This is a very straightforward novella about a young man who returns home after serving three tours in Afghanistan only to find out that his younger sister has become hooked on drugs and is missing. She’s later found dead and the police classify her death as a suicide but the narrator (Leroy) is unwilling to accept that explanation. The text flashes back and forth in time (there’s more telling than showing) and the reader finds out that Leroy has made himself an invaluable member at a BDSM club and it’s the same one that his sister worked in before her untimely death.

▣ First-person POV, one narrator, and a very simplistic writing style. This story continues on to another book but it’s the writing style that just didn’t work for me.

Longing (a Prequel Novella) is a great background story and character study of Leroy, a supporting character in a latter book. It was a super quick read and gave me, as a reader, more of an investment in & understanding of Leroy in the main work Control (The Mystery of Landon Miller Book 1).

Fans of R.M. Gauthier’s “Control” will appreciate this short but fascinating back story about Landon Miller’s Chief of Security, Leroy. This flashback into Leroy’s past is an examination uncovers his main motive for becoming Miller’s protective head bouncer, investigator, monitor, and all-around dependable man. Gauthier takes us through a likely series of events that at first seem predictable, but a few surprise twists and turns keep the reader guessing as Leroy searches for his missing sister on the seedier side of town. Eventually, his search comes to an end, and even here Gauthier’s brilliance for keeping us in the dark right to the very end shines through. We suddenly find Leroy in the employ of the enigmatic Mr. Miller, playing host to Lexi Ross—the woman who seems to elicit more than a passing interest in Leroy’s Boss. Gauthier is a master of the cliffhanger, and in that regard, “Longing” effectively cuts off here, where “Control” begins. If anything, this novella is much too brief, and one thing’s for certain—Gauthier’s short story will have you “Longing” for much, much more!

Longing is a prequel to The Mystery of Landon Miller series, in which Gauthier gives us a peek at how everyone’s favorite Guy Friday ended up with the job of a lifetime: working for Landon Miller, himself.

In this short story, Leroy leaves the desolation of war only to find more misery waiting for him at home. His sister is missing, and Leroy will move heaven and earth to bring her home again. Along the way, Leroy discovers there is a whole lot of evil out there, and the deeper he digs, the dirtier it gets.

Once again, Gauthier has created a story where anything can and does happen, bringing life and soul to characters who we, as readers, feel connected to. Whether or not you’ve read “Control” and “Bound”, “Longing” is one short story you won’t want to miss.

Ticket for Admission

Having previously read R.M. Gauthier’s full-length, Suspense-Mystery Thrillers in the order intended—‘first, Control,’ and then ‘Bound’—I can honestly say it doesn’t matter. Her novella, ‘Longing,’ suffices either as a prequel appetizer, an in-between-novels lunch, or after-dinner mint. In fact, my eureka moment derived from meeting certain unsavory characters, one whom I’d first encountered at the very end of ‘Control,’ and the others, head-on in ‘Bound’.

An admirer of Leroy in both novels, while always longing for more about what makes Landon Miller’s head of security tick, this novella provided the ticket for admission needed to get my foot in the door to find out through Leroy’s first-person narrative backstory.

The author stays true to the genre of Suspense -Mystery Thriller by engaging the reader full tilt boogie as she provides the subtlest of clues, detailed body language, and essential dialogue to drive the plot forward.

Although my ticket for admission didn’t get me past the door into an exclusive club to see what goes on inside, I satisfied my longing by reading ‘Control’.

Longing - Glad to get background on Leroy, I found him an interesting character in Control and Bound. The author tells interesting, suspenseful, action-packed stories, but does have a problem with grammar, word usage and punctuation. For those who care, she doesn't use vulgar language, and other than one sex scene in Control, there's no sex. There's improvement between Longing and Bound, and I hope to see Leroy and Landon in future books. I was put on a mailing list and received this short story.

Control #1 - Not into BDSM, which doesn't get too graphic continuously, just in one scene. Didn't care for Lexi, a weak woman making bad decisions. I didn't trust Landon, a damaged character with more going on than the story lets surface. The story did get interesting, filled with suspense. By the way it ends, I'm assuming there's more to come. Disregarding the subject matter, Control was actually hard to put down once started, even though the first few chapters were slow going. I contacted the author to review her books, not knowing what the book was about.

Bound #2 - A suspenseful, action-packed, humorous continuation of Control. The beginning is slow, but the pace picks up quickly and keeps it up. Lexi redeems herself, and along with Landon, is full of surprises. Leroy is a great supporting character. If you like stories about the Mafia, read this. For those who care, there's infrequent cursing and no sex. Hopefully, we'll see more of Leroy and Landon; I get the impression there's more to their story.

Freedom #3 - Another suspenseful, intriguing continuation of Control and Bound, which must be read before reading this book. Well written, suspense filled and intriguing and told by Landon, we find out the rest of the story. Ms. Gauthier has done wonderful job with her descriptions, planning and combining bits of Control and Bound as needed; as well as the gamut of emotions experienced. A very addicting, substantial series that must be read. I contacted the author to review her books and luckily it was Landon's story.

The Christmas Miracle Series are a group of short stories concerning a man discovering love and his adaption to the changes that love brings to his life. The stories are interesting and quickly read, although I would have preferred a complete book. On Easter has a cliffhanger ending, but by this book's release, the reader knows there's more to the story yet to come.

Once Upon a Fabulous Time – A collection of stories from six authors. Five of these authors are new to me, but I enjoyed most of the stories. Most of the stories need editing, mainly wrongly used words or spelling errors. I contacted Ms. Gauthier many books ago to review her books.

R.M. Gauthier, Millie’s Story - This book is written with a librarian, the main character, reading mysteriously appearing, demanding-to-be-read books that each contain a fairy tale or story. As the story continues, in betwixt the mysterious books, the librarian grows more interesting, as does her story, and she has a dilemma, which will end her happy existence at the library that she built up over the years. I’ll let you discover which fairy tale she represents.

This character-driven novella is Renee Gauthier’s début publication and features a minor character from her full length novel ‘Control’.

She has tackled the difficult task of writing from the first person perspective; this device can be restrictive but I believe Gauthier handles it well. ‘Longing’ moves along at a fast pace with a good back-story which quickly draws the reader in.

The descriptive scenes are well-written and conjure up a vivid picture of corruption, exploitation and vulnerability. The main character is strong and decisive but at the same time sensitive and caring and the reader can empathise with his predicament.

The plot builds nicely but then seems to plateau with a conclusion never quite materialising, leaving me feeling a little disappointed.

If you are looking for an entertaining action story, this novella would be well worth reading. There is much to admire in this work but for me, it promises a bit more than it delivers. However, I believe this author is one to watch in the future and I award ‘Longing’ a creditable three and a half stars (unfortunately I can't give half stars on Goodreads.)

This novella acts as the backdrop to the real action that will take place in RM Gauthier's next novel . As a prequel, it fills the reader in on the background of the main character - Leroy. Ex- Special Forces, he returns home from duty to find his sister, Tanya has dropped out of college and chosen a life on the streets. We follow Leroy as he searches for his sister and enters the underground world of private membership clubs.
Well written introduction that leaves the reader looking for more.

A tasty appetizer of a prequel novella.

"Longing" compelled me to find out the answers to the mystery of what happened to Leroy's sister. Leroy is a thoughful, likeable character. I liked the pacing and felt that Gauthier has a promising story to tell in the novel that was just released, "Control".

Backstory about Leroy. For a special forces type, he certainly lost his edge quickly.

Tragic.

I received a copy of this book as a gift.  This is my honest review.

I just got through reading Gauthier’s Longing. It was a quick read with a lot of suspense building, but nothing happened. However, I liked the author’s writing style, her characters were well developed and he story moved along at a nice pace. I’m only hoping this was the intro to an interesting suspense thriller because it ended on a steep cliff-hanger.

Actually, it's not even a true cliffhanger ending. There's no ending at all. The last part is just... gone. There's an epilogue, but that just continues the story so I assume it was mislabeled.Intentionally. In effect, there's no resolution to the story. It's just chopp- (see what I did there? didn't like it, did you?)

On to the actual story (what there was of it). Not much character development, but there never is in a novella, so that was fine. The plot was a little scattered, in that parts of it didn't quite make sense to me (just one point: he waited several years to get into that club after his sister was murdered?), but it was interesting.

The real stumbling block was the nuts and bolts - punctuation, grammar - the boring stuff that you ignore when it's done right but you really notice when it isn't. I confess that I've never seen "night and shining armor" before. Run-on sentences, misused punctuation, misused words, mistakes like that kept pulling me out of the story. A few aren't a problem. When they're on every page, they overtake the story, which is what happened here.

promising plot, but this really deserves the polish of a good editor. I hope it gets one.
