A broken woman finding her path and healing her wounds on her own, while stumbling upon the man that helps her bring her walls down and reach the sentiment of love while acquiring a new aspect of life...

Let me start off by saying that I knew from the start that when I was diving into this baby, I KNEW that the tears would begin and never end. Happy tears, sad tears, angry tears, all the tears! Catherine Cowles has that sort of power and though for some emotional romances may be something out of their depth or of dislike, to me I know which authors I can tolerate and Catherine is an author that I embrace and welcome with opened arms. Her writing brings the best of the words out there, her stories bring the best of my emotions, her end message brings the best of a good time when reading the magic of novels and I am forever enamored by her for sure. This being said, Tessa and Liam's story has officially been added to my favorite's list and my hands are rubbing right now waiting for the next novel, which I might have and idea as to whom it may be.

Now let's talk about the story shall we? Because this novel is one hell of a novel that needs all the praise in the world for sure! We are introduced to the main female character named Tessa, who is running away from her past and an emotionally and physically abusive ex-fiance who will do just about anything to shut her up. These kind of relationships are very common in the real world, so the fact that Catherine wanted to touch this topic does warm up a place in my heart that is cold and lonely. Tessa however, is this strong yet frightened character that also does just about anything to get the life she deserves with peace and harmony. That's when Liam comes in to the picture, ready to battle whatever war it is that Tessa has. Being hesitant about opening up to just simply anyone, Tessa knows that sharing her story as powerful and dangerous as it may be, she cannot put anyone else in danger as she almost did in the past when escaping her ex-fiance. When Liam tries to get involved, not with her past at first but just opening up with her, he knows that this is a battle that he is ready to dive into and get his hands dirty for. Tessa inspires him to write more music, her presence is what makes his fingers itch, his mind runs with ideas for more music. Her artistic skills also enhances with his presence and there is no denying that attraction they have towards each other. To her at first, he is just this LA musician that she should not get involved with for the sake of hiding her true identity, but once she lets that wall down and let's Liam in their chemistry is one that cannot be denied.

Liam knows that messing whatever he has with Tessa is something that he cannot do. Having that love, that compassion and admiration towards her is something that he has never experienced before and the idea, the thought of leaving her or her leaving him is something he will never be able to live with;
"I know we're just getting started, but this thing between us is the most real I've ever felt... Don't squash it because it's your instinct to run..."

Overall, I am truly captivated by the story and the beauty that there is behind the writing of Catherine. Liam and Tessa will forever be engraved in my hearts with how magical and powerful their stories are. Two individuals who are different in every way, finding one common interest and connecting their love is what brings them together as one, and the way one as a reader feels about it is what really draws you in for more. Thank you to Catherine for writing and sharing such a stunning romance novel that no one, and I mean no one should miss out on. Let the beauty of self-healing and love expand from here and be spread to the world! <3

Beautifully Broken Life is book two in the Sutter Lake series by Catherine Cowles. This is my third book by Catherine and every single time I’m just blown away. This book was no exception. I loved every…single…page!!! We have met the two main characters in this book in the previous books, Liam Fairchild, the famous rock star, and Tessa, the very shy baker at The Tea Kettle. Now we get their stories!

beautifully broken life catherine cowles - Google Search

Liam lived in Los Angeles. His face was known to almost everyone, and was constantly dogged by the paparazzi as well as some over zealous fans. The public felt like they owned a piece of him, that they had the right to the parts of him he wanted to keep private. Liam knew both sides of fame, the high he got when he performed, when he made music, and the dark side. When that dark side catches up to him, as well as his label pressuring him to write, he needed to escape. The music just wasn’t coming to him anymore. His friend Taylor now lived in Sutter Lake and he had loved the peace and quiet there when he visited her. So that’s where he headed. Maybe he could clear his head and the music would find him again.

“I was drowning in unmet expectations. I needed a change of scenery.”

woman and horse

Tessa was in hiding, from a past so volatile that if she was found, she would most definitely be dead. Sutter Lake held a connection to a past she knew nothing about. It was a beautiful small town where she could just blend in. She had two jobs, one as a baker in the little restaurant, The Tea Kettle, and one helping to take care of some horses. She kept her head down and didn’t talk unless she had to. But then Liam came in. There was something about him that drew her eyes to him. He didn’t scare her, he made her feel safe.

“Liam Fairchild was a potent mixture of hard lines and smooth edges. And I knew I was sunk.”

kiss

A funny thing happened when Liam was in the bakery near Tessa. The music started to tickle his brain again. Just little snippets trying to come back together. But he knew he had to be careful with her. That something had happened to make her so afraid. He was determined to do whatever it took so she would trust him.

“How could a simple touch undo me? Liam Fairchild must have magic in those fingertips.”

you are everything to me

I loved watching Tessa bloom with the affection from both Liam and from their friends. Her feelings grew fast and strong for Liam. But, the most important thing for her survival was to stay hidden. Liam was famous, people trying to snap pictures of him wherever he went. If just one picture of her ended up in the tabloids, she was finished. How could this ever work?

beautifully broken life catherine cowles - Google Search

Tessa and Liam together was such a beautiful thing. But both are hiding and trying to heal from the darkness of their pasts. And both of their pasts come back to haunt them. I had a feeling that this was going to be a nail biter and oh my gosh, it was!!! Catherine has such a way of blending together sweet romance, sexy, steamy scenes, and suspense! This book had it all. I loved these characters so much. I love this whole group so much. The next book in the series will be Jensen’s story, the owner of The Tea Kettle, in Beautifully Broken Spirit. Catherine Cowles can’t write the words fast enough as far as I’m concerned.

“You make this life so much more beautiful.”

this was too sweet and so predictable i couldnt handle it. im also allergic to ott cliches, and this book was brimming with it. where was the suspense?? i needed more thrill!! also, liam needs to stop his obsession with needing to be referred to as 'masculine' every goddamn minute!! and what's with the sexist teasing?! i know he meant no harm, but i just didnt like hearing it.

this was a failed attempt at suspense romance. between how formulaic the plot was and the writing that didnt really do it for me, the story just fell flat. there were so many interesting themes in this book (e.g. abusive ex-boyfriend, crazy stalker, failing famous rock star), but i feel like they were done very poorly. this is the kind of book that will soon fade into the background in a day or two after you read it.

“Sometimes, it takes life breaking apart for it to get you where you’re truly meant to be.”

Catherine Cowles has already become my auto-buy author and my favourite small-town romance writer. I can never get enough of her books, stories, characters, and alluring mysteries. This is my third book by her, and I am hell-bent on reading every book she has written.

Just like the title suggests, the story is beautiful and broken. It’s about two people who are running from or hiding from lives that have given them nothing but pain and hurt. Tessa, the FMC, is a heroine in hiding—she’s been living in Sutter Lake for two years, has built a safe life for herself, and has sworn off men after running away from her abusive ex-fiancé. Liam is also hiding in Sutter Lake after a tragic incident made him fear his own fame. He’s struggling with writer’s block but finds himself inspired to write music whenever he sees Tessa.

“Why do you put up with…” She trailed off without finishing, as though she couldn’t find the right words.
“Because I think you’re worth knowing.”

Tessa is a kind-hearted woman, haunted by her past, yet she’s also incredibly strong—she ran away, survived hell, and made sure she was safe all on her own. Now, she’s trying to reclaim her life. Her story broke my heart, but I loved watching her slowly tear down the walls she built to protect herself, not just on her own but with the help of the people who love her. Her personal growth and healing journey were beautiful to witness, and seeing her finally live without fear of being caught was deeply satisfying.

“You’ll find your voice again. And I can’t wait to hear what you have to say.”

Liam was perfect. I adored his sweet, tender, and kind-hearted personality—how patient he was with Tessa, how he helped her regain her confidence, and how he earned her trust little by little. He never pushed her; he just waited until she was ready to let him in. His devotion, attentiveness, and understanding were everything, and the way he paid attention to her triggers to make her feel safe and loved was precious and endearing.

“She might not recognize it, but there was a whole slew of people on her team now, and I planned on being the fucking team captain.”

I loved the romance. The chemistry between Liam and Tessa was tangible and amazing. They were perfect for each other, not just because they helped each other heal from their trauma, but because of how deeply they understood one another. Their relationship was beautifully constructed, transitioning from strangers to friends to lovers in a slow, steady, and perfect way. I cherished every moment of their love story, watching them open up to each other about the pasts that had broken them. They both needed someone to trust and love, and though this was the slowest of slow-burn romances—with them intending to stay friends for most of the book—it was executed flawlessly.

“Never apologize for sharing yourself with me. Hard things you’ve been through, amazing things you’ve experienced...I want to know everything. I want it all. Every last piece of you.”

I’m so excited to read the next books in this series, but I’m especially looking forward to Jensen and Tuck’s book! Single mum and brother’s best friend? I already know I’m going to love their story.

I really enjoyed this small town romance! Tessa has been on the run from an abusive husband for the past two years. She doesn't like attention and enjoys her job in the small town she's been living. Liam is also hiding out, but he's hiding for a very different reason. He is a famous musician and stuck in a rut with this music. But the moment he sees Tessa, the music starts to pour out of him. The more time he spends with Tessa, the more he starts to fall for her and the more Tessa confides in him. This was really sweet. I enjoyed how protective Liam was over Tessa and how Tessa slowly started to trust Liam with her secrets and her heart. The small town setting was perfect and, of course, there was a bit of suspense at the end to keep us on the edge of our seat. I'm excited to read more from Catherine Cowles!

Tessa ran from an abusive relationship and ended up in Sutter Lake, in hiding she has spent her time since escaping, trying to rebuild her life and the confidence she has lost, but she's still wary of people, especially men. Enter Rockstar Liam (one of the best-friends of the heroine Taylor from book 1), and she finds herself very slowly finding herself opening up. Liam for his part has found himself unable to do what he loves produce/write music, but whenever he is near Tessa, he starts to hear melodies again. When danger comes calling, both are determined to protect the other.

Loved how patient Liam was, he never comes across as an entitled Rockstar whose lost touch with reality. Tessa has a core of strength that ensures she does more than survive.

I will say I think the danger element of the plot needed a little more teasing out, it was resolved rather fast, and there was a fleeting moment towards the end when some of the dialogue didn't entirely flow as I would have liked, but this was a very small niggle.

This second book in the series was a lovely little morsel, one which can be read as a standalone.

Beautifully Broken Life took me by surprise. I like the storg very much. Miss Cowles done a good job bringing a spitlight on domestic abuse as the center of the story. Although I do not like the stalker twist.

Liam is just swoon worthy. His patience toward Tessa is just so sweet. I always have a soft spoy for patience hero. Tessa is scared at first but then she proved herself as a survivor.

So much like for Beautifully Broken Life.

The way Catherine Cowles has to drawn damaged heroines with shy personalities and no faith in men is sheer ecstasy.

Tessa was running from an abusive ex while Liam was running from his success. Something ugly happened with one of his fans and he wanted to pull away before the media get a hold of the story and twist it. They both end up "hiding" in Sutter Lake.

I was intrigued and wanted to know more about Tessa since her first appearance in the previous book. And I certainly wasn’t disappointed in her character. She was so kind and gentle even after all what she went through. Tessa was always searching for ways to hide or blend into the crowd. Up until Liam, who saw LITERALLY through her.
He was so perfect for her. Patient, understanding and so
attentive and caring, thoughtful around her. (I can go on and on praising Liam🥺😭)

It might have been a five-star read if them being friends had been dragged for a little longer. It kind of bothered me that they confessed their fillings half through the story, and them being a couple the next second, felt rushed. In my opinion it was more fitting regardless to Tessa’ back story for the book to be a real sloooooowburn. But their relationship was so well constructed because they simply were completing each other. The author has a way of building couples with comforting and peaceful bonds that contrast with all the lateral suspense about their past that always come chasing after them.

"How could a simple touch undo me?"

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!!

Ok, now that I got that out of my system....haha!! I love when a story and an author breaks the mold and gives me a read that soars beyond my hopes and expectations. This story was it. This book, it gave me a sense of calm. That's what came over me while reading this unlikely love story full of mystery and desires. Obviously I crave the angsty, nitty-gritty reads, but apparently I like Catherine Cowles' sweetness too. Who knew?? Add to it, this isn't but it is a rockstar romance - but not like your normal, run of the mill ones. So different on every level playing field, and I enjoyed that immensely!

There is an innocence to Cowles' writing. But it's also the type of giddy and excited that makes me smile bigger and happier when I go to recommend a book like this one -- and I will be recommending this one heartily. Not my normal recommendation for heavy and angsty, but definitely an amazing read. I fell into this one immediately after finishing Beautifully Broken Pieces and her smooth transition from one story to the next was followed with ease. I loved that I could have two completely different storylines, thoroughly intertwined with one another, yet ultimately separate. She touched on the reality of some really harsh and painful subjects, but it wasn't the main focus, and the love story and the growth were. These subjects aren't made light of, not by any means, nor was she disrespectful to the intensity of which these subjects can and should be handled. She made it a vibrant part of the story, however, it was character driven so that made it very enjoyable for me. There wasn't any dwelling in the dramatic or sad parts and I appreciated that greatly.

There is a little bit of a romantic suspense to this series with each book so far, and she carried it right over into this one as well. The drama....? Not my favorite kind - again, but it fit the story. So while it was drama, it wasn't annoying. I read with anticipation, because I needed to know the who and the what and the why and see justice, for sure! I really, really smiled throughout this story watching Liam and Tessa fall in love. The tiptoes around the fear, the handholding around the pain, and the love that grew through an elaborate amount of trust.

"Liam Fairchild was a potent mixture of hard lines and smooth edges."

One thing I think Cowles has in the bag is honest, hardworking, emotionally available men.....I love her men. I love the way she writes them. I love the stories they have to tell. I love the way they treat their women. sigh I am just in love. Their patience is of a different breed. Their kindness knows no bounds. Their hearts go above and beyond and their women suffer from nothing but overbearing (in all the right ways) love. I love the visual she gave me, as well as the mentality of them. We have some good men out here in Oregon and "seeing" them in this story just made me smile and be proud. Not quite country, not quite big city. Love it! This story was soooo easy to connect to - gosh, I loved it!!

Does this mean I am turning into a softy? No way. Nuh uh. Can't do it. I need the grit and the turmoil. I like the stomach twisting angst and the headiness that comes with it. I won't lie and say that this is my favorite trope, because it's not. But I will say that this is how I venture into tropes and storylines and new authors - it's when I find an author that can write some specific way and I connect with it. Catherine Cowles is that sweet writer that I can easily connect with her stories and have fallen in love with her. So now I will have to follow her around like a lovesick puppy. #FairWarning

This Sutter Lake Series does carry over many of the characters from Further To Fall, and I reviewed that one HERE. I said in that review how much I loved Cowles' voice, and it's just gotten stronger and stronger with each subsequent book I read. I can officially say I've read ALL her books now. HA! I know...it's only three books, but what a way to start. The excitement I am feeling about the next story has me all giddy!!! Tuck's story in Beautifully Broken Spirit will be an emotional one. This will go live on October 22, 2019. I cannot wait!!! Bring it on!

"He seemed to be a master of gentle pressure. Enough to encourage me out of my comfort zone, but not so much that I felt bullied."

I was really excited for this one, so I had some high expectations so that may be why I'm a little disappointed.

I really liked both MC's on their own and I have a soft spot for relationships that have a victimized FMC and seeing the two characters carefully navigate a relationship and the MMC really taking his time and moving at a pace that makes her comfortable.

But I feel like this wasn't really that...I think Liam had every intention to take things slow and not overwhelm her, but I feel like he was pushing pretty hard and also snapped at her a couple of times unwarranted, so I kept being yanked out of the story because I was wondering what the hell he was doing.

But they did have a lot of beautiful moments and Tessa ended up being such a badass by the end. I would still recommend this series, but it's probably my least favorite of her so far. But obviously still really enjoyable and easy to read 🩷

Tessa is the perfect damsel in distress. 🤌🏼
Liam is the most patient, kind, and caring guy. 🥺

Tessa is in hiding from an abusive ex. She is always on guard and any man makes her feel uncomfortable. Until Liam. God the way he wanted to break through her walls.

”What can I do to make you feel safe?” Stop it Liam I’m swooning! He took his time with Tessa, made her feel comfortable, and handled her with such tenderness it was too much for my heart to take.

These two are perfection together. And this small town drama has me in a chokehold.

Liam is a rock!

Tessa is on the run from a terrible past, and Liam is hiding out from a crazy fan and his hectic life as a musician. I love their story, especially of how Tessa goes from being frightened to becoming a strong and fearless woman with Liam's help.

The only thing I was disappointed in, was not getting a chance to meet Liam's parents, though we heard a little (very little) bit about them. He hinted that his mom would like Tessa and I wish I was able to read about them meeting.

”We’ll find our way, Tessa. Just give us some time.”

Characters
Liam (famous rock star):
Liam was introduced in Book 1. He has writers block and after a issue with a fan, he left LA and headed to Sutter Lake to find some peace and hopefully get his writing back on track.
“I just needed to get away. I was hoping the beautiful sights of middle-of-nowhere Oregon would give me a little inspiration.”
He's a good guy who hasn't let fame go to his head and he's tired of fake, judgmental people who will put others down just to get ahead.
“It gets so old, people wanting a piece of you without caring at all who they’re actually getting a piece of.”

Tessa:
Tessa ran from an abusive relationship and ended up in Sutter Lake. Her mother died during childbirth and she was raised in foster homes growing up. So she has no family and longs to belong and have a family of her own. However, the abuse has left her gun-shy and skittish and it takes a lot for her to trust new people. Because of self-preservation, she keeps everyone at a distance and doesn't allow anyone to get too close. She’s trying to let go of the past and move forward.
”I was building a life. So, it wasn’t as full or carefree as I would have liked just yet. It would be one day. One day, I would be totally free.”

My Thoughts:
“You’ll find your voice again. And I can’t wait to hear what you have to say.”

Liam is the perfect man to help Tessa through the next phase of her life. I loved every single molecule that made up this Hero💘🥰 He was patient and understanding about everything, even her unwillingness to share her story.
”I promise I will do my best to be the man you deserve, someone who empowers you and stands by your side while you fight whatever battles you need to fight.” . OMG. This. Man❣️❣️

It was clear Tessa had suffered abuse, but Liam did not push for details and didn’t push her too far out of her comfort zone (just enough to encourage her to start experiencing life again).
”He seemed to be a master of gentle pressure. Enough to encourage me out of my comfort zone, but not so much that I felt bullied.”
He paid attention to her non-verbal cues and when he sensed she was getting uncomfortable he changed the circumstances and found ways to ease her fear.
Liam didn’t push. He kept things light. The questions he asked Noah and me centered around favorite flavors of ice cream and who would win a fight between Thor and Captain America.”

There was some drama in the story, but it didn’t come from the relationship between the H/h. It came from outside of them, which is one of my favorite types of stories. I love to see the H/h band together to support each other and offer comfort and security from the outside forces that are potentially trying to come against them or harm them.

I had no problem staying engaged with the story. Watching Tessa conquer her fear bit by bit was heartbreakingly beautiful. She suffered, but she courageously ran away and in this book she begins to fight to get her power and her voice back.

It was easy to fall in love with the characters. Both a bit broken and both in a place where they can offer and accept healing from each other. A true connection sometimes needs no words and the way they were able to find the quiet calm and the ability to express creatively while in each other’s presence was magical.
“We settled into our usual spots on the boulder—Tessa with her sketchpad, me with my guitar. We lost ourselves in our tasks, in the beauty around us, in simply being with each other.”

There is a slight element of danger but it actually resolves very quickly at the end of the book. I’m not sure if that bothered me or not. There was a lot of build up about the abusive ex and when he shows up it was over in a blink. Part of me was glad Tessa didn’t have a big ordeal, but part of me me thought....that’s it?? All that build up and then it’s over? Hmm 🤔. Also, it was mentioned that Tessa had grandparents, but nothing came of that. I would have liked to see that story play out a little bit (but in a good way 😉).

Overall I really enjoyed this book. The writing flows well and the story was engaging. It has a small town feel and Tessa’s strength and Liam’s patience and support were heartwarming. Highly recommend.

Catherine Cowles takes us back to the small town of Sutter Lake to bring us one of the most heartwarming, swoon worthy romances filled with elements of suspense and mystery.

As I'm writing this review, my HEART IS SO FREAKING FULL! This love story was so breathtaking! So much passion, heart and soul-stirring moments in these pages.

Tessa was such a strong heroine and her story was so encouraging and inspirational. I won't go into details but in her former life before Sutter Lake, she was in a very abusive relationship. She keeps to herself and holds on to her secrets very tightly. She may seem meek and mild but this woman has such a tower of quiet strength that you cannot help but admire. Liam is the rockstar who has escaped to Sutter Lake to get a break from fame and find inspiration to write his music.

Liam is drawn to Tessa but knows he needs to tread carefully with her. He doesn't know why she is so guarded but he gets that some man must have hurt her pretty bad for her to have such a level of distrust. Gah! This man! He was just absolute perfection! He was so patient, so kind and so tender with Tessa. I loved that while he had that obsessive need to protect his woman, he also helped her to empower herself. His ability to always be there for her as well as allow her to stand on her own too feet mad me FALL SO HARD for this man!

Liam and Tessa's romance took time to build as Tessa let's her walls fall to let him in. Their growing love was so sweet and their sexual chemistry was so palpable. Amidst this love story we have a suspenseful storyline and a few plot twists that keep the whole book that much more entertaining. I seriously LOVE this couple so much! They have my heart and I highly recommend this small town romance!

GAH! Romantic Suspense is a weakness of mine, and this one certainly hit all the marks for me. Beautifully Broken Life is a beautiful tale of romance, but so much more than that. It's a story of grief and heartache. It's a story of accepting the past and learning to move forward in life. It is a story of hope and the strength of love. And it's one that will tug at your heart strings, but leave you smiling and crying tears of joy in the end.

Beautifully Broken Life follows the story Tessa and Liam. Tessa is on the run trying to escape an abusive past at the hands of her ex-fiancee. Thanks to close friend, she has everything she needs to start over in the small town of Sutter Lake. Tessa is a kind and gentle soul who is trying so hard to be brave, but is very frightened of her past. She is always looking over her shoulder with a packed bag nearby, prepared to leave at any sign of suspicion. She eventually settles in, makes new friends and takes on a new job at the bakery, but finds it hard to truly let anyone in. She knows that if her ex were to ever find her, he wouldn't hesitate to hurt or kill in order to get to her.

Liam is a famous musician that hails from LA. His life has been pure hell lately. Dealing with a psychotic stalker and the pressure to produce new music is starting to take a toll. So he escapes to Sutter Lake to spend some time with old friends. Maybe here he can clear his head and lay low for a while. To heal from the darkness of his past, and find the inspiration to get back to writing again. When he spots Tessa in the bakery, he is immediately drawn to her unique beauty. She is just the muse he needs as the words suddenly start flowing again. But getting past her safeguards is not going to be an easy task. Her heart is guarded, and the walls are firmly in place. He will have to tread carefully in the process of trying to earn her trust and love.

Watching Tessa and Liam together was both beautiful and magical. They were both hiding and trying to heal from their dark pasts. Then when their pasts came back to haunt them, this is where things got really intense. The author takes you on such an emotional journey full of angst, drama, romance and suspense. It was so masterfully written and filled to the brim with everything that I love. The characters were wonderful, and the plot was well developed. This book is sure to be a hit as I know it was with me.

‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾☆ 3.5 stars ☆☽༓・*˚⁺‧͙

The beginning was tough. The prologue and the first chapters where we see all the fear Tessa is living broke my heart. This was a nice slow romance.

Tessa
She is so sweet. I liked her a lot. She had this calm sweet aura that I just wanted to hug her. Her falling in love process was slow and gentle. I’m glad that wasn’t rushed. Like just because she likes a guy then suddenly he is everything. She took her time and told him she needed space. Love that for her.

Liam
I liked him. The whole “masculine energy” he kept bringing up was a bit annoying but he was sweet to Tessa. He really loved her and was super gentle with her.

Other people
Jensen is the one who is here the most. But all of them appear here actually. We don’t get to see Noah much, though. Sad for that.

Conflict
I like how the author adds the suspense. Here it was terrifying for my girl and I’m so happy she’s safe now. I didn’t feel like it was rushed and it was a good conflict. I had a few theories and I got like half right, I’m counting it as a win.

Why not 5 stars?
- There’s a scene where Liam tells Tessa to just tell him something. And gets frustrated when she doesn’t. Like dude?? You should be fcking thankful she even let you in. gtfo with that shit.
- I’m aware this story needed the slow placing and slow burn, but between the 20% and the 40% I reallyyyy feel the slowness. I kept craving for more scenes of them together and idk. Not a fan.
- Again, I wished we saw more of the town. I need more of the small-town feels.
- Liam’s stuff was forgotten and just clarified in a few sentences at the end, needed more.

Hmm, if I remember something else I didn’t like I’ll add it!!

But yeah, I liked this story. They made a cute couple but I’m actually very excited for Jensen’s book. I’m curious about her!!! And I need more Noah!!

The beginning was well written and everyone needs a Gena in their life, but it became a little tropey (I realize this is my made up word) and then it became a drama fest. Liam was too good to be true, suuriously and the author maximized the cliches.

It kept me engaged. Not my favorite read, but it could be for someone else. Fast, fun with some suspense.

***3.5 Stars***

Another sweet romance winner from Catherine Cowles. I'm really enjoying making my way through her backlist.

Tessa is in Sutter Lake with a new look and a new identity. On the run from her abusive fiancee, she's found a little bit of peace in this mountain side town as she rebuilds her life.

Liam is a famous musician who's looking for his own slice of peace. The fakeness of Los Angeles and an obsessive fan who's become fixated on him has Liam running to Sutter Lake for some quiet reflection. The darker side of fame has stolen his voice and his muse. All he wants is to make music but nothing happens when he tries.

I really loved Tessa and Liam together. Liam was so careful and considerate of Tessa's feelings and hesitancy to trust. The pacing of their relationship couldn't be rushed and watching them both slowly let their guards down was sweet.

Tessa was strong and a survivor, and I enjoyed watching her bloom as she slowly let folks in and realize that she had a whole community of folks at her back.

Sutter Lake has some amazing people especially the Cole family. This is also one the reasons why I enjoy this series. Beautifully Broken Life is the story of Tessa and Liam. Based off on book 1 I knew Tessa was dealing with some kind of trauma from her past which has made her isolate herself from others especially the other sex. She’s a strong woman who’s endured a lot and here in BBL she finally takes charge and control over her past and her future. Liam is dealing with his own kind of problems. Fame, writers block and a stalker. He finds inspiration and comfort in Tessa and her in him. It takes time but through time and conversation these two people find and see each other. Falling in love.
I enjoyed this story but I struggled with Liam and Tessa’s connection. To me they felt better off as friends and that’s a problem when they’re supposed to end up together. Some times their scenes felt forced just to show how interested Liam was in Tessa and how he wouldn’t give up on her. The overall story was fairly predictable.
Despite my issues I’m still going to keep reading this series because I’m very invested in Jensen’s story and her family.

First Impressions
Beautifully Broken Life is a superb read and Catherine Cowles is always surprising me in how much I fall so hard for her books. And I knew that this one would be a emotional roller coaster and it definitely was and there was something so raw yet vibrant in this story. I fell so hard for our main characters who are just right for each other. They both have some challenging situations that have brought them to Sutter Lake and away from the big cities, but the way in which they are able to connect to each other, the two outsiders is so wonderful to see. This does deal with some difficult situations and may be triggering for some readers, so I recommend checking the author's TW before reading if you are more sensitive. Beautifully Broken Life is a story though that kept me up late reading and I feel no regret, definitely worth losing a bit of sleep.

First Line
My heart beat so fast, it felt as though it were rattling my ribs, straining to get free

The Main Protagonists
The Hero: Liam
Musician, Songwriter, and in a writers block and needing to escape the city.

The Heroine: Tessa
Suffered domestic abuse, on the run, and also dealing with PTSD from the abuse she was dealt and living in hiding.

Summary
Tessa, came to a breaking point and wanting freedom and self-determination and refusing to bow down to her abuser. It took time but she was able to find an escape from being abused and controlled. She finds haven in Sutter Lake and also finding friendships she never expected to find. And when Liam walks into her life, there is a connection between them. But Tessa is determined to keep him at arms length. Liam knows that there is something hurting in Tessa, and is wanting to be the man she needs and to protect her no matter the cost. As trust slowly builds between them, Tessa is able to explore a relationship with Liam she never expected she could have, but will their pasts come and haunt them and keep them from finding their HEA?

What I Loved
There was so much to love about this book. I absolutely adored this couple being together. They have such a beautiful connection, and seeing their struggles from within, really assists the reader in allowing them to connect to the story. Beautifully Broken Life was a story that really resonates from within and its so easy to immerse yourself within this story. Catherine Cowles is such a gifted writer and the way that she is able to create such strong atmospheric vibes and relatable characters you can get behind 100% is so brilliantly conveyed. The romance is what really takes the cake in this book. There is some great friendships that we see of course, and you really fall so hard for the family that is in the series. However, what really will win your heart is the relationship that is built between Tessa and Liam. We know from the previous book that Tessa had so many secrets and Liam himself is running from a toxic situation. And seeing them being able to find what they need in this small town just clicks so quickly for the reader. And their relationship is so gradually built, its not rushed, and so the healing aspects just felt so relatable for me as the reader. To see the slow evolvement of trust and intimacy being built between them.

The plot of the story is quite intense from the mentally unstable stalker that Liam is getting to Tessa's abusive ex, and the drama with the entitled chick from book one who never seems to learn her lesson on how to treat people. It really keeps you on edge and I did seem to see any plot holes. I don't necessarily look for these though unless its super obvious. I really enjoyed the way that the character development is so intertwined in such a balanced way. The writing is so engaging, and Catherine Cowles delivers such strong emotion that has you connecting deeply with the ins and outs of the story. A true keeper.

What I Struggled With
Nothing really, It's not quite a five-star read, but it got very close to one. There isn't anything obvious in the story or any issues that I had.

Overall View
I found Beautifully Broken Life to be a tug at your heartstrings, portray the human condition in a raw and edgy way, but convey the sweet and tenderness which packs the emotional punch! A TREASURE OF A READ!

Favorite Quote(s)
The simple power of feeling seen. Heard. Understood. Believed.

Something told me that Liam was uniquely special. Masculine. Protective. But with the most tender heart at his core. One that cared deeply for others. A heart that yearned for authenticity and truth. Liam Fairchild was a potent mixture of hard lines and smooth edges. And I knew I was sunk.

“Never apologize for sharing yourself with me. Hard things you’ve been through, amazing things you’ve experienced…I want to know everything. I want it all. Every last piece of you.”

Recommendation For Reading Order
You can do either. It will make more sense if you read these books in order for the character connections.

Steam/Spice Explanations

Simmering cup of tea---soft warm touches and light intimacy
Warmin' by the fire- a medium level of sexual tension, a balance of sexual and emotional intimacy, lighter on the details in the sexual moments.
Steamin' up the room -the sexual content is more explicit in the language and tone, heavier amount of sexual scenes.
Blazing fire to the building-The prime focus is the sex scenes, scorching hot, and could burn one. Less focus on the emotional intimacy to the relationship.

Tessa was first introduced in Beautifully Broken pieces as the shy and quiet baker at The Tea Kettle so I was really interested in hearing her story. Tessa arrived in Sutter Lake two years ago after escaping a life that she never wants to return to again. I guess you could say she is ‘on the run’ but for now she feels safe and settled living in this small town, keeping to herself. Some of the people she has met, in particularly the Cole family, have taken her into their circle - no questions asked about her past. She prefers it to be this way.

Liam first visited Sutter Lake a few months ago with his friends, including Taylor when she decided to stay on for a while. He needs to get away from the bustle of L.A. and a looming media storm so revisiting the sleepy town to slip under the radar feels like the best place right now. Taylor is delighted to have her friend back in town. Liam is a very successful, multi album singer and has a bad case of writer’s block. He needs the solace and peace to get his creativity flowing again.

Liam notices Tessa straight away. Initially he thinks she is shy but he soon realises that there is a lot more to this timid, sweet girl. He wants to get to know her and this is something that will take time and patience. Gaining her trust and friendship will be the first step. Tessa is initially skeptical of Liam’s interest in her. She lives a very routined and cautious life. Always on alert for danger and ready to up and leave at a moment’s notice. She has been doing this for two years now and it’s kept her safe thus far.

Tessa is not used to a man being so kind and complimenting her the way Liam does. When he helps her with an animal rescue she begins to let her guard down a little to develop a friendship with him. She enjoys spending time with him and looks forward to their daily interactions. Liam doesn’t know much about Tessa’s past but every day he is falling for this beautiful, sweet girl and he plans to be a part of her future. She gives him inspiration to write songs and he loves how much she is opening up to him.

While all this is developing between them, there are a couple of other storylines playing out in the background which had me nervously turning the pages waiting for things to unravel. I liked the anticipation of knowing something was coming but not sure what it would be. Definitely kept things interesting!

I like series set in small towns and enjoy the little snippets of the previous characters to see how things are progressing with them now. This was a fantastic second instalment in the Sutter Lake series and I cannot wait for the upcoming release of Jensen’s story.
