little extra time on the Constitution while we were learning American history, and this book jumped out at me. At first I wasn't sure whether the layout would be too "busy" or distracting, but I enjoyed poking around in it, and I think my kids have learned a lot from it while reading through it in small pieces. There are a lot of helpful visuals (such as the "balance of power" scale that demonstrates the compromise of the two houses of congress), but the information is organized and the flaps and special elements aren't overdone.
The book covers the historical context of the writing of the Constitution, as well as compromises the framers had to consider, and then has a double page for each of the three branches of government (the "executive" section lists all of the presidents up to Trump). After that, there are a couple pages about constitutional amendments -- the "wheel" was probably one of my kids' favorite parts.
I used this with an 8-year-old and 6-year-old. The older one probably got the most out of it, but my younger one learned some things too, and thanks to the inviting format of this book, I think they will both remember to look here next time they have a general question about the Constitution or its context.
My grandson will be studying the Constitution this year. This is a nicely done book. The flaps and interactive wheels are cool. I especially like the wheel for the Amendments.
I will be teaching some basic civics to my 10 year old granddaughter, and this will be a great place to start. What I like the most is the probing question like “Why do you think the delegates were able to compromise? Now, think about the revolutionary war. Is it possible there are times when you shouldn’t compromise?” Or “What qualities do you think would make a good president?” it definitely is a hands-on book without any bias, just explanations of the three branches of government, the constitution, the importance of the preamble, separation of powers, the bill of rights and amending the constitution. There. even is a teeny booklet with some famous decisions of the Supreme Court within the book.
I’ll be supplementing with the Q and As of our civics test for those who hope to become new citizens. Well test the questions on friend or family. Study up!
This a fantastic and informative children's book that everyone in the family can enjoy! Not only is there plenty of information that is easy to understand, but it's also fun to read and use. Wheels, flaps, sliders, and more make reading this book a tactile, interesting experience.
Love the interactive bits. All the info is presented in easy-to-understand bites. There doesn't appear to be any political bias, either, which is fantastic (the meaning of the 2nd amendment is presented properly, etc.).
