Sort of but kinda doesn't spin out of Infinity Wars. Nebula geta an Asgardian weapon and destroys some planets to impress Gamora, I guess? So Angela rounds up a bunch of ex-Thors to stop her. I did like seeing Throg again. The story is just OK. So is the art and coloring. It's all just bland. It's never a good sign when this many artists are needed to complete 5 issues.

I can usually read a graphic novel in about an hour, so when it takes me two days to trudge through one, I know there is a problem. Let's unpack this thing:

First of all, nothing about Nebula makes sense here. She wants to prove that she is the most deadly woman alive instead of Gamora, so to do this she gets a world-ending artifact. But isn't Gamora deadly because of her skills? That would be like proving that I am the best at karate because I have a machine gun.

So using this world-ending weapon on a planet, she considers changing her mind because she sees some kids there. So wait, she didn't realize that there would be kids on an entire planet? Is she that dense?

Nebula also does the exact same thing to the dwarves that Thanos does in the Avengers movie. It was a good movie, Marvel, but lets come up with some fresh ideas.

In the end, Nebula is defeated in a way that could have been used to beat her in five seconds in issue one. Seriously, there is no reason that they couldn't have won by just doing what they waited to do in issue 5. Also, by waiting, they cost a bunch of people their lives. Good job, "heroes".

There are more problems than just the villain, however. The ship the heroes use has a piece of the rainbow bridge plugged into its hyperdrive doohickey or whatever. So the next time I need gas for my car, I'll just pour melted down horse hooves in the tank, because that's how things work, right?

There are also way too many flashbacks that come at random times. Most of these show how the team got together, but the problem is that these stories are boring. Angela appears and says, "come with me to be a hero" and then they leave together. That's usually it.

In the notes at the end of one of the issues, the writer talks about how he has had the idea for this team for a while. That is exactly what this book feels like: an idea for a team. There is no coherent story and none of the characters interact in interesting ways. They needed to keep this one at the drawing board for a while longer before pushing this out.

United by a mysteriously reanimated Destroyer, Valkyrie, Throg, Angela, Skurge, and Thunderstrike are the Asgardians of the Galaxy, and they're the only ones who can stop Nebula from unleashing an army of the dead against the universe!

I like the idea behind this book - Cullen Bunn's Fearless Defenders run is a book I return to again and again for inspiration, and this is kind of a spiritual successor, but without the...fun, behind it. It's a good little series with decent ideas and a great cast of characters, but it kind of forgets about most of them in favour of Angela and Valkyrie. Not that I'm complaining, but why have characters around if you're not going to justify them being there?

The storyline's pretty decent. Nebula's out for revenge, and steals an Asgardian artifact in order to help her. This leads her into conflict with a few familiar cosmic faces, but the threat level just doesn't feel very realistic. Although she could potentially destroy everything, she's just not a very compelling villain on her own I don't think.

The artwork is also fine. Matteo Lolli's art isn't spectacular, but it's not bad either - he does get a few guest artists in the later issues to prop him up who outshine him though. If you're going to put Stephanie Hans next to anyone, you're going to show them up tbh.

Asgardians is okay. It's nothing too special, but it's a fun little read overall. Just don't have too high expectations and you'll get some good mileage out of it.

Wow, Asgardians of the Galaxy caught me entirely by surprise. When you mash up a pile of C-list heroes in Marvel's cosmic settings, you typically get baffling drivel. Not the case here! There is a clear plot, the heroes are fun and interesting (and even get nice backstory touches), and the whole thing actually ties in to major events in smart ways that don't bog the story down. I'm shocked!

It's a Macguffin plot, but a good one: Nebula's stolen an extremely potent weapon, and now Angela has to put together a team to retrieve it. Both characters have subtler goals in mind, allowing them to be more well-rounded than usual. Angela's band of wayward heroes all get nice, well-timed introductions that flow perfectly with the story. And the stakes are high! The weapon is actually demonstrated to be quite powerful.

The ending leaves a clear opening for further adventures and I am here for it. The art team did a swell job too. If you dismissed Asgardians of the Galaxy because it sounded dumb, well, I would have agreed with you before reading the book. But now? I'm a big fan.

Angela might be the most boring character I've read this year.

Also, the team sucks. Bunch of nobodies no one cares about, at least I don't. Plot sucks, dialogue sucks, the attempts at jokes between the D-Listers suck. Everything here sucks and I regret buying it.

I never liked Angela in any comic i read, thought I'd give this a try cuz it's Cullen and I like him most of the time but it did nothing for me. I'm pointing all the blame to Angela because the rest of the team sucks and is not interesting, I would give them a try if they were fun to read (example: Superior Foes of Spider-man, a bunch of nobodies that the script made me care the more I read and was fun to read.) But.. this one sucked big time.

I'll continue to read only because of the event, in hopes it will get better because of War of the Realms.

Ps. I doubt it will.

I really love the characters of Valkyrie and Angela; it has been somewhat mystifying to me all of the haters and nay-sayers. I think Angela is a super cool character - however this volume showed her a little lacking. She wasn’t as three dimensional as she has been in other titles.

Other than that I thought this was a pretty good start to a new series.

I forgot to put that this was part of the ‘what to read after seeing Endgame’ recommendations (I already had it because again, I love Angela). I would disagree with this recommendation. The only applicable item is the title and a few of the characters, who tend to act differently in the comics vs MCU. I think someone reading this that only watches the films would not have enough context and would not find this terribly enjoyable.

I love Angela. She's one of my favorite characters in the Marvel universe, and she and Sera are one of my favorite couples. Most of that is thanks to the excellent writers who attend her, so when I saw Marguerite Bennett wasn't writing this comic, I was wary. I went into Asgardians of the Galaxy, Vol 1: The Infinity Armada with low expectations, and, I'm sad to say, the story didn't even meet those.

This by-the-numbers space opera is so apparent in how it's just ticking boxes that I was bored to tears. I have read this story before in a hundred other Marvel comics, and Cullen has nothing fresh to say. The outlandish plot, costumes, and poses; the outright character assassination of Nebula, Angela, Loki, and Valkyrie; the humdrum, standard art: I expect that from 1950s comics, but we are better storytellers now. Cullen managed to clear the hurtle of acknowledging Valkyrie and Angela's queerness, at least, but not before Thunderstrike got some homophobic microaggressions in.

Another reviewer mentioned that this comic reminds them of what is wrong with Marvel Comics today, and I agree. Marvel owns such interesting characters, with such great potential, but wastes them on pointless plots that mean nothing and have little impact. They don't uplift readers, provide comfort, or inspire them to be better people, or you know, anything a hero is supposed to do.

The two volume limited series "Asgardians of the Galaxy" is a fast fun paced adventure romp that ties together many of the the supporting characters from the Thor comics. As such, these books are essentially a mini cross-over event that does not feel like a cross-over event.

It helps to have read a lot , and I mean a lot, of Thor comics from recent years. Otherwise the reader will have to constantly check some fan wiki or other to figure out who the characters are. That being noted, the massive ensemble of characters is really what these books are about. In fact, Thor takes a back seat and barely appears. Loki, or more to the point , one particular Loki does show up and play a key role, but the real focus on the books is characters like Annabelle Riggs, Brunhilde-Valkyrie, Thunderstrike, Skurge, Angela, Throg - The Frog of Thunder, Urzuul, etc., etc. . There are also some good showings of characters from the Guardians of the Galaxy and Ravagers teams.

Of the two volumes, the first "Asgardians of the Galaxy: The Infinity Armada", is the more tightly constructed and cohesive. The second, "Asgardians of the Galaxy: The War of the Realms" should not be dismissed though, since it ties up a key story line from the first volume and serves as as an introduction to the "War of the Realms" crossover event.

*Read for the YA Reading Challenge 2020*

Not great, not terrible. This is like a 3.5 star book, it's just hard to get invested in some of these characters I've never met before. It was fairly fun for a rag-tag team of misfits type book. This is "War of the Realms" adjacent, but not being current on that story line didn't take me out of this one. I didn't realize that there was a frog with the power of Thor, but I'm here for it. This was a nice distraction and a fun space-book.

Mildly entertaining... I wonder, did this series only get written because of Thor's laugh line at the end of Avengers Endgame? The heroes fighting in this volume are all strictly C or D list. The idea of having Angela, a black hole of charisma, leading the team is a total joke. She has zero personality. Adding in Skurge, Thunderstrike Jr. (?!?),Brunnhilde (Valkyrie), and, who could forget, Frog Thor (!) has to be some elaborate gag by the boys at Marvel. ("Guys, listen to this. You know how Thor made that "Asgardians of the Galaxy" joke at the end of Endgame? Let's make that! This is totally gonna suck, but let's sweep up all the weakest characters who are in any way Asgard-adjacent and have them star in their own series! It'll be hilarious!") I picked this one up from the library because of the title alone (it obviously evokes the Guardians of the Galaxy, a favorite of mine) but it sat on my shelf for over a month. It has smash 'em up fights and some lame jokes like a Guardians, but is completely inessential.

I like much of the art. The story is kinda crap.

Also: Throg (frog Thor. Because, of course). WTF, Marvel? Are you just gonna go to the zoo every time you need a ridiculous character?
Allow me:
Thpanda (panda Thor)
Thechidna (echidna Thor)
Thcoati (coati mundi Thor. Pronounced 'thquaty')
Thloth (not the fastest Thor)
Thormoeba (a micro-Thorganism, if you will)
Thpangolin (you get the idea)
Thwombat
Ooh! Wait-- THORANGUTANG!

My work here is done.

Fun romp, as a bunch of Asgardian c-listers band together on a quest into space.

I like all those things.

Goofy fun that gets a bit derailed by War of the Realms and then kind of ran out of steam.
Wether the plan all along was the title would only last until the crossover or if we were unlucky, I don't know.

Nothing earth shattering, but a fun read.

This spins out of "Infinity Wars" and by that I mean it makes two references to vague plot summaries from Infinity Wars. You could read the back of the book advert for Infinity Wars and know more than enough to read this. The short of it? Gamora did stuff, Nebula is jealous and is doing some other stuff to make senpai mad. Enter this new team of Thor-adjacent characters to fight.

This is a book made for me. Not in execution or anything like that. But I love and will read any Thor-related book and this cast of characters is full of randoms I want to see doing more. Angela is back, after her incredible trilogy of books by Kieron Gillen and Marguerite Bennett! Throg is the MVP! Skurge, newly returned to life (for reasons that still elude me), is here with a more sober approach to life than he had before. Thunderstrike! Valkyrie! The Destroyer armour, piloted by one of my favourite characters! It's a cast made to interest me and people like me.

Which is to say it doesn't sell well and not many people will care about it. Which is a shame! The MCU has Thor adventuring the cosmos and the slate of big line-wide crossover events are all Thor-related, so it's the perfect time to do some adventuring. Underappreciated but exciting characters have so little story about them that Cullen Bunn can go in so many new directions to give them a chance to show why they're so cool. THEY FIGHT ZOMBIE ASGARDIANS IN SPACE! What's not to love?

This is some ultra-niche cult series that never got a following and was probably never going to. It makes some mistakes, and is tied to an event that is utter garbage so no one is going to be doing deep dives looking for more things branded with "Infinity Wars". But I am so very glad it exists, and wish that it had more time to tell a story about these funky Asgardians fighting mobs of creatures throughout the cosmos. In the end it's all set-up for the upcoming War of the Realms event that it also never gets to affect very deeply and that's a shame.

In my dream world, a series made up of random Asgardian characters sailing the cosmos with an incredible team name would run for dozens of issues. But it won't. It doesn't. And it spends all of this volume being related to one event, only to spend the other half of the series trying to relate to another event, and as a whole doesn't get its own identity. This series is going to be known for some random status quos to pop up in later books down the line and people will go "Huh? When did that happen?" And will go back and find the Asgardians of the Galaxy issues and go "Oh that's really neat it's a shame this series didn't last long." There's really cool stuff here, I want more.

I read this because I love Angela (though after her stand-alones she's mostly reduced to cameos and has lost her personality I still hope she'll make a come-back) and I try to keep an eye on all Lokis and their timelines (a confusing endeavour). Was pleasantly surprised by Valkyrie and Annabell as well (and I guess other characters also had their moments). Many queer women, which I do like very much...

Other than that though I found it too episodic for my tastes and glossing over the things I would have found interesting to get to another battle scene. I do know that's how many superhero comics work, but I find myself annoyed nevertheless and skip all the battles to get back to what's actually going on. It's as if someone decided fighting is what we want to see in a comic, but it's boring. And the art and current costume design is nothing special either to make me tolerate it (Angela has had some costume design that is less metal bikini, why have they reverted to this one?). Give me volumes with a cohesive story and characterization, please! Those are my favorites. At least make the battles meaningful, if you have to have a ton of them.

Anyway, I'm very sad for my favorites, but this is just mediocre comicwork... If there weren't these little character moments and I wasn't feeling generous I'd probably give it 2 stars.

This was a very fun opening storyline with a great ensemble of heroes (not all of whom are entirely heroic) including the frog Thor, THROG! Which immediately bumped it all the way up to 5 stars. Also once again a good indicator as to how the Marvel Comics Universe has borrowed good ideas from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the villain of the tale is Nebula, drawn to look exactly like Karen Gillan's incarnation of the character. But most of all I enjoyed this book for taking some several Thor-related concepts and pushing them outside of the Nine Realms, into other areas of the Universe, with some cool and interesting thoughts on how other alien civilizations' pantheons would work and interact if the entire universe were your canvas. Which, in the cosmic comics like this one, it absolutely should be.

I've also been reflecting a bit lately on my personal history with Marvel Comics ever since I was a kid so if you want to check out my blog, you'll find those posts here: http://parentheticalasides.blogspot.c...

I jumped onto Asgardians of the Galaxy because Thor is one of my favourite characters; however, to my surprise I found that this graphic novel also included other favourites- Valkyrie and Thunderstrike ... well, at least the original Thunderstrike's son.

In this first volume, Nebula (a daughter of Thanos) hunts down a mystical Asgardian horn that calls upon the dead gods and allows the wielder to control them. This is where Angela (Thor and Loki's half-sister); Valkyrie (who shares a life force with human archaeologist, Annabelle Riggs); Thunderstrike, Skurge the Executioner (who just escaped Hel); The Destroyer (controlled by one of Loki's shades); and an enchanted frog with the power of Thor, called Throg; set out to stop Nebula from trying to take over the galaxy.

It's a great read if you're into the characters of Asgard, as well as Guardians of the Galaxy.

I picked this up entirely because I'll try anything from Cullen Bunn, who is one of my favorite writers (and lucky for me, very prolific, too). The cast of characters is a real bag of outcasts, from Frog Thor to the ever-changing origin Valkyrie, The Executioner, some character from Neil Gaiman, and Thunderstrike's Son cosplaying as Strong Guy from X-Factor, which confused the hell out of me. They're joined by an oil foil of Thor's to try and stop Nebula from doing more damage than she already has, mixing it up with Sh'iar and a nice cameo from Thor.

It's not earth-shattering, but it is *is* a lot of fun. Very much in the old-school Marvel Manner, but with the stakes ramped up to 11, which is both good and bad. There are quite a few artists on this one, but it holds up pretty well and they tell Bunn's plot effectively.

I dug this hidden gem. You might, too.

I feel like this could have been better, and that starts with the roster. Angela and Valkyrie are fine, and I'll even take Throg for the amusement value. But surely there was a better Asgardian hanging around than Skurge, who I can only assume is here because of the prominent part he played in Ragnarok. And Kevin is just a waste of space. The plot felt half-baked, though I did like the resolution, and I'm invested enough in enough of the characters to keep going.

I wasn't quite expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did but then this title clearly tries to pander to fan sensibilities by having the shadow of kid Loki at the heart of things together with an unusual crew of Asgard-related figures off on some big mission. The book has its moments of comedy without resorting to full-on madcap antics or that sort of foolishness.

That was entertaining. It was like a good Guardians of the Galaxy story but with Asgardians and Asgardian adjacent marvel characters. So lots of action and a surprising amount of introspection from the characters. Can't say more without spoilers so if you need something good to read give this story a chance.

Ugh, this was such a waste.

Cool idea for a much larger story becomes a yawn fest. Some despite having very high stakes, all tension has been drained from the story and plot. Angela and Brunhilde deserve better than this.

I'm liking the story. Some of the characters are new to me, but some are not.

I liked the different art styles in the flashbacks, too! It was really cool seeing the perspectives from the characters - how they see the world, in a sense.

Cool read, definitely enjoyed it!
