Vengeance on Tyneside is the third book in the 'Agnes Lockwood Mysteries' written by Eileen Thornton. I've previously read the first two installments in this cozy series and was excited to devour this third one during the last few days. The books revolve around Agnes, a ~50ish widow with two grown sons, who has moved back to a place she once lived in years ago. In the past two books she had a flirtatious relationship with a detective on the police force, but in this one, they've officially become a couple. The only problem... Agnes feels an obligation to meddle, and she's often the one to stumble upon a body in the oddest of places. It makes for a good read!

In Vengeance, she's walking near the river when a faint voice calls out for help. By the time Agnes calls for an ambulance, the woman is too injured to further help. Agnes tries to let the situation go, and she takes a room in a hotel that she has been frequently living in while looking for a new flat to buy. It's then she realizes some of the employees at the hotel might be involved in the murders. Two more people are killed, and a third is seriously injured. Who is behind these awful killings? And what are they trying to accomplish? Agnes works with her taxi cab driver to travel all around town collecting clues and following the police, including her detective boyfriend, Alan.

Alan tries to be understanding, but he just wants her to stop interfering in his case, especially when the Superintendent wants a quick arrest. Agnes believes they've arrested the wrong guy and sets out to prove it. Unfortunately, it kills much of the romance between her and Alan and almost drives them apart. By interviewing hotel employees, some passersby and a few friends of the victim, Agnes begins to piece together the gravity of the situation but puts herself in danger. Luckily, someone comes to her rescue before she ends up the final victim. I would never stay in that hotel if I valued my life. Phew, she is one lucky dame when it comes to visiting that storage room. Ouch!

Thornton has created quite an elaborate protagonist. She could match Poirot and Marple with her eccentricities, and there are moments I'm dumbfounded at how she gets away with getting so involved in a murder investigation. At the same time, it creates such clever tension, I enjoy all the impacts she creates with her insinuations and prying ways. I'm not confident this police force would solve the crimes without her help. Thornton's simple but direct dialog and personalities find fun ways to clash, leaving readers shaking their head at all the antics. While it's not outwardly funny / sarcastic, sometimes it comes across that way purely by body language or what isn't being said between Agnes and whomever she's chatting to. It's a great technique from this savvy writer.

The books are easy to read... easily devoured in 3 hours. I split it in two sessions, but I could've quickly and happily read through it all at once. Agnes is clearly pictured--Thornton ensures we know who she is and what she is capable of. While she has minimal cohorts, the few who do help always make for good entertainment and action. We haven't met her family yet, and I'm hoping in the future, Thornton throws us a visit or two to see if anyone can possibly put Agnes in her place. So far, she gets away with everything... but every hero needs an antagonist. I'm dying to meet Agnes's future friendly foe!

Kudos to Thornton for delivering another fine installment in the series. It's light reading, more about the process a nosy woman goes through to solve a crime with minimal access to technology and evidence. She relies on her intuition and old-fashioned techniques to break a case. I like those kinds of mysteries, and I recommend this one to anyone else who does too.

Agnes in peril

Agnes Lockwood returns, in another tale that makes you wonder if Newcastle has become the
murder capital of England. It seems wherever Agnes, the Grim Reaper is never far behind her. This time she actually stumbles across the victim of a stabbing who dies in her arms. From that moment our amateur slueth is determined to find out who killed the young woman. As always DCI Alan Johnson is on the case, with Sergeant Andews becoming frustrated at Agnes's involvement even though she keeps piecing the clues together. When two more murders follow in short order, Johnson is worried that Agnes could be setting herself up as the killer's next target, and so it transpires.
An unlikely killer with an even more unlikely motive gets Agnes all to himself and...no spoilers from me. You'll have to read it to find out what happens. Definitely a cozy mystery as opposed to more meaty fare, no blood and gore in sight. And what surprised me, witb a lot of police officers involved in the case, I didn't come across one swear word or profanity. Refreshing in today's world. All in all a damn good read.

An intriguing mystery

This is the third story featuring Agnes Lockwood and DCI Alan Johnson. Agnes has returned to Tyneside and is staying at the Millennium Hotel. When she finds a young woman who has been stabbed, she calls for emergency assistance. The young woman is rushed to the hospital but cannot be saved.

Agnes saw the young woman earlier in the day and observed her arguing with a man. Was he her assailant? Then another young woman is stabbed. And another.

Agnes is a lovely character who refuses to hide her intelligence or let others talk down to her. Even though she is forbidden to 'meddle' in the case, she always contributes to its solution.

Vengeance on Tyneside
Agnes Lockwood seems to be a magnet for getting involved in murder cases. When she hears the voices and screams of a young woman behind the trash bins, she rallies to her aid hoping to safe her life. But, something about this young girl is family as she remembers seeing the red dress, noticing her and a young man arguing earlier in the day as she peered through her window in her hotel and using her binoculars could recount the entire incident. The young man seemed violent and upset with this young girl and she managed to get away but what or who was he looking at? When the final scenes are done when the EMT’s arrive who is the man taking pictures and how would his photos set Agnes on a course of action once again to learn his identity, why she thinks she was the target of who he was staring at and how once again her boyfriend DCI Alan Johnson would have to take action to curb her curiosity and lower her danger level or else she might be the next victim of Vengeance on Tyneside.
As the story pushes ahead Agnes becomes involved in wanting to learn more about his mysterious man as we learn that the victim Wendy Hamilton did not survive her injuries and that even her own family was not aware of her actions or what kind of life she lived. When the medical examiner comes out with some startling information about something related to her medical condition, it sets Agnes off on her own path of investigation as DCI Alan Johnson and his Sergeant embark on their own. But, no fingerprints on the weapon, no DNA on her clothes and little else to go on how would they proceed? The key Agnes thought was in the photographs that were taken, and that Alan made sure that she goes a copy of. Just what was she going to do next and why did she think about buying property there and not remaining in her luxury hotel?
At times Agnes has too much time for herself and while having something at a local café, the photographer approaches her, and the encounter is chilling, and she gets the feeling that he’s not done with her yet. Wanting to impress her with his photographs and disappointed that she did not make a fuss over him, who was the woman that was angry at his actions towards Agnes and why did she make it seem that he was flirting with her putting Agnes in the limelight once again? What about the property that she wanted to buy, and would Alan want to live there, or does he prefer the hotel?
Does Agnes ever do anything but on impulse? But there would be two more attacks and one would be fatal as DCI Alan Johnson and his team must do more than sort of the murders and the latest attack on another young girl. But Agnes won’t let things drop and when she sees the sergeant at the Lift and questions why it was not working will she realize that there have been two more murders and want to be part of the investigation?
Lives are at stake and those that worked with the three young women cannot understand the motive behind the stabbings and yet one photographer seems to be at every scene looking to rise above the others and great hype for himself, but why and how does he know about the stabbings before everyone else?
When Agnes sets her mind to something and she decides to inform someone that he’s a prime suspect and escorts him to the police station, she takes a quick trip out of there, leaving this person alone and sets her sites on the hotel supervisor hoping that she will work with her to learn more about the staff and the suspect thinking she can once again solve the murders and the stabbings.
But what will happen if she interferes and goes too far? What about her relationship with Alan? Things get tense and words are spoken as both Agnes and Alan stand firm by their convictions are harsh tones come through both characters and you get the feeling that things might turn in the wrong direction. Alan’s upset that she was with another man having champagne and yet it was nothing to get in a huff about and Agnes did not like the way he spoke to her but that did not stop her from interfering in the case. Larry Parker is the prime suspect in the murders and the stabbing and now there is another death of a man. Just who this man is and how is he linked will shock readers.
Things get even more tense as Agnes has second thoughts about what she learns about Larry Parker, Alan learns some information that might change it all as Parker now has a high- priced solicitor and things could take a downward turn for everyone. Just who stabbed the two women and what does the third one that survived reveal? Things between Agnes and Alan seem to be frayed and Andrews his sergeant is battling his own private wars and demons.
When the pieces fall into place and Agnes questions the staff supervisor and then the manager you begin to realize that someone is hiding something. There is a connection between all three women that were attacked but that is for the police to release and readers to learn when you read this outstanding novel. Once again Agnes proves that her processes of deduction might be more sound than that of the police and putting herself in danger once again will she get saved in time as once again author Eileen Thornton takes us deep inside the mind of a well-organized murderer thinking that nothing will stop what this person wants and the motive for murder well that’s something else you will have to learn from Agnes when she once again solves the case. Tenacious, impetus, hard headed at times and never easy to deal with once she gets a mind on track to solve a murder. Justice will be done at all costs but when will they put her on the force as a consultant after all she is equally as good as Jessica Fletcher, Ms. Marple or even my favorite Hetty Winthrop. Added in what about her relationship with DCI Alan Johnson well when you read the final scene you decide. Once again, my favorite author from Scotland delivers a suspense filled novel with a serious twist, some humor and two well matched characters but which one will get the last word?

Great to see Agnes back in action. Readers of previous stories in this series will know that where Agnes is murder soon follows.

Agnes loves nothing more than getting involved and helping the local police. DCI Alan Johnson is even more keen to protect Agnes since their friendship has deepened. However Agnes being Agnes can't resist helping.

Is her help useful or does she put her life in danger and give Alan more headaches?
All I can say is you will enjoy finding out.

This is proving to be an excellent series and I look forward to more.

Vengeance on Tyneside - Review by Martha A. Cheves

Perhaps she was allowing her over-active mind to take control. She had done that twice before in recent months and both times it had almost taken her to the point of being murdered. Maybe this time she should walk away. But when she heard the cry again, she knew she couldn't do that. Someone needed help. Looking around, she realized the sound was coming from the row of rubbish bins lined up by a wall, not too far from where she was standing... having reached the rubbish bins, she took a deep breath before peering behind them. For a moment, despite having prepared herself for the worst, Agnes was stunned at the sight of a young woman lying there. Her hands were clutched to her chest, desperately trying to stem the flow of blood streaming from her body and pooling on the concrete ground beneath her.

Agnes Lockwood has just returned from a trip to the coast. Her plans are to meet with DCI Alan Johnson for a nice quiet evening. Well, she soon finds out that the nice quiet evening won't be so quiet after all. She ends up finding herself in the middle of not one murder but 3 plus an attempt. What do these people have in common? Can she and the DCI find out and stop them before more occur?

This book had me fooled from the beginning. I had four suspects. The person I had as my major suspect turned out to be innocent. That narrowed it down to three. I was close but still didn't come up with the real killer. And Author Eileen Thornton didn't disclose the killer until the last few pages. If you like a good suspense, this is one you don't want to miss.

This book also left with an opening for the next book, which I hope makes it my way very soon.

A Geordie Mizz with Fizz, Marple.

I am not a great fan of police procedurals I often say and then, I read a lot of them. But, they have to have something that hooks me more than just a good plot and, not necessarily a vintage car or an irascible gentleman Detective Inspector with the woes of the world on his shoulders.

This book has it all, an excellent mystery, believable red herrings and blind alleys and, I immediately engaged with Agnes Lockwood, a feisty middle aged widow of means, returned home to Newcastle where she grew up and has formed a love interest with a Detective Chief Inspector of the police – a fascinating relationship it is too; nosy cow, or amateur super sleuth and, I loved it; “Agnes, leave the detection to the police, please …” Oh yeah, like that is going to happen…

3 stabbings of 3 separate women, no links and, after the third there is an obvious perpetrator. The police arrest him and, Agnes proceeds to point out the errors of their case, to the chagrin of her on / off DCI, copper, Inamorato. She even engages a hot-shot defence solicitor for the accused. Would this be a good time to suggest that the Detective with thunder and lightning clouds over his head, move in with her and they buy a flat together? And, isn’t it lovely when a man flounders to understand a woman…?

The storyline that follows is as good as the old Hollywood romance films of tug and war between the man and woman interlaced within a great whodunit narrative and, I am a sucker for it.

No plot spoilers, but this story intrigues and captivates as does the relationship of Agnes and her DCI. This is book 3 of the series and I now feel compelled to read books 1 and 2 whilst waiting for a book 4.

Five stars and my recommendation – Eileen Thornton has a winning series.

A FIVE star series continues! YES!

When a faint cry for help leads Agnes to a badly wounded young woman wearing a striking red dress, she’s determined to do ALL she can to help find out who would have done such an awful thing. The more DCI Alan Johnson tries to get Agnes to remain uninvolved, the more determined Agnes becomes … especially when it becomes clear that the lady in the red dress won’t be the only victim of “ Vengeance on Tyneside”. Packed with plausible suspects, delightfully diverse characters, and a plot that kept me interested, entertained and listening late into the night, “Vengeance on Tyneside” is a brilliant addition to a fantastic series! The characters continue to grow and develop brilliantly, as do the relationships between them! They feel so realistic! There is just enough of everything; mystery, suspense, thrills, and tension, AND I’m never left hanging on the edge of my seat too long before there are answers or resolution, and I LOVE THAT. I also love that the story is told via smooth, perfectly timed, clear, emotionally appropriate narration that beautifully brings the authors vision to life! This is truly a five star presentation across all categories and I loved everything about it!

This is the first book in the series that I have read or listened to a narrator/reader.

Agnes, our amateur sleuth is walking near the river when she hears a faint cry for help. Upon inspection, she realizes she has seen this woman several times during the day.
The woman does not survive the knife attack. Agnes is curious and everyone is a suspect. She currently resides in a hotel, the Millennium Hotel, as she is looking for a place to live permanently. Agnes has recently returned to the village she used to inhabit. She suspects several hotel employees but remains a resident.

DCI Alan Johnson, her significant other is a detective. He wants her to stay out of his investigation. His boss is looking for a quick resolution but Agnes doesn’t agree with the conclusion.

I found this interesting, well-written, and page turning. The characters drew me in and I wondered will Alan & Agnes’ relationship survive or just be on the rocks for a while? How can he believe he can forbid her from snooping?

I found Sergeant Andrews a good partner for DCI Johnson. I was left wondering about Morris at the end of the book.

I listened to this book while running errands.

Here we go again.

The author Eileen Thornton continues with an excellent story like all her mysteries.

I have no idea how CSI Officer Alen keeps making the biggest mistake courting miss’s Lockwood, it’s always her way or no way, a little argument and the supposed love is gone, I truly don’t know how a man can live with someone like that, breaking the law letting civilians interfere with his investigations would get any officer immediately fired, if it was me I’d run across the world so fast and as far away from her as possible.

I have a feeling that the author Eileen Thornton is very similar to the character or wishes to be.

As usual the narration by Deborah Balm was done beautifully for each of the characters in this story.

Still a good mystery
with a nice spin
after all.

Agnes Lockwood has a definite tendency to run across dead bodies! And being an amature sleuth she insists on helping solve the cases-despite her her DCI boyfriend, Alan Johnson, not wanting her to. Of course she is usually the one who can actually think out of the box!

This is a very convoluted case involving a couple of deaths. The police think they know who it is--Agnes thinks they are wrong and proceeds to investigate on her own. Which causes problems with said boyfriend!!

Then Agnes herself is caught by the killer---

Lots of twists and turns --you will probably not guess who the real killer is until it is revealed!

This is a clean murder mystery series with lovable characters!! It reads fast-mainly because I doubt you will put it down until the end!

5 Star review Vengeance on Tyneside (Agnes Lockwood Mysteries #3) by Eileen Thornton

Audio Review:

Both the author Eileen Thornton and narrator Deborah Balm are relatively new to me. As with the previous book I listened to in this series, I was riveted from start to finish.
Agnes Lockwood finds herself with yet another dead body in front of her.

Agnes reminds my of Jessica Fletcher from Murder She Wrote, on om my favourite series in fact, except of course she is British. The narrator really brought this book to life for me and did a good job keeping me entertained. This was a a book filled with intrigue and suspense which kept me riveted as I listened to this story. The added bonus of the romance between

Another great installment in the series. Agnes Lockwood is back in Tyneside, and this time she's considering a permanent relocation. However, her propensity to stumble upon dead bodies is giving her pause. What is it about her old hometown that seems to bring the dead bodies and suspicious characters across her path? She wonders if this is truly what she wants as yet another mystery unravels of a man stabbing young women associated with employees of The Millennium Hotel. Unfortunately, this case takes a twist when she finds herself at odds with the detectives investigating the case. Can she really start a new life here? Or is she better off away - and alone?

BOOK THREE..A GREAT READ.

Anges Lockwood quickly finds out that DCI Alan Johnson seems determined to keep her from meddling in the new case, even though she was the one to find the poor young girl, who doesn't survive the brutal stabbing attack. This leaves Anges more to ponder on, not just the case but her love for Alan. But, then Anges isn't one to hold back her thoughts or actions. When another girl is stabbed, and dies, Anges can be very stubborn, as Alan, knows. But, Alan can be a wee bit jealous when it comes to his love for, Anges.
The three books can be read separately, but my personal opinion, is to read them in order.

She did it again! She absolutely did it again. Books 1 & 2 were great books that kept me involved throughout. Then book 3 and she showed me no mercy. She already knew I would stay up til after midnight to finish it. And then she left me hanging. I’ve seen no sigh of book 4, yet I need closure. Yes she did it again. I guess I’ll just have to patiently wait, and hopefully see. My thanks to author Eileen Thornton for a job well done!

a Really good detective story for a light read

I enjoyed all the 3 Books in this series . there was murder, and several attempted murders. A nice sprinkling of light romance. I don’t think this is the end of the series as there were quite a few loose ends which would lead into another story. Sad Morris did not come out of this well after he had saved a life in a previous book.

Vengeance takes many forms

This charming series follows Agnes as her curious mind unravels clues to three murders. She knows that the police have the wrong man, and she is determined to prove him innocent. As clues pile up, she starts to doubt herself and her relationship with Alan. What links the three victims and who would want to take vengeance out on them?

Good plot

1. The author likes the NCIS TV series !
2. Good story however , perhaps written too quickly due to the number of typos I found .
Agnes is stubborn and Alan is jealous . Put a bit of a mess in the relationship . Lol

won’t follow these folks

Ok story, but I almost didn’t bother to finish it because the writing is very amateurish. Moreover the relationship between two middle-aged people was seriously immature. On again then off again, up then down. Most people outgrow that silliness.

Unrealistic

The interactions between the characters was totally unrealistic. The arrest was made on no evidence. The language was childish. I soldiered on beyond half way then gave up and skimmed to the end to confirm that I had got the correct murderer, which I had.

In this review I will not say much about the story. Agnes is Agnes, and as usual she is in the midst of a murderous person's activities. Alan is his usual self, a cop through and through, and protective of Agnes. The rest of the story you will have to read in order to understand why I give it five stars. The story line is very well drawn. The characters are presented with enough flesh to make them seem real. The mesh of the story with characters is brilliantly done as always in Eileen Thornton's books. What more could you ask for. And easy five star rating.

Agnes and finding a body seem to go hand in hand. Even though Alan tells her not to meddle. She owes it to the woman who died in her arms.
Their romance has stepped up to be known as a couple now.
