The world's fastest hedgehog is now on the big screen. Sonic the The Official Movie Novelization captures all the action of the movie in a book small enough to fit into your back pocket.
Sonic the The Official Movie Novelization is a book version of the movie containing all the speedy adventure of the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film in an action-packed chapter book for fans young and old.
My step daughter and I read this book together. She is a big Sonic fan... I’m not so much. However, I really, really enjoyed this book! It was a fun read and quite funny also. I think it’s one we will read over and over again!
I really enjoyed this book because it showed some great parts that were excluded in the movie version. It definitely showed more in-depth characterization for Tom Wachowski and Sonic. The book elaborated on why Sonic considers Tom his only human friend before they met each other, and that is because even though Sonic messed around with Tom’s radar gun at the speed trap, Tom didn’t rat out about it to his department and superiors. Maybe because Tom knew no one would believe a car could move at almost 400m/h but still from Sonic’s point of view, it’s a thoughtful gesture. There’s also a longer introduction about Longclaw being the last of her kind and they talked about the chaos energy in Sonic. Also, Tom already planned to go on a road trip to San Francisco before he met Sonic, and Sonic already knew that Tom is planning to leave Green Hills before they met. Agent Stone was actually the one who visited the Wachowski house at the end. Very good novelisation.

I always find novelizations to be very interesting. like, who are they for? are they for fans? people who want to know the general movie plot ahead of time? kids who are banned from seeing movies and get around it by reading the novelization? i don't know. all i know is that they're very interesting pieces of media.
Having liked the sonic movie, i saw this book in a pile of "books to give away" from my nephew and i figured 'ah the hell with it' and read it.
And, while it's definitely meant for a much younger demographic, i have to say, it was definitely an interesting experience. A quirky thing that i've noticed about novelizations is that a lot of the time they tend to go off early versions of the script. meaning that sometimes there will be scenes and lines of dialogue that 100% were not in the movie. For example, towards the end, the main human character tom crashes his car into robotnik's machine. that 100% didn't happen in the climax. It's amusing and that's why i read these. to see the differences as well as the internal thoughts the characters might have that you can't see in the movie.
All in all, the book follows the story pretty close, but like i said, there are some differences in scenes and lines of dialogue as well as simplifying some of the more complicated scenes. It still manages to keep the overall feeling of the movie which is good though. If i ever come across the 2nd novelization i'll probably read that too. as it's meant for a younger demographic it's written simplistically but in a charming way.
That being said, not a bad novelization of the movie, if not a tad simple. 3 out of 5.
Overall, "Sonic the Hedgehog: The Official Movie Novelization" was a worthwhile quick read. While I was hoping the book would explain some plot holes from the movie and was disappointed, it did include little tidbits of new information that was not in the movie. As an example, the book clarified that Sonic's emotions were what was causing his "chaos power" (these extras can also be seen in the film's deleted scenes). There also were a couple of references I caught that were related to the series that weren't in the movie such as "chaos power", sonic saying "Way past cool!", and a few more.
I was hoping the book would include special scenes and such that didn't make it into the film, but there were very few (and they were so short I don't know if I would call them scenes). Instead of new scenes, the already existing ones were simply tweaked and seemed to me like they were a part of an early draft of the original movie script. For example, the chase sequence on the road was a bit different from the movie and, in my opinion, much less interesting. The point I am trying to make here is that the book would be best described as a shorter version of the movie with slightly worse writing.
Overall, as a Sonic the Hedgehog fan, I found this book to be enjoyable to read and it was nice to see what the movie might have been. After reading the book, I now honestly think Jim Carrey improvised a lot of his lines and made the movie much more funny than the original script. This is just a guess though.
It is targeted at a younger audience and not too long of a read, but if you are a fan of Sonic or the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, then you and/or your child will certainly love it. The relationship between Sonic and Donutlord is still there and fun to read, as well as the different action pieces described between Sonic and Dr. Robotnik. The book does well as an adaptation of the movie, adding subtle changes that longtime fans will appreciate; along with minor details not elaborated on in the movie. Considering the price and entertainment value, I would recommend to any Sonic fan.
This book was fine. It didn't add anything new to the movie, which was disappointing, but I guess this book was targeted for kids (due to the simple sentence structure and big text: small page number: small book ratio), but I still believe that kid friendly media can be really good. Even my bias as a Sonic fan wasn't enough to raise this book from a meh three stars to an I-liked-it four stars. I prefer the movie, which I still think is an average movie. Let's hope like the sequel movie, the sequel book is better than its predecessor.
Really great, sonic-fast read and I agree with other reviewers, there were a few places where I liked the sequence of events in this novelization better than the movie.
This is an easy read for anyone above a preteen and follows the movie pretty well. If you or your child is a fan of the Sonic series, I would recommend reading this.
