I love these Companions for the Journey books. This might be the first one I’ve read where I’ve read a good bit of the spiritual master’s writing, though I’ve only read a fraction of what Merton wrote. Each devotional includes a bit of background, a selection from Merton, and a reflection. They each end with a series of questions, as well as suggestions for practice. This is where I admit I do not take full advantage of these books as I usually read them first thing in the morning and do not come back, or go do, the practices suggested.

Overall, this book delivered a good snapshot on Merton’s life and work. Of course, I want to go read more Merton now. But I also want to go back through some of the books in this series…

So far my favorite Companions for the Journey book. Brings out so many nuances of Thomas Merton's heart and character which are easy to connect with and relate to. Lots of great question for meditating on and pondering or journaling about.
