About the author

Samantha Shannon is the New York Times and #1 Sunday Times bestselling author of the Bone Season series. From 2010 to 2013 she studied English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford. I’m Samantha Shannon, author of the Bone Season series, architect of all of Paige Mahoney’s suffering. I just thought I’d pop in to explain why you may be seeing two different covers for The Song Rising.

As you'll have worked out from the change in style, Bloomsbury recently decided to give the Bone Season series a new look. However, there will also be a special limited Collector's Edition of The Song Rising in hardback (same price, same release date), with a cover in line with the style of David Mann's originals. There will be a Collector’s Edition for all of the remaining books in the series. The extra time I’ve had to work on it has really paid off, and I’m thrilled with the final novel. I hope you enjoy Paige’s third adventure in March. I’m now off to work on the fourth one, which I fondly hope will shatter emotions you didn’t even know you had.

I still think the second half of this book is way stronger than the first. But the ending makes me so excited for book 4 (and I’m screaming that I have an ARC of it to start right after this), so I have to bump my rating up to 4 stars. I love Paige and her character growth. I’m blown away by the world building done in 3 books. I can’t WAIT to see where this series goes.

I'm a huge fan of The Bone Season series and have been eagerly awaiting the release of book 3, The Song Rising, for the last couple of years. I recently re-read the first two books in the series, and I'm really glad I did because this one picks up right where book 2 leaves off.

I do think the second half of this book is much stronger than the first half. The latter half had me enthralled and eager to see what happens next, and of course none of that would've been as exciting if it hadn't been set up by the beginning events. But I still found myself disengaged and a bit bored by the first half of the story. Paige, though, is still a really great character that I root for. And I appreciate that everything she does is in character, even when it's a stupid decision. She's a well-developed character and I can't wait to see where she goes next.

Speaking of next, this book leaves me wanting so much more—in a good way! I am super excited about the world-building we saw in this installment, and it promises to grow even more in the next! I really think the next book is going to be amazing just seeing where the story leaves off in book 3.

Overall, not my favorite of the series so far, but a good continuation, and one that I might enjoy more on a re-read since it is a complex world with lots of moving parts, weird names and words, and crazy things happening. Bone Season fans will definitely find lots to enjoy in this one!

ATTENTION: WE HAVE A TITLE. AND A RELEASE DATE. But it's a whole year away?! Raven Cycle fans thought they had it bad. But it will totally be worth the wait. AHHH! The Song Rising, November 2016 March 2017. My body is ready.

Update: I'm so happy there's a limited release collector's edition coming out with a cover that matches the old style! But I just noticed this book is only 384 pages?! Book 2 is 500+ pages. GAHH. Why so short?!

First and foremost, this chart will save your life, especially if it has been a hot second since you've read The Bone Season and The Mime Order:



Next, it's confirmed that the wait for the next book is going to kill me. When I received an ARC of this book, I thought this was going to be a trilogy, little did I know it's actually going to be a seven book series and the wait for the fourth one is most likely going to kill me. I guess there are worse ways to go.

Parts of this book completely broke me. Samantha Shannon really knows how to make her words cut, and she doesn't pull back. I actually felt like everything Paige was losing, I was losing. It's a huge talent to be able to immerse readers the way she does, and for that alone I think it is worth giving this series a try.

AND THE ANGST! Oh, Lord, please, if the waiting for the next book doesn't kill me, the slow burn angst romance will. I am so emotionally invested in Paige and Warden that at this point I can't think of another fictional couple I'd rather have together. Please, just let these little babies have happiness with each other!

Speaking of broken hearts, Ivy and Róisín about ripped my heart out, too. Seriously, I'm unhealthily obsessed with these characters and I need to know everything about them, these precious little cinnamon rolls. Please, Samantha Shannon, please!

The Underground was such an amazing experience to read about! I said in my review of The Mime Order how much I loved Wrynn and the Jacobites, and in this book we get them and a whole other civilization we didn't even know about!

I will say that the first third of this book is a little slow. I was very fearful of what my rating would be until I hit about the 35% mark. Then, I was unable to put this book down, because it was so action packed, eventful, and just so damn good.

The Song Rising picks up right where The Mime Order left off: Paige is now the Underqueen and has so many new responsibilities that revolve not only around saving her people, but saving the world that is unaware of the monstrosities that are coming. Uniting the clairvoyants of London seems impossible, Paige can't even imagine uniting all of Europe, and the thought of uniting the entire world seems so impossible.

“Never allow yourself to believe you should be silent.”

Speaking of uniting countries, some of the themes and quotes of this book should be mandatory reading for all of the United States, right now. I promise, I try to keep my reviews nonpolitical, but I just can't help it lately. Governments lying to people and using scare tactics to only unite fear is VERY real in my world right now. Pieces of fiction like this give me hope.

“Some people believe that if they keep their heads down and stick to their safe routine and trust that nothing bad will befall them, then it won’t. They see things happening to others, but they think they’re different; they’re special; it could never happen to them.”

Also, it would be impossible to read this book and not make a million different comparisons to Paige and Katniss from The Hunger Games. Both are self sacrificing, both are very talented in fighting that doesn't involve strength, and both are the face of their world's uprising. Seriously, I could go on for days about their similarities, and once you notice it, it feels impossible to ignore.

But their similarities aren't a bad thing. Hell, I could read about strong female protagonists that are saving their worlds all day long. Being strong and defiant in the face of evil is a trend I'm looking forward to in 2017.



Another important thing to note is that Paige is traumatized, and is suffering with PTSD throughout this book. I know this series doesn't have a ton of diversity, but it does have some, and I really appreciated seeing Paige dealing with her disorder, and realistically struggling with her disorder. Paige hasn't had the easiest life in this series, and she has had to witness so many of her loved ones die. Traumatic events from her childhood are explored even more in this book, and seeing Paige exposed to more dangerous events is utterly heartbreaking, but sincerely appreciated.

With this third installment, I finally feel like the main story is finally starting to take off. Sort of like Harry Potter, I feel like the fourth books is going to be where we start our uphill climb to the big boss fight. Paige is essentially starting over, and we have so many different threads, in so many different locations. I truly believe this is the start of something beautiful, and the coming together of all these threads is going to be something unforgettable.

Even though I love Paige, this series' shining light is truly the side characters. Samantha Shannon has crafted some amazing characters that you can't help but love and root for. Nick, Maria, Eliza *sings name like in Hamilton*: all phenomenal, and I would preorder and devour any spin-off book starting any of them. As for the Rephaites: Terebell has got me shook and Warden has got me making heart eyes.

Yet, the villains are truly a tier above most YA villains, too. They are complex, and they are mysterious, and they are completely addicting. I have nothing but high hopes for this entire cast in the books that have yet to be released.

IS JAXON GOOD OR IS JAXON BAD? PLEASE? I DON'T KNOW AND I NEED TO THEORY CRAFT WITH FRIENDS, BECAUSE I AM SHOOK! And why does Paige never kill anyone? You best believe I would have stopped and took a shot at Hilliard Vance before I left.



The next book is going to be such a different reading experience. I can't say much without giving away spoilers, but ME AND MY SHIP, steered by Warden and Paige, ARE SO HERE FOR IT!

Man this series just keeps giving! Fast paced, action packed fantasy filled with twists and turns.
Paige and her Mime Order are forced into hiding when Scion start creating portable scanners - able to spot any Clairvoyant immediately, so they can be imprisoned or killed.
As Underqueen, Paige must find a way to defend her voyants from Nashira and her evil associates.

I enjoyed this one more as we don't just spend time in London. We go to Manchester and even Edinburgh and get to see what the voyant communities are like there. Plus all the wonderful characters are here, Nick, Eliza, Warden among others.

With all the magic of the aether, the fighting between different powers, as well as the underlying message that no one should be treated as less than human, this series has plenty of layers, and something for everyone!

I am very sad that the next book might not be until 2020, but this is a great series and if it keeps going this way, it is going to be truly awesome!

The immortal race of the Rephaim are playing puppets with those in authority and the flesh-eating emim have infiltrated London. Paige has won ownership of the underground clairvoyant society and now must make the segregated gangs work as one if they have any hopes of saving both themselves and the city they call home. But with their fearless leader now a wanted criminal and their former comrade now working with the corrupt government, how do they know who to trust? And what can any of them do when new technology surfaces, that seeks to eradicate those with their ethereal abilities? It is all too much for a nineteen-year-old to handle, yet destiny has chosen to place the fate of the world in Paige’s young hands.

The progression of Paige’s character from the first book to the third has been a joy to witness. As a reader, I shared in her triumphs and her setbacks. Now, three books later, my happiness whilst reading this was so entwined with the protagonist’s to what could be termed, an unhealthy degree. Her grief became my own and there was a lot of it in this book!

The sheer amount of emotion that this book conveyed displayed Shannon’s skill at creating characters that could become beloved, no matter how briefly they were mentioned. For it was not just Paige who sought my affinity. Side characters, both new and old, battled for dominion over the reader’s heart. And, in true Shannon style, it was those with the cruellest pasts and the bleakest of futures that won.

With the onslaught of emotion that this book brought, it also delivered on the action front. This book sees Paige and her motley crew (not to be confused with Motley Crue) traverse Britain in an attempt to thwart the construction of the new technology that could eliminate them. Scrapes, scuffles, and strife thwarted their quest, and each skirmish was as pulse-raising and breath-taking as the next.

The most bone-chilling was saved for the finale, however. Former villains returned and some of them were de-masked to reveal something other than what they first appeared to be. One thing remained and that was that you can never rely on Shannon to deliver the expected!

This has been one of my most anticipated releases of 2017. I absolutely loved the previous two books and “The Mime Order” left me begging for more from this world. However I did have some issues with the previous books, one of them being that these book are quite complicated and hard to read. And the third installment “The Song Rising” wasn’t an exception to this. Yet another world is added and there are so many new characters introduced. But it was so worth it to power through! Paige is just amazing, and she has developed so much from the first book. The world building is outstanding, the side characters are fantastic and the plot is surprising and daring!

The Bone Season: 4 stars

I’M JUST SO MAD ABOUT THESE COVER CHANGE!! If it wasn’t for the limited edition I would have gotten the ebook. The old designs where so pretty and the new once are just plain white covers, not an improvement! Lucky for me they also fabricated a limited edition, which does fit the old designs and is absolutely gorgeous! AND IT’S SIGNED! I also love how the maps are evolving with the books and are completely different from the other two books (however I did still miss a map about the districts in London because it’s still a bit vague who rules where and how many there are). And I missed the pedigree with The Seven Orders of Clairvoyance.

Start of the book (3,0 stars)
I was literally shocked by the revelation on the first pages, I don’t know if I forgot about this or that this was the first I heard about it but I was so stunned. If I think back on the other books, I could have known but yeah it just never crossed my mind that Jaxon… was the traitor off the Ranthen all those years ago.
Mannn… Shannons books are complicated! Book three and we get another world, another group of people and sooooo many new characters. I like this so much about Shannons books, she keeps it interesting and never falls back on the old systems or world building. But like her other books, the beginning is super complex and really hard to read, which makes it tough to get into the story. For her books you really need to sit down for and give the story time to evolve! ‘In the end everything will make sense just like the other books’ I told myself while the plot kept dwindling and I didn’t understand names or choices. The beginning had A LOT of new names, it was quite overwhelming since I read the other books a year ago and in Dutch. So I couldn’t remember all the characters from the previous books, but there were also soooo many new names! They could have used some more introduction. But, yeah, all my bickering aside I was so happy to continue with this series and to be back in Paige her head and this amazing world!

The writing style (5,0 stars)
I love the writing style in this book. It’s one off the stronger aspects about this whole series. And I can just see Shannon’s improvements with every book she puts out. Some quotes are just WOW! That about war (on page 7) was just so good. And though I didn’t agree with every decision she made about the plot or about Paige I do agree with every word in this book.
The only thing I want to mention real quick is that I think that this book would have been a 5 star read if it was told from multiple POV’s. Besides that Paige is starting to get on my nerves, I think the world would become so much more alive if multiple POV’s are introduced. There are several moments in this book that The Mime Order splits up and I was so disappointed that we didn’t get that side of the story or just quick summaries. We haven’t heard from The Beneath since Paige left for Manchester and that is such a shame! So I hope we get that in future books considering the end of this one and everyone splitting up all over Europe.

The world building (4,0 stars)
I love the whole London Shannon created with this different layers and Scion as this dystopian aspect. The Unnatural Assembly, The Mime Order, The Underqueen… I loved all these terms so much and it so well put together. It just works! I enjoy it so much that with every book the world building changes and becomes even more layered and detailed. And we FINALLY get more from other country’s! I loved to know about the riot in Bulgaria, about what really happened in Ireland with Paige and about Sweden (although I still don’t fully understand what countries are under Scion’s spell and what are the free countries). And I loved that we finally got to experience how England looks outside of London! The world building of Edinburgh and Manchester reminded me so much of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century. I learned about this in history and just experiencing it through this book was heartbreaking. People living on the streets in such poverty while working 18 hours a day, orphans missing fingers, people begging, having nothing but the clothes on their back, just the exploitation by the factories.. it made me so mad! Some scenes almost made me cry. Shannon did such an amazing job to sketch these people’s situation. There is such poverty in Scion England.. It made me so sad. I was so happy to experience other cities in London and to experience their clairvoyant community.
There are some scenes in this book that are so incredibly written, such that it feels like I’m there. That scene when Paige is trying to find the leader of the clairvoyants in Edinburgh when it was super dark and there was such a horrendous smell. I felt like I was there, that I couldn’t see and was in that situation. I almost started panicking.
But what was also done great was that the world doesn’t stand still when Paige wasn’t around. And that you can experience that the world doesn’t revolve around her but that things are happening when Paige leaves a city. For example when Catrin killed Roberta, that was such a shock for me! (was a shame is that we didn’t get to experience the battle) I really hope that we get more from the characters in the city’s in the next books.

I just want to say that before I dive in the things that didn’t work for me or that I missed that I did think the world building was amazing! And I wouldn’t give it 4 stars if it wasn’t. There are 4 more books in this series and I understand that we can’t have every secret spilled in book three, but I expected some more answers and more explanations about certain topics.
First of all I missed more Emim excitement. They are such cool creatures and though they get mentioned I still missed them appearing and causing a scene. I also missed more debt on the powers of the unnatural assembly. While I know what a oracle does, or a dreamwalker, I’m still left clueless on most of the other orders and there are just soo many! Since this book doesn’t contain the pedigree I was really doomed to the internet for looking up when one of the orders was mentioned and that was quite annoying.
The third thing that I really miss is; how does the rest of the world look? Okay we get some more inside about Bulgaria, Sweden and the leaders of two other countries are mentioned coming over to view senshield. But I’m still left clueless on most things. What is the deal with Australia or America or Asia? Who rules the other countries? Do they have clairvoyants? Do they have such poverty? I also can’t imagine that Scion can grow more bigger and other countries not doing anything. I mean for other countries Scion is a huge thread! And they just come to visit and see what senshield is all about? And while I understand because they also see clairvoyants as a thread, I can’t imagine that they would just give themselves over to Scion. It’s just not realistic that other countries just sit on the sideline and let Scion grow and enlarge till it reaches their country! But maybe we get a little more inside on this since they are now going to Bulgaria, Sweden and France.
A thing that is hard to grasp for me is; how in the hell did England take such a step back in such little time! Like I mentioned the world building reminded me of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century. That was 300 years ago.. So you want me to believe that the progressive, rich England from now can go 300 years back in time in about 40 years??! No way! I get that this book is fiction and that we also have things like clairvoyants and ghosts but I think Shannon could have thought out more of the details about the year that the story takes place or she could have given us a little bit more detail about how this could have happened to England.
And now we are on the topic of history, how did the clairvoyants came to existence and how did Scion arise (although there was some inside given about some king it remains vague)? Another thing I still missed in this book was background on the Raphaim. This is the third book they have been mentioned and I don’t even know where they came from, why they are here or why they can’t touch this red flower. I have soooo many questions about these things, and I won’t bore you with all of them but I just want to make clear that the foundation that the world building rest upon and the past of Scion England is still really vague and not worked out like I wanted it to be in a third installment.

Main Character (4,0 stars)

“I wasn’t made to stay behind.”

I loved the Paige I saw here! She was so awesome and I loved how she handled her gift. I liked to see her grow and loved some of the choices she made regarding The Mime Order. She made such a character improvement from the first book and I really loved the new Paige. I loved how she could silence people by just raising her hand and how people finally treated her with some respect. I am on the other hand still a little underwhelmed by her dream walker powers. I mean come on this is book three, and though we have come a long way since book one and Paige has learned a lot, I still expect a main character to be able to protect her friends after three books. I get that there are four more books in this series so there is a lot off time to still see Paige her ability shine but I expected more in this one. I was really disappointed every time something failed and Paige just collapsed from exhaustion or when she complained about an headache especially in crucial situations. Later in the book this did get a lot better and I loved her in the factory.
I could not deal with her blaming herself and the paragraph’s about her hating herself or making other choices or have other outcomes where just annoying. Come on it already happened, and some things aren’t even your fault! I got so tired of Paige wanting to give up and giving away her title as Underqueen. I wanted her to be brave and to become more confident once the book continued. But now she just dwindled and though I loved the character improvement she got on my nerves sometimes.
Another thing I’m so annoyed about is her and Warden… And her choice making regarding a few things, but I’ll talk about this later.
But the last pages made me so in love with her again! For her not giving away the Mime Order was so brave!

Other characters (4,5 stars)
There are soooo many side characters in this book (so I won’t go into that much detail)! And then I mean so much that I lose track of them and don’t even remember if some had been already introduced earlier in the story. And though I think that this book needed to have a lot off new side characters, regarding that Paige visited a lot off other places and needed to meet people, they needed a little more introduction. I loved loved loved the friendship between Paige and Nick and the friendship that is formed between Paige, Elisa, Maria and Tom. This was seriously my favorite thing in this book! The most present side characters where so well developed! I think that every character in this book was displayed and put down perfectly. Some you felt sorry for, some you hated, some you loved. Shannon did this so incredibly good!

Romance (2,5 stars)
The romance in this book had me a bit annoyed. I still ship Paige and Warden even though I found them both annoying in this book. The first 100 pages of the book Paige ignores Warden because something Jaxon said to her. I got so frustrated with this because he was finally out her live but still had such a big grasp on Paige (although I loved how this tells us that) I hated that after three books they still couldn’t be together!! I hated the way Warden responded every time Paige wanted to talk about this. He was okay with staying together but also didn’t care if Paige broke it off. His responses where just so.. dry. I didn’t care for him in this book. Don’t get me wrong I understand that Paige broke it off, but I would have loved to see them together and to become this power couple (Though I’m certain this will happen eventually). Now it was just awkward.

Plot (3,5 stars)
The plot in the beginning was pretty slow and in my opinion quite boring. We just see Paige dealing with problem after problem. And I kind of missed the part about her starting the Mime Order; things like her choosing her commanders (since I had no idea who half these people where), setting up a whole other division in the districts where things that I missed and I felt like 20 or so pages could have been dedicated to that.
This book revolves around Senshield. And I…. I’m just not a fan. It became more like a quest then this rebellion that I was expecting to see. I just didn’t like it! It was also really vague throughout the whole book what senshield actually was and what this core was (though it does get clear in the end). I understand that the clairvoyants didn’t know so the reader is kept in the dark to make you keep on reading. But for me it was just not working. I wanted more Paige and Warden, more London, more of the unnatural assembly and especially more about the powers.
And then my real problems started with the trap from Scion. This was sooooo predictable and I can’t even believe Paige fall for this. I also couldn’t believe her not telling Terebell and Warden about this. They had this huge fight about something similar earlier and about trust and then Paige just goes rogue and takes some huge risks that I didn’t find necessary. I get that she is trying to prove herself but this was not the time! My other problem was with how the trap was designed by Scion. If you are going to catch the biggest criminal leader of the country who has supernatural abilities you send more than a woman on a television screen, a net that can be cut down by one bullet and 8 paratroopers? This was a little strange from their point because they are known to be ruthless. And the way this trap was designed and unmanned was just way to easy. And how did Paige resurface from being under the ice again? If you can walk over ice it needs to be at least 8 cm so that doesn’t break that easily if you’re under it and panicking. And didn’t Paige mention the current was dragging her? How the Hell was Warden able to get her out from under an 8 cm thick layer of ice when she was dragged by a strong tight and might already been dragged several feet from the hole. And I also found it extremely cliché that Warden just happened to end up there and save Paige.
From the point that they went underground it became interesting again. I really liked the new world building of this whole hidden city and I think it was really smart of Shannon to involve also the underground. What I didn’t like was that the whole unnatural assembly, besides four, got put on hold so Paige could do her thing.. I just didn’t like it, Paige finally had her army. I understand in this situation that it was best but I just hated it.
So next Paige goes on this quest for senshield, and like I mentioned before I didn’t like this. What I did like was that it brought back the action that the first halve of the book was really lacking. I liked the mission in the fabric although I was a little disappointed that Price got killed so fast! He felt like a villain I would love to hate. I loved meeting all the new clairvoyants and seeing the communities in other cities. This was just awesome to read about.
I was so so mad when Paige gave herself up to Scion, not knowing her plan. I had lost my faith in her and I was ready to close the book and not looking back on this series ever again. Luckily I didn’t do that because the last part of this book was soooo good.

The ending (4,5 stars)
So after Paige was arrested and I figured out her plan I was really impressed and I loved how everything unfolds. All the double agents, the secret notes, the codes, just the layers upon layers you unravel while reading those last few pages was truly amazing. The involvement of a play (that was written extraordinary good) was super clever, I loved the statement the dancer made (although I wished there was a little more time spend on it in this book). The amount of growth Paige has shown was breathtaking, I have so much respect for her, for not breaking at those hard conditions! Unfortunately we already knew Paige was going to survive, since there are four more books to come. That took away so much of the tension. Mostly when the main character is taken captive the writing goes really bland and the plot dies a bit. But here the plot bloomed, it shined! I was so impressed by Shannon to make this happen! Paige bends little by little but never breaks or gave up!
The only thing I didn’t really like was how this book ended. Paige is SHIPPED OFF to Paris! I was so mad at this! On the one hand I did really like that other countries get involved in the story (praying for multiple POV), but for me the story played in England and I want Paige to take Scion down from London! It feels so unfair because Paige destroyed the core for The Mime Order, and then she can’t even go back to them to tell them what she did? They are just supposed to believe she is still dead? And the other thing that made me infuriated was that she finally proved herself and then she gets an assignment from a really vague never before mentioned “ Domino Programme” and is ‘ordered’ to go to Paris for an assignment. After enduring this I think Paige deserves to make her own choices.

Okay despite my nagging on small things I still loved this series and I’m looking forward to the next installment! (not for the long wait though)

so far this was the fastest, shortest, and most action packed of the series. the reveal in the beginning was crazyyyyy 🤯 and this was such a ride with more twists and turns. i'm starting to understand why the fandom always jokes paige can't catch a break 😭

i can barely focus on writing a review for this bc all i can think about is immediately starting the next book. all the details in this and new turns to the story are solidifying samantha shannon as one of my fav new authors of 2024 (and ever).

i'm truly awed by her ability to not only tackle the complicated machinations of military and politics in this dystopian plotline, but the worldbuilding of fantasy (rephs and clairvoyants) with such meticulous details, and throw in real life influences and histories of countries, cultures, language, etc.

i'm so hyped for book 4 🏃🏼‍♀️‍➡️

i picked this up a few weeks ago and after 2 pages immediately put it down and went nope, i just decided i'm not that invested anymore. but my apartment was in desperate need of cleaning so i splurged and picked up the audiobook... and the experience was only marginally better.

i just don't like the direction this series is going. the whole plot of this book focused on disabling a technology system that would put the clairvoyants in danger, but it just felt so slow and pointless in the grand scheme of the series. there was relationship drama that made sense but felt petty and predictable. and worst of all, the cast of characters in this was so big and random and i really didn't care about anyone other than the main character and the people she'd gotten closer to in book one.

it only took me a day to finish listening to this and honestly the narrator is great, but i just hate how this series is so dragged out. it's becoming a pretty complicated sci-fi series that you really can't understand unless you retain all the details of the world and the names of every side character. i just really don't care to put in that much effort for a book i know will only be 3-ish stars.

While this may not be my favorite series of all time, it sure is a damn good one. I thoroughly enjoy each book and look forward to the suspense and twists that come with each one of them. It may not be groundbreaking or brilliant, but it is still so entertaining!

This book was fairly short, so I won't have too much to say in my review. But what I can say is that Paige, the FMC, has grown so much since the first book. She is a such a badass character and to see her grown into her own has been such a crazy journey. Paige in the first book would be so proud of Paige in this book. Her determination and loyalty is so fierce you can't help but admire it. This is one of those series where the minor characters add so much to the story and I genuinely enjoy each and every one of them and what they bring.

I do really enjoy the plot of these books, so much so that it's what draws me in and keeps me reading this series. Like I stated before, it's nothing crazily unique but it's still fun. Just when you think you've got a handle on what will happen next, this book surprises you. Revolution and politics has always fascinated me when it's combined with fantasy elements and this is not different. The story and details take a bit of getting used to, and I can't lie, I find myself still confused at points because there's so much to follow. So much happens in such a short amount of time; it's like a rollercoaster.

Overall, I's still really enjoying this series despite the books only being 3 stars for me. I like it enough to want to keep on going and see where things go. I really enjoyed the ending of this book and it sets up such a good plot for the 4th one. I look forward to continuing your story, Paige.

The Song Rising is the third instalment in the The Bone Season series. It starts with a prelude right where The Mime Order left off, to jump to four weeks later in the first chapter. The clairvoyant community is in danger more than ever since Senshield, a powerful device able to detect the first three orders of clairvoyance, is now officially installed in the streets of London. The Mime Order and the Unnatural Assembly are changing the syndicate ways while deciding the next steps to take in order to protect the voyants.

I mentioned in my review of The Mime Order that the world-building got expanded in that second book, but it’s in The Song Rising where we get to explore other citadels of the Republic of Scion England, specifically Manchester and Edinburgh. I found it very interesting to see how different the voyant community and its hierarchy is in those two cities in contrast to London. There are also some glimpses of the Scion conquest of other European countries such as Sweden, Ireland and Bulgaria.

This is definitely the most action-packed book of the series so far. There are so many fast-paced scenes and non-stop moments to the point where I honestly couldn’t put this book down. This instalment is also the one that shows a deeper insight into Scion, especially regarding the military side of the government. The alliance between the syndicate and the Ranthen is another aspect that plays a key part in the plot and that deeply influences Paige’s decisions through the book.

Paige is one of my favourite characters ever and I just love how far she has come from The Bone Season even though it has been less than a year since the events that started off this series. But everything that happened to her in the first two books has shaped her into the flame of the revolution she is today. It was hard to read the last part of this instalment because of everything that happens to her and I’m sure it’s going to be hard to read the aftermath of those final chapters. But I’m so ready to see how she keeps fighting for herself, her loved ones and the clairvoyant community.

Fortunately, not everything is death and destruction in this book. There are also some beautiful scenes between Paige and her friends. Her friendship with Nick is certainly one of my favourite aspects of the series, I just love how much they support each other no matter what. I also like how Eliza, Maria and Tom believe so much in her. And what to say about Warden, I absolutely love his relationship with Paige and can’t wait to see how it develops in the next instalments.

Summing up, The Song Rising is an action-packed third instalment full of twists and shocking moments. It focuses more on the military aspects of Scion and the alliance between the voyants and the Rephain. I had a blast re-reading it, especially because this time it was a buddy-read with Piki and it helped me to pick up on some details. Also, I’m extremely excited to read the fourth instalment because it will take place in another city, another country. And because I just love these characters and this world.

This book was so short and yet it took me 5 days to read it. This was purely because I was bored and confused for soooooo much of it. I really want to like these books and I do enjoy the characters but god it's hard to keep up with this story sometimes. I definitely do like it enough to continue but reading this series is definitely a challenge.

I'm not going to lie, I skimmed this book a bit at the end which definitely made me more confused. However, this book simply would not end!! It was dragging on and on and I wanted to stab myself

It’s no secret that I am a HUGE fan of The Bone Season. So, you can imagine, after over a two year wait, how thrilled I was to finally dive into the third installment. Now that I’ve turned the final page of the book I'm a bit speechless. I had some high expectations going into this after the whirlwind that was the first two books. Guess what? Samantha Shannon took those high expectations and blew the roof completely off of them! The Song Rising left me breathless and wanting more. It’s quite possible that I’ve already found my top read of 2017.

The Mime Order concluded with a jaw dropping, gasp worthy cliffhanger. Paige, who had just won the crown for Underqueen, finds out that her ex-mime-lord Jaxon Hall had a little secret up his sleeve. The first Ranthen rebellion that was quenched all those years ago by a human betrayal? That was Jaxon’s doing. The Song Rising begins on the tremulous notes of that shocking reveal and the consequences of Paige’s actions in the scrimmage as well as Jaxon’s betrayal make themselves obvious pretty quickly. Due to the fact that Paige turned against her mime-lord to win the title of Underqueen a lot of the syndicate, London’s voyant criminal underworld, don’t exactly accept her as their leader. Not to mention the fact that the Ranthen, the Rephaim who turned against Nashira, are questioning her loyalty and ability to lead because of her past connection with Jaxon. Paige’s reign as Underqueen is definitely off to a rocky start as she rebuilds the syndicate from the ground up to prepare them to take action against Scion by joining with the Ranthen. However, a threat lies fast approaching as Scion implements Senshield, a technology that can detect clairvoyance, forcing Paige to make the choice of putting her people into hiding to save them. Senshield is the one thing that could not only spell death for all voyants but ruin their revolution before it even begins so it has to be destroyed at any cost. The Song Rising starts with a bang as you dive head first into a story full of uncertainty, suspense, unexpected plot twists, and so much more as new allies are gained and new enemies rise up.

Hands down, one of my favorite things about The Bone Season so far has been the characters. They've become so memorable for me. Samantha Shannon has created these characters with so much depth, they’re not one-dimensional they're complex and flawed. I mean most of the voyants are criminals turned revolutionaries after all (some reluctantly so). And then aside from the voyants there’s the Rephaim who are still shrouded in so much mystery, but that’s what makes them interesting. Both have characters that are working for Scion and Nashira while both also have characters that are working against them. I won’t go into a lot of detail about all of the characters but that’s mainly because certain things are revealed that I don’t want to spoil. I will say that we do learn a bit about both Nick's past as well as Warden's.

From The Bone Season to The Song Rising, Paige has gone through a lot of changes. Seriously, her character development has been on point! One thing I’ve loved is seeing her step out of that role of reluctant leader and into embracing it and how much she wants to change the world she lives in. She’s someone who is headstrong, stubborn, ambitious, and just cares so much for her fellow voyants. She’s willing to sacrifice anything to make sure that there is a day where they don’t have to worry about whether their clairvoyance will lead them to their deaths. Is she perfect? Absolutely not. In fact, Paige can be a bit impulsive at times which almost always turns out bad. But at heart, everything she does is fueled by good intentions. Going into The Song Rising she has a lot of doubt about who she can trust because of Jaxon’s betrayal, which is something she has to overcome. There’s also so much revealed about her past that I won’t even go into. All I’m going to say is that this book has cemented the fact that Paige is my top favorite female character.

Beyond the familiar faces from previous books, The Song Rising brings with it a full introduction to so many other great characters. One of them, Maria, who we see briefly in The Mime Order has quickly become a favorite of mine. I love her.

And don’t even get me started on the romance! I’ve said this in previous reviews so I’m probably becoming repetitive but I love how Samantha Shannon has crafted this incredible, slow burn romance and not made it the main focal point of the books. Warden and Paige, I love them. There’s just something so unique about their connection and with each book I love them more and more. I can’t even really explain it but I can’t get enough of the two of them. The Song Rising definitely played with my emotions where they are concerned. Yes, I'm being purposely vague.

Something else I would like to point out as notable is the fact that almost every single character in power or in a leadership position is female. From the good guys to the enemies it’s the women running the show. The Song Rising, in particular, is rocking some serious girl power! I loved it.

Also, once again, Samantha Shannon has blown me away with her writing and world building! Each book has delved more and more into this horrific and shocking world while peeling away layers that I never saw coming. The Song Rising goes more into the internal workings of Scion, we get to see more of London and other voyant communities outside of London, and there’s so much heartbreaking character backstory revealed. Plus, there is a plot twist that I’m still picking my jaw up off of the floor over.

This book was engaging, suspenseful, and just when I thought I knew what was going to happen the rug was ripped right out from under me. Be prepared to shed some tears and be left on the edge of your seat breathlessly anticipating the fourth book. I for one need said book in my hands right now.

Overall, The Song Rising was not only everything I hoped for but also exactly what I’ve come to expect from this author. It was completely worth the two year wait!

The start of this one is slower than the first two for me, but the second half had me hooked. This focused on the true reality and brutality of war/rebellion. And What it means to be the figure head of a rebellion. Think Katniss in mockingjay part one. That is this story. I’m excited to see what happens next.

So many great discussions and metaphors in this one. Also Jaxon is such a well nuanced and developed character that breaks my heart constantly that it all. I love to hate him too.

This book. THIS BOOK. It was worth the two year wait and more, because it was absolutely bloody brilliant. Fantastic, amazing, exquisite. It left me in a mess of feelings and emotions that I'm still trying to process. It was the kind of book that I wanted to reread the second I finished it. Not only to reread it, but the entire series that it is part of (and this is saying something, since I just finished rereading the first two books a couple of months ago). It was an adventure that I am so glad to have been part of.

The Song Rising continues the story of Paige Mahoney, now Underqueen of the London Syndicate, who is trying to jumpstart a revolution and overthrow Scion. But with the looming introduction of Senshield, a new and improved way of detecting voyants, things escalate a lot faster than Paige had anticipated.

I've spoken time and time again about my utmost love for this series. The Bone Season felt like a fresh air back when I first read it and now, three books later, it's still as original to me as it was back then. Although people have pointed out problematic aspects in the first book (you can read some reviews that highlight those here and here), I feel like the next two books, The Mime Order and The Song Rising, highlight such a strong progression in the story. To put it simply, The Bone Season as a whole is the story about the birth of a revolution, which starts blossoming with The Song Rising. The scene is set, the players identified, and now the dance begins. Its message of revolution, rebellion, striving to protect what is yours, what is dear to your heart, protect the community and your sense of self - it permeates the pages. I honestly cannot express well enough the impact that this book had on me. I was hooked from the very first page - it felt like coming home.

Samantha has matured as a writer and it shows. The prose flows, it enraptures the reader and I was holding my breath for 90% of the time, because everything that was happening was so intense. I was worried at first because, compared to the second book, this one was much shorter, but having finished it, I realise it was exactly how it was supposed to be. The only downside is that I finished it way too fast and I need the next book this second. 😂 My heart broke several times throughout reading, but I wouldn't have had it any other way.

The characters made the journey even more worthwhile. Paige is a force to be reckoned with and she's definitely part of my all time favourite female characters. Maria and Tom are SO dear to my heart, I can't even. Warden is bae, so are Nick and Eliza. The only thing is that I wish we had seen more of Nashira and Jaxon, especially, but I have a feeling they'll be back with a vengeance in the next books. Also, I love how Samantha chooses to have so many female antagonists - smart, ruthless, devious women that make your blood chill.

I also have to mention something else, and this way, say a huge thank you to the author: she made Romania, my country, a part of this story. Not many people know about it, fewer people care about it, but to see it present in a series that is so dear to my heart means so incredibly much. So thank you ❤️

What I'm trying to say is that more people need to be reading this series. It's so, so good and I cannot recommend it enough. It has a compelling story, amazing characters, beautiful writing and I absolutely adore it.

Following the battle in the Rose Ring at the end of The Mime Order, Paige Mahoney has risen to the position of Underqueen of London's criminal syndicate. But she turned her back on Jaxon Hall to do so, which leaves her with some dangerous enemies who don't see her as the rightful ruler of the syndicate. On top of that, Senshield is being introduced in London, which is a new technology that can sense the first 3 orders of clairvoyance. With Senshield scanners all over London, it's getting more and more dangerous for the voyant community to be out and about...but it also strengthens Paige's resolve that something must be done to bring down Scion and the Rephaim that controls Scion.

Paige undertakes a journey to try to discover what and where this technology that powers Senshield is and to try to destroy it. She has many new enemies but also new alliances as well.

Her relationship with Warden continues to grow. I love the way Shannon has handled their relationship thus far. They've come a long way and are having to hide what they feel for the other, but you can tell by their actions that they hold each other in the front of their thoughts and I really like that this romance has been a slow burning one so far.

War is also on the horizon, and you get a fleeting glimpse into what that would mean for this world, what it has meant in the past. You don't find out all the details of the reasoning behind the war until close to the end, but then once you do, it all makes such perfect sense that I'm surprised that I didn't fit together the pieces of the puzzle sooner. I'm sure that in the books to come, there will be much more warfare than what was in this one.

This book is the third in the series, and it took a direction that I didn't see coming. Paige remains one of my favorite MCs. I like her decision making and the way she views herself. Even though she is in the highest order of clairvoyance and is now in a position of power, she doesn't abuse that power, nor does she put herself in higher regard than she does others.

The ending was phenomenal and unexpected...not quite a cliffhanger, but obviously leading to some big changes and a whole new chapter of this series, which has become one of my favorite series. I am so, so excited for book 4 to come out, even though I have a long wait for it.

I would highly recommend this series to anyone and everyone, but especially fans of fantasy. Just be prepared, because it will give you a swift kick in the feels....often.

This series just blows my mind more and more with each book. I think I see what’s coming and then suddenly there’s a twist and I’m left feeling floored. And I absolutely loved every second of it! I love being taken on a wild ride and that is absolutely what this series and this book does. Some parts made me cry, some parts made me want to pull my hair out, some parts made me want to laugh and cheer, some parts made me want to scream. All very good things when reading! (I’m a sadist, I know!) There’s characters I’m totally head over heels for and would hand over my heart on a platter for them and then there’s the ones that I just love to hate. This series has everything I love to see when reading and I really could go on and on about how much I adore it!

reread #1: this book is pain, just pain

1) The bone season ★★★★☆
2) The mime order ★★★★★

This series has taken my heart and I don't even want it back.
I've been marathoning The bone season for two weeks and now I'm trying not to think about having to wait for two years to hold the fourth book in my hands and that's all it took for me to fall in love with these world, these characters and that otp.

This third book was the best one for me.
The song rising was action from start to finish and I had a blast reading it. I also had my heart broken. That ending was hopeful but brutal at the same time.

These books are also perfect for people who are getting a bit tired of reading about mindless sixteen years old who must save the world and fall in love. The bone season is adult fantasy but very approchable for who isn't used to it.
I don't even know what else to say, just wish more people would read these books because they're so much better than many other series that receive endless praise.
