Will Emma rise to the challenge of dating three men who are playing to win?
After Shane, Cole, and Nicholas accept Emma's daring proposition on New Year's Eve, she begins to question her judgment. How can she handle a relationship with the three sexiest men she's ever met, especially when she should be focused on her final semester of college?
As Emma's feelings for them deepen, she struggles with how open to be about her relationships and whether she can trust the guys after their shaky beginning. When Shane, Cole, and Nicholas prove they’re ready to go all in, will Emma be brave enough to accept what they're offering?
*The Risking It series is a reverse harem trilogy and includes adult content.*
Autumn is a lifelong bookworm with a penchant for sarcasm. She loves cloudy days, fluffy dogs, and murdering succulents. When she isn't bringing daydreams to life on the page, she can be found behind the lens of a digital camera or binge-watching Veronica Mars.
In exchange for an Honest Review, I received a Advanced Reader Copy.
This book was refreshing because it exposes the ups and down of trying to make a poly relationship work. Throughout the story you see Emma struggle with the complexity of the relationship and also trying to determine where she fits between Shane, Nic and Cole. Playing it to win explores the insecurities, the baggage and the life experiences that all four bring in the relationship. The realistic behaviors or scenarios made the book frustrating. At times, I wanted to smack Emma for her reactions towards the guys, but the story needed her to experience this difficulty in order to strengthen her relationships with the guys. Just like real life.
I applaud Autumn for writing such real relatable characters for RH drama. Keep writing, and I will keep reading what you write.
Playing to Win is the second Book in autumn reads risking it series. Emma and her three very competitive men are the center of this addicting series. We start off the book with Emma just stating that she is ready for a relationship with all three. Can Cole, Nicholas and Shane rise up and show her how they would love and treat her? Or will the pressures of having a relationship with more than one man be too much?
This series is such a fun read. I enjoy Emma a female lead. She is smart, funny, sweet, witty and dare i say adventurous? After all don’t you have to be to take on more than one guy? And the guys are each smart, successful, and oh so damn hot. They each bring out the best in Emma as she does to each of them. I really enjoy this series and I cannot wait for more.
This series is a little too sweet for my tastes - I like more grit and more dirty heat - but as usual I enjoy this author's writing style and good editing. The short length and low drama was a nice offset to the other long books I have going on at the moment, and I am interested in the reverse harem in a contemporary setting and how the characters have to explain/navigate that with not-so-open loved ones. 3-3.5 ⭐️
Playing to Win is the second book in Autumn Reed's Risking It Series, the fabulous book featuring Emma and her three overly competitive men-children, otherwise known as the Ts. This book picks up right before midnight. Shane, Cole, and Nic have accepted her daring proposition placing them all in a relationship. Now the question is, "Who gets the first kiss at midnight?" This may be the only simple question posed in the book. This is a book of growing pains. It's difficult enough finding your way at the beginning of a new relationship, but when you are finding your way with three different men at one time, it's overwhelming. The guys are all in, but Emma has doubts.
This book is one of the most realistic Reverse Harem stories that I have read. So many stories gloss over the difficulties a unique relationship like this would have. What normal female wouldn't question if she is good enough to hold the attention of three attractive, smart, successful, wealthy men? What female wouldn't be afraid that they would get bored, want more, and end up breaking her heart? What female wouldn't wonder why me? Am I special enough? Emma is every-woman in this regard. She's pretty, smart, fun, confident, but she doubts herself once the guys agree to all be with her. She's afraid. The guys all pick up on her hesitancy and this creates their own fears. Several missteps occur along the way. Emma and the guys don't always communicate or share their feelings/fears like they should. Holding back doesn't make a difference though. When you are falling in love, you can pretend all you want, you can try to be careful; you are still vulnerable to heartbreak. You can't win if you don't play. This relationship, these men are too good to lose and Emma is a smart girl. It's time to go all in.
I loved every second of this book. There was a great blend of sweet, sexy, funny, and frustrating times. Despite the setbacks, each relationship did move forward into more serious areas. So natural. I love Emma and her bestie, Simone, the guys, and Xavier. I love when the guys call Emma, Cinderella and I love Snow White. I loved the romance and the sexy times. I love red stilettos and black peep-toe boots. I love the cover. This book manages to show how much work is required to be a success while being incredibly fun. I look forward to the next one; wonder what the shoes will be?
Oh what an enjoyable read this was! I read the first book in this series in an anthology which was released right at the very end of last year (2016) I wasn't sure at that point in time if contemporary reverse harem was for me (although I was/am a big fan of paranormal RH). The first book on this series, Raising the Stakes changed my mind on that and boy did I fall in love with it. I fell in love with the characters and the setting and the story, it was purely magical.
It's been a while since book one was released, 11 months to be exact (not that I'm counting or anything!) So how excited was I when I heard Playing to Win was releasing? Jumping up and down squeeling excited was what I was. As soon as this pretty book fell into my hands, and yes it's pretty, just look at those shoes on the cover #SeriousShoeEnvy. I dived right in, sleep, food and everything else could wait!
Was this book as good as book one? Oh hell yeah it was, it was even better. In this book we get the growth of the relationship between Emma and the boys. We get the real self doubt that we all experience in any relationship, except this one is times three, however it's written so well that Emma doesn't come across irritating or annoying, in fact she comes across as a strong character who is learning to accept all the difficulties of this relationship she has chosen and embrace them to be true to who she is.
We also get to learn a bit more of the back story of all the boys in this book and it just made me fall in love with them even more. There were points in this book which really had me laughing, without giving too much away I'm just going to say the pageant was one of the best scenes, there were parts that had me swooning in "holy hotness I need these guys in my life" and there were parts where I was biting my nails in worry over what was going to happen next! Overall, this book was A.Ma.Zing, I loved it and when I finished it I picked it right back up to read all over again.
I'm so excited for the next book to come out and I'm so glad that I gave book one in this series a try as I really would've regretted never reading these books if hadn't. Playing to Win is a five star read from me and if I could give it 500 stars then I would. Put simply, I loved it.
4-4.5 stars in this sequel to Raising the Stakes by Autumn Reed
I loved book 1 in this series (I read the updated version recently released) and I thought Autumn did a good job keeping the story going in book 2. I like the angst, tension, and finally see the walls starting to come down with Emma and her men. I will say this is one of the only RH stories that really cracks down on the difficulty of this non-societal norm relationship. I appreciated that it was true to the story, it was relatable, and it covered insecurities I would feel if I was in her shoes with these 3 sexy men. I loved seeing more of the guys backgrounds, seeing them fight for her, seeing them progress in their relationship (loved those steamy and sweet scenes!). And the nerd in my liked the project she is working on (and my love for HGTV) and Snow and Ace were a great addition 😊
I will say I loved seeing Emma stick up for herself and Nic at the event with him (without giving anything away). I also knew the thing she was doing behind one of the guys backs was going to blow up in her face. I will say one of the gripes I had was that when things went poorly, the way Emma was treated I didnt think was acceptable and she forgave the guy pretty quickly. I know what she did was wrong but I didnt think she did anything too bad and she was going to tell him. But I loved this story, I'm already a good chunk into book 3 already!
Oooooh and the guys did a good job making it hard to pick one as a favorite. I really think the guys are one of the most well-rounded harems I have read in awhile. They each have their flaws though which we see in this one (and in book 3, but thats for in the next review haha). I like how they are making a family unit. I also felt so badly for Emma and the reception she got from others. I mean, before reading this genre I don't think I would have understood this type of relationship working, but I have fallen for this why choose love for the last 4 years and I hope to see more of these love stories in real life ❤️
This is book two in the Risking it series, and while it doesn't start right where the last one left off it is close enough and quickly catches you up. I would not recommend reading this book without the first one, though you could manage it.
What I love and what sets the book apart from other reverse harem novels I have read, is this really dives into what it mean emotionally and socially to be involved in a reverse harem for a women in a real world setting. Emma is insecure and wondering how could they possibly be happy with sharing my time vs just having me to myself. It addresses her fears over what her friends and family may think and what their family may think. What an emotional toll it takes if you try to hide it. The time commitment it takes to date three men and how other relationships could suffer. It was wonderful to see them addressed and for Emma to make her decisions and deal with her fears and decide what really matters to her.
The book doesn't just focus on the difficulties of the relationship. The guys continue to be their lovely selves and the romances are hot and continue to progress further into the steamy. You also get a much better picture of the three guys, especially Nic and Cole. These males aren't perfect, they have their issues too and Emma is there for them. We also get to see Emma struggle with what she wants to do with her life and starting to discover what work she feels passionate about. There is also humor in one or two scenes as a result of bets had me in stitches. The end of the book sets up a mini cliffhanger that sets up book 3 but nothing too bad as far as cliffhangers.
Playing to win is the 2nd book in Risking It trilogy and if I’m completely honest, even though this is a relatively short novel it did take me longer to finish it because I didn’t find it as entertaining and allowed myself to get distracted. Now that’s not to say the story or the writing was bad on the contrary it’s easy to follow I just felt there was a lot of humming and hurrying throughout and I got bored with it.
Emma goes back and forth about her relationship with Cole, Nic and Shane. Quiet often she avoids them to “think” rather than ask questions, opening up or being completely honest with them or herself. She has a lot of reservations which are understandable but she had made the decision to give it a real go and in the first instance she’s not sure. Her actions are sometimes a contradiction to her personality and vice versa. For example she is courageous in the face of Nic’s father but not her own mother. I know she made a comment about it being different when you’re under the thumb all the time as opposed to when just meeting but I beg to differ, Emma obviously has a protective nature and a sense of right and wrong, we saw that when she confronted the guys about the bet, out of all of them she should be able to put her foot down when it comes to her mother.
I don’t know how much reassurance that the guys need to give Emma that they don’t mind their unconventional relationship. I felt it was overdone, and Emma was just being obtuse.
I think Emma has a great group of boyfriends and such supportive friends, I found bits and pieces of the book quiet entertaining especially their contest but their was so much potential to make this a great read.
I absolutely loved this second book in the Risking It series!! Emma is one lucky girl, but Cole, Shane, and Nicholas are blessed to have her all for themselves. Emma is so so kind, smart, adventurous, witty, and a babe. While her three guys are intelligent, successful, funny, sweet, talented, and oh so sexy!!! I loved how Jessica from the Stardust series is also in this book because we get to know her more. I also loved Simone’s spunky attitude, too. Emma was definitely timid in the start of this book, especially with how to progress their relationships, while still maintaining her true self. She learned quickly that she would rather be with her guys than care about what anyone thinks of their relationship. I loved all the different sides we got to see of the guys, and each special thing they brought out of Emma. They make her a better person and much more confident, all together. And she does the exact same for them, and teaches them how to love. I cannot wait for the final book in the Risking It series: Defying the Odds!!!
This is the second book in this series. Autumn’s Reeds writing for doesn’t feel like i am reading a book of fiction but instead makes me feel as the story is mine. She is able to make you feel as your are Emma.
The story brings us what i feel are the realistic highs and lows of of having a non traditional relationship of being in Reverse Harem. The ways of how both Emma and the men tackle the issues of being in this relationship are both great and frustrating. This writing is why i could not put it down. I loved reading book.
At times i was wooo hoooing in the story and at other times i just wanted to strangle the men and other yell at Emma by saying “What are you thinking?”.
The emotional gauntlet of this book was fantastic and it kept me reading into the wee hours of the night. I could not put it down.
In this book, we get to know more about the guys’ backgrounds – we meet Nicholas’ manipulative mother and overbearing father (who Emma tells off in spectacular fashion) and Cole’s creepy (also manipulative) brother. Don’t get me started on her (again, manipulative) mother! Sometimes perfection is just a facade, and there’s a real person with hang-ups and issues underneath. All relationships have bumps in the road, and when you’re involved with three guys at the same time, you can expect to have a few communications issues. These guys manage to work through them and grow in their relationship. And the unexpected bonus? Who can resist a cute puppy.
I received an ARC for this book to review. (I purchase copies of all of Autumn's works)
The first book in this series was one of my favorites from that anthology. I fell in love with this little group and have been dying for more. I was so excited when I saw this up for preorder. Autumn did not disappoint!! I love them all even more after this one. We pick up right after Em makes her proposal for them to all date. We go through getting to know everyone better and of course we have some real life issues coming in to play. Like how she plans on telling her parents she's dating three guys! The ending definitely has me intrigued with what's going on in Pasadena and I can't wait for the next one!!!
Oh yes! This series is heating up now. It has been a while since I read a contemporary RH and love it. Autumn Reed is one of my favorite authors and every novel just gets better and better. If you are like me and hate to buy books since you have KU like me, then know that this series is so worth it. Well, anything by Reed is worth it. I would pay even more if she could write faster...hint hint hint. If you have never read RH, then you are missing out. I am firmly behind #whychoose in novels. In reality, it would be way too much ego to handle but I love the fantasy. Great book and series. Another win!
I received an ARC and voluntarily decided to review this work. Playing to Win is the second book in the Risking It series. It is contemporary reverse harem. I absolutely loved this story. It is a fun read following the main character in her very new relationship with three men. It has just the right amount of wit, steamy scenes, and drama. I'm rather in love with the supporting characters as well and all their awesomeness. In light of that, in reference to my most favorite conversation in this work, No fairies died while writing this review.
Book two in this awesome series and I think it is even better than book one (and I absolutely adored book one)!
Watching Emma Navigate through her relationship with Cole Nic and Shane with great chemistry, humour, Romance and drama. The story flows beautifully and Autumn really draws you into the story.
Beautifully written we get to seen more of all the characters personalities and I fell in love with all the characters all over again
I am excited for book three when it comes out next year, I highly recommend this book and the series it is a fabulous read
Ever since reading the first book in the "Risking it" series I have been captivated by the characters and story development. After finishing this book I'm even more in love with the guys and the story. I also really like that it takes place in my home town. One thing that would be even cooler than just mentioning the college would be more descriptions about the places they go to in Vegas. I may be a little biased as a Vegas native though. I can't wait for the next book!! Definitely recommend this book!
I loved this book. It's a contemporary reverse harem and the second one in the series. Now that Emma is over the bet the boys made, she's going to have to figure out how to juggle three very sexy men. Emma is trying to figure out how to be in this unconventional relationship that she craves so much. I can't wait for book three!
Playing to win is the second book in the Risking it series. I really enjoyed this book. To me it felt like a really light hearted romance. The story was really great Emma takes her time getting comfortable in her relationship with the guys before taking things further, but still has steam. The book feels very natural with just the right amount of drama but not a whole lot. I’m really looking forward to seeing where this story goes. Can’t wait for book three. If you are looking for a contemporary reverse harem story that is realistic check out this book series.
Playing to win was great and when I found out there was going to be a second, I could not wait to read it and it did not disappoint. It had everything. I LOVED the way it showed the problems a so called traditional relationship would have. It calls to you and leaves you wantiing more. Can't wait for more.
I was very happy that the relationship with this group moved beyond the sexual teasing that a lot of the Rh's have been lately. Finally more of an adult tone. I was a little disappointed that 1 of the guys didn't get his moment. Kind of feel bad for him. Overall, I enjoyed this. It's a really quick read and I'm hoping the final book comes out soon.
I read the first book as a part of the Falling for them anthology, which was awhile ago, so my memory of the events was a little hazy. Nevertheless, it did not stop me from fully enjoying the book. I had a great time reading Playing to Win (I definitely liked everything that I read) and I'm looking forward to the final book in the series.
Emma is really struggling with her relationship with the guys. It's refreshing to see a contemporary RH with the MC struggling with this type of relationship that is out of 'the norm'. But it was amazing to watch her take charge and prove she really wants this relationship to work.
This series is great in my opinion..The characters and how there relationships evolve is something to read and keeps you on the edge of your seat and wanting to put it down! I was sad that the book ended as fast as it did, and cant wait for the next book to come out!
Ok so another great read! Literally I love everything that Autumn writes! This one felt like a stepping stone book in the journey, with Emma and her men and they had some great moments and some bumps in the road as well. It looks like things are looking up for Emma and graduation is fast approaching can't wait to see what's next!
Absolutely loved this book, which is the second in the Risking it series. Autumn definitely brought the heat and steam. Great story and the end left me wondering what will happen next with out any crazy cliffhangers. I personally can not wait for book three
Love love love that she takes her time to be comfortable with their relationship before taking it any further. I also enjoyed how they bought her Snow and that lovely necklace and gave her own space in their home. Really proves they want her around.
Love the continuation of the story from the first book, while almost feeling like it’s own story at the same time. The transition from sexy “meet-cutes” to developing real ties and feelings was so smooth it felt real. Can not wait for the next book <3
I really enjoyed this sequel. This lets us see what happens after they decide to start a relationship with all four together. Emma's struggles seem real and her insecurities too. I'm glad we got to learn more about all of the men and i hope that there wil be a third book.
