Across five centuries and two continents comes the story of a love so strong it cannot be destroyed by death or conquered by time. Fleeing heartbreak in America, Aubrey Cumming comes to the Scottish Highlands and finds an ancient family and a new chance at love…if she can stay alive long enough to break the Comyn’s curse.
Thank you to the publisher for sending me this free copy my way for a review!
The Comyn's Curse follows Aubrey who inelegantly got dumped by her fiancé over text. With her broken heart, she decides to go to Scotland and discover her family's heritage. She's told of this curse befallen two clans, The Comyn's and The MacKintosh, and the only way to destroy it is by falling in love with a MacKintosh (the enemy clan to the Comyn's).
When I learned that this book is perfect for fans of Outlander and has paranormal aspects to it, I knew I had to read it. The gorgeous descriptions of the setting were amazing. The author really knows how to transport you to Scotland and its highlands. I absolutely loved the historical part of Scotland: the Jacobite, Culloden, and many more. There's a lot of Outlander references which I didn't mind at all since I'm a fan and I could totally understand the MC for falling for one of those gorgeous men in a kilt.
When Aubrey goes there she finds herself in the middle of a love triangle, political intrigue with some dash of paranormal. We also have legends and ghosts. I also got some gothic vibe from it. It was very mysterious and the eerie atmosphere kept me hooked. We have everything that I love in a book: romance, paranormal, and mystery. However, I did have a hard time getting into it in the beginning and I can't put my finger on why. I also don't like love triangles so I was a bit annoyed with it since I knew from the beginning who was "The One" for Aubrey ahahah. I kinda guessed the twist in the end but not everything! The ending really shocked me because they were some things that I did not expect and I really enjoyed that. I love that we get to see Aubrey interacting with her friends. Their relationship dynamic is adorable and I loved that they were here supporting her. I liked that the story was flipping between past and present. We got a glimpse of how things were before the curse began.
Overall, this book was an enjoyable and fast-paced story! I liked the friendship dynamic and I loved how I felt like I was in Scotland. If you're a fan of Outlander, you should definitely pick it up!
I was given a copy of this book for a review from Net Galley, thanks. This book is written from two different times, past and now. Back in 1442 Ailith, the daughter of a man from clan Comyn discovers a plan to murder the clan of her lover, clan McKintosh. She informs her lover, so when the massacre starts, it is the Comyn's who are killed. Her father chases her to the top of a tower, where as she tries to go over the wall chops off both her hands with his sword and curses her. No McKintosh will find true love until a Comyn and McKintosh fall in love. Aubrey has just been dumped by her finace in New Jersey...by a text, no less. A friend invites her to Scotland and she finds herself in the middle of trying to break the curse. Will she suceed? I have always been interested in the battles of Scotland and the author does a good job of describing what happened and also giving descriptions of various landmarks, castles and legends.
cute story... Aubrey Cumming moved from college to a small town in NJ with her fiancé. She never felt welcomed by any of the family members. The fiancé dumps her and she doesn't know where to turn. An older Scottish man took her under his wing when she first arrived and is here again to do so....
He has her travel to Scotland to help break the curse of an ancient family and a love story.
The Comyn's Curse is a modern-day paranormal romance cross-genre novel that includes elements of mystery and historical fiction. The book opens with historical fiction set in Scotland, 1442. This prologue sets the stage for the purpose of the modern-day main character's journey throughout the story, expertly providing just enough detail to propel us forward. It is beautifully written, introducing a tale of love, a warning that results in betrayal, and a cliff hanger that leaves the reader longing for more.
Enter, Aubrey Cumming, and the worst text of her life, "Im sorry im in love with someone else." As if a text message breakup wasn't bad enough, her fiancé, Marc Russo, can't even raise up enough respect to proffer his dismissal with proper grammar. She put everything she had into this relationship, even to the point of moving to his small hometown in New Jersey. Now she sits in agony, reading a series of poorly written text messages that pronounce her a free entity, whether she likes it or not.
Enter her stalwart companions, Kate and Fitz, and large scoops of Rocky Road ice cream, prescribed by Nurse Fitz. After sobbing out her woes, she remembers that Angus, her employer at a local bookstore, would be worried about her (having not arrived to work her shift). All three of these characters will play significant roles in her life journey from this point forward, but I won't go into detail as too much said could spoil your fun!
A paranormal experience with an old tome in Angus' Auld Books bookstore, leads to information about a family curse, (The Comyn's Curse). As a result, she and Angus decide that she must make a trip to Scotland to break it.
MacKinnon's characters are well-developed and believable, both modern-day and historical. The reader can't come away from this experience, not having made new friends! By the end of the book, the reader is keen to follow Aubrey and her friends into the next adventure in The Piper's Warning, Book 2 of the Highland Spirits series.
MacKinnon, a writer since the tender age of eight, spends one month each year in the Scottish Highlands, which effectively allows her to write her adventures in this setting with credibility. It is evident that she loves the area, and her deep respect for the people and history there come across in her writing.
And did I mention that Aubrey and her friends are fans of the Starz Outlander series? You will find mentions and references interspersed throughout MacKinnon's story.
I highly recommend The Comyn's Curse to paranormal, romance, mystery, and historical fiction readers. I also believe that any other curious souls who love a well-written tale with a bit of love, history, mystery, or suspense would genuinely enjoy this book. MacKinnon crosses genres with grace and style, and it would be a shame to miss out on an excellent adventure!

THE COMYN’S CURSE by M MacKinnon bridges two fates across five centuries. One fated to a curse, the other fated to break it. Aubrey, running from heartbreak and disappointment, chases her heritage into the lands and legends of Scotland under the behest of the “elusive and mysterious” Angus Mackintosh, who has more to gain than lose from Aubrey’s adventure. Under the guidance of Nessie and her new housemates, Aubrey repairs her broken heart among their unusual comradery. Their humor and banter are surpassed only by Kate and Fitz, Aubrey’s two best friends. On the heels of an anticipated marriage, the three women sight-see across Scotland, encounter unexpected danger, and evaluate two new men in Aubrey’s life, neither of which seems destined to break the curse but could break her heart once again.
MacKinnon immerses the reader into the enchanting highlands without drowning him/her in an incoherent world that is difficult to understand. On multiple occasions, Aubrey, along with Fitz and Kate, experiences a true Scottish breakfast; and, their various reactions are priceless. Angus’ thick Scottish dialect is easier to understand than anticipated. He is both endearing and lovable. I half-expected him to produce a wand revealing that his mysterious air was attributable to his magical qualities. The pacing and tension are perfect. The humor is believable and the characters are exceptional. I do wish the men weren’t so dashingly handsome, though. I wanted to keep one for myself.
THE COMYN’S CURSE is filled with ghosts, legends, loyalty, and friendship. Can a curse be broken with love as it seems love is what binds it?
Aubrey Cumming decides to visit Scotland as a way to forget the man who dumped her—by text—six months before their wedding. The crusty Scot who runs the local bookstore encouraged her by spinning a tale of love, deceit, and murder, all tied to a six-hundred-year-old curse. Aubrey doesn’t place much stock in the tale but is drawn to the romance of the highlands, the scene of so many stories of heroism and black betrayal. The bookseller, Angus, also points out that her last name, Cumming, is the Anglicized version of Comyn, the name of one of the clans in his story. Once in Scotland, Aubrey must deal with her own fear of another broken heart when a charming Scottish history teacher attracts her romantic attention. Mackinnon deftly weaves the 15th Century tale into modern Scotland and gives us a modern tale of corporate deceit and greed. The characters are lively and believable, the plot engaging, and the final scenes forced me to stay up later than I intended to find out Aubrey’s fate.
I am *so* glad I read this book. I am always nervous when I'm starting a new-to-me author but this book was cute and escapist in all my favorite ways. The heroine, Aubrey, has just been inelegantly dumped, when through a series of events, she decides to temporarily move to Scotland. Already, I'm in love. While there, she becomes part of a love triangle, ongoing political intrigue, and a crucial part of freeing the spirit inhabiting a nearby castle. As Aubrey's story unfolds, we also flash back to the life of the ghost centuries before. Aubrey is a descendant of the same clan and the supernatural begins to weave its way into her life. This is also a love story of Scotland. It is clear that the author is very familiar with the country (honestly, maybe lives there) and it was so wonderful reading her descriptions of the towns, history, and nature. There were a few plot points I still had questions about when I finished, but it was easy enough to glaze over those.
The Comyn's Curse is a paranormal romance novel that takes the reader on a journey with Aubrey Cumming as she leaves the United States to travel to the Scottish Highlands. She's nursing a newly broken heart, after a break-up by text. The modern day story is complimented by sections of historical fiction with its own love story for the ages. The curse ties both times together, and it's up to Aubrey to try and break it.
Audrey was an easy character to like in the story. I felt for her as she dealt with the feelings of heartbreak as she is forced to cope with the break-up that she wasn't prepared for. Her excitement to explore a new place comes through clearly, and I think it's an emotion that we've all felt when going to a new place or embarking on an adventure. Her friends, Kate and Fitz, are great compliments to Audrey, and I loved the little references to Diana Gabaldon's Outlander scattered throughout the book by all three of them.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, the first in a series from M. MacKinnon. I thought there were times when the pacing was off, but it wasn't as distracting as it could have been. The settings were vivid, and I thought all of the characters were easy to picture in my mind. MacKinnon is able to immerse the reader into the beauty of the Scottish highlands.
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the digital copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
The Comyn's Curse is an easy, multi-genre read packed with action, drama, historical fiction, pop culture references, some romance, all mingled with speckles of true Scottish history. The way the author described Scotland really made me feel like I was there! I adored the descriptions of Scottish scenery and historical events.
There was a lot happening in this story so I was interested to see how it would all tie together in the end. However, I was left with questions concerning some of the plot points.
But now I really want to go to Scotland. And I may just try haggis while I'm there?? Maybe...
Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy of this book!
What a really fun read! There are so many fresh and engaging characters to be met in the pages of the book and there's something here for everyone to like. We've got romance with all the delicious layers that make for a satisfactory reading experience. We've got sabotage and political intrigue. We've got history and mystery. We've got humor. And we've got travel and gorgeous scenery. Best of all, they all weave together to produce a marvelous story and a really fun read.
And this is just the beginning. It looks like there's more to come and I'm looking forward to it!
MacKinnon weaves a wonderful story where treachery in the 1400s has a chance to be corrected in the present. When Aubrey is jilted by her fiance, she learns that she is the key to correcting an ancient wrong and she is is persuaded to go to Scotland. There she encounters her ancestral ghost and finds herself falling in love with two men. There is plenty of mystery intertwined with the history and sights of Scotland. I enjoyed this tale and look forward to book 2.
This was too much of an Outlander fan fiction, with cringy references to Outlander, and a bit too much Gaelic to start with.
Aubrey finds herself at the bad end of a love triangle and flees to Scotland where she goes back in time and falls in love, and eventually entangles herself in another love triangle.
I'm sure this is a great read for people who like the Outlander vibe, but for me, I prefer my Outlander in Outlander. And I'm not such a fan of romance. This simply isn't the book for me.
I would like to thank DartFrog Plus and the Netgalley website for allowing me to read this book.
We find Aubrey Cumming who goes to Scotland to escape a heartbreak in the United States. She will find the top an old family and maybe love. If she stays alive a long time to break the curse of the Comyn's.
A book read in one go so much I was hooked on the story so gripping, captivating, addictive, filled with suspense and twists with very endearing characters. I can't wait to discover the rest of the book because I love the author's writing so much.
The Comyn's Curse was a good read, with an interesting mythical curse at its center. My only complaint was that much of the dialogue felt contrived, and the heroine of the book often had a 'woe-is-me' quality that made her difficult to root for at times. That said, I love the history of Scotland and Scottish lore woven through the book, and I appreciate the clear level of research that MacKinnon has put into crafting this story.
I thoroughly enjoyed the blend of the modern day story line blended with Scotland of the past. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction, modern day romance, mystery and especially those that just enjoy a well crafted story with memorable characters! Don’t wait for summer reading to buy this one!
Mix some mystery, a ghost story and a romance. Stew it all in a rich broth of Scottish lore and history and you have Comyn's Curse. Smoothly written with great detail, it's enormous fun as well as a darn good story. Enjoy this one on a beach, in your armchair or (as I did) on an airplane. It's a winner.
Absolutely delightful! Well-drawn characters, Scottish lore, and just enough mystery to keep you guessing. I really enjoyed this paranormal mystery, and look forward to reading the next book in the series.
I am a sucker for anything set in Scotland especially with a touch of magic and a ghost tossed in (three of my favorite things). This was a delightful little read and I highly recommend it.
I absolutely could not put it down till the end. M Mackakinnon created a beautiful fuse of romance, history and the paranormal. It just makes you fall in line be with Scotland.
I felt like I visited Scotland while reading this book. The characters are so real and I loved Angus and his brogue. Castles and ghosts just go together for me, and the author did an outstanding job connecting stories from the past with the present.
Comyn's Curse by M MacKinnon was a fun romp. Paranormal romance fantasy readers will recognize some of the tropes but all in all, this was a fast paced and well written novel that I enjoyed.
If you like a little mystery , some history and a pinch of magic this book is for u ... Scotland is the place for all of it , good characters , especiallyOle Angus .. definitely my type of read
A unique storyline that keeps you turning the pages. The charts interesting and the plot keeps you from putting it down. Looking forward to the next book
💜📚🏴 I so enjoyed this book! I could not put it down and before I finished I was ordering the next book in the series!!! I was immediately transported back to Scotland where I found myself walking the same streets in Inverness that I walked this past summer! I was quietly walking the Culloden battlefield and I was traveling the roads through the Highlands on the way to the Isle of Skye where the beauty and magnitude of Scotland stole quite a big piece of my heart!!! I cannot wait to read the next book in this series!!! This one definitely found its way to a spot on my bookshelf of favorites!!! 📚📚📚
Just finished this book, first in the trilogy.. loved it! Loved the Scotland setting with the heartbroken girl who goes to her homeland to find she has to break a centuries old curse. I loved how the author tells of true Scotland landmarks and castles and a true legend of a ghost haunting Rait Castle and weaves it into the story. Great read and will order the rest of the series.
I enjoyed this way more than i thought I would! I don't usually like romance, but the history and the paranormal aspect keep you interested! Not as much paranormal stuff as I'd hoped, but that's moreso personal preference. Rating is closer to a 3.5, but I'm interested in the other books so I'm definitely gonna try to keep reading
