HEROES OF THE ROUNDTABLE! With the powers of GIRL and the powers of SQUIRREL on their side, Kamala Khan and Doreen Green are an unbeatable team! But that title is about to be seriously challenged — because New Jersey has been invaded by a swarm of knights in shining…suits?! Driving cars armed with javelins?! Uh-oh. Kamala and Doreen are gonna need allies to help protect their home turf — and they know just who to call. Don’t miss the return of the team-up that’s got everyone talking!

So at first I was pretty confused with this issue, because it clearly shows Spider-Man (Miles Morales, that is) and Ms. Marvel touring a college campus with Squirrel Girl, whom I’m fairly certain is older. Thankfully they did quickly explain the reasoning behind this one, which I was very grateful for (otherwise I would have been confused the whole issue). This was a fun issue, though I don’t know where it’s going to go in the long run. It has a lot of potential, thanks to the teamup at hand. Also, you don’t need to have read the previous Marvel Rising plot in order to understand this one. I’m not fully up to date on the previous one (I tried to follow it, but it got ahead of me, plus it bounced around SO much) and I was fine.
I'm not into Knights of the Roundtable storylines. I think they are so played out. So that tarnished my rating and possible enjoyment of this book. I did like the 2018 comic and the YouTube show.
My disclaimer here: I tend to find issue #1 of almost any series annoying and usually about a star lower than the following issues will be.
In this case, the issue seemed out of balance: we seemed to get a whole lot of detail about their tour of ESU with Squirrel Girl, but the conversations between the characters seemed like "bits" instead of revealing much about the characters, and then there were only a few pages left to get to what looks like it will be the plot to come.
It wasn't a bad issue, but it wasn't great either, which is disappointing when a series has a bunch of my favorite characters.
I really loved the last Marvel Rising, and I am a huge fan of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, and that's one of the reasons why it is such a shame to have to give it such a low rating.
It was just... dull. There was none of the cool witty dialogue, and most of it was just a fairly boring stroll through the university. I appreciate that the first issue could just be setting the scene, but it really needs to up it's game from here.
I am always on the hunt for a book with a great female superhero team-up, and so I was interested in Marvel Rising immediately. I haven't read The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl or all of Ms. Marvel yet, but I know that I will love both of them.
Marvel Rising is actually a continuation of a 2018 Marvel Rising series. I did not know that and will have to go back and read that volume so I can see how Ms. Marvel and the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl met and became friends. Though that background would be nice, it's not necessary to enjoy this issue. Doreen takes Kamala, Miles Morales (Spiderman), and Dante Pertuz (The Incredible Inferno) on a tour of her college. I always love when superheroes do normal things like tour colleges and worry about the future so this was right up my alley. I also liked seeing the friendship between these three young superheroes. I felt like Kamala and Miles felt like real friends. He was worried about her, especially since they hadn't talked outside of superhero stuff recently. I also liked seeing how Kamala was freaked out about her future because she doesn't have a plan yet. It's a highly relatable scenario, and I just wanted to tell Kamala that she is still in high school, superhero or not, and she doesn't have to know yet.
Of course, these kids couldn't have just a normal college visit. Nope, Morgana has to somehow control two drives to make them psych0. Since this is a superhero comic, our three teens and one young adult suit up to fight the bad guys. I know this is why most people come to comics, but I just wanted more of the college visit, teen drama, and friendship. Perhaps I'll get more of it in Marvel Rising #2.
