Sarah Grace Grzy is a voracious reader, and if it weren’t for this crazy thing called 'Life,' she’d be tempted to spend all her days in front of a wood stove, book in one hand, coffee mug in the other.
A lover of learning, she finds enjoyment in many things and has more hobbies than she knows what to do with. Sarah Grace is a freelance web and graphic designer, and when not working, spending time with her ever-growing family, or reading, she can be found painting, playing the piano, or fangirling with her sisters and friends. She inhabits the State of Great Lakes, and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else—unless it meant she could have a baby penguin, in which case, she’d gladly move to the South Pole.
Suicide is such a hard topic .. .. .. and yet, I feel as though Sarah Grzy has done it justice in this concise little story. So many feels contained in so few words. So much pain is difficult to describe, and just as I was getting into the emotion it was over.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, correct? This is pure beauty .. .. ..
If you loved “Live Without You,” you’ll also love this glimpse into Ezra’s past and what he had to confront during a hard time in his life. Yes, it’s a prequel, but don’t read it first!
I love Ezra. He's great. One of my favorite characters. He has a lot of heart. I knew that he tried to commit suicide from reading Live Without You.... But having this book about that part of his life, was hard to read about. Suicide is a hard topic, and though I think the author handled it very well and I love the ending and many other factors in the story, it still wasn't my favorite.
Though I have to admit, the author did manage to get me all emotional and the writing was beautiful!
Content in Book:
1. A guy thinking about committing suicide.
Who I Would Recommend This Book Too:
Those who have first read Live Without You, I just don't think you would appreciate this book to the fullest without first reading the book that made this one. Those who want a strong Christian book that talks about a very difficult topic.
I don't usually read stories dealing with suicidal thoughts/attempted suicide, but having read Live Without You and seeing the way the author handled a lot of hard and heavy situations, I decided to risk this one. So glad I did! Over the course of a very short story, we're taken from despair to hope, from isolation to love, from pain to release--and all in a way that shows the darkness as real but the light as even more so. Bravo, Sarah Grace!
I received a free copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own.
Content--a character holds a knife and contemplates suicide; mentions of death
Whoa baby. For being uber-brief, this short story packed a wallop! Yet again, Miss Grzy (pronounced Grizz) blew me away with her poignant writing style and tender but raw representation of a tough topic. This story is for all the dear, troubled souls out there. It’s an exquisite reminder that even in our darkest days, there is hope for a brighter day tomorrow.
Thought very, very short, this book gave (in my opinion) an insightful glimpse into suicide and grief. It's also interesting to see more of Ezra's past. He seems so strong in a good portion of Live Without You, it's... sad but good to see more of his flaws. I was also really surprised and encouraged by his dad's reaction in Live Again.
Content Warning: This is not for the sensitive reader. Suicidal thoughts and almost-attempts.
4.5 stars & 5/10 hearts. Oh my word. This little sorry was so deep and beautiful... I can’t remember if I teared up or not... but it was powerful. So beautiful. And so real. <3 I... I just don't really have any words. <33
A Favourite Quote: "Ezra looked up and glimpsed the pain, the sorrow, the understanding in his father's face. And the tears that slipped from his eyes. He startled, and for the first time, he saw another's pain instead of his own." A Favourite Beautiful Quote: "He could only think of one way to make it all stop. And that's what he wanted. To stop. To stop feeling. To stop the anger that mocked him, ate him. To stop the darkness."
*I received a copy of this book from the author but I was not required to write a review. These are my honest opinions.*
My one complaint -- this was way too short. I loved being able to get a glimpse into Ezra's life before Piper.
But even being short...man, was it descriptive. And it made me teary eyed. The poor guy! But to see where Ezra is here versus where he was when be met Piper -- wow!
Sarah Grace, don't you ever quite writing, 'mkay? You have been given a gift, and I can't wait to see what else you share with the world <3
"And that's what he wanted. To stop. To stop feeling..."
This is a great depiction of suicide and suicidal thoughts. It is a very difficult thing to go through, and Ms. Grzy portrayed that beautifully.
You never know who is struggling with something like this. Reach out. With everything in our world right now, anyone could use an extra amount of encouragement today.
Oh my goodness!! This short story brought tears to my eyes!!! My heart right now!! This story is so sweet and every fan of Live Without You, will love this story!!
This was a powerful short story dealing with suicide. It was exceptionally well written. It also gives some deep backstory to "Live Without You", and is best read after said book. I highly suggest reading it, unless you are sensitive to suicide.

More of a deleted scene than a short story, but still a good edition to the world/series. This needs to come with a warning for the suicide mention though.
